We're sharing this episode a little early so it's still timely as relates to the threats faced by the Rojava revolution in north and east Syria. First up, we'll hear some updates and assessments from Garzan, a member of Tekoşîna Anarşîst, an internationalist anarchist structure based in Rojava and aligned with the Syrian Defense Forces. Garzan's voice has been re-recorded for anonymity and a transcript of their audio is available in the show notes. Transcript Then, we hear from Jînda a western activist engaged in solidarity with the Rojava Revolution to speak about what the spread of Syrian transitional government and the Turkish-backed so-called Syrian National Army militia into areas formerly under control of the Syrian Defense Forces means for women and different ethnic and religious minorities. This week, we spoke with Donna Mae, a longtime resident of Minneapolis and registered nurse working mostly with people who are unsheltered and use injection drugs. Donna lives in a neighborhood of the city that has had very heavy ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and CBP (Customs and Border Patrol) activity and speaks for the hour about the last two months of invasion, organizing with neighbors, the legacy of the George Floyd Uprising and the aftermath of the murders of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, the recent General Strike and lessons for preparing in the next incursion, wherever that may be. Syria is entering a new and terrifying phase. In this episode Breht is joined by a panel of scholars and activists (Angie Bittar, Adam, Joma, Nur and Jalyssa) to take a clear-eyed look at what's unfolded over the last year and how it fits into the longer arc of the Syrian civil war, including the rapid collapse of the Assad-era order and the emergence of a new regime centered around HTS and Ahmad al-Sharaa (Jolani). Together, they break down the latest waves of mass violence and displacement across the coast, Suwayda, Aleppo, and Rojava, and ask what these events reveal about the new Syria. From there, they turn to the Kurdish question. They discuss the SDF, the long history of US imperial instrumentalization of Kurdish forces, the recurring pattern of abandonment, and the growing pressure now facing Rojava amid shifting regional and international priorities. They also examine ongoing kidnappings and sect-based killings, the breakdown of accountability, and what the allegations surrounding Syrian security institutions tell us about the direction of the new order. Finally, they zoom out to the information war. They map the propaganda narratives being pushed in Western and Zionist media, and offer practical "tells" for separating genuine reporting from information operations. Then, they close by asking what Syria teaches us about the current political moment: imperial strategy, proxy warfare, sectarian fragmentation, and what real solidarity demands.
Hosted on Acast.

Yarı askerî rejimde telaş: Hakan Fidan'ı Vaşington'a uçuran Devlet Bahçeli'yi meclise koşturan neydi?İşte süreç bu minvalde ilerlerken Hakan Fidan Vaşington'a uçtu.

Our miniseries Not Now, But Soon challenges the stories we often tell about disasters and explores how we can use speculative fiction to create better futures and policies. On our final episode of this season, host Malka Older examines the role art and fiction play in understanding war. She talks with art and culture historian Brigitte van der Sande, who has spent 25 years studying how war is represented in art—research that brought her to many active conflict zones. Van der Sande discusses how art humanizes the victims of war and spurs action, and how humor and imagination can be forces for resistance. Resources: “Inside Hell We Build Paradise.” Read more about van der Sande's visit to Rojava, Syria, as part of efforts to build democracy in the region. Check out Other Futures, a multidisciplinary festival that presents speculative visions of the future, founded by van der Sande in 2018. See artwork mentioned in this episode: “The Eyes of Gutete Emerita” and “Soft Target.”Learn more about van der Sande's latest project, Culture House FKA the Cannibals. This podcast is part of the Future Tense Fiction project, a speculative fiction series that uses imagination to explore how science and technology will shape our future. Read the short stories from the series published by Issues in Science and Technology.

Baran Sogut, a Sydney-based Kurdish community activist, was part of a delegation from Australia which, in September, visited the Democratic Autonoumous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), the third of Syria liberated by Kurdish freedom fighters from the Bashar al-Assad dictatorship in the Rojava revolution of 2012 and over the following years from the brutal and reactionary Islamic State of Syria (ISIS). The delegation included Greens Senator David Shoebridge, the first Australian parliamentarian to visit NE Syria, as well as Kurdish Greens Inner West councillor Ismet Tashtan. Sogut spoke to Green Left's Peter Boyle about the gains and challenges of the Rojava revolution and in particular about his visit to Kobane, the city that was liberated from a siege by several Islamic fundamentalist militias in 2014–15. The Battle of Kobane was the turning point in an heroic struggle to defeat ISIS. We acknowledge that this video was produced on stolen Aboriginal land. Greens senator David Shoebridge speaks to Peter Boyle about his trip to the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria ("Rojava") - the first Australian politician to visit. They speak about the situation on the ground, the impact of the fall of the Assad dictatorship in Syria, threats from Israel and Türkiye, and the situation of Australian women and children who previously had alleged association with ISIS and are currently detained in Syria.

We are back on the Tiger Bloc Podcast! This episode, we've got returning guest “Charlie,” with us to talk about Belarusian foreign fighters in Ukraine fighting against Russia. You may remember Charlie from our podcast with Ukrainian mutual aid group Solidarity Collectives. An underreported aspect of the war in Ukraine is the participation of Belarusian political dissidents fighting on the Ukrainian side. Charlie is Belarusian, and with John Chinaman, she discusses the recent history of the authoritarian Lukashenko regime and the people who fled. After Russia invaded Ukraine (again) in 2022, Charlie explains why people like her fight, how they're organized, and her experiences as a combat medic. It was a privilege to be able to talk to her about her work and the people who have their lives fighting against fascism. John and Charlie also talk about Marsy, a comrade to Charlie and so many other antifascists in Ukraine. A veteran of the revolution in Rojava, Marsy was killed fighting near Avdiivka on November 11, 2023. To support Charlie, donate for our friends with Solidarity Collectives, @solidaritycollectives on Instagram For more of Charlie and Marsy, check out this interview from SolCol: https://youtu.be/2Sdc6BY-ZB4Another great interview with Charlie: https://youtu.be/qViY9VJZsagMusic credit:Palm Tree Jam by Ronin SaediListen to more: https://viennaundergroundtraxx.bandcamp.com/album/cosmic-conscious https://open.spotify.com/artist/1BxaGq5S5A6Bck2DquttJM

Episode Notes This week on Live Like the World is Dying, we have part two of a crossover episode with the Strangers in a Tangled Wilderness podcast, with our monthly feature zine Martyr Culture by Sara Blum., which is an essay about martyr culture within the Kurdish Freedom Movement. In the last episode we had an audio version of the zine as well as an interview with Sara about the piece and her time with the YPJ. Today's episode continues the interview. If you'd like to read the piece then check out our monthly features . You can also get a physical copy of our future monthly feature zines by signing up for our Patreon . Our June feature was generously provided by Sara Blum, an internationalist who spent several years with the YPJ in Rojava, to accompany and contextualize our newest book, Orso: Wartime Journals of an Anarchist, which is currently available for preorder as of right now at tangledwilderness.org, and will be regularly available/ship out in early-mid July. Orso contains the first-person narrative of Lorenzo Orso Orsetti–also known as Heval (he-vawl) Tekoser (teko-cher) Piling (pih-ling), now Sehid (sheh-heath) Tekoser (teko-cher) or “martyr Tekoser–an internationalist soldier in Rojava. This journal was published in its original Italian following Oro's death. We're excited to bring you the first English edition, which includes additional essays that share the historical and cultural context in which Orso lived, fought, and died. We're excited to bring his message to a new audience. The struggle against Daesh for an autonomous, liberated region in Rojava is bigger than one person, but one person's life can offer us a glimpse of a vast project and how one life can fit into it. Sara's essay helps build a backdrop for the world Orso gives us a glimpse of in his journals. This is part one of this episode, as the interview with Sara ended up being quite long. Tune in in 2 weeks for the second half of the interview, as next week is This Month in the Apocalypse on Live Like the World is Dying. We won't get to it until the second half of the interview, but the word of the month this month is about those who are mindful. Episode Notes This time on Strangers in a Tangled Wilderness, we have part two of a crossover episode with the Strangers in a Tangled Wilderness podcast, with our monthly feature zine Martyr Culture by Sara Blum., which is an essay about martyr culture within the Kurdish Freedom Movement. In the last episode we had an audio version of the zine as well as an interview with Sara about the piece and her time with the YPJ. Today's episode continues the interview. If you'd like to read the piece then check out our monthly features. Bestselling author Alina Adams returned to The Locher Room to talk about her brand-new historical novel, Go On Pretending—a powerful multigenerational saga spanning the golden age of 1950s television, the fall of the USSR, and the rise of the Women's Revolution in Rojava, Syria.Soap fans will love the story's deep connection to Guiding Light, as it follows Rose Janowitz, a trailblazing woman navigating the early days of TV soap operas while hiding a taboo romance with Jonas Cain, the African-American star who made Guiding Light a radio sensation. As Rose tries to protect both their secrets and their future, her choices ripple through the lives of her daughter and granddaughter in unexpected, life-altering ways.Known for her bestselling soap-inspired novels like Oakdale Confidential, Jonathan's Story, and Soap Opera 451: A Time Capsule of Daytime Drama's Greatest Moments, Alina brings her lifelong passion for the genre—and her own background as a Soviet immigrant who learned English through soap operas—to this deeply human, emotionally rich story about love, legacy, and liberation.Don't miss this special conversation with one of the most original voices in historical fiction and pick-up Go On Pretending where all books are sold.
In a world that rewards urgency, overwork, and perfectionism, what does it look like to return to ourselves—not through punishment, but through presence? This week, I share a personal story of falling out of alignment with my commitments—not from malice, but from fear, fatigue, and scarcity. I reflect on what it took to course-correct, to soften instead of self-judge, and to rebuild a rhythm rooted in integrity, self-trust, and care.I also explore examples from around the globe—stories of individuals and communities who are embodying integrity in the face of oppression, not through performance, but by building relationships, refusing silence, and staying aligned with their values even when the cost is high.Featured Stories in This Episode:Afro-German communities building self-sustaining infrastructure instead of relying on state validation.Saudi feminist scholar Hatoon al-Fassi, who risked imprisonment to hold truth to power through ancestral knowledge.Kurdish women in Rojava, co-creating democratic, feminist societies rooted in daily reflection and radical interdependence.Chicago's Black Youth Project 100, resisting performative allyship and investing in mutual aid rooted in “We take care of us.”Crown Heights Mutual Aid created multilingual hotlines, raised funds, distributed rent relief, and built lasting infrastructure. Each of these stories asks: What does it mean to stay rooted in your values when the pressure is to conform, perform, or disappear?Reflection Prompts: These are invitations to sit with, not solve. You don't need to write your way through them. You might take them on a walk. Move with them in your body. Breathe with them in silence. Let them live in you, in whatever way you need this week.Where in my life do I feel out of alignment with my commitments—not out of malice, but out of fear, fatigue, or uncertainty? What would it feel like, in my body, to return to integrity—not as a performance, but as a practice of self-trust?How can I hold myself with tenderness and accountability at the same time, the way a gardener both prunes and protects?https://www.transmutingwhitesupremacyandpatriarchy.com/ → Subscribe to the newsletter for weekly reflections like these → Learn more about the Cultivating Intersectional Leadership course → Follow along on Instagram and LinkedIn for more practices, invitations, and community conversationsLet's Stay in Practice—Together: This work isn't meant to be done alone. On the 8th December 2024, the Assad regime in Syria fell, replaced by a group of former jihadists called Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham. This podcast is a recording of a December 13, 2024 live reading and Q&A session conducted by our friend James Stout. James is one of the foremost investigative journalists working today in the foreign policy arena, reporting on things like the civil war in Myanmar against the military junta, and on migration through the Darien Gap. In this presentation, James reads a chapter from his forthcoming book Against the State and takes questions about Rojava, revolution, and antifascism. Also during this event, James and Yellow Peril Tactical were able to raise almost $650 for the Kurdish Red Crescent (Heyva Sor a Kurd) and Tekoşîna Anarşîst, anarchist internationalists currently fighting in AANES against Turkish-funded forces. We look forward to sharing more ways to support the struggle in Rojava on YPT this year!Listen to James Stout on the It Could Happen Here Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/it-could-happen-here/id1449762156 Follow James on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jamesstout.bsky.socialFollow James on Twitter: https://x.com/jamesstoutFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yellow_peril_tactical Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/yptactual Follow us on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/yptactual.bsky.social Support our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/yellow_peril_tactical
On Syria, the fall of Assad, and nationalism in the Middle-East. [Patreon Exclusive] Historian Djene Bajalan talks to Alex about a major rearrangement in the Levant. We discuss: Who are Syria's new rulers HTS, and what is their vision – if any? Did geopolitics really determine the fall of Assad and the Ba'ath Party? How HTS's victory is so profoundly different from Islamism in Iran 1979 Why 2025 finally closes the book on the Arab Spring – and on secular Arab nationalism Were the Kurds wrong to rely on US protection? And in the full episode we continue by discussing... Is Turkey the big winner of the decade? What the Left gets wrong on nationalism Civic versus ethnic nationalism, revisited What was democratic, liberal and revolutionary about nationalism – and whether it can be again How conservatives recuperate left-wing ideas, which were always conservative from the start Links: Djene's writing at Jacobin /95/ The Fall of Rojava? ft.
