Coming up this Saturday on Finding Your Bliss, we have a show devoted to musical theatre and a beyond gifted composer and theatre creator, that many are comparing to Stephen Sondheim. Celebrity Interviewer and Bliss Coach Judy Librach is joined by the masterful and uber talented Andrew Seok. Andrew Seok began his career as a Musical Theatre Singer & Composer, moved onto Vocal Coach, then Singer / Songwriter, Record Producer, TV / Film Composer, Theatre Creator, and Filmmaker. After the success of his first musical, “ECHOES”, Andrew went on to produce and direct its feature film version, which screened at The Reelworld Film Festival, The Montreal World Film Festival, and Fort Meyers Film Festival. He is currently in the final stages of post production for his second musical film “What Am I Without You?”, and has written and directed the musical short film, “Because of You”, as well as the dance short film, “Everything” where the entire story is told through music and contemporary dance. In addition, Andrew created the short musical documentary, “Birth of a Song”. On top of all of this, in 2019, Andrew wrote the Toronto Fringe Festival hit, UNRAVELLED as his second live stage musical project, and followed that up with his critically acclaimed mega musical, “The Man With The Golden Heart” in 2023. Most recently, in 2024, Andrew premiered, “Rosamund – A New Musical”, a reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, with the entire run selling out in a matter of days. Each night of the 11 night run not only had a sold out crowd, but was accompanied by very exuberant and lengthy standing ovations. The show was a runaway hit! Everything Seok does is marked by a stroke of genius. He is a man of many talents; a modern-day media renaissance man! As a Juno nominated music producer, he has written and produced music for worldwide campaigns for Nike, Coca-Cola, Samsung, Visa, Dove, X-Box, The Super Bowl, BMW, Dragonball Z, as well as numerous TV series such as: “Playmakers” (ESPN), “Global Morning Show”, “Canada's Worst Driver”, numerous shows on the Discovery Channel, and “Addicted To Plastic” (Netflix). He has worked for Feist, Chantal Kreviazuk, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace), Jully Black, Jeff Healey, and Stephen Flaherty & Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Anastasia). Among his recent projects, Andrew has written a short musical film “90 Days” – a love story during Covid times, and his upcoming feature-length musical film “Where Do We Go From Here?”, which delves into the intricacies of modern relationships. Andrew is also currently the artistic director of Eclipse Theatre Company in Toronto. Our interview was fascinating, fun and a wonderful glimpse into the magnificent artistry of this great talent. Welcome back to the 192nd episode of The Cup which is our a weekly (give or take, TBD, these are unprecedented times) performing arts talk show presented by Cup of Hemlock Theatre. With the theatres on a come back we offer a mix of both reviews of live shows we've seen and continued reviews of prophet productions! For our 192nd episode we have a new artist interview. This particular conversation was hosted by our Co-Artistic Producer Ryan Borochovitz and features Toronto-based actor and multifaceted theatre artist, HRH Anand Rajaram, all about his play Crosstown – adapted from Richard Scrimger's 1996 novel of the same name – recently presented at the 2024 Toronto Fringe Festival and VideoCabaret. Join these two as they have a rigorous discussion about everything from honorifics to hauntology, epic poetry to urban poverty, and the challenges of making socially responsible provocative art. SPOILER WARNING: Though the initial run of Crosstown has come to an end, we sincerely hope that it will be revived by another theatre company sometime in the near future. If you happen to have found this episode shortly before planning to attend one such remount, be aware that this interview contains many spoilers, both for the play and the novel from which it is adapted. We begin with a general non-spoiler section until the [42:20] mark, followed by a more in-depth/anything goes/spoiler-rich discussion. For anybody who wishes to avoid spoilers, we recommend you stop watching after that point, or at least proceed at your own risk. CONTENT WARNING: This interview contains a detailed discussion about abortion – the morality, politics, and literary/theatrical representation thereof. It also includes references to infanticide, sexual assault, implied incest, alcoholism, loss of family, genocide, and colonial violence. These conversations predominantly occur during the spoiler section, if you would like to avoid such topics. Viewer/listener discretion is strongly advised. On this episode, we bring you playwright and performer, Deborah Shaw, and director and dramaturg, David Agro. Together, they are the dynamic duo behind the production of her, shedding light on how they navigated the choppy waters of the pandemic to bring their creative vision to life. From a casual chat about their first experiences in theatre to a captivating discussion about how audience feedback and critical reviews helped shape their production, this talk is a rollercoaster ride. Deborah heartwarmingly recounts her return to the stage after a long hiatus, crediting an encouraging Grade 8 teacher for sparking her public speaking confidence which eventually led her to craft her own play. On the other side, David speaks passionately about his vision for the show and how his knee-jerk reaction to the script was instrumental in shaping the final production. Finally, we pull back the curtain on the making of her, scheduled to run at the Red Sand Castle Theatre from September 6th to 10th. Discover how Deborah's personal inspirations breathed life into the script, and how David finessed his directorial magic to bring Her to the stage. Be prepared to be swept off your feet as we navigate through the meticulous and iterative process of creating a play. So take a seat, get comfortable, and prepare to be captivated by these brilliant minds of the Canadian theatre scene. It's a performance you won't want to miss! Deborah Shaw Since graduating from Theatre Humber, Deborah has been involved in many productions in Toronto as an actor, stage manager and costumier. Creating and performing in her own work has been a particular joy. She was a founding member of Carpe Dinero (commedia dell'arte), as co-director, co-writer and performer. Deborah has also been the Entertainment Director for the Pirate Festival, and she debuted the role of Susan in the world premiere of the Samuel French Inc. Canadian Play Contest winner, A Year In The Death Of Eddie Jester, by T. Gregory Argall. Always expanding her performing interests, Deborah launched into bellydancing with Arabesque Academy, where she regularly performed as one of the Arabesque Earthshakers. She was also the costumier and backstage manager for Arabesque Canada under Artistic Director Yasmina Ramzy. Deborah recently created her own unique style of dance fusion in her show Raqs Macabre, for which she is the producer, writer, choreographer, costumier and dance artist. The Fringe Festival made it possible for her.—Deborah's second completed playscript—to receive a full staging while other works and ideas have impatiently waited their turn. zippysaidproductions.com Instagram: hertheplay David Agro David and one-person plays have a history together. His professional debut performance, for Heresy 3 Productions at Brock Centre for the Arts, was as Andrei Vukhov in Judgement— the first Canadian production of Barry Collins' harrowing full-length solo drama. David continued to develop his acting and directing skills at the Shaw and Stratford Festivals, where he had the immense good fortune of learning from many of his theatre heroes. A diverse range of experiences in the Toronto area eventually led to his most recent projects— adapting, directing and performing condensed solo versions of plays which have made a lasting impression on him, including Judgement, The Dresser, Bent, Hosanna and The Elephant Man. Exploring the possibilities in solo pieces has become a consuming interest. When presented with the opportunity to make his first foray into The Toronto Fringe Festival as dramaturg and director of Deborah Shaw's original one-actor drama, David felt right at home being part of the company of two that breathed life into her. He recently presented a newly-revised version of his own one-person show, Bedrooms of the Nation. Support Stageworthy Donate: tips.pinecast.com/jar/stageworthy

Talk about an identity crisis. For his whole life, Canadian actor Noam Tomaschoff, 31, thought he was the son of a Jewish couple with roots in Israel and Montreal. Tomaschoff went to Jewish day school, speaks Hebrew and has visited Israel. But last summer, his life changed when his parents learned he was planning to take a DNA test, for fun, while on holiday at the cottage. So they sat him down to reveal a three-decade-old secret: due to fertility problems, they used an anonymous sperm donor to conceive. The donor is no longer alive. The shocking news prompted Tomaschoff to start searching for answers. He's since discovered his birth father's details, including that the man was not Jewish—and Tomaschoff now has 35 half-siblings scattered around the world. Now Tomaschoff has put the experience into a new show, called Our Little Secret: The 23 & Me Musical, debuting July 6 at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth --- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to. Ballentine was born in Toronto, Canada to parents Eva and Blake Ballentine. She is a graduate of the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto.[5] She began her acting career as a child actor on the Toronto stage production of The Railway Children, directed by Damian Cruden (2011) for Mirvish Productions.[6] She went on to appear in other stage performances, including the lead role in Numbers, at the Toronto Fringe Festival(2013),[7][8] and as Little Cosette / Young Eponine[9] in the 25th Anniversary production of Les Misérables(2013), directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell for Mirvish Productions. Also in 2013, she was invited to the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction Gala as one of the performers to read from one of the five prize-nominated titles.[10] Her first TV role came in a Hallmark Channel movie, Baby's First Christmas (2012), in which she played Karen, a primary character with Casper Van Dienin a lead role.[11] She took on her first film role in Atom Egoyan's feature, The Captive (2013), an official selection for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.[12]She went on to share the screen with Susan Sarandon, Gil Bellows and Christopher Heyerdahl, in The Calling. In her next larger TV movie role for Lifetime's Clara's Deadly Secret[13] (2013), she played Kate[13] alongside co-stars Emmanuelle Vaugier and Richard Ruccolo. In the 2015 feature film Standoff, Ballentine portrays one of the lead characters, Bird, a young girl who finds protection with an ex-soldier (played by Thomas Jane) from a hit-man (played by Laurence Fishburne). Although the movie received mixed reviews,[14] Rene S. Garcia, Jr. of Workingauthor.com wrote "And let's not forget Ella Ballentine. I typically have no faith in child actors, but Ella strikes the perfect tone with her burgeoning independence, but emotional and physical dependency." Eoin Friel from ActionElite felt that "Ella Ballentine almost steals the movie as Bird, the girl being pursued by Sade. The poor thing goes through an absolute nightmare and manages to never be the "annoying kid" in the film; she brings genuine heart to proceedings and is essential for Carter's redemption." In an interview on Collider, Jane stated "[Ella] was pretty wonderful. She was fun, too." Ballentine's next big role cast her as co-lead in writer/director Bryan Bertino's horror film, The Monster (2016) with co-stars Zoe Kazan, and Scott Speedman. The Monster became an independent success and Ella received Fangoria magazine's 2017 Fangoria Chainsaw Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. "If horror movie performances were given Oscars, [Kazan] would be a shoo-in. Same with Ballentine. These two are so believable," wrote Staci Layne Wilson in Dread Central.[18]Bloody Disgusting, an American horror genre website, called Ballentine "The Most Badass Horror Hero of 2016".[20] According to critics, in the horror movie, The Monster "the spooky-good Ella Ballentine"[21] came up as "a minor revelation." According to the Los Angeles Times' Justin Chang "Ballentine gives a fine, fierce performance as a child wise beyond her years and unafraid of confrontation",[23] and Matt Donato from We Got This Covered writes "Ballentine rolls with the punches well for an actress her age, and this shouldn't be understated". In 2016 Ballentine began her role as Anne Shirley in the three-part TV movie adaptation of the classic Canadian novel, Anne of Green Gables. L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables (2016) was the first instalment, followed by The Good Stars (2017),then Fire & Dew (2017). The other main characters were portrayed by Martin Sheen as Matthew Cuthbert and Sara Botsford as Marilla Cuthbert. Ballentine's performance again received critical success and landed her a Canadian Screen Award (2018). "Ballentine is charming as Anne," wrote Francesca Rudkin in the New Zealand Herald. Louise Keller in Urbancinefile states "[Ballentine] is outstanding. Wide-eyed and innocent, she proffers just the right amount of worldliness as the orphan who asks for just two things as she prays for the first time. That is a lovely scene." "I was absolutely delighted by actress Ella Ballentine's portrayal of Anne Shirley. She was a worthy Anne." wrote Sarah M. Miduski. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sheen says "I adore [Ella]...She's an extraordinary talent...She's remarkable. And she's very funny as well. We have great fun on the set and she's got a great sense of humor. She's a joy to work with." In 2019 Ballentine plays the lead, Jackie in Nicole Dorsey's Black Conflux (2019) with Ryan McDonald as her co-lead. Stephan Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter praised Ballentine's "luminous acting".

Not only are kids an endless source of material, but it turns out that humour can be helpful and healing in health care too. Come spend some time with this fun and lovely woman. The FBI announced on Thursday that they believe a former Gwinnett County resident and lab owner who allegedly violated his pre-trial release while facing fraud charges in New Orleans may be back in the Atlanta area, and they are asking for help to find him. Federal officials said Khalid Ahmed Satary was indicted on several charges in the New Orleans-based United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana in September 2019. He was one of 35 people indicted at that time for their involvement in a scheme where about $2.1 billion in claims were filed with Medicare for fraudulent cancer gene tests for elderly people. A warrant for Satary's arrest was issued on Nov. 23 for the pre-trial release violation. The FBI field office in Miami is leading the search for Satary, but anyone who knows where he is located can contact any FBI office, including the one in Atlanta. At the time of the 2019 indictment, federal officials called it one of the largest health care fraud schemes they have ever seen. The charges from the case were spread across five federal court districts in Louisiana, Georgia and Florida. Satary, in particular, is facing the following charges: conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud; health care fraud; conspiracy to defraud the United States and to pay and receive illegal health care kickbacks; and conspiracy to launder monetary instruments. Satary was running Clio Laboratories, which was located in the Gwinnett Progress Center on Hurricane Shoals Road, when the indictment came down. In addition to the Atlanta area, other places the FBI said Satary may have headed to include: Houston, Texas; Delray Beach, Fla.; and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Gwinnett County police are looking for a motive after a man was stabbed to death at a Norcross area extended stay in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. Fifty-year-old Duluth resident Marvin Hollie was arrested for the stabbing, which left Tyler Summerour, 28, dead. Hollie was charged with aggravated assault, malice murder and felony murder. Police said they were called to the Norcross Extended Stay, located at 2250 Pelican Way, shortly after 3:20 a.m. Wednesday. Valle said the reason for the stabbing is unknown, and homicide detectives are exploring all motives. Police are asking anyone with information to share in the case to contact Gwinnett detectives at 770-513-5300. Harbins Elementary School teacher Melissa Barth was recently named a 2023 Don Cargill STEM Scholars recipient. The award, sponsored by the Georgia Youth Science and Technology Centers, recognizes educators for their thoughtful engagement with students, and creating imaginative classroom lessons that teach and support science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Barth, one of only 23 educators from around the state and the only educator from Gwinnett County selected to receive the award said she was humbled by the recognition. The GYSTC is a private, not-for-profit educational organization. Its mission is to increase interest in and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as subjects for serious study, particularly among elementary and middle school teachers, students, and parents in typically underserved areas in Georgia. Barth says she's passionate about STEM because it engages students. It was an easy decision for the Aurora Theatre to bring “Kim Convenience” to the Lawrenceville Arts Center's Metro Waterproofing Main Stage from Jan. 19 to Feb. 19. “We loved this play because it is about a hard-working family who own a small business,” Jon Carr, the Aurora Theatre's director of marketing, said. “Many Gwinnett stories start that way. Then combine that with the universal themes in the show: The struggle of keeping your loved ones together, the balance of work and family. “Kim's Convenience,” an award-winning comedic play that evolved into a hit series on both Canadian TV and Netflix, centers on Appa Kim, played by James Yi, who runs the family business from behind the counter at Kim's Convenience in Toronto. He provides his customers with wisdom and history lessons along with their snacks. But Mr. Kim is presented with a substantial offer by big-city developers to sell them his store so they can close it, which would yield him a substantial profit but also end a business that's been in his family for years. It's up to Kim and his wife, played by Yingling Zhu, to decide if they want to take the cash or turn down the offer by convincing their adult children Janet (Caroline Donica) and Jung (Ryan Vo) to keep the store in Korean-Canadian family's name by following in their father's footsteps. “Kim's Convenience” was a huge hit at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2011, where the play by Ins Choi completed a sold-out run en route to winning the Patron's Pick Award. The show was such a big hit that it was picked by Netflix in 2020. When it comes to his profession and his country, Dacula native Will Hinton's aim is true. Hinton, 26, has a unique position in military hierarchy as a member of the elite Army Marksmanship Unit, which numbers about 15 soldiers. And with his sharp shooting, Hinton has the opportunity this summer to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Competing in bunker trap, Hinton — who in 2022 has been ranked No. 5 in the world — had an excellent year. He won the ISSF President's Cup in Men's Trap and was on the ISSF World Championship Team in Men's Skeet at a competition in Cairo, Egypt, and he took the silver medal in men's trap at the Shotgun National Championship in July in Hillsdale, Michigan. Perhaps most importantly, Hinton snagged one of two U.S. Olympic Quotas at the 2022 CAT Games in November in Lima, Peru. As a result, he'll compete for one of two spots on Team USA for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games (in Paris) at the Olympic Trails, set for May 2023 back in Hillsdale. The Olympic Games would be a fitting competition for Hinton, who grew up shooting with his father, whom he said is “a big bird hunter.” He began shooting competitively as a teenager and transitioned from team shooting to individual performances with the National Sporting Clays Association.
