We welcome DJ Tool, Hyperaktivist and Nayme who together form the Berlinbased collective Mala Junta. Offering an escape and a safe bonding place for the German capital's queer scene, the group highlight the values of inclusivity, support, friendship and community, and feature a diverse music mix of the faster, funkier, grooving old school techno, effortlessly blended with psychedelic trance and breaks. Their ideals for family and community are further instilled by their strict limited capacity events, making Mala Junta one of Berlin’s best kept rave secrets. In this chat with Nayme, Ana Laura (Hyperaktivist) and Jo-Jo (DJ TOOL) we found out how the three bonded together and became friends well beyond the dancefloor and the events they have been organizing. We explore what it takes to embody and support diversity and inclusion and how dealing with challenging situations is an opportunity to lead by example. We address why we should all be talking openly about hard problems, and - between a few wine glasses and a laugh - we remind ourselves that there is something we all need now more than ever: more humanity, music and connection with each other. Christoph Heinze, better known as Inhalt der Nacht joins us for our next exclusive Home of Sound podcast. Berlin-born, his sound has been shaped by influences from cold wave and new wave, blended seamlessly with elements of the rock music that he was exposed to in his younger days. Having already established his name as one of the most progressive DJ’s in his genre, Christoph has pioneered his own label: Lebendig from which he pushes fellow Dj’s and artists’ productions alongside his own. 2019 saw Christoph’s track “Dosis'' spread through the underground scene of Berlin like wildfire after it appeared on the compilation album “The World of Monom Black” put out by the illustrious Dax J and his eponymous label . Christoph’s eminence nowadays has granted him residency to some of the biggest clubs across Germany including Griessmühle Berlin, Khidi Tbilisi and Rote Sonne Munich In this chat Christoph talks us through his experiences playing and producing techno and also his experimental explorations with theatre scoring in Cuba and eventually in Germany. We delve into Christoph’s past, recounting his first experiences with the underground scene as well the music that influenced him and provided the foundations to his raw and unbound resonate that we know today. We also look at labels and how artists are nurtured around them, and we get first hand insight into how he became resident of Rote Sonne, Griessemhule and Khidi and get a sense of the ever evolving drive of this artist toward fresh and non conventional sounds. Electric Indigo is a longstanding DJ, producer, composer and musician who started her path into the electronic scene in the early 90s and has since played in over 40 countries around the world. Aside from a long string of releases and gigs under her belt, Electric Indigo is also the founder of female:pressure, an international support network and online database for female, non-binary and non conforming gender artists. Her music and contribution has earned her wide and deep respect from the international music scene that has taken her to play in a long list of well established clubs as well as winning awards such as the “outstanding artist award Musik 2012” and the Kunstpreis Musik 2020 from The Republic of Austria. In this chat, we discover the artists early entry point into the techno scene, as she fortuitously interviewed Underground Resistance members, her work at iconic vinyl store Hardwax in Berlin in the early 90s and her experience running a label and playing throughout three decades. We also find out more about female:pressure and their research project “FACTS survey” which quantifies gender composition of music festivals and events line-ups since 2012. We discuss about the many challenges that non-male, non-white artists may face when working in the music industry, and we leave inspired by Electric Indigo’s take on tackling these challenges with open communication and joint committment with artists, promoters and music lovers. In this week’s podcast we are joined by Terstin and Julia; who are some of the key people behind Poland’s very own Revive Festival. Founded in 2017 by Terstin himself, Revive started as a small party of die-hard techno enthusiasts and ravers on the streets of Wroclaw, but over the years Revive has bloomed into one of the most internationally respected and esteemed events on the techno calendar. With success comes growth, and so Julia joined the Revive team in order to manage the booking side of things. In the podcast we delve into Terstin and Julia’s first connections with electronic music, their current and potential future plans for the festival and focussing on the positive sides of the world reset we’re currently experiencing. Julia also details her experience as a booker and with Terstin we touch on why the pandemic has created a golden opportunity for electronic music to flourish. Jamaica Suk is a poly instrumentalist musician, performer, producer and DJ. Besides her residency of Pornceptual she also co-owns her label Gradient. Suk grew up in California and developed a passion for music from a very young age. Having studied piano, flute and bass, she worked as both a jazz and rock musician, before her adoration for electronic music took over and helped ignite her career as a DJ. In all the years she’s put in, Jamaica developed not only a profound relationship with music, but also an incredible work ethic that keeps her in the studio as well as on stage for 6 days a week. Jamaica describes her story from the early days with the music that influenced her career and led her to explore techno on a deeper and more personal level . Rome wasn’t built in a day, and as we see from her achievements, artists’ careers take continuous work and time to materialise. She also gives details on how she got involved in Pornceptual, her approach to deciding what music to release and how she is helping other musicians with 1:1 tutoring. Jamaica shines for her output and technical preparation, and if you continue listening till the end, Suk reveals her secret for continuing to be productive even when inspiration is nowhere to be found. Sophia Saze is an artist, performer, musician, producer, DJ and label owner of Dusk and Haze. Born in Georgia and having grown up in the US, her sonic DNA has been shaped by a range of experiences and cultures. Sophia started venturing in the field, with trip hop and house and eventually landed on planet techno, which became her artistic home. She continues to focus on crafting her production, often centred on field recordings and has been releasing music for Francis Harris’ Kingdoms and her own Dusk and Haze. In this chat, we talk about Sophia’s journey where commitment has been a constant factor throughout her studies, and jobs thereafter (we also learn about an unusual job offer by the Central Intelligence Agency!). The artist talks about the challenges of leaving a secure job to focus on music and overcoming pressure from people doubting your work. We chat about Dusk and Haze from before it became a label in 2017 to new plans, including supporting emerging producers access tools and resources. And while Sophia shares about her creative process and writing her album ‘Self’, we are reminded that music fundamentally is a work that feels amazing when it comes from the heart. Lag is a Dj and very respected producer, who is strong in creating grooves and rhythms, often offbeat but still dancefloor oriented. His music has made regular appearances on labels such as Mord, Elements, THEM and lately Upperberry, plus a number of remixes on imprints such as Green Fetish Records, Coincidence Records and Metempsychosis Records. Beside being a strong producer and touring DJ, Lag is also an active supporter of up and coming producers with a Twitch live stream and series of feedback sessions. In this chat, we go deep into making offbeat music, why this may / may not work for everyone, and we explore the beginnings of ‘broken techno’. We talk about holding contrasting opinions with people and we also touch on the subjects of anxiety and depression. If this wasn’t enough for a single podcast (both Lag and I could talk forever!), we explore the natural narcissism that affects creators and the evergreen topic of finding fulfillment. Diego, in art Projekt Gestalten, is a DJ, producer, visual artist and founder of the VRAA Dj diva ranking and record label. Born in São Paulo, he experienced the freedom and creativity of Berlin and made this city his new home. One of the core members and DJ resident of the event series Pornceptual, Diego has been travelling the world to share his art and has played alongside Norman Nodge, Monoloc, Alienata, Jamaika Suk, The Lady Machine, Amanda Mussi and many others, including during a sweaty and intense Pornceptual X Boiler Room. In this podcast, we chat about why artists should not work for free and rather be picky on where they get involved; we talk about electronic music and the queer community in Brazil; the origin of Projekt Gestalten. And we learn the story of Diego going from opening a giant fan on the dancefloor to creating a DJ diva ranking and record label. We also discuss about racism and homophobia and the ‘white privileges’ and why it is important to systematically address this very diffused issue. She discovered a variety of electronic music from cassettes and eventually started her own DJ journey in the late 90s. Around 2007, she also started producing and launched her own imprint Out Of Place in 2015 together with her partner in crime (and in life) Volster. In our chat, we talk about the importance of music in social interactions and Insolate tells us how emotions are the main driver for her creation and for approaching remixes and collaborations such as the work done spontaneously with singer Sara Renar. Karam, in art Toubba, is a Dubai based, multi faceted DJ, promoter, founder of a festival and director of a production company. As an active supporter of the international underground music scene, he is dedicated to crafting his communication skills in order to deliver his message of encouragement to the world. Karam really cares about - to quote him literally - the sacred ground of expression we call dancefloor. Being born in Turkey and later having moved to Dubai, Karam has always had a sweet spot for uncovering and being a positive influence for underground music movements. In the early 2000, he became an MC for hip hop battles and later a vocalist for Metal bands. His personal journey brought him to discover electronic music with drum and bass and landed him to the realm of techno, which is currently what occupies a special place in his heart. In our chat, Karam paints the picture of the not-so-known underground music movements in Dubai and tells us about the launch of the festival Rave Affair whose objective is to put the place’s music culture on the world map. He is also, resident of Rave Movement, music director of Decibel DXB, he runs a business on the side, but what he really aspires to do is grow as a DJ. Last but not least, Karam shares how - to be understood and connect truly with others - we may want to learn to freely express the emotions in our heart and combine this with a sharp use of words to ensure the message is delivered clearly . -- Toubba -- IG www.instagram.com/_toubba_ FB: www.facebook.com/toubbamusic SC: www.soundcloud.com/toubba MixCloud: www.mixcloud.com/Toubba Founder: www.facebook.com/raveaffairfestival Music Director: www.facebook.com/decibeldxb Resident DJ Rave Movement www.facebook.com/ravemovementdubai Director Phenomena (production): https://www.instagram.com/phenomena.tv Bands: “ Evoken “ , “ My Dying Bride “ Goldie - Timeless : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhV9VbxV3Rw) Analog Room Dubai: https://www.instagram.com/analogroom Tacit (Dubai live techno artist): https://www.instagram.com/tacitmusik -- Home Of Sound -- Subscribe to our newsletter: bit.ly/HoS_Newsletter Subscribe on YouTube: bit.ly/HoSYoutubeSubscribe All latest links: https://linktr.ee/home_of_sound HoS X Adam Heaton: guest interview + playlist: https://www.adam-heaton.co.uk/playlists/home-of-sound
CONCEPTUAL, stage name for Simone Scardino, is a DJ, producer and cofounder of the multi-art event platform Friendship Collective. Simone, who just released an album on Oscar Mulero’s Warm Up Records, shares how you may want to find inspiration by looking inward instead of looking for something outside of yourself. Originally from South Italy, he moved to Rome and eventually to Berlin to follow his burning passion for music. At a very young age, he was accidentally introduced to the art of djing by a wedding performer. From that very moment, Simone was hooked and got inspired to start djing himself and later producing music as well. Driven by a strong willingness to represent and create spaces where multiple arts can blend together, Simone has been part of numerous projects and co-founded Friendship Collective, a multidisciplinary event that brings together music, visual arts and performances. In this chat, we talk about collaborations, being selective in sending demos, shaping your own musical direction and - as we get to know Simone’s path - discover one of his strongest values: being honest in any situation.
Jason is a South African / American entrepreneur and music lover. He founded his own music blog Indieshuffle and later SubmitHub, a platform connecting bloggers and playlist curators directly with artists and labels. His persistence led him to eventually be able to make his passion for music a full time business, while providing value to the music and media community. After years of running a music blog and reviewing releases, events, concerts as a side hustle, while working a normal 9-5 job, Jason landed a ‘big deal’ with a media company that helped him build a team of developers to scale the platform. Unfortunately, life went sideways when the big deal fell through and the media company went off business. Jason was left stranded in Europe with not much left besides debts to pay and his drive to create something meaningful, but his can do attitude got him back on his feet and made things work out. In this interview, we uncover Jason’s path from being born in Cape Town, to studying and working in the U.S., travelling in Europe and building his own business. We talk about entrepreneurial challenges such as making things sustainable and hiring people. Furthermore, we extensively discuss the state of the media in the music industry and the obstacles that artists are facing nowadays to break through. Last but not least, we uncover how to overcome difficulties and how persistence is key, like throwing spaghetti at the wall until it sticks. -- Jason Grishkoff (SubmitHub) -- Connect with Jason: Jason@submithub.com (if you are interested in using SubmitHub, you can also mention this podcast and get credits) Speak with Jason: Submit hub chatroom SubmitHub: https://www.submithub.com Indie Shuffle: https://www.indieshuffle.com Adam Heaton (Spotify Playlist curator and also our HoS guest #8): https://www.adam-heaton.co.uk/playlists Book we mentioned about the founder of CD Baby: Derek Sivers - Anything you want -- Home Of Sound -- Subscribe to our newsletter: bit.ly/HoS_Newsletter Subscribe on YouTube: bit.ly/HoSYoutubeSubscribe All latest links: https://linktr.ee/home_of_sound HoS X Adam Heaton: guest interview + playlist: https://www.adam-heaton.co.uk/playlists/home-of-sound
Irakli is a Georgian-born, Berlin based DJ & producer, who also runs his own imprint Intergalactic Research Institute for Sound and the event series and label STAUB. He has been around the block for over ten years, juggling between events, releases and sets played internationally. And he openly shares how much he believes in the importance of creating something unique and special. Irakli studied architecture and has always been attracted to art. Eventually moving to Germany - Cologne first and then Berlin, he found a supportive and stimulating environment in the German capital. Through his platform STAUB, he shaped a musical and artistic direction that is centered around the artist's sounds. In fact, both STAUB’s parties and releases are presented without mentioning the artists’ names, in order for people to listen and discover with an open mind. In our conversation, we track back his inspiration and love for music and explore some of his current projects - such as re-releasing a vocal ambient track by Chikiss alongside a remix by Stanislav Tolkachev. As he outlines how he chooses music he likes and shapes ideas into finished products, what strikes us in this conversation is Irakli’s outlook on life: he is calm, focused and propositive. Manchester based DJ and promoters Blasha & Allatt join us for a chat about the music industry and their background promoting and playing a growing number of parties in the UK and internationally. The duo, who has been developing a strong bond in working together for years, share their passion for music and experience about the natural ups and downs of the creator’s journey. Blasha & Allatt were first introduced to each other by a common friend. They almost instantly enjoyed playing records together and started DJing back-to-back. Eventually with an extended group of friends, they started Meat Free, a well respected regular event in Manchester, that allowed them to host artists such as Ben Sims, Haai, Surgeon, Hector Oaks, Nur Jaber, Sunil Sharpe, Claire Morgan, Manni Dee, Dr Rubinstein… and many more. In this chat, we talk about their love for records and music, their history and the learnings from working with other people; and also how they played Boiler Room, preparing for gigs and the challenges of working as a duo. We discuss life experiences (including breaking Ben Sim’s tooth) and the ups and downs that creators - at least most of them - are likely to face. We look at how the scene is bound to evolve due to the current world crisis and the possibility to have more space for the grassroots of the scene: the local artists. Theo started back in 2011, the early days of Instagram, by reviewing, or even better said, embodying tracks that he made or his friends sent to him. Over the years, he turned it into an almost-daily ritual: he listens to each and every track he receives and picks up the music that resonates the most to share it with his growing online community. Fast forward to today, Theo still showcases his burning passion for music, not only with his infamous track reviews, that are now praised by many producers and labels, but also with his own production, vocals and records. In this chat, we uncover more of what makes Theo unique: his passion for space, his dedication, his label Alien Sound Trax and his aspirations with music and fashion. He also articulates one of his guiding principles: people will always judge anyways, so why not striving to be your real self and seeking your own happiness in who you are? -- Theo Nasa -- IG: https://www.instagram.com/theo__nasa SC: https://soundcloud.com/theo-nasa Podcast for Radio Slave: https://soundcloud.com/theo-nasa/theo-nasa-rinse-fm-guest-mix-radio-slaves-show-9420 Alien Sound Trax IG: https://www.instagram.com/aliensoundtrax/ Alien Sound Trax SC: https://soundcloud.com/aliensoundtrax Send promos to Theo: theo.nasa@live.co.uk Theo fashion archive: https://www.instagram.com/theosarchive/ Up and coming artists that Theo mentions: Lulu https://www.instagram.com/lulu.techno and Juan Torruella https://www.instagram.com/joan_torruella -- Home Of Sound -- Subscribe to our newsletter: bit.ly/HoS_Newsletter Subscribe on YouTube: bit.ly/HoSYoutubeSubscribe All latest links: https://linktr.ee/home_of_sound HoS X Adam Heaton: guest interview + playlist: https://www.adam-heaton.co.uk/playlists/home-of-sound
We welcome Martinovna, an esteemed VJ, who has shared the stage with the likes of Kanding Ray, Ancient Methods and Keith Carnal. She is also one of the leading visual artists for festivals such as Revive and lately Escape From Reality (the virtual festival by RAW agency). In our chat, she tells us the reason why as artists, we may not want to compromise to avoid diluting our creation. Martinovna is super passionate about techno and electronic music in general and has started VJing after being inspired by what she saw in gigs. Year by year, show after show, she has crafted her own style to make visual performances that help shape the vibe in clubs and festivals. As you will discover, it does not take much to start VJing, but what makes each artist's creation unique is the work that is put toward each performance and the experience that the artist accumulates over the years. Martinovna shoots herself a lot of the content that ends up in her visuals and often ends up investing days for each performance. In our conversation, we talk a lot about her influences such as Bjork, her ambitions, and how chaos can actually be part of the creative process. We also learn about one of Martinovna’s acquired skills - patience. -- Martinovna Vimeo https://vimeo.com/martinovna IG: www.instagram.com/martinovna_visuals RAW agency: www.instagram.com/rawppl Artists shoutout: VSK (www.instagram.com/vsk_series), Kwartz (www.instagram.com/kwartz_) Festivals mentioned: Valencia Volumens (www.instagram.com/volumensfest), Visual performers mentioned: Rybskie Tauron ( www.instagram.com/rybskie), Deruba ( www.instagram.com/deruba ) Softwares for Vjing mentioned -> Resolume Arena, Modul8 Movie mentioned about Bjork - “Dancer In The Dark” by Lars von Trier -- Home Of Sound Subscribe to our newsletter: bit.ly/HoS_Newsletter Subscribe on YouTube: bit.ly/HoSYoutubeSubscribe All latest links: https://linktr.ee/home_of_sound HoS X Adam Heaton: guest interview + playlist: https://www.adam-heaton.co.uk/playlists/home-of-sound
Manni Dee is a producer and DJ and is regularly featured on Perc Trax’s releases and shows. His music can be described as harsh and broken techno and his sets are widely appreciated by artists and fans worldwide. Since his first EP released back in 2011, Manni has been developing his own signature sound that has brought him to perform in events all over the world. He landed on labels such as Candela Rising, Earwiggle, Osiris, S.L.A.M., Tresor (where he released his first album in 2018), Leyla Records and of course, Perc Trax, where he developed a very good connection with founder Perc himself. In this podcast, we take a look at Manni’s inspiration and origins and his experiences with gigs and internet trolls. Going back to his school days and first experiences with music, we talk about Keith , the sound engineer who has been among the first people to support young Manni. We touch on subjects such as appreciating more of what we have, finding a healthy life balance and not rushing to send out music for demos. And we discover one of Manni’s tools to avoid being overwhelmed and to boost creativity: imposing limitations. Sunil Sharpe is a well-known figure in the dance music scene, with hundreds of gigs from the early 2000s and all over the world under his belt. In addition to his relentless work to support techno, Sunil has been supporting the nightlife of his country Ireland with the campaign Give Us The Night that aims to promote culture and nightlife by discussing the need for night licenses and venues with the government. What makes Sunil an icon for many is not only his unique style - vinyl-only, fast-paced and using the pitch control exclusively to change tempos -, but also his relentless work in improving his skills, his loyalty to the grassroots of the scene and the contribution to the latter. In the last decade, Sunil has also been doing interviews with other DJs, running his label Earwiggle and teaching djing to young talents in Dublin. In this chat - which is more extensive than usual - we take the time to discover Sunil’s origins, his inspiration and his path. The conversation and his experience remind us that we should not expect everything to happen overnight and how djing is comparable to... martial arts: there is no such thing as perfection and there is always room for improvement. --- Sunil Sharpe https://soundcloud.com/sunilsharpe https://open.spotify.com/artist/3ICTnwDblBaSha7SS6wgCN https://www.instagram.com/sunilsharpe https://www.facebook.com/sunilsharpemusic . Matt, in art Killawatt, is a longstanding producer and DJ, who has an eclectic portfolio of releases and music. He started getting into old school breaks several years before eventually embracing techno as well, landing on a signature style that makes his music unique. Killawatt approaches music-making with an open mind in order to keep creativity as a priority. His consistent release schedule has seen him appearing on labels such as Osiris and 47 quite often and he will soon release on his own imprint as well. In this chat, we get into his musical roots from the old school parties he used to go to, his take on life and keeping a balance with other jobs outside of music. We also talk about how living away from big cities allows you to look at things differently. We also get a glimpse of his future plans to take up an engineering degree, because he feels the need to contribute to society in more ways than only through his music. As a prolific and well-appreciated producer of a niche genre, Matt also reminds us that without getting your music out there, there is no way people can hear (let alone like) what we create. -- Killawatt Links https://open.spotify.com/artist/0WaR9ydw7sZikp1dfHV8Xc https://soundcloud.com/killawatt_uk https://www.instagram.com/killawatt_ https://www.facebook.com/KillawattMusic/ . What’s behind playing gigs around the world, being the booker for an important club, running a record label with a pretty packed release schedule and international roster of artists? For Dave and Paul it’s about hard work, discipline and faith that things will happen. Dave and Paul, in art Abstract Division, have been involved in music for more than a decade over multiple fronts: they DJ, produce, run a record label and their own party. In this chat we talk about what is going on in the scene at the moment due to coronavirus, how social media play a role in music and also how running your own label allows you to focus on the music that you like. How do we discover music? If it wasn’t for compilations, playlists and passionate music diggers such as Adam Heaton, it would be much harder to find new stuff. In this podcast with Adam, an independent Spotify curator taking care of over 100 playlists of different and specific styles, we also talk about the importance of treating people behind a computer as people (and not robots) and saying thanks more.
