Joe Royle – the only living person to achieve legendary status at Everton as both a player and manager (the other being the late, great Howard Kendall) – invites Chris Beesley to his house for a special episode of Goodison Park: My Home. Royle, who grew up in Norris Green, attending Ranworth Square Primary School before going on to Quarry Bank High School where he developed into a talented all-round sportsman, also excelling in the high jump and swimming, became Everton's youngest-ever player at the time when he was controversially picked ahead of ‘The Golden Vision' Alex Young by Harry Catterick to make his debut at Blackpool aged 16 years and 282 days on January 15, 1966, a record that stood for over 42 years until it was eclipsed by Jose Baxter. Although Royle was part of the Blues team that lost 1-0 after extra time to West Bromwich Albion in the 1968 FA Cup final, alongside the ‘Holy Trinity' midfield of Kendall, Colin Harvey and Alan Ball, plus the likes of captain Brian Labone, goalkeeper Gordon West, fellow Scouser Tommy Wright and his good friend John Hurst, he was top scorer in Everton's 1969/70 League Championship-winning side. Once reaching 29 goals in all competitions in 1968/69, by the time Royle's Everton career had finished, he had netted more times for the club (119) than any player since Dixie Dean. Returning to Goodison Park as manager in November 1994 with the team bottom of the Premier League, he saved the Blues from relegation while also becoming the only manager in Everton history to win a trophy in his first season in charge. Some 30 years on, Royle remains the last Everton manager to secure major silverware for the club, while the following campaign (1995/96), he steered them to sixth place, which was their only top-half finish in the first decade of the Premier League. Now 75, he explains how the circumstances behind his departure continue to perplex him but as a True Blue, he was delighted to return to the Goodison hot seat for one last time as caretaker boss alongside his former player David Unsworth against Norwich City in 2016. It's the culmination of a successful mission during which the probe has measured the solar wind and flown through solar storms. We speak with C. Alex Young, the Associate Director for Science Communication in the Heliophysics Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center about the highlights of the mission and what's next for the intrepid spacecraft.Pinning down the how and when Neanderthals interbred with humansStudies of Neanderthal remains have revealed that many modern humans have around two per cent Neanderthal DNA in our genomes. A study led by Leonardo Iasi, from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, shows that the mixture happened over a period of 7,000 years, lasting from about 50,000 years ago until the Neanderthals started to disappear. The Neanderthal genes that persist in our genome are tied to metabolism and immunity, which might be because humans were traveling to new places and eating new foods to which Neanderthals were already adapted. Iasi's research was published in the journal Science. What Donner and Blitzen might have been saying to RudolphResearchers from Concordia University have released a new study about caribou vocalizations, and what the animals might be signaling to each other. The vocalizations are similar to those of elk and moose, but as herd animals, caribou signaling is less about summoning mates from a distance, and more about males warning competitors to fly off elsewhere. Biologists Robert Weladji and Laura Puch analyzed recordings of these calls to search for information buried in the grunts. They found that the frequencies gave signals as to the age and size of the animal. The research was published in the journal Bioacoustics.Do crustaceans feel pain? A new study of their neural activity says yesBy monitoring the neural activity in crabs while delivering painful stimuli, researchers concluded the response they measured is associated with what we would think would be a painful experience. This study, in the journal Biology, adds to the evidence that crustaceans can sense painful stimuli as the kind of negative experience that we tend to associate with pain. Lynne Sneddon, from the University of Gothenburg led the work. Scientists are making a map of the human body accurate down to the individual cellThe Human Cell Atlas is a mammoth global project to create a detailed map of all cell types and functions in the human body, from early development to old age. While not yet complete, it's already revolutionizing how scientists can probe the human body with significant implications for future healthcare — from diagnosing diseases, to developing drugs, to ushering in a new era of personalized medical treatments.

The Reds scored 8 runs in three games. They struck out 39 times, including 15 yesterday, while walking 5 times. In terms of batting average and OBP, they are AMONG THE VERY WORST in Major League Baseball. And it's not going to change….. It might be over the next seven days against the two worst teams in baseball, but until the injured return or the guys here now find a magic Jeanie….it isn't getting better. And btw….the Reds made a deal last night, acquiring giants outfielder Austin slater. He's 31 years old…. basically a fifth outfielder on a good team. The Reds have lots of those already. Slater is hitting .200 in 45 games with one home run. They traded right-hander Alex Young to get him. Young has pitched brilliantly at Louisville after starting the year injured….pitched well last year for the team. Colorado comes to town for the first of four tonight. THE REDS ARE six games under .500, 10 ½ games behind the brewers in the NL Central. We will talk more about the team in a minute… The rosters for the all-star game came out yesterday..there are 33 first-time all-stars and 19 players under the age of 27, including the Red's very own Elly De La Cruz! One of the best stories is former Red Jeff Hoffman. He's 31 years old and is going to his first all-star game as a member of the Phillies. The Reds let him walk out the door after an excellent 2022 season. How about FC Cincinnati? Like all of last year, they now have the best record in the MLS after blasting Inter Miami FC at TQL stadium over the weekend. FCC has lost just four times all season and will host Charlotte FC on Saturday.

This week I brought on the show, playwright, screenwriter, director, and actor, John Pollono.  I wanted to go down the road a little bit about his remarkable journey in the business which expands across theatre and short films. John is one of the founders of the Jabberwocky Theatre Company in 2004 which became the Rogue Machine Theatre in 2008 where he produced his earlier plays. His big break came with his screenplay for the acclaimed biographical drama film, Stronger which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. The screenplay, based on Bauman's memoir Stronger, was number two on the Black List (most-liked "motion picture screenplays not yet produced) in 2016.Stronger, starring multiple award-winning actors, Jake Gyllenhaal, is the inspiring real-life story of Jeff Bauman --- an ordinary man who captured the hearts of his city and the world to become a symbol of hope after surviving but losing his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and must adjust to his new life. This project came along for John right after signing with Los Angelos - based Creative Artists Agency. Producers, Alex Young and Todd Lieberman were already familiar with Pollono's work. And they were on the hunt for something. That was when adapting Stronger became a prospect. At the time, the book was not yet published so he had a chance to review the unpublished book. Producer Scott Silver was looking to mentor a more junior writer for the Stronger film and fortuitously, John was a good fit having grown up 20 minutes from where the characters take place, he was the best candidate for the job. So, with a follow-up pitch, the book's film adaptation screenplay was sold to Lionsgate.Writing Stronger (the film) was a double success for Pollono. Not only was he mentored directly by the incredible Scott Silver and receiving writing directions about theme, structure, etc, but the project brought him some notoriety as well by topping number two on the blacklist a year before production. This interview was a pretty cool conversation and I did not hold back getting John to share all the gems of the business he's learned and fun questions like what it's like working with Frank Darabont and working on the new Hulk Hogan movie currently in production.Enjoy my conversation with John Pollono.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

Welcome to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast! We welcome San Jose Sharks' Director of Player Development Todd Marchant back to the show for our 50th episode! Todd was our very first guest on the new San Jose Hockey Now Podcast, and we celebrate our 50th episode by getting his thoughts on tons of Sharks prospects, from Quentin Musty to Alex Young. (57:13)But first! It was the NHL Scouting Combine this week and Sheng was on the ground in Buffalo. He shares loads of buzz, rumors and some confirmed prospect interviews. He added a new name to his list from yesterday. (3:25)We cover whether we think Macklin Celebrini is actually going to return to the NCAA or sign with the Sharks, after multiple interviews have come out that Macklin is undecided at this point. (16:00)We have some coaching search updates, including some rumored finalists to share. Also, did the San Jose Sharks ever reach out to David Carle or Joel Ward? (25:05)Are the Sharks going to be active in free agency this summer? Jeff Marek floated the possibility of Jake Guentzel as a FA target, and we give our thoughts on that possibility. Also, will Eetu Makinemi be back? (33:25)Our last topic is the retirement of Joe Pavelski. We share some of our thoughts about his tremendous career, and whether he has enough of a resume for the Hall of Fame. (42:50)And now it's time for Todd Marchant! (57:13)We decided to go through the San Jose Sharks system, from the 2023 Draft to the 2020 with Todd, discussing some well-known and lots of lesser-known prospects as well, focusing on mostly non-Barracuda prospects.First, the 2023 Draft!Quentin Musty (59:10)Kasper Halttunen (1:03:47)Brandon Svoboda (1:05:15)Luca Cagnoni (1:08:03)Axel Landén (1:10:28)Eric Pohlkamp (1:12:10)David Klee (1:14:30)Yegor Rimashevsky (1:16:15)2022:Filip Bystedt (1:19:45)Cam Lund (1:21:45)Mattias Hävelid (1:23:10)Michael Fisher (1:26:35)Mason Beaupit (1:28:45)Jake Furlong (1:30:20)Joey Muldowney, Eli Barnett and Reese Laubach (1:34:02)Who's left from the 2021 Draft, not playing with the Barracuda or the San Jose Sharks?Theo Jacobsson (1:37:19)Yevgeni Kashnikov (1:38:25)2020:Alex Young (1:39:25)Timofei Spitserov (1:40:25)Brandon Coe (1:41:30)We also discuss with Todd some prospects not drafted by the San Jose Sharks, starting with David Edstrom, acquired in the Tomas Hertl trade. In a wide-ranging conversation, Loach delves into his vast body of work, including “Kes,” “Cathy Come Home,” “Riff Raff,” “Raining Stones,” “Land and Freedom,” and “Ladybird, Ladybird,” where he describes being “overwhelmed” by the performance of Liverpool actress Crissy Rock. He also talks about making iconic 1968 drama documentary “The Golden Vision” about Everton FC, its supporters, and center forward Alex Young. Additionally, Ken and Nev break down the similarities between making a film and creating a winning team on the football pitch.

Losing Friedl for an extended time will put a strain on this roster that the Reds aren't quite ready for. But here we go. With Friedl being out to possibly mid-June, who will replace him in the Reds outfield? It feels like the Reds lineup will be ok, the fielding is a completely different story. Also, there are seemingly a rash of injuries the Reds are dealing with in Nick Martinez, Brandon Williamson, Alex Young, and Sam Moll. We aren't worried, though, and we'll tell you why. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…
