On this episode we dig into non-monogamy with Tristan Taormino. She discusses how the processing of both parties feelings is a crucial element to open relationships. Interestingly, she shares how working on yourself is a big part of the open-minded approach required to make this type of thing work. The Importance of Boundaries in Consensual Non-monogamy Tristan recommends a slow start and provides clear guidelines and examples on how to do this. Knowing what you want and need makes setting boundaries easier. These boundaries include whether or not you and your partner wish to keep your non-monogamy close to home or not. This ultimately bleeds into how much time you will be investing in non-monogamy and the depth of the relationships you will be seeking. Tristan shares the types of boundaries that could come up. Decisions to make regarding non-monogamy Tristan's advice for couples with different feelings about non-monogamy is to go at the pace of the slower partner. Ultimatums are not encouraged especially if your partner agrees to give it a try. Tristan adds valuable advice about making decisions during the heat of a moment, advocating a more thought-through approach when put in these situations. People trying non-monogamy also struggle with certain behaviours including jealousy. We learn more about this and how to constructively handle this. The Common Pitfalls of Consensual Non-monogamy Time management is considered one of the pitfalls of non-monogamy. With many tools available at our disposal, Tristan unpacks the subtle and obvious scenarios that eventually lead to your time being consumed and the negative impact it can have if not managed. We hear about emotional privacy and how it involves considering the preferences of all the parties included in your non-monogamous arrangement. Tristan's suggests the ‘don't ask, don't tell ‘ method if all parties can agree to it. Vito power comes into play here and we hear about how it can be used fairly. Considering the Past Trauma and negative childhood experiences eventually manifest in our relationships. Tristan urges us to investigate these issues so that we are informed when entering a relationship and acutely aware of our partner's triggers and understand why they exist. Background Tristan Taormino is an award-winning writer, sex educator, speaker, filmmaker, and radio host. For the first time in Sex Out Loud history, Tristan covers a topic that is taboo among the BDSM/kink community: Adult Baby & Diaper Lovers. Our expert is Dr. Rhoda, a therapist in private practice and the author of the book No More Hiding: Permission to Love Your Sexual Self. Dr. Rhoda Lipscomb has been counseling and coaching individuals and couples in human sexuality for over 28 years. She is an AASECT certified sex therapist, clinical sexologist, and sexuality coach specializing in areas of alternative sexuality. She has been in private practice for over 14 years. She frequently speaks at AB/DL events such as CapCon, TeddyCon, and US Littles, has been a guest expert on multiple podcasts regarding AB/DL acceptance and educates therapists to understand and work with the AB/DL community.
Tristan realized she's interviewed not one, but TWO former contestants on the TV show The Masked Singer - so we went deep into the Sex Out Loud vault to find the shows from 2012 and 2013 and edited them together, commercial-free. Topics include: anal sex, non-monogamy, embracing your body, clitoral vs g-spot stimulation, favorite sex toys, and much more.
“You've got to set up the dynamic, which is, we can talk about absolutely anything here. I'm not going to judge you. I'm not going to shame you. I can take it.” ~Tristan Taormino Sex episode! Sexpisode? You decide. Either way, educator, author, and media-maker Tristan Taormino talks about the joys of her DIY career and what she wishes therapists knew about sex. From her first book, The Ultimate Guide To Anal Sex For Women (published waaay back in 1997) to her current podcast, Sex Out Loud, Tristan’s dedicated her life to creating shame-free, inclusive spaces where knowledge and straightforward advice flourish. She’s also a prolific maker of feminist porn and erotica and a champion of marginalized voices. She uses her various platforms to amplify the views of her LGBTQIA peers and other groups who are consistently excluded from the CIS male-dominated mainstream conversations around sex and pleasure. Tristan’s gained plenty of cognitive insight into the client-therapist relationship. She’s participated in years of dialectic behavioural therapy (DBT) to address her own childhood traumas and in continued support of her severe depression. She’s witnessed firsthand how therapists’ inherent sexual biases or avoidance tactics inhibit authentic therapeutic conversations. She urges therapists to stop waiting for clients to lead on the subject of sex. With a little grace and a lot of sex-positive education, therapists can gain competencies that support their clients’ sexuality even if they themselves don’t fully embrace every kink or intimate desire on the spectrum. *** Tristan Taormino is an award-winning sex educator, media maker, and speaker. Our sex-negative culture pushes us to repress and feel shame about our sexuality or lifestyle. Stepping out of the shadows and telling your story becomes an important act of rebellion. There are risks involved in telling your story. More than just the frowning disapproval of judgy relatives at holiday dinners, living an openly atypical life can lead to risks to employment, housing, medical care, and child custody. This is why it's doubly important that those who can live out loud do since their open existence is a powerful 'fuck you' to the status quo. Our guest today has been openly flipping off the establishment for more than 25 years since beginning the magazine 'Pucker Up' shortly after finishing college. She continues to do so as she works on a memoir telling her story from childhood through to her relationship with her father as he battled AIDS in the early years of the epidemic. On this episode of On The Wet Coast, Flick Morrison and Kat Stark are joined by Tristan Taormino to discuss her upcoming (as yet untitled) memoir and to talk about Telling Your Story as Resistance. Tristan Taormino is an award-winning author, sex educator, speaker, and media maker. She is editor of 25 anthologies and the author of eight books on sex and relationships including Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships. She is founder of The Open List, a list of professionals (therapists, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, consultants, relationship and life coaches, doctors, lawyers, etc.) who are experienced and knowledgeable about alternative sexuality and lifestyles, including open relationships, polyamory, and non-monogamy. Sex Out loud sex out loud. What do you talk about on sex out loud? You know the show evolved? It's interesting because there's so many sex podcasts right. Sometimes it feels like we're circulating all the Same guests so I think this is my. I'M GONNA go on my eighth year. This my eighth year doing it and I think the focus has become more about gender and sexuality we talk a lot about social justice marginalized communities I like to really mix in voices of you know get like a heavy hitter Janet mock and then have some one that no one's heard of you know someone who doesn't have access to the mainstream media who's doing work kind of on the margins and doing really incredible work so I like to. I like to mix it up between both and then we do questions. Not Every single episode. Do we do questions but people right? Obviously people right to me nonstop with advice questions and they call in. It's interesting because people often don't think about sexuality and social justice but even within our field you can see that there are literally thousands of brilliant folks doing really really genius work In terms of therapy of education in terms of reproductive rights. And they just don't have their voices heard because people meet me and they're like oh my gosh you know you the new Dr Ruth or in Canada the sue. You're the only one doing it and I have to tell them. You know what there are thousands of people who don't have the privilege of having this platform right right and we still thinker like suffering a little bit from being whitewashed and the people who have the most platforms and are talking the most and have the Mike most tend to be white and I feel like a group of people called that out several years ago and I took that call and criticism really seriously and feel like as a white person. It's important for me to acknowledge my white privilege and the privilege. I have in the industry the Privilege. This BDSM episode is a perfect primer for those dipping their toes into the kinky pool for the first time or for experienced kinksters looking for a little renewed inspiration. Ken & Sunny’s approach to kink is quite different than what’s typically depicted. Nearly every stereotype, archetype, and “rule” you thought applied to BDSM is about to be broken. In this episode Sunny talks with Lexi Sylver of the Seek, Discover, Create podcast about all things BDSM. They cover: the roles of a dominant and submissive, how to start communicating and experimenting with your partner to discover what your kinks are, tips for playing safely, the importance of consent and safe words, what “aftercare” is really all about and how it works, the potentially therapeutic benefits of BDSM play, and more. Her words, not ours. The author, porn director, podcaster, and all around bad ass human shares some amazing stories and wisdom with us. If you are thinking about skipping class today, think again. Professor Lynn Comella joins us to talk about her books New Views on Pornography: Sexuality, Politics, and the Law (co-edited with Shira Tarrant, 2015) and Vibrator Nation: How Feminist Sex-Toy Stores Changed the Business of Pleasure (2017). The reach of Vibrator Nation’s readership has extended beyond the typical academic circles and has resonated with a mainstream audience due to its easy reading style, and because it details a history of feminist sex shops that the public was obviously eager to read about. The history of these shops is a fascinating one and one that has literally changed the ways in which we think about the female orgasm within our post-sexual revolution era. The story of these stores isn’t one of capitalist opportunism, it’s actually a story about revolutionary feminist sexual educators who wanted to spread their sexual knowledge to a starving female public looking for ways to expand their sexual pleasure. In short, our understanding of sexual history would be incomplete without the information contained in this book. Pornography also has a role to play in this history. We talk about how pornography worked its way into these sex shops after owners long resisted their inclusion. And we also talk about the movies produced by the legendary San Francisco sex shop Good Vibrations. This is a history that you’re not going to want to miss! Learn more about Lynn on her website. By popular demand, here is a re-issue of my April 2017 interview with Cooper S Becket about non-monogamy and bisexual men. Welcome to my virtual therapy room! I am Dr Lori Beth Bisbey and this is Sex Spoken Here. Remember that this podcast deals with adult themes so if you don’t have privacy you might wish to put on your headphones. Joining me today is Cooper Beckett. Cooper S. Beckett is the co-founder and host of Life on the Swingset: The Podcast since 2010, author of swinging & polyamory novels A Life Less Monogamous and Approaching The Swingularity, and memoir My Life on the Swingset: Adventures in Swinging & Polyamory. He teaches and speaks on swinging, polyamory, pegging, play parties, and coloring outside the boundaries of your sexuality. He is a graphic & web designer, photographer, and voice over artist, has been a guest expert on Dan Savage’s Savage Lovecast, & is the announcer of Tristan Taormino’s radio show Sex Out Loud. He is currently working on two instructional non-fiction books, one about beginning non-monogamy, and another about pegging. We started by talking about swinging and spoke about the swinging culture in the late 70’s early 80’s and how that went underground after the AIDS crisis began. Cooper talked about the new renaissance that has existed since the internet has boomed and how much easier it is for people to find each other. We spoke about the normative swingers – heterosexual male and a bisexual or bicurious female. Cooper talked about how much more he has enjoyed having parties that are sex parties instead of swinging parties where there is a larger cross section of the non-monogamous community. We spoke about the invisibility of the bisexual male and Cooper talked about the fear that heterosexual males demonstrate when confronted with male bisexuality but also about the attitude from some of the gay community that there is no such thing as bisexuality. I agreed that this was also my experience and both of us spoke about the importance of identifying loudly as bisexual to educate others about bi-invisibility. Cooper spoke about the prevalence of people who are ‘broken’ in some way in alternative communities and made it clear that he wasn’t talking damaged. The example he used was the larger number of people with chronic illness who are seen in these communities and he suggested that people who have chronic illness look for things to make them feel less miserable and so explore more. We spoke about how research in this area would be fascinating and he spoke about the need for research on prostate orgasm (as there is a suggestion of a correlation between regular prostate stimulation and lower levels of prostate cancer) but that there is no research money for any research on sexuality. Cooper’s book, Approaching the Swingularity has just been released. Click the link to purchase from his site www.coopersbeckett.com. (Though it can also be purchased on Amazon. As he is an independent publisher, purchases from his site give him more of the price so please consider purchasing directly). You can also find him on twitter @coopersbeckett. B is for Bisexual Hi everyone! Welcome to the A to Z of Sex. I'm Dr Lori Beth and I am your host. We are working our way through the erotic alphabet one letter at a time. Just a reminder this podcast deals with adult content, so if you don't have total privacy, you might want to put on your headphones. Today the letter is B and B is for Bisexual. People who are bisexual are attracted to both men and women (and some are attracted to all genders) Joining me today to talk about this topic is Cooper S Beckett. He is a graphic & web designer, photographer, and voice over artist, has been a guest expert on Dan Savage's Savage Lovecast, & is the announcer of Tristan Taormino's radio show Sex Out Loud. We started our talk about male bisexuality by looking at some of the differences to female bisexuality. We both agreed that bivisibility is a huge issue but even worse for men than for women. We spoke about how difficult many people find ambivalence and how non-binary identifications are the definition of ambivalence for people who are not non-binary. We spoke about the difficulties and joys of being a bisexual male. Cooper said that in the swinging community he reckons a good 80% of the women are bisexual – or at least willing to engage in bisexual activity. We spoke about how men have encouraged women to explore and he suggested that if women were willing to encourage men more he thought more men would experiment. He was very clear to say that he wasn't blaming women for anything, just suggesting that encouragement would help. We spoke about how communities are not supporting each other at present but instead bickering about levels of privilege, problems and issues. We agreed this was sad but Cooper said it is like the last rat off a sinking ship syndrome. There is so much more persecution at present that people fight for scarce resources. Cooper spoke about a lot of this coming from people being afraid of things they don't understand. We highlighted how important it is to learn what turns you on, accept yourself and what turns you on so that you can create a congruent authentic sexual life. We were both clear that this starts with personal exploration, internal exploration rather than looking to the external world. We spoke about how difficult it can be to seek help when you are struggling with these issues and how important it is that people have safe places to take these issues. Cooper finished by saying that his journey thus far has been wonderful even through the difficult parts and encouraged other men who are unsure to be willing to try. He emphasised that what you do and who you are may be different things and that doing something once doesn't change your orientation. You can find Cooper at http://coopersbeckett.com There you can find links to his podcast and all of his books. Thanks for joining me for the A to Z of Sexoo this week. Write to me with suggestions for the show, questions you want answered at drloribeth@atozofsex.com , follow me on twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Check out my YouTube channel: Dr Lori Beth Bisbey. For a free 30-minute strategy session with me, go to https://atozofsex.com/ and click the button that says Schedule Now! If you enjoy the show please leave me a review on iTunes and Stitcher. The next five people who review the show will receive 1 session free, a £250 value. See you next week when the letter will be C.

Cooper S. Beckett sat down with us to talk all things swinging. What’s the difference between swinging and polyamory? Why don’t the sexual subcommunities always play nicely together? What’s the deal with bisexuality in the swing lifestyle? When is the right (and wrong) time for couples to explore non-monogamy?
