“Film-maker and previous award-winner Erika Lust hosted a talk and Q&A event at the awards, as she also had several films nominated this year. Lust sees her work in opposition to that of the mainstream, and wants to offer other ways of filming sex. Too often the films offer a weak setting and storyline before focussing on the sex, and one kind of sex at that. “Mainstream porn lacks creativity and a narrative. They only care about sets of genitals banging together as the woman enjoys fake pleasure until they get their money shot. The man enjoying his orgasm with no thought to the woman's pleasure at all. The performers are cloned stereotypes, everybody abiding to the same standards. Body hair is seen as something undesirable, or God forbid if you're not thin or muscular like an Action Man. There are no interesting stories, relatable character or good sex. It's bad sex that's given porn a bad name.” Lust playfully stated in her TEDx Talk in Vienna that “I'm not trying to get women out of porn, I'm trying to get women into porn!” As a director herself, Lust wants more women in control of production, more female directors and writers in porn can help redress the sexual balance in the industry. Lust leads by example: “I want others to continue to be inspired by the work I do, I want to encourage other women to get into leading roles within the adult film industry, as directors, producers and scriptwriter. That way we can get more of the porn we want out there and express our perspective, our desires and our pleasure.” The argument is that with more women in porn, porn becomes more equal, and more feminist naturally. By engaging women in the porn film industry, a female audience is more likely to follow. “I love working with (almost) all female team and having a real customised aspect to my filmmaking. It is key in allowing me to make exactly what I want and experiment with different themes, techniques and contexts.” Female pleasure is rarely explored within mainstream pornography, rather the women are there to be objectified or to service their male co-stars. Lust's work portrays both male and female pleasure. “I create an environment which satisfies the viewer with realistic interpretations of real fantasies. The performers look like and play characters that are like the guy or girl on the street, they are natural, individual and attractive in their own unique way. The sex is real, you can see the pleasure, the sweat, the touching and hear the sounds. The performers caress, enjoy and pleasure one another.” As for the audience, Lust does not discriminate. Her films do not specifically target a female audience, but anyone who wants to watch them. “I make my films with a feminist mind, and that means equality to all sexes,” Lust explains. “My films portray men and women as equals with consideration to everyone's pleasure, fantasies and desires.” A more realistic portrayal of sex engages an audience in a more profound and enjoyable way. The Feminist Porn Awards celebrates those taking steps to create erotica which mirrors the sex we like to have - that which acknowledges mutual pleasure. “Viewers can see themselves in my films. They feel like they could live out that scenario. That's what makes it more satisfying, erotic and fun!” "Mainstream porn lacks creativity and a narrative. They only care about sets of genitals banging together until they get their money shot - with no thought to the woman's pleasure at all" -Jenny Guerin By the way, the acting and the scripts in porn tend to be subpar. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

"Feminists have debated pornography ever since the women's movement commenced. The debate was particularly vehement during the feminist sex wars of the 1980s, which is when feminist porn originated. It acquired momentum in the 2000s because of the Feminist Porn Awards, originated by Good For Her in Toronto in 2006. These awards spread awareness amongst a broader audience, extra media exposure, and assistance in uniting a community of filmmakers, performers, and fans. Many third-wave feminists are open to seeking freedom and rights of sexual equality through entering the adult entertainment workforce. However, many second-wave feminists believe that the oppression and/or sexual objectification of women is inherent in all pornography involving them. The conflict between the two waves causes many struggles between these different feminist views of pornography. Tristan Taormino, who is a sex educator, feminist pornographer, and co-editor of The Feminist Porn Book, defines feminist pornography as dedicated to gender equality and social justice. Feminist pornography is porn that is produced in a fair manner, where performers are paid a reasonable salary and treated with care and esteem, their consent, safety, and well-being are vital, and what they bring to the production is appreciated. Feminist porn seeks to challenge ideas about desire, beauty, gratification, and power through unconventional representations, aesthetics, and film making styles. The overall aim of feminist porn is to empower the performers who produce it and the people who view it." I also look forward to doing sex scenes in television shows and movies and being an intimacy coordinator as well as a intimacy choreographer in television and movies. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

"ERIKA LUST WANTS to get more women in porn—in every possible position. Writer. Director. Producer. Star. She broke into the biz herself once and knows what it takes. And, like the growing number of advocates calling for more women behind the camera in Hollywood, she knows that the more inclusive the adult industry becomes, the better—and, OK, sexier—the results. "Here we are, in a time when feminism and gender issues are in the media more than ever, the conversation around female sexuality is happening all the time, and still, mainstream production companies keep creating the same boring stuff and are managed by the same kind of narrow-minded men," Lust says. "We need another perspective; we definitely need the female gaze." Now she's just got to prove she's right." "When in Doubt, Go Indie It is, however, what Lust is shilling—and she's not alone. Even going back to the 1980s, directors like Candida Royalle, one of the first porn stars to move into directing, were making female-focused porn and launching their own efforts to do so. By the 2000s, creators like Anna Span and alt-queer film director Courtney Trouble redoubled efforts to produce and distribute adult films by and for women. And while the Internet has exposed a lot of young people to porn, it also—much like it did for artists of all varieties—provided a distribution channel for a lot of independent producers and performers to release material that doesn't fall into cliches. (It also, like it did for other industries, caused a lot of problems.) To that end, there are now even sites like Cindy Gallop's Make Love Not Porn that allow, for lack of a better term, amateur performers to produce and distribute whatever turns them on. "The beauty of technology is that now anyone can be a pornographer," says Carlyle Jansen, founder of the adult store Good For Her, which produces the Feminist Porn Awards. "But gaining skills in directing and being able to pay performers well (rather than just featuring yourself) and rent interesting sets and pay a full camera and editing crew to make quality interesting films such as Erika's would be an extra service that many could not afford." Providing those services is, of course, exactly what Lust is trying to do with her new initiative. But she's also just one person, and porn has a lot of issues of representation that need to change. "Certainly it is fabulous to get more women making porn," Jansen says. "[But] what I feel is almost more important is to fund transwomen, people/women of color, older folks and people/women with disabilities. These are the people still either fetishized or stereotyped in porn or just left out of the picture. There are very few positive images of these folks in film, especially done by their own communities." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

At the back of a closet, in a cardboard box, writer Tina Horn’s diaries gather dust. In the box there are girlhood diaries covered in collages of unicorns, dragons and David Duchovny. There are mixtapes with fat multicolored glitter and there are simple, spiral bound notebooks filled with obscenities. This episode is part of the Diaries mini season and was written by Tina Horn. Tina is a Lambda Literary Fellow and the recipient of two Feminist Porn Awards. Check out Tina’s podcast and more.
