Phil's extensive background in sports and music, including managing Grammy winner Fantastic Negrito, led him to create this non-profit.  02:05 From Ronnie Lott's Idea to Follow the Music  Phil Green shares how a conversation with NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott about a new venue sparked the idea for Follow the Music.   04:32 Fantastic Negrito's Journey and Industry Lessons  Phil recounts the incredible comeback story of Fantastic Negrito, who achieved Grammy success at 50 after a major label dropped him and a severe accident. This experience highlighted the music industry's challenges and the importance of artists finding their unique voice, shaping Phil's current work with young people.  08:33 The Genesis and Mission of Follow the Music Phil elaborates on the founding of Follow the Music, emphasizing its mission to help young artists follow their true passions and express their authentic selves.   11:57 Supporting Young Artists and Community  Phil explains how Follow the Music collaborates with institutions like the Oakland School for the Arts to develop and showcase young musicians. Half the band chose to perform as a trio, displaying incredible grace and mutual support despite differing opinions, delivering a stunning and emotionally charged performance.  27:39 Resilience and Reinvention in Oakland  Phil addresses the challenges faced by Oakland, including the departure of major sports teams, but emphasizes the city's pride and resilience. He highlights how music education, much like sports, teaches discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, filling a vital gap in youth development.  36:18 Future Vision and Lasting Impact  Phil sees Follow the Music as a model for other cities, aiming to uplift existing music education programs rather than replicate them. He reflects on the deep personal reward of helping young people navigate the future through music, emphasizing that the impact on their lives has far surpassed his initial expectations.

“You can't implement skills-based hiring by flipping a switch. It's about changing mindsets, systems, and the language your organization uses to describe talent.”-Ashley WallvoordIn this episode of Psych Tech @ Work, me and my AI co-host, Mayda Tokens, welcome fellow I/O psychologist (and LSU Tiger!) Ashley Walvoord, Senior Vice President of Talent at Verizon. We are joined by my AI co-host Mayda Tokens who continues to impress at times and but showing a tendency to be pretty boring at other times and always telling really bad jokes (I think the API to Chat-GPT 5o gets a very different sense of humor than the consumer version).I reached out to Ashley after seeing her SIOP presentation about Verizon's skills based hiring (and organizational transformation) program. Her and her fellow presenters-Max McDaniel (Verizon)Christina-Norris Watts (J & J)Ruth Imose (J & J)Jason Frizel (Walmart)provided amazing insights into their company's' amazing and inspiring skills based hiring programs. The hype around skills based hiring these days makes it seem easy. But talk is cheap- and doing skills based hiring right takes a total ALL IN approach. - one that is rooted in the commitment to become a true skills based organization.Ashley has lived this life and her experience provides an awesome preview of how one of the world's largest organizations is reimagining hiring and development through skills and AI. We are all lucky to have her on the show!Verizon's transformation provides a rare look at how enterprise-scale companies operationalize skills-based hiring while navigating the practical realities of change management, technology integration, and workforce readiness.SummaryThis conversation bridges strategy and execution, offering a clear-eyed view of how a Fortune 50 company is aligning people, process, and technology around skills. Ashley shares the lessons learned from Verizon's commitment to a multi-year, organization wide transformation. A journey with many whistlestops along the way— from defining skills frameworks to embedding them in hiring and internal mobility.Key Themes1. Building Skills Infrastructure at ScaleAshley explains how skills-based hiring starts long before implementation — requiring shared language, governance, and validation across the enterprise. Verizon's approach focuses on sustainability and integration rather than one-off pilots.2. Human Oversight in an AI-Driven SystemAI plays a growing role in matching and mobility, but Ashley underscores that human judgment remains central. The goal isn't automation for its own sake, but augmentation — using technology to help people make better, more equitable decisions.3. Culture Change Through Data TransparencyVerizon's success depends on building trust with employees and leaders by showing the “why” behind skills data and AI insights. Visibility into how skills are used for development and promotion helps drive adoption.4. Her powerful TED Talk, Breath as an Act of Rebellion, has inspired audiences around the world.  She joins us today to share her journey and insights. This information is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. Consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any plant medicine Sepideh's Journey Sepideh Eivazi grew up in Iran, navigating a life constrained by societal and political limitations. At the age of 20, she moved to the United States with her younger sister in search of freedom and opportunity. Starting from scratch, she worked in hospitality in Las Vegas, learning about the event industry from the ground up, embracing mentorship, and observing inspiring and cautionary examples of leadership. Eventually, she relocated to Los Angeles, where she joined Elevated Meeting Solutions and later launched her own wellness platform, Dawn of the Earth, which integrates tea culture, somatic breathwork, nervous system regulation, and psychedelic integration practices. Her work focuses on conscious leadership, healing trauma, and empowering others, bridging both Eastern and Western wellness traditions. Freedom and Feminism Sepideh shares the challenges Iranian women face under restrictive societal norms, particularly the compulsory wearing of a veil. She emphasizes the importance of personal choice, freedom, and human qualities over appearance or imposed rules.  Singing as Healing and Expression Reclaiming her voice through singing became an emotional and symbolic act of empowerment, connecting Sepideh to her heritage and generations of suppressed women in Iran. She views singing as both a personal healing practice and a form of standing for those who cannot freely express themselves. Mentorship and Community Sepideh credits several mentors and supportive figures for her growth. She emphasizes the importance of showing up for others, paying support forward, and nurturing a sense of community. Leading Beyond Burnout Burnout is a result of prolonged stress, fight, flight, freeze responses, and neglecting emotional and physical health. Sepideh utilizes somatic breathwork to help leaders and employees regulate their nervous systems, process suppressed emotions, and create safe spaces for vulnerability and healing. She explains that burnout is preventable when organizations and individuals prioritize conscious, holistic self-care. Plant Medicine and Integration Sepideh views plant medicine as a tool for mental health and emotional integration, highlighting it as a catalyst for self-awareness rather than a recreational high. She works with clients to integrate insights from plant medicine into daily life, cultivating emotional intelligence, forgiveness, and presence. Her approach combines body awareness, somatic practices, and intentional reflections. Performance, Presence, and Ritual In high-performance industries, constant productivity and measurement can undermine confidence and well-being. Sepideh advocates rituals and presence-based practices, such as mindful breathing, sensory activation, and slowing down during daily activities, to reconnect with oneself and cultivate sustainable performance without anxiety or self-judgment. Future Vision and Celebration Sepideh measures success through progress and the ability to give back to humanity. She values learning, growth, and curiosity over rigid goals or timelines, viewing each step forward as a meaningful achievement for herself and others. Our teacher today is Jan Mohr, CEO of Chapters Group, a publicly traded serial acquisition holding company with ambitions of becoming one of Europe's technology champions. Chapters' origins date back to a small software startup founded near Frankfurt in 1998. Twenty years later, the core business was sold to a strategic buyer, consolidating the market with the proceeds of the sale in 2018. With Jan's influence, the company embarked on a new chapter, pivoting to build the preferred home for mission-critical businesses across the old continent. Over the last five years, they have been on an absolute tear, having founded four distinct acquisition platforms that collectively acquired around 60 operating companies, demonstrated the ability to build a prolific M&A machine, while also improving the operations of the companies they acquire. Virtually every company in the world today is, on some level, thinking about AI in terms of threats, opportunities, and implications for their business. Perhaps nowhere is that discourse more animated right now than in the software industry. And as you'll hear from Jan, AI's potential to be a transformative force driving not only efficiencies, but also TAM expansion and most importantly, tangible customer value, is already evident throughout their business. This episode is a first for the show - a repeat of a previously posted interview on The New Quantum Era podcast! I think you'll agree the reason for the repeat is a great one - this episode, recorded at the APS Global Summit in March, features a conversation John Martinis, co-founder and CTO of QoLab and newly minted Nobel Laureate! Last week the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences made an announcement that John would share the 2025 Nobel Prize for Physics with John Clarke and Michel Devoret “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.” It should come as no surprise that John and I talked about macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantization in electrical circuits, since those are precisely the attributes that make a superconducting qubit work for computation.  The work John is doing at Qolab, a superconducting qubit company seeking to build a million qubit device, is really impressive, as befits a Nobel Laureate and a pioneer in the field. In our conversation we explore the strategic shifts, collaborative efforts, and technological innovations that are pushing the boundaries of quantum computing closer to building scalable, million-qubit systems. Key HighlightsEmerging from Stealth Mode & Million-Qubit System Paper:Discussion on QoLab's transition from stealth mode and their comprehensive paper on building scalable million-qubit systems.Focus on a systematic approach covering the entire stack.Collaboration with Semiconductor Companies:Unique business model emphasizing collaboration with semiconductor companies to leverage external expertise.Comparison with bigger players like Google, who can fund the entire stack internally.Innovative Technological Approaches:Integration of wafer-scale technology and advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes.Emphasis on adjustable qubits and adjustable couplers for optimizing control and scalability.Scaling Challenges and Solutions:Strategies for achieving scale, including using large dilution refrigerators and exploring optical communication for modular design.Plans to address error correction and wiring challenges using brute force scaling and advanced materials.Future Vision and Speeding Up Development:QoLab's goal to significantly accelerate the timeline toward achieving a million-qubit system.Insight into collaborations with HP Enterprises, NVIDIA, Quantum Machines, and others to combine expertise in hardware and software.Research Papers Mentioned in this Episode:Position paper on building scalable million-qubit systems

The Healthtech Marketing Podcast presented by HIMSS and healthlaunchpad

In this AI Quick Take episode, I take a look at one of the most fascinating yet misunderstood applications of AI in healthcare: digital twins. While this concept has been around in engineering and technology circles, I wanted to explore what it really means for us as healthcare marketers and why it could be a game-changer for our industry.A digital twin is essentially a virtual model of a real-world process, system, or even a person. Think of it as a digital replica that can simulate how real things behave. In healthcare, we're already seeing exciting applications, such as simulated patient flow through emergency departments, personalized treatment modeling for individual patients, and even simulations of medical devices like pacemakers or MRI machines. What makes these particularly powerful for marketers is that, unlike static personas, digital twins continuously ingest real-world data and evolve over time. I outlined three key marketing use cases that could transform how we work. Creating digital twins of our buyers - essentially persona modeling on steroids. Simulating the value of products before customers ever buy.Helping prospects experience outcomes before deployment. The bottom line is that digital twins could help us solve healthcare's notorious long sales cycles by moving from "trust us, our solution works" to "here's exactly how it'll work in your specific environment." I believe the vendors who master this capability over the next few years will have a significant competitive advantage, being able to prove value in weeks rather than months through immediate outcome simulation.Key Topics Covered“Introduction to Digital Twins (00:00:00)”“Healthcare Applications (00:02:00)”“Marketing Advantages (00:04:00)”“Buyer Digital Twins (00:05:00)”“Product Marketing Applications (00:07:00)”“Sales Enablement (00:08:00)”“Getting Started - Customer Data (00:10:00)”“Content Development Strategy (00:11:00)”“Demo Differentiation (00:11:00)”“Future Vision (00:13:00)”“Closing Advice (00:14:00)”If you are interested in discussing this or any other topic, let's have a chat.  Reach out to me directly to schedule a no-obligation discussion. In this episode, we dive into the extraordinary journey of an ordinary man who was thrust into the legal system and, through relentless struggle, uncovered the hidden machinery driving family courts, governments, and corporations. What began as a personal battle over divorce and child support revealed a multi-trillion-dollar industry built on negotiable instruments, exposing how the system profits off human lives. Through years of trial, error, and perseverance, Cal Washington discovered the ancient roots of Lex Mercatoria—the Law Merchant—and how commerce, not justice, underpins the courts we think serve us. From facing jail time to holding judges accountable, to creating notices of liability that caused officials and apparently even a royal to step down, his story is one of grit, awakening, and empowerment. From running a rogue lemonade stand in third grade (complete with hired second-graders) to leading the charge in agentic AI, Anik Singal's entrepreneurial journey is as unconventional as it is inspiring. In this episode of BizNinja Entrepreneur Radio, host Tyler Jorgenson dives into Anik's fascinating backstory—from dropping a full-ride pre-med scholarship, stumbling through MLMs, and convincing his skeptical father that a $30,000 ClickBank check wasn't a scam, to building multimillion-dollar businesses like Sendlane, WebinarCon, and now Ugentic AI.Anik opens up about the highs and lows of his career, including the near-collapse that left him $1.7 million in debt, the life-threatening stress of Crohn's disease, and the brutal lessons he learned while trying (and failing) to build a tech company without the right foundation. He candidly shares how the “golden touch” complex nearly destroyed him—and how humility, mentors, and relentless learning pulled him back. Now, with Ugentic AI, Anik is on a mission to bring cutting-edge, autonomous AI workflows to small businesses—the 75% of entrepreneurs still untouched by AI technology. He reveals how Ugentic AI can give small businesses a competitive edge, streamline workflows, and even reclaim the one thing every entrepreneur craves: freedom. Along the way, he sprinkles in life lessons, powerful takeaways, and a heartfelt reminder that entrepreneurship is about creating the life you want—not just the business you build.TakeawaysThe Entrepreneurial Signs Start Early: Even childhood hustles can reveal entrepreneurial instincts—sometimes in hilariously “non-kosher” ways.Big Wins Come with Big Lessons: Success in one arena doesn't guarantee success in another. My guest today is Mark Bertolini. Mark is the former CEO of Aetna and the current CEO of Oscar Health. He shares one of the most extraordinary leadership stories I've encountered—surviving a catastrophic skiing accident that left him in chronic pain for 18 years while simultaneously leading one of healthcare's most successful corporate turnarounds. His personal experience navigating his son's life-threatening cancer battle and his own medical challenges fundamentally changed his approach to healthcare, leading to innovations in employee welfare that Wall Street initially questioned but ultimately celebrated. During his tenure at Aetna, Mark generated 652% total shareholder return by implementing revolutionary employee policies and is now applying these lessons at Oscar Health to disrupt the $4 trillion healthcare industry with a technology-first approach. We discuss the power of servant leadership, employer-sponsored insurance vs individual choice-based plans, and the horizons of healthcare.
