Greetings to everyone out there on the airwaves, to a new broadcast of the ESOA Podcast. This month's episode is number 97, and my guest is Sven Kupfer. He began his first forays into DJing in 93 using various formats such as vinyl, cassette, audio tape and CD. Over the years, he's played at various clubs such as Farblager, Seilfabrik Zwickau, Weißer Hase in Berlin and Velvet in Hamburg, as well as on platforms like Love Parade, Ampathy and Beatconnect. Since at least 2014, he's also been working in the studio himself, releasing, amongst other things, his first LP Facets in 2020 and his second LP, Seasons, in 2023. These were released on the Dudes on Decks Records, which he personally runs. He best describes his sound as minimal, techno or progressive. In any case, his sets are wildly versatile and uncompromisingly forward-driving. See for yourselves here – exclusively for you, here is ESOA Podcast 097 by Sven Kupfer. Let's get straight to it and have loads of fun. David and Trevor are joined by William Remmers to discuss THE LOVE PARADE and MONTE CARLO, the first two films in this reissued set of classic Pre-Code musical comedies.
This time, the roles reverse as our very own host Daria Suvorova-Konstandin joins Cynthia Mensah-Neglokpe on the other side of the mic. Together with moderator Paloma Frau, Director of Cultural Programming at Fotografiska Berlin, the two authors and cultural curators discuss their new book, The Feeling of Berlin.Written as a love letter to Berlin, it tells the city's story through 33 portraits of women, each an icon in her own unique way. From club legend Britt Kanja and Love Parade co-founder Danielle de Picciotto to Michelin-starred chef Sophie Rudolph and next-gen creatives like Cloudy Zakrocki – the book reveals their insider tips and favorite spots. In this episode, Daria and Cynthia offer insights into the project: which stories touched them most, how they chose their protagonists, and how they managed to write an entire book alongside many other projects. They discuss challenges and successes, discipline and motivation – and how an idea evolved into 250 carefully curated pages. If you enjoy this conversation, don't forget to rate and review us on your favorite podcast platform.Read more about the Women Authors of Achievement (WAA) Podcast via waa.berlin/aboutFollow us on Instagram & find us on LinkedInSubscribe to our newsletter via waa.berlin/newsletter ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

1,5 Millionen Menschen.
In this special episode of Super Progressive, I sit down with Paul van Dyk. We chat about the evolution of progressive house and trance, the fluid boundaries between genres in the 90s, and the iconic clubs that shaped the electronic music scene, from his early days in Berlin's underground to his unforgettable residency at New York's Twilo. We also delve into the significance of the Love Parade and the DIY ethos that fueled the scene's growth. This interview comes just ahead of Paul's new album, ‘This World Is Ours'. This album, due for release on April 11th via his VANDIT Records imprint, is his first studio album in five years. Who's to blame for the Love Parade Disaster? This week, The Alarmist (Rebecca Delgado Smith) welcomes guest Becky Yamamoto to discuss the Duisburg, Germany music festival turned nightmare in 2010. What was intended as a free day of music, love and camaraderie ended in panic taking the lives of 21 people and injuring hundreds more. Was this a crowd control problem, a venue issue or a lack of adequate organization? Perhaps all of the above? Producer Clayton Early and Fact Checker Chris Smith join the conversation. This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp.Make a one time Donation while we recover from the Eaton Canyon Fires.Join our Patreon!Join our Discord!Tell us who you think is to blame at http://thealarmistpodcast.comEmail us at thealarmistpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Instagram @thealarmistpodcastFollow us on Twitter @alarmistThe Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/alarmist. Interview with Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto ! Part 4 hackedepicciotto are Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto. Both are legends of their own making: Danielle de Picciotto moved to Berlin in 1987, to become the lead singer of the band „Space Cowboys“, the co-initiator of the Love Parade, a collaborator of the Ocean Club with Gudrun Gut, and Alexander's partner in crime. Alexander Hacke is founding member and bass player of Einstürzende Neubauten. The artist couple, romantically married in 2006, has creatively interacted with countless international projects for almost 2 decades now besides regularly releasing their own compositions. Their live shows are, to put it mildly, intense. Danielle specializes in unusual instruments such as the Hurdy Gurdy, the auto harp and the cemence besides playing the violin and piano; Alexander is master of the bass, guitar and drums. Together they create beautiful, existentialistic, acoustic soundscapes, which roar and vibrate simultaneously leaving their audiences shaken but overjoyed. Danielle, author of two books, writes most of their lyrics, be it the poetic spoken word moments or the momentous choirs they compose together. Alexander Hacke, an excellent throat singer and vocalist, growls his grnarly, rumbling cries that float eerily over their nomadic desert drones, with screeching birds, bees or wild wind accompanying slow, heavy riffs that start as a whisper and end in a volcanic, rolling wave of apocalyptic frenzy. The collage of this mixed with melancholic, translucent harmonies, very heavy & low bass chords, and electronics are a mesmerizing universe of sound and emotion which has generated an ever growing group of enthusiastic listeners. The Best of hackedepicciotto (Live in Napoli) showcases live interpretations of music from across their career. The album includes reinterpretations of tracks from all of their studio albums: Keepsakes (2023), a tender exploration of friendship and loss, The Silver Threshold (2021), their defiant reaction to the pandemic, Perseverantia (2016), which dealt with the artists nomadic lifestyle, Menetekel (2017), which embodies their collective despair at the state of the world, and powerful energy of The Current (2020), recorded by the Irish Sea. It's time for another round of Studios Year by Year, starting over with Paramount 1930! And this time Dave has brought even more nostalgic reading material to give some context for this studio content. We also launch another new series feature: a review of our favourite movies from the previous 1930-1948 round. Turning to the Paramount movies we watched for this episode, we struggle to come to terms with the pointless battle of the sexes in Lubitsch's The Love Parade, starring Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald, who are having a lot of sexy Pre-Code fun until the dictates of storytelling demand conflict; and struggle through a nigh-unwatchable transfer/copy of the sturdy operetta The Vagabond King, starring MacDonald and Dennis King. In both films, the adorable Lillian Roth delights. And finally, as if all of that weren't enough, a New Year's Eve throwback (by the time this is posted) in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto: we watched the beloved When Harry Met Sally and the cult classic 200 Cigarettes at the Revue Cinema. You are not supposed to use the word 'panic' in the context of human behaviour in fires, yet this episode contains 196 instances of it. Why? because we try to get to the bottom of the thing! Can panic be both a myth and a reality? Join us as we challenge the age-old narratives of panic in emergencies with our distinguished guest, Professor Daniel Nilsson, from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. We unravel the misconceptions surrounding human behaviour during fires, spotlighting the harmful effects of outdated myths perpetuated by media and literature. By debunking these myths, we aim to reshape fire safety engineering, focusing on realistic human reactions and informed decision-making.Our conversation takes you across cultural landscapes, from the Western world to the Soviet Union, questioning national claims of panic susceptibility and the portrayal of panic as a contagious force. Challenging the historical context, we try to figure out what panic is once you apply the scientific method to understand it.We also try to assess historical events like the Victoria Tower evacuation and the Love Parade tragedy, we underscore how engineering failures, not irrational behaviour, often lead to crowd disasters. Professor Nilsson and I delve into the psychology of decision-making during evacuations, emphasising the power of clear communication to prevent chaos and save lives. Finally, we reflect on the profound research of Quarantelli, who redefined panic through thousands of disaster case studies, revealing the complexity of human responses in crises. We explore how cultural contexts influence perceived panic behaviour by differentiating between non-rational and irrational actions. We aim to enlighten fire safety professionals and the broader audience on the importance of replacing the myth of panic with empathy and evidence-based strategies, fostering a safer and more understanding approach to emergency responses.Further reading?Sure.Daniel's paper in SFPE Europe magazine - is panic a myth or reality?Proloux and Sime paper where they challanged the limiting of information (1991)And if you really got into this, Jonathan Sime's PhDAlso, a ton of material on Human Behaviour and evacuation is waiting for you in the Uncovered Witness project!----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. The Best of HackedePicciotto (Live in Napoli) is Alexander Hacke and Danielle De Pictiotto's newest release showcasing live interpretations of music from across their career. For over 20 years Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten) and artist, musician and filmmaker Danielle de Picciotto (co-founder of Love Parade) have been developing and evolving a symbiotic working practise together, with a deep intuition of the kind that has distinguished a rare number of creative and romantic partnerships – think of the writers Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne, the artists Lee Miller and Man Ray or heroes of independent filmmaking, Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes – each partnership underlined by a creative equality that allowed both artists freedom to explore and expand. https://www.Instagrm.com/hackedepicciotto https://www.Facebook.com/hackepicciotto https://www.hackedepicciotto.bandcamp.com Website: https://www.hackedepicciotto.de Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris is sponsored by Shure Microphones.
Promiscuity is formally defined, according to Webster, as including not only frequent but indiscriminate sexual behavior. Preference for frequent sexual contacts is not necessarily the same as being sexually indiscriminating. The latter, in women, indicates a possible compulsive, and therefore, pathological quality to the excessive sexual behavior, referred to traditionally as nymphomania. (In men, it is called satyriasis.) Tune in and learn how promiscuity impacts your life!
For the tenth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest Alan Oldham representing stories from Detroit.ALAN OLDHAM has been called “Detroit's Renaissance Man,” equally as known for his art as for his music under the pseudonym DJ T-1000. The Detroit-born polymath, now living and working in Berlin, began his dual careers in the late 80s. First as the host of the “Fast Forward Program” on WDET FM 101.9, Detroit's first-ever radio show devoted exclusively to electronic music, and as a young indie comic artist, writing and drawing his own original creation, “Johnny Gambit” (predating the Marvel character). Oldham was later tapped by his childhood friend, Derrick May, to illustrate the label art for the now-classic records “Nude Photo” and “Beyond The Dance” on his fledgling Transmat label, and Detroit Techno history was made. Oldham was later hired by another childhood friend, Jeff Mills, to do freelance PR for the nascent Underground Resistance collective, writing press releases for the label. When Mills departed for a solo career, UR partner “Mad” Mike Banks tapped AO to replace him as DJ for their Australian Tour of 1992. The codename DJ T-1000 was adopted, and history was made once again. Jumpstart to infamy.Since then, as an international DJ, Oldham has spun all over the planet, as far afield as Tokyo, Manila, The Phillipines, and Shanghai. When he's not behind the decks at home clubs Tresor Berlin and RSO, on the road to places like Batumi, Georgia or Trapani, Italy, or in the studio making music for labels like RSPX/Rekids, BPitch Berlin, Suspected Music, Third Ear, Elypsia Records, or his own Pure Sonik Records label, he is making new paintings and organizing art openings showcasing his iconic works. Oldham has put on art happenings in Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna, and Detroit, as well as his iconic techno artworks being on view in Paris, London and Dusseldorf, as part of its traveling “Electronic: From Kraftwerk to the Chemical Brothers” exhibit. The multi-talented Oldham has also made his artistic debut in Kobe, Japan in 2022 with the exhibit “Massive Dynamic” at the Nick Jerky Art Cafe. In 2024, Oldham was also honored by the Mayor and Detroit City Council with a “Spirit of Detroit” Award for his musical and artistic contributions to his hometown. And back in Berlin, as part of Love Parade founder Dr. Motte's Rave The Planet team, Oldham helped Berlin Techno to achieve UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. Oldham's long-awaited EP as DJ T-1000 for Rekids sub-label RSPX is out now, as well as his new “Ask Me No Questions And I'll Tell You No Lies” EP on Pure Sonik Records, currently riding high on several Spotify techno charts including Mary Anne Hobbs' on BBC6. Joachim Garraud on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 8/28/24 After seven years at the Conservatoire de Nantes (Nantes' classical music conservatory), Joachim Garraud, a musician with a passion for technology, developed his musical and artistic skills to become one of France's most influential producers in the early 2000s. He has collaborated with David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé, OMD, Deep Dish, Eurythmics, Paul Johnson, Cassius, Cerrone, Moby and Vitalic. He has been a close collaborator to Bob Sinclar and Jean-Michel Jarre in their musical projects for over 20 years, and has co-composed and co-produced David Guetta's hits such as "Just A Little More Love", "Love Don't Let Me Go", "Love is Gone" and "The World is Mine". Joachim, nominated for a Grammy Award in the "Best Remix" category, was the first French artist to use Pro-Tools, a leading music production software back in 1992. His Paris recording studio became one of the main meeting points of the influential musical movement known as "French Touch", of Daft Punk, Cassius, and Air fame. In addition to his producer's hat, Joachim Garraud has won several awards for his live performances at festivals around the world, including Coachella, Love Parade, Technoparade, Lollapalooza, Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival and Exit Festival. Joachim developed stage concepts ranging from the use of live musical instruments (he was the first DJ to play the Keytar) to the development of techniques linking video and live show (the first DJ to use synchronized video or 3D visual elements) to the development of mixing tools such as the Pioneer DJM-800, which became a standard in the deejaying industry. Today, Joachim Garraud has produced nearly 300 titles and played close to 900 shows on 5 continents. www.joachimgarraud.com About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience.
