Bex Simon is a British Artsmith who has overcome difficult mental health issues to become highly sought after for her creative work in metal. Bex is unconstrained in her approach to design by combining geometric shapes and textures. Her sculptures and public art tell stories relative to the surrounding environment and can be found around the UK. Bex was born in Chertsey, Surrey in 1973, the third of four children—she has an older sister and brother and a younger brother. She reflects on a very strict upbringing from parents Tim, a computer programmer and Gel a retired teacher who later volunteered at a school for handicapped children; a relationship which has mellowed with time and understanding of Bex's mental health. Bex was attracted to the art of blacksmithing as a teenager and despite struggling at school with dyslexia, she studied at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design – Foundation graduating in 1992.  In 1995 she graduated with a BA in Three-Dimensional Design in Metal Surrey from the Institute of Art and Design; followed in 1998 by a Diploma and National Certificate from Hereford College of Technology and in 2017 a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Forge Work DFS from Herefordshire and Ludlow College. In 2019 she began studying Geometry at the Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts. In 1999 Bex moved to London and established her creative blacksmithing business with the help of the Prince's Trust. Initially, she worked on private commissions acquired from exhibiting regularly at RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows. Later, she moved on to larger scale public artwork projects via collaborations with a selected group of artist blacksmiths. Her biggest commission to date being a forty meter public artwork for Westminster Magistrates' Courts in London. It was for that installation that she became the first woman to receive the Tonypandy Cup; the most prestigious award given by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths.  Bex lives in North Devon with her husband Dave and their daughters Molly and Lyonie. The book that Bex recommended on the YouTube video - https://www.youtube.com/@theaartpodcast -The Creative Art, A Way of Being by Rick Rubin Bex's links:https://bexsimon.com/https://www.instagram.com/bexsimonartsmith/ Bex's favorite female artists:Zaha HadidEmma KunzLousie Bourgeois Bex's playlist:Beastie Boys / SabotageSinead O'Connor / TroyDoja Cat / Paint the Town RedRadiohead / Street SpiritSleaford Mods / Nudge ItThe Sundays / Can't Be SureChase & Status / BackboneGoldfrapp / Ooh La LaSystem of A Down / Chop SueyRoyksopp Robyn / MonumentNia Archives / Off Wiv Ya HeadzHost: Chris StaffordProduced by Hollowell StudiosFollow @theaartpodcast on InstagramThe AART Podcast on YouTube -  https://www.youtube.com/@theaartpodcastEmail: theaartpodcast@gmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/wisp--4769409/support.

Note: We highly encourage you to listen to Parts I & II before listening to this episode, as we continue to honor our truth and authenticity, which may feel more intense than the previous episodes on this subject. We would like for you to be able to determine if this episode will be something you want to listen to or pass on, so here are some details of what we share in this season 3 finale. The first thing we talk about is being "turned on" and how that isn't always a good feeling and can be triggering. And then we talk about the Big O, but just so you know, we use the actual word and all the actual words in this episode, and also colorful language here and there. We also talk about selves that were created to quote “like” sex, and we discuss flashbacks, body memories and switching. We talk about how we manage our sexual selves, including perceptions of feeling like a perpetrator. We go over the topic of consent, and we also talk about the feelings of guilt that come up for either wanting sex or not wanting sex when in a romantic relationship. Please remember that you may pause and come back if you feel yourself or selves feeling triggered or dissociated. Drew and Garden System talk about how in the beginning a system feels separated from each other, even feeling like enemies. There often is difficulty in listening to selves, because it is hard to learn and believe what parts hold and about trauma that occurred. They talk about how they developed relationships within their systems, navigating selves with different values, beliefs and behaviors. Drew and Garden System share personal stories about improving relationships by building trust, figuring out what is important to different selves, compromising and coming together as systems. Also covered is the often necessary topic of adult selves looking after and reparenting younger or little selves. The episode concludes that offering gratitude to your selves for all the strengths they bring to your system as a whole helps all of yous feel appreciated and loved. We are in conversation with Troy Ruffels, a photomedia artist drawing on the tradition of painting and drawing, to make works that are both immersive and atmospheric. Troy incorporates the elements of fire and water into his daily routine from pre-dawn ocean swims to evening fire pits, creating a discipline for his art practice. As a country boy growing up in Forth on Tasmania's north-west coast, Troy's career was launched at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Primavera exhibition for emerging artists in 1997. Since then he has continued his exploration of boundaries: through the mediums he uses or the poetic language to evoke the atmosphere of weather. Troy lectures at the University of Tasmania's School of Creative Art, Inveresk and is represented by Bett Gallery in Hobart. You can see Troy's work on our Instagram page @artdestinations.podcast. Troy would like to take a moment to correct an error he made during a recent conversation for Art Destinations. While discussing key individuals involved in the Digital Art Research Facility, he mistakenly referred to Mary Knights. The correct name is Mary Scott who was key participant in this research project. Troy is sorry for the oversight. Mary Scott was an invaluable part of this project, and he would like to ensure their contribution is fully recognised. He sincerely apologises for any confusion caused and appreciate your understanding.

Drew & Garden System talk about listening (ironic we know!) instead of just trying to talk to parts. Remember that it's not just “talking” you're listening for, because not all parts communicate with words or by talking. Sometimes communication is thoughts we notice or pictures we see internally. Being quiet can feel uncomfortable because one often becomes aware of memories and feelings that parts were keeping tucked away. Validating and accepting parts' feelings and letting your selves express emotions is discussed. Also discussed is parts that still may be stuck in trauma time. We give several personal examples of how to get these parts up to speed on daily life and the present. We also touch on navigating parts in a system having different partner preferences, different and opposing sexual orientations, and different gender identities.  Having a system of parts becomes one giant balancing act when you start listening and incorporating everyone's needs, wants and wishes.Visit acoupleofmultiples.com to sign up for our mailing list and to find out all about our private, paid community called Hearts Multiplied for people with dissociative disorders, their supporters, and therapists treating DID!We are honored to have a gold plus sponsor for season 2! Nature-based art therapist and founder and executive director of Evergreen Minds run community programs for communities, senior living, and healthcare professionals. About Michelle Dr. Michelle Olson is a lover of the outdoors and mindful and body-full practices.  She is a social gerontologist, a licensed, board-certified creative arts therapist, a certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional, Certified Activity Consultant with a specialization in Memory Care and she is also a Certified Forest Therapy Guide.  Michelle teaches about mental health and social issues in aging including ageism at Montana State University. During the pandemic, Dr. Olson founded a 501(c)(3) charitable organization called Evergreen Minds, Inc. which aims to reframe stigmas associated with dementia by connecting people in and outside of senior living who are living with dementia with Vassar College students and members of all ages in the Hudson Valley and New York City. This is done through a wide variety of meaningful dementia-inclusive experiences in and with nature and expressive arts. Key Takeaways Creative arts therapies like visual arts, music, drama, and dance are valuable approaches for helping people living with dementia amidst changes in verbal communication. People with dementia rarely have opportunities to express their emotions and receive validation. Spending time in nature has physical, mental, and cognitive health benefits. Natural elements bring people together and provide opportunities for deeper connections with the earth, healing, and expression. The most common barriers that keep older adults from getting outside, particularly in senior living, are staffing challenges, safety concerns and temperature. Many senior living communities are not structured for residents to get outside. There is a fear of taking risks and team members are not even supported. Time in nature makes us less depressed and anxious and more empathic, creative and grateful. Nature gives us what we need in that moment. Ageism and ableism are at the systemic root of issues in senior living and home care Segregating people from the rest of society eliminates daily opportunities for intergenerational connections.

Creativity through the lens of a serial entrepreneur and master salesmanCreativity means "to solve problems that aren't the same way that everyone else does it."I went to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and double majored in accounting and finance. The majors were chosen because they give intrinsic skills that are needed by all businesses – everyone needs to know where there money is and how to get more of it. Finance covered a part of how a company gets more money; however the best way is through sales. Knowing that sales are the key to every business I worked a variety commission only sales position throughout my time at Duquesne.  Following graduation I worked for three years as a personal financial advisor. In the first year, I was the office's “rookie of the year”, in the second year I was the “underclassman of the year”, and the third year I left to create my first real estate business in 2011. Since then, my businesses have created revenue from properties in a vast array of methods. Some of the more common ways we create revenue in the real estate sector by preforming land lording services, selling investment grade properties to other investors, and renovation for sale of properties.  I also run two podcasts – Father and Joe, and Local Football Flavor, I provide an ever growing amount of keynote addresses and presentations, as well as providing business and personal coaching services. Outside of my professional world I am a married man with a newly born son. In 2017, along with Father Boniface Hicks, we created the podcast Father and Joe. I was not the kind of kid that anyone was gonna start off. But I wasn't a bully either. I was a nice kid but I think that people that are bullied and people that bully are coming from the same route. It's a lack of confidence. It's a lack of feeling good about themselves. So a bully is somebody who really doesn't feel good about themselves. Because people who really feel good about themselves, don't try to hit on other people and make other people miserable.  They're obviously not feeling good about themselves and a person that's allowing themselves to feel bullied also doesn't feel good about themselves. LARRY LOGAN worked with HEFNER & PLAYBOY for close to 30 years. Logan began his career as HEFS personal Contributing Photographer from 1977-1984 and then was named "Vice President, Creative Director" in PLAYBOYS ENTERTAINMENT GROUP from 1984-1994."I transitioned to the VP Creative Director position in the early days of the new Entertainment Group. I had extensive background in marketing and design, separate from my professional photography career, which gave me the expertise to take on this role. How were you able to secure your photographer position at Playboy in 1977?"Kerry Morris was the Playboy Studio West manager and knew of my professional (outside) work during my student years at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara and earlier at the University of Arkansas. During both degrees I did off-campus professional assignments for major magazines resulting in over 500 magazine credits.""Kerry invited me to join initially to assist and learn from the other photographers then to work with HEF as a photojournalist for the magazine. Although I did some nude shoots, more of my focus was on serving as HEF'S personal photographer and photographer of the Playboy Interviews, all the Mansion events, traveling with HEF.""I transitioned to the VP Creative Director position in the early days of the new Entertainment Group. I had extensive background in marketing and design, separate from my professional photography career, which gave me the expertise to take on this role."What was the biggest take away you took from working so closely with HEF?"How to stretch and push myself in any project with him. As he said to the designer of PlayboyMansion West, do your very best and that is the minimum I will accept. How to not acceptanything less than the maximum effort from my staff and contributors I hired.""I would have my 1pm calls with HEF.  When answering the phone it was always like stepping up to bat at the World Series.  I had to be on my best game, each and every time. Although he was demanding, he always gave an allowance when he could see I was pushing hard to make his directive come through.  Loyalty was of paramount importance.""The level that he forced me to achieve has stayed with me throughout my career. It also made it difficult with leading other creative teams after Playboy, as it took a certain sacrifice and drive that my team at Playboy certainly had, but was beyond what others could achieve."This was another fascinating interview Corinna & I were able to land. We learned so much more about HEF - and the common theme that we continue to hear from our guests was: "HEF was absolute genius & visionary - and with that said - everyone of us who had the honor and privilege of working with HEF left a profound impact on each us.  Without a doubt each of us have harnessed what we learned from the exquisite gift of working with HEF & PlaShooting Straight Radio PodcastWelcome to 2nd Amendment University!!
