Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett County Police retiring K-9 for health reasons K-9 Egan, a Belgian Malinois with the Gwinnett County Police Department, is retiring early due to health issues, including heat intolerance and declining mobility from job-related injuries. Since joining the SWAT Team in March 2022, Egan has been deployed on 132 calls, assisted in 30 arrests, and completed 1,540 training hours. Gwinnett County commissioners approved his retirement, prioritizing his well-being. Egan will now enjoy a relaxed life at home with his handler, Cpl. William Webb. While police K-9s typically serve until age 7 or 8, Egan’s career is ending earlier due to his health challenges. STORY 2: Gwinnett County Public Schools' newest teachers approaching job with enthusiasm Alejandra Ruiz, inspired by her first-grade teacher, is now set to teach first grade at Minor Elementary in Gwinnett County, where she hopes to make a difference for her students. She joined 1,200 new educators at GCPS’s New Teacher Orientation, which featured advice from leaders like Interim Superintendent Al Taylor, who emphasized urgency in addressing student needs, and a panel of award-winning educators. Fellow new teacher Michelle Juarez, a GCPS graduate, shared her excitement to give back to the district. The event provided valuable insights, including the importance of self-care and building trust with students. GCPS is nearly fully staffed, with just 35 positions left to fill before the school year starts on Aug. 4. STORY 3: Gwinnett staff providing transportation to seniors in need after state vendor stops service Gwinnett County staff are stepping in to assist elderly residents after the state’s primary transportation vendor, Deanna Services, ceased operations. About 320 seniors relied on the service for medical appointments and trips to senior centers. County staff are now prioritizing urgent medical trips, such as dialysis, and personally transporting seniors when necessary. While some state subcontractors continue to provide rides to certain senior centers, the county is filling gaps for other locations and helping residents find alternative transportation. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 4 STORY 4: Gwinnett, United Way teaming up to help inmates prepare for life outside jail The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the United Way of Greater Atlanta to support newly released jail inmates through the Gwinnett Re-Entry Intervention Program (G.R.I.P.). The county will provide $250,000 to fund resources like substance abuse treatment, job skills training, housing assistance, and crime prevention education. The program also includes inmate work detail units, offering skills training through partnerships with local businesses. The goal is to reduce recidivism by addressing addiction, mental health, and employment needs, ensuring a smoother transition back into the community. STORY 5: Lawrenceville resident joins Youth Villages’ internship program Ariya Maskara, a Lawrenceville resident and Emory University psychology student, is interning with Youth Villages, a nonprofit supporting young adults with behavioral challenges. Maskara is working in Nashville group homes, gaining hands-on experience with youth aged 6 to 17. This summer, Youth Villages welcomed its largest intern class, with 92 students from 48 colleges across 15 states, selected from over 950 applicants. Interns assist with goal-setting, recreational activities, and mentorship, while building skills in behavioral health. Youth Villages hopes many interns will return for full-time roles after graduation. Born and raised in southeastern Wisconsin, Chad Stillman was introduced to sports and the outdoors at a young age.  Growing up, if you couldn't find him on the soccer or football field, chances are he was in the woods or on the water. Those two passions would lead to a stint as a semi-pro kicker for the Racine Raiders and a cameraman for Bowhunting.com. By 22 years old, he was fresh out a college, a homeowner and embarking on his lifelong dream of working in law enforcement. Quickly moving up in the ranks, he received a promotion to the SWAT Team and ultimately settled in as an FBI Task Force Investigator. To warn our audience, this isn't an easy conversation to listen to as Chad takes us on the emotional journey of his story. The shootings of Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky as they stepped out of an American Jewish Committee event in Washington D.C. was “the realization of our worst fears,” the organization’s CEO, Ted Deutch, said on the Haaretz Podcast. In his conversation with host Allison Kaplan Sommer, Deutch said he hoped the tragedy would mark a “turning point” and send a message to world leaders that “this is what happens when you don't speak out, when there isn't moral clarity, when you allow language like ‘globalize the intifada’ and ‘from the river to the sea’. People espousing these things while wearing Palestinian Islamic Jihad headbands and marching the streets in support of Hamas - this is where it can lead.” In the U.S., Deutch said, he called on politicians and other leaders to “stand up and say Jews should not feel afraid to gather together in a synagogue, community center or anywhere just because of who they are. It's crazy that we've accepted checkpoints and armed guards and metal detectors and tactical SWAT teams standing outside of synagogues on Shabbat as normal. And that's what we need to hear from our leaders. Have we heard enough of that? No.” Asked about Israeli ministers who pointed fingers of blame for the killing at European leaders supporting sanctions against Israel for atrocities in Gaza, Deutch said “We need the world to stand with us, and I'm not pushing anyone away right now. I want them to try to learn from this, to be our allies and take a firmer stand than they might have previously.” “The person that I blame for what happened is the shooter,” he added, “but the environment in which it happened? *(Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only)* Steuben County, New York — On October 21, 2024, at about 12:40 a.m., deputies with the Steuben County Sheriff's Department responded to a 911 call to check on the welfare of a person at a residence on Angel Road in Cameron. When officers arrived, they encountered 50-year-old Allen Hoad, who allegedly fired a shotgun at the officers, and then went into the residence. For several hours, officers negotiated with Hoad in an effort to get him to surrender. Hoad then left the residence with what appeared to be a long gun and drove his vehicle through a field to a second location. Hoad then allegedly drove his vehicle toward the officers, colliding with one of the police cars. Officers discharged their service weapons in response, striking Hoad as he exited his vehicle. Hoad was transferred to a local hospital where he was later pronounced. Send us a textSteve “Zane” Stoops spent the last 19 years as the Senior Combat Assault Dog Trainer (CAD) for the United States Joint Special Operations Command-JSOC, assigned to the 1st SFOD-D, located at Ft. Liberty, NC (retired January 2024.) He and a very small and exclusive group of Special Operators are innovators and developed many K9 training philosophies utilized today by the most elite SOF tactical working dog programs throughout the world. Steve actively handled these dogs in numerous combat situations facing fire fights, suicide bombers, and IEDs. A veteran of 14 combat deployments, Steve was also requested by and assisted Naval Special Warfare units in Iraq. During this time, Steve also played a crucial role in the development of the following CAD programs worldwide: Conducted the initial training course for Army Ranger CAD program. Selected and trained the CADs and Handlers for the elite British Special Forces, traveling to England to instruct at the inaugural K9 course for both British Army and Naval Special Operators and their dogs. Selected and trained the dogs for the Danish Jaeger Corps, traveling to Scandinavia to conduct training events. Stood up a K9 program in a combat zone by importing dogs into the zone for the Kurdish Counter Terror Group (CTG). Assisted the German KSK with their CAD program and was co-located with them on a combat deployments. Assisted the Norwegian SOF Dog program in Afghanistan. Stood up the CAD program for the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, selecting and training the K9/Handler teams on a multi-week training course.  Prior to working for Special Operations, Steve stood up and supervised a protection dog program in Afghanistan for Afghan President Hammed Karzai (2002.) Our guest, Chief Ronald Applin, Chief of Police, Atlanta Public Schools, has over 32 years of law enforcement experience. After completing boot camp for the United States Marine Corps, he served in the Marine Corps Reserves for 6 years. He simultaneously began his career with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office in 1989 and retired in 2010 at the rank Captain. During his tenure at the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, he commanded the day-to-day operations of the Law Enforcement Division, SWAT Team, oversaw the implementation of 911 services for the City of Chattahoochee Hills and served as the Venue Commander for the 2008 Brian Nichols Trial. In 2011, he became a faculty member with Reinhardt University Public Safety Institute, where he continues to serve, teaching undergraduate and graduate level criminal justice courses. He also taught in the Law and Justice Program at Creekside High School. His love for public safety led him to accept an offer to serve as the Director of Security at Landmark Christian School in 2013. The experiences gained in this position prepared him for the highlight of his law enforcement career—being selected as the Chief of Police for the newly created Atlanta Public Schools Police Department. As a product of the Atlanta Public School System, Charles Lincoln Harper High School 1986 graduating class, this was a full circle moment for him. Chief Applin earned a Bachelor of Science Social Science in Criminal Justice from Mercer University, Master of Public Administration from Troy University, and has completed all coursework, with the exception of a dissertation, for his PhD in Criminal Justice from Capella University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy 220th Session and a graduate of the inaugural class of Mercer University's Public Safety Leadership Institute. Chief Applin's leadership and professionalism extend beyond the halls of the schools he serves. Years of Service: 1991-PresentIn 1991, Sam began his career as a sheriff deputy with the Madison County Sheriff's Office. After gaining a little experience, Sam transferred to the Clark County Sheriff's Office where he learned what law enforcement was about. Being a small department, Sam was thrown into every experience including dealing with livestock, working as an EMT, part firefighter, and dealing with a small jail.In 1999, Sam began working for the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office. While there, Sam worked patrol, narcotics, was a sniper on the SWAT Team and then began his ascent through the department's ranks.He rose steadily through the ranks until he was the Chief Deputy where he thought he would remain. Swat Team on Trump: Communication disaster led to the shooting of 4. #Trump #Sniper #Assassinationattempt NEW YORK — Something seemed off from the moment Beaver County SWAT sniper Gregory Nicol spotted a man skulking around the outskirts of the site where former President Donald Trump was about to take the stage on July 13. From his second-floor post inside the AGR complex at the fairgrounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, Nicol noticed the young man in a gray T-shirt, lurking. "He was looking up and down the building ... It just seemed out of place," Nicol, assistant leader of the Beaver County SWAT team, told ABC News in an interview that airs Monday on Good Morning America, "It just didn't seem right." Nicol noticed an unattended bike and backpack. And he saw the man looking up and around, then pulling a rangefinder from his pocket. There was no apparent reason to have a distance-gauging device at a political rally featuring the man who, in a few days, would accept his party's presidential nomination. The sharpshooter snapped pictures of the suspicious-looking man and the bike, then flagged it to fellow snipers from his team assigned to the event and called it into the command group. Nicol would be the first officer to issue a warning about 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Within an hour, Crooks would open fire from the roof of that very building, less than 200 yards from the rally's stage, wounding Trump on live TV, killing one person in the crowd, and critically injuring two more.
