Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson has had a monumental impact on the last decade of dance music, first by disrupting a male-dominated industry through the agency Discwoman, and then by creating a new, dedicated zone for Black artists with Dweller, an annual festival that takes place across various venues in New York each February. And all without ever lowering herself to the status of a DJ.With the peak of Discwoman press hype now a distant pre-pandemic memory, we thought it'd be a perfect time for a No Tags interview with Frankie. We're not really in this game to speak to amoebic newcomers about their career hopes – you'll find plenty of that in what remains of the music press. Instead we wanted to talk to Frankie as a seasoned veteran of rave, and as someone who's both seen and enacted immense change in the scene, even helping overturn NYC's racist "cabaret law".Ahead of next week's Dweller festival, we talked to Frankie about the need for Dweller and the unique family atmosphere at their parties, as well as the underground films the platform has curated for a season on The Criterion Channel. We also discuss why Dweller recently cancelled a showcase of Black artists at Berghain, the state of NYC nightlife, and how raving brought a shy, scared teenager out of her shell.Plus: her favourite films about white men in crisis. Enjoy! Thanks for listening to No Tags. If you like what we do, consider following us on Substack and social media (we're @notagspodcast everywhere) or rating and reviewing No Tags on your podcast app. Get full access to No Tags at notagspodcast.substack.com/subscribe

CCL (@ccl-url) has many tricks and plenty of surprises up their sleeve. London-born, US-bred but now Berlin-based, they are playful in what they play but serious about how they play it, whether that's head spinning 160bpm cut, "cowgirl-breaks or wiggle steppers." The key for this multidisciplinary artist and former New Forms festival curator is to find the similarities and differences between shades of sound and rhythm and exploit them to spellbinding effect. As a producer, they are no different and have always managed to find fresh in-between sounds on labels like Fever AM and Discwoman. The singular DJ steps up this week with almost two hours of pure sonic adventure. It's a perfect showcase of how they can soundtrack imaginary worlds from humid future jungles to robot dances in the sky. You'll hear rhythms you could never imagine and contort your body in impossible ways, all while admiring the dexterity of the DJ who has threaded together such a trippy trip.
Since the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd, there have been renewed efforts to shine a light on dance music's roots in Black communities. Still, there's a critical need for more Black-forefronted collectives and programmers—as well as more thoughtfully curated and balanced rosters of talent in clubs and festivals—to keep the origins of electronic music alive. In comes Brooklyn's dweller festival, founded in 2019 by Discwoman's Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, which aims to highlight exclusively Black talent from across the globe. This year's edition featured a live RA Exchange with Nigerian-British selector OK Williams, who spoke to RA music critic Kiana Mickles about some of the deep-rooted inequities that continue to bar Black artists from contributing to the contemporary dance music landscape. They also discuss Williams' ascent on the global stage—beginning from her Early Bird residency at NTS and full-fledged touring career post-pandemic—and her first forays into production. This is a lively discussion that includes questions from the audience. Listen to the episode in full.

Forward-thinking techno played by a master of the CDJs.
As social distancing measures were being lifted in New York following 15 months of closure, we were lucky enough to get together with Dweller for an extra special Juneteenth and re-opening celebration. Our next live recording comes from that weekend courtesy of Discwoman party-starting professional, SHYBOI. Across an epic two hours she burned through turbocharged techno, kaleidoscopic breakbeat and raw, freaky, rave euphoria. Massive shouts to SHYBOI for the music, to Frankie for pulling the strings, to Lou for the technical treatment and to everyone who was in the place for this one.

Raised in small town Indiana on a musical diet of 80s synth pop and punk rock, Noncompliant soon found barnyard raves and warehouse techno parties and (as DJ Shiva) quickly became a fixture of the fabled 90s Midwest USA rave scene. Two decades and a name change later, she is at the top of her techno game. Mixmag named her one of 2017’s Top 20 Breakthrough DJs. She owned a packed and sweaty Boiler Room during Movement Detroit, turned in mindblowing mixes for Slam Radio, Discwoman, and Resident Advisor, and quaked some of the world’s most respected dance floors like Smartbar Chicago, Amsterdam’s DeSchool, Concrete in Paris, and Berlin's legendary Berghain. Her festival appearances include Unsound, Red Bull Music Festival Paris, Movement Detroit, and Whole United Queer Festival. As a producer, her releases and remixes on labels like Valence, Argot, Flash, and Dark Entries have pounded sound systems worldwide, with her tune “Women’s Work” landing on Fiedel’s official Berghain 08 mix and on his label Fiedeltwo. At her core, she is a die-hard techno fan with a deep love for music and a drive to continue honing her craft as a DJ and producer in order to share her favorite music with people on dance floors everywhere. Olivia & Melissa talk to Frankie Hutchinson of Discwoman, one of the co-founders of a talent agency for electronic music. They also talk about how much they loved Carmen Maria Machado's new book, Melissa's obsession with a Greek Myth, & how Olivia got slammed by a surfboard.
Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson is a New York by way of UK electronic music promoter and grassroots organizer. She is one third of Discwoman, a collective, booking agency, and event platform representing and showcasing female talent in the electronic music community, who have pushed the needle on gender representation in techno. Frankie was also an active member of the Dance Liberation Network, a group of New York nightlife advocates who helped push the city of New York to repeal the Cabaret Law. The Cabaret Law was a century-old law, enacted with a racist intent, which was weaponized against nightclubs that catered to minority communities. We talked with Frankie at host Reed Dunlea's home in Brooklyn, and spoke about growing up in England, learning about race in America, the origins of Discwoman, the New York club scene, and what it feels like to effect change. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/protest-and-survive/support
We're not fooling around in the month of April on Techno Delivery Systems Radio! We're excited and humbled to have TechnoFist founder, Damon Bradley, on the show this month! I had the pleasure of meeting Damon face-to-face in Berlin at Tresor.Berlin (OFFICIAL) a couple of weeks ago, and am very excited to hear what he's going to bring to our ears. Featured Set - 12am Damon Bradley TechnoFist Damon Bradley is a veteran electronic music enthusiast, a house-head since 1989, techno/trance head since 1993, and DJing since 2005. Originally from Philly, Damon is the creator of TechnoFist and is one of the co-creators of SEQUENCE in Washington DC. Damon Bradley, a resident of central Maryland, USA, was born and raised in South Philadelphia. It was here that he was first exposed to the beginnings of house music on Saturday nights on the legendary 105.3 FM WDAS R&B and classic soul radio station back in 1989. A few years later, while searching for new sounds, he stumbled on ambient, techno, and trance nearly simultaneously during the summer of 1993, on Drexel University's WKDU 91.7 FM. During these formative years, Damon instantly fell in love with the sounds of Josh Wink, Sven Vaeth, Oliver Lieb, The Orb, Joey Beltram, Steve Roach, Aphex Twin, and just about anything released on the Harthouse, Strictly Rhythm, and R&S music labels. Damon only started DJ'ing around 2005, playing progressive house for a few parties and UMBC's student radio station while in graduate school. He returned to his techno roots in 2010 and started DJ'ing techno in 2015 in Washington DC. Damon's musical influences span a very broad spectrum from ambient to industrial techno, groovy and soulful house, and melodic progressive trance. Currently, he's focused on exposing the boundaries of techno to as many people as possible, and he does this using the TechnoFist group and TechnoFist podcast he created in 2013 and 2015, respectively. He curates both new and classic techno on TechnoFist which now has over 2,200 members, mostly from New York, Washington DC, and various European cities. Damon has played in numerous places in Washington DC, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia including Jimmy Valentines, and Dr. Clocks Nowhere Bar for the Degenerate, Void Archive, and Phonic parties in DC, EXILE Brooklyn, Flash DC, Tilt, and Aphotic in Brooklyn. He's also played at Generator in Amsterdam in 2017. Damon has played at all ends of the running order, opening for the likes of Shifted, Ben Damage, Exos, and Phase, and closing for juggernauts such as Perc, Tommy Four Seven, Headless Horseman, Stranger, Milton Bradley, and The Gods Planet. In 2016, Damon teamed up with Ron Jackson, Jacob Knibb, Associate and Juana to form SEQUENCE, an ambitious underground techno event series that aims to push the Washington DC techno scene as far as possible. SEQUENCE has been throwing parties since August 2016, and has feature strong local talent alongside heavyweights such as Headless Horseman, UVB, Discwoman, Milton Bradley, BMG, and Tommy Four Seven. Izzy Barreiro is an accomplished DJ, producer, composer, synthesist and teacher. They perform as @stud1nt and are part of the deeply necessary collectives Discwoman and KUNQ. They have taught classes everywhere from Moogfest to Ableton Loop. They are also the director of production at Whimsical Raps, a Brooklyn-based musical instrument company. It's allergy season, but this time spring comes with a new compilation by Allergy Season the label, and the Discwoman collective. Yes, we've been blessed with Physically Sick 2, a 44-track follow up to last year's Physically Sick comp. I play a bunch of tracks from PS2, as well as a few other new ones that fit the vibe. If you like the tunes, definitely go cop the compilation over at: http://physicallysick2.bandcamp.com . it's pay-what-you-want but all proceeds go to the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, an organization that bails people out of jail that are victims of discrimination in policing. kick them a few bucks!

Underrepresentation of women in music is nothing new. Female:Pressure released a report in 2013 that revealed that the average female representation at major music festivals was a dismal 8.4 per cent. However, some booking agencies and collectives are spearheading an effort to rebalance line-ups across the world. This episode of the Ninja Tune podcast finds Emma Burgess-Olson AKA Discwoman & Technicolour Record's UMFANG in conversation with Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, co-founder of Discwoman, a booking agency that exclusively represents cis women, trans women, and genderqueer artists. Together with their roster, their agency is helping to increase inclusivity in dance music whilst putting on exciting & diverse club nights that have seen their profile grow exponentially across the industry. We caught up with them before their September show at Corsica Studios, London.
Since 1926, a law has been on the books in New York City that prohibits three or more people from dancing in any bar or venue that doesn't posess a notoriously hard-to-obtain “Cabaret License.” In recent months however, people from the city's nightlife community have been taken steps to change that. North Brooklyn City councilman Rafael Espinal has introduced a bill that will repeal the law.On this week's episode of the THUMP podcast, host Emilie Friedlander and Associate Editor Ezra Marcus are joined by a few of the figures at the forefront of repeal effort—including Councilman Espinal, as well as the figures from Dance Liberation Network, a group of activists and nightlife figures who've banded together under the slogan “Let NYC Dance.” Discwoman's Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, Bossa Nova Civic Club owner John Barclay, and Rachel Nelson—owner of three Brooklyn bars and venues, including Secret Project Robot— stop by to discuss the prejudicial history of the law and how it affects New York City businesses. Umfang aka Emma Olson is one of the most influential figures in today’s techno scene. As co-founder of the Discwoman collective the American is doing essential work promoting female DJs. Of course, her own productions and DJ sets also further the cause as they lead by example and mix raw tension with experimental eeriness. So far coming on labels like 1080p and Allergy Season, videogamemusic, and Phinery, Emma has also played seven hour sets at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh and holds a monthly residency at Technofeminism at Bossa Nova Civic Club. Next to that, the youngster just dropped her new, promising album Symbolic Use Of Light on Technicolour. Clocking in at just over an hour, Umfang’s mix for us is filled with eerie and unusual rhythms that are often hugely roomy but underpinned by solid kicks. As the pressure builds, so does the tension, and by the mid point that boils over into raw and visceral drum tracks before falling apart into a flurry of distorted sounds, percussive hits and frazzled synths. Uncompromising and packing a lot in during a short space of time, it’s an eye opening mix that leaves you in a blissful place after a busy workout.

Hey, Cool Job! Episode 11: Founder of Discwoman, Frankie Hutchinson by Mary H.K. Choi
»The events in Orlando combined with some personal situations that I have been grappling with have all gone in to make a very intense, sometimes eclectic and even violent mix that expresses a lot of the frustrations myself and people around the world are grappling with.« [Volvox, June 2016] Last autumn we came across the »Live at LeBain« recording by Brooklyn based DJ Volvox (@volvox). The energy of her jackin’ powerful acid flavored house and techno sound caught us straight away so we asked her for a contribution to our mixtape series. The past months were packed with highlights for the Discwoman (@discwoman) member: Brazil tour, Mexico tour, podcast for RBMA (@redbullmusicacademy)incl. a great interview/portrait you should read, debut appearance on Boiler Room (@platform) - quite an impressive chain of events. She also left notable marks in New York City as co-host of the monthly JACK DEPT. (@jackdeptnyc) parties at Bossa Nova Civic Club (@bossanovacivicclub) and resident DJ at UNTER, NYC’s »best after-hours party« (Grub Street Magazine). In July/August we finally get a chance to see her live in the DJ booth as she heads over to Berlin and tours the EU. _ info _ WEB _ http://djvolvox.com FB _ https://facebook.com/Volvox-105641190919/ Discwoman _ http://discwoman.com JACK DEPT.
