Swiss producer and DJ NVST (@ghettonast) likes to shock her crowd. She thrives on clashing sounds, scenes, genres and textures into uncomfortable new worlds, all of which is a result of coming up from the illegal party scene in her homeland. She works hard to develop and preserve that native scene in many different ways: she is part of the Female:Pressure family, co-runs the French label Big Science and holds down residencies on LYLRadio and Rinse FM. This week's mix was recorded in Le Bourg, a club in Lausanne that NVST tells us has recently been taken over and is working hard to bring something fresh to the scene. The mix is filled with unreleased tracks from NVST's favourite artists and forthcoming tunes from labels like Big Science, Kindergatern and moshtrq next to some of her all-time favourites. It opens with a collage that includes Tamika D. Mallory's 'State of Emergency' speech of which she says "I remember the first time I heard it so accurately; I knew I should include it symbolically as well because it resonates so much with me."

Get your sub ON. We're about to go wobbly deep. The lowest frequencies, that heavy rolling kick that makes your hips move. The lower freq spectrum that your body automatically responds to, by moving and grooving, can't stand still. A train that keeps going, taking us across the continents to see new horizons. My first guest is visiting the pod. She has a hefty long DJ career, travellig around the world making the dancefloors bounce in the dark. She also founded Female:Pressure, an online platform that suddenly spiked in new members after Björk mentioned it in an interview. I'm obviously talking about the gentle and generous Electric Indigo, who in the 90s worked at Hardwax, the legendary record store in Berlin. We talk about her preferred DJ tools and she tucks in an anecdote, before playing her chosen track. Electric Indigo is a longstanding DJ, producer, composer and musician who started her path into the electronic scene in the early 90s and has since played in over 40 countries around the world. Aside from a long string of releases and gigs under her belt, Electric Indigo is also the founder of female:pressure, an international support network and online database for female, non-binary and non conforming gender artists. Her music and contribution has earned her wide and deep respect from the international music scene that has taken her to play in a long list of well established clubs as well as winning awards such as the “outstanding artist award Musik 2012” and the Kunstpreis Musik 2020 from The Republic of Austria. In this chat, we discover the artists early entry point into the techno scene, as she fortuitously interviewed Underground Resistance members, her work at iconic vinyl store Hardwax in Berlin in the early 90s and her experience running a label and playing throughout three decades. We also find out more about female:pressure and their research project “FACTS survey” which quantifies gender composition of music festivals and events line-ups since 2012. We discuss about the many challenges that non-male, non-white artists may face when working in the music industry, and we leave inspired by Electric Indigo’s take on tackling these challenges with open communication and joint committment with artists, promoters and music lovers. Jamaica Suk is a poly instrumentalist musician, performer, producer and DJ. Besides her residency of Pornceptual she also co-owns her label Gradient. Suk grew up in California and developed a passion for music from a very young age. Having studied piano, flute and bass, she worked as both a jazz and rock musician, before her adoration for electronic music took over and helped ignite her career as a DJ. In all the years she’s put in, Jamaica developed not only a profound relationship with music, but also an incredible work ethic that keeps her in the studio as well as on stage for 6 days a week. Jamaica describes her story from the early days with the music that influenced her career and led her to explore techno on a deeper and more personal level . Rome wasn’t built in a day, and as we see from her achievements, artists’ careers take continuous work and time to materialise. She also gives details on how she got involved in Pornceptual, her approach to deciding what music to release and how she is helping other musicians with 1:1 tutoring. Jamaica shines for her output and technical preparation, and if you continue listening till the end, Suk reveals her secret for continuing to be productive even when inspiration is nowhere to be found. This week Declassify delves into a newer and fascinating part of classical music practices, or it is really classical music? Our guest for this week’s episode is acousmatic composer and researcher Alexis Weaver. Her principal interest lies in composing fixed-media acousmatic music, she has also composed soundtracks for animation, short videos, radio, theatre, and dance. In 2018, Alexis was awarded the National Council of Women’s Australia Day Prize for her research undertaken during her Honours year on the visibility and practice of female electroacoustic composers and she has just completed a Master of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium, where she teaches composition and music technology subjects. This week we unpack the immersive realm of electronic music, the act of sound-making as music, accessibility to learning about music and music technology through to resources and programs for diverse listening, representation and engagement. ------Selected Resources (A full list is available in the transcript)Alexis Weaverhttps://www.alexismarieweaver.com/ https://alexismarieweaver.bandcamp.com/ Alexis Weaver: Increasing the Volume: The Creative Diversity and Future Visions of Female Electroacoustic Composers in Australiahttps://openjournals.library.sydney.edu.au/index.php/SCM/article/view/12675 Tara Rodgers.

F16s are leaving to strike Rojava from the same airbase they left to strike ISIS. An attack on Rojava is an attack on the people's right to live, their democracy, solidarity, and women's liberation. In March 2016, female:pressure launched the Rojava campaign aimed at raising awareness of the #Rojava resistance movement in northern Syria. There, women partner at all levels of decision-making and were building a new society with social justice, religious freedom, ecological principles and gender equality. This program contains a mix from the compilation prepared by female:pressure, broadcasted first on Women's day 2016. female pressure is an international network of female, transgender and non-binary artists in the fields of electronic music and digital arts, with more than 2.500 members from 79 countries. All the proceeds from the Rojava campaign were/are dedicated to Rojava's women for the construction of a women's village, called Jinwar - village of free women. The compilation is available at Bandcamp under the name Music, Awareness & Solidarity w/ Rojava Revolution.

Underrepresentation of women in music is nothing new. Female:Pressure released a report in 2013 that revealed that the average female representation at major music festivals was a dismal  8.4 per cent. However, some booking agencies and collectives are spearheading an effort to rebalance line-ups across the world. This episode of the Ninja Tune podcast finds Emma Burgess-Olson AKA Discwoman & Technicolour Record's UMFANG in conversation with Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, co-founder of Discwoman, a booking agency that exclusively represents cis women, trans women, and genderqueer artists. Together with their roster, their agency is helping to increase inclusivity in dance music whilst putting on exciting & diverse club nights that have seen their profile grow exponentially across the industry. We caught up with them before their September show at Corsica Studios, London.
