It took a minute, but now that we're all recovered from the awesomeness of the 2023 Float Conference in Louisville, KY, the crew is back to talk about some of their favorite moments. For Kim, it was a unique year where all her worlds melted together - her friends were onsite as panelists or offering services, one of her kiddos got to speak, her hubby put on the first ever Float Conference rock concert, and many attendees got to visit her center, along with two other beautiful centers in Louisville. With a smaller group of attendees, the conference felt cozy and intimate, and Gloria said this year felt like it was more collaborative with the panel discussions and roundtable talks. Dylan even stayed out til midnight (Portland time)! If you were there, you'll enjoy this extension of the warmth and sense of community that everyone felt at the event, and if you weren't there, you'll hear some of the insider tidbits you missed. If you attended the 2022 Float Conference in Portland, Maine, you might remember a special presentation diving into the fascinating history behind the founder of sensory deprivation. Marshall Hammond from Float Tank Solutions and Float On in Portland joins us in this episode to discuss John C. Lilly's interesting history. You'll hear about Lilly's time at St. Thomas, his dolphin research, his continued connections to the CIA and Project MKULTRA. It's a wild ride! Marshall has been floating and working with the float world since 2012, and he has spent many years studying Dr. Lilly and plans to write a book about all that he's learned. If you missed last year's Float Conference, or if you chose to attend the amazing breathwork session that happened at the same time, and you missed Kim's “Creating an Organic Sales Funnel” workshop, you're in luck! In this episode, Kim breaks down a few key points about implementing some strategies to get folks to come back through the door again after their first float. You'll hear some common challenges to getting returning guests, how to create a powerful offer that isn't salesy, how to create “soft sell touchpoints”, and how to create a successful mindset to motivate your team (or yourself!). It's not just about creating a killer deal or setting quotas. Creating an effective organic sales funnel involves thinking about your why - understanding that you opened your doors to help your community find relief from the world and all that comes with the human condition - and remembering that “selling” is really just “helping”. Be sure to take a few notes, and for your homework, try at least one of the strategies discussed, and then we'd love to hear how it goes for you! Send us a message so we can share it with the world! _WARNING: This episode includes a little language drop, so we don't recommend it for little ears. _ Have you ever wondered what happens when someone notices trends and news across the float industry, and then a group of podcast hosts get together about those things? If so, you're in luck! The crew invited Producer Olga to join the show and toss out the latest news and trends that have been happening over the past couple of months. You'll hear a bit about the great debate over transdermal absorption of magnesium sulfate, and how one floaty human is using magnesium chloride to supplement the float solution in an effort to promote absorption for health benefits, along with some concerns and questions we should all iron out before shifting the standard. Other news includes floods across multiple centers and hair dye debacles, sprinkled with tidbits on some favorite tools and products to have on hand (including Fiberglass Stain Remover, vitamin C tabs, charcoal filters, a sump pump, and water leak alarms). You'll also be SHOCKED to hear the dates for the 2023 Float Conference in Louisville, KY. (Spoiler: Pre-conference workshops and events start on August 16th, and the conference is August 18-20!) We all know that floating is a powerful practice, loaded with countless benefits. We're often aware that we don't want to promise too much, but one particular area where we might be able to talk a little more is about how float therapy can be beneficial for patients with body image concerns and/or eating disorders. If you made it to the 2022 Float Conference, you likely heard Dr. Emily Choquette sharing the latest findings about how LIBR (Laureate Institute for Brain Research) is studying the impact of float therapy and anorexia nervosa. We were delighted to invited Dr. Choquette to the show to talk in depth about that data, as well as how she got involved in the work. She shared that since anorexia is a particularly challenging condition to treat, and new treatments aren't being developed fast enough, the research that had already been done on anxiety and floating was a perfect gateway to expand studies. Early research shows that even just a single float can promote positive changes in a patient's perception of their body. We chatted with her about what we, as float center owners, can do to continue to foster a relationship with the science community and how to talk about this benefit that could potentially help many individuals who struggle with body image or eating disorders. Let's get this clear first: stop calling it red light therapy. We stand corrected. You may have heard of this hot new therapy that's been taking off across the globe, but in this episode, you'll discover that it's not a new therapy, and it's not “red light therapy”. It is, however, the medicine of the future - the very same medicine that you saw in Star Trek when someone went to the sick bay, was treated by a laser beam, and healed. In this episode, James Carroll, founder and CEO of Thor Photomedicine joined us to talk about photobiomodulation therapy, or PBMT. He's a world-renowned expert in PBMT - a walking, talking, breathing encyclopedia of information about the benefits of this powerful therapy that's backed by thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies. James shares inspiring stories about how PBM has helped patients across the globe with everything from chronic pain to athletic recovery and even a specific disease that causes blindness. With more than 100 names for the therapy, it's hard to sort out the differences between devices and treatments, but James clarifies some of that as he describes what to look for and what benefits to expect if you're considering adding red light therapy, errrr, photobiomodulation therapy, to your center. Samuel Whiting was gracious enough to join the 2020 Virtual Float Conference and share his breathwork expertise, and he'll be coming back again to Portland, Maine, to offer an experiential workshop, as well as a main stage talk about the power of the breath when combined with the float practice. In this episode, you'll be mesmerized by Samuel's voice, inspired by his passion for creating awareness and disrupting “business as usual” in order to explore the intersection of the brain, body, and breath. If you haven't heard about it, there's a big event happening in Portland, Maine. Some might even call it the Maine Event - the 2022 Float Conference! We're incredibly excited to hear from the local liaisons for this year's conference - James and Amy Harder, who also serve on the Board of Directors and special committees for the conference. They're not only two of the coolest humans on the planet, but they're also amazing event hosts and have a ton of great fun planned for us in August! You'll hear a bit about things you can do in this beautiful, coastal city - from whale watching to partaking in “nature's cold plunge”. There's so much magic to be had by arriving early or staying late, exploring the sites, and making lifelong connections with the best people on the planet. As small business owners, fitting in a vacation can be a challenge, so just squeeze it in with the conference! Jack White will be performing at the Cross Arena just days before we all arrive, using the same space as us, so you know it's going to be legendary. (P.S. We've said it before, and our guest on this episode proves it's true - float center owners are a special breed. Sure, we could just own one business and run it, but why do that when we can run MULTIPLE businesses?! Kelly Caldwell, who owns Drift Float Spa in Greenville, SC, joins Kim and Drew in this episode to talk about wearing all the hats, including providing consulting services and selling float pods! You'll hear all the details about Float Spa pods that drain and filter 100% of the solution after each guest, as well as some unique features like aromatherapy, but you'll also hear how Kelly offers SIX services at her center. She also dives into some hiring strategies, including her theory on asking why you might want to ask potential new employees if it bothers them to hear people chewing, why it's a good idea to delegate and outsource some of your work, and how to grow your team so you don't have to be the one to do it all. (And of course, that might lead to you starting another side venture like she has!) No matter if you're a software geek like Kim and Gloria, or a fly-by-the-seat of your pants person like Drew, there are ways to review your priorities and also give yourself some grace about how you manage your time. Some things simply come full circle, especially in the float world. In this episode, you'll journey around talks of beards and the Fluxstache, to pivotal moments with suffering mental health to burlesque and the reactivity of the immune system. You'll hear the story behind the name, “Dr. Flux”, from the beginning with GoGo Harder, all the way to the present day with our own predictions for completing that full circle… with a Float Conference GoGo Harder celebration of the official earning of his doctorate to become the “real” Dr. Flux. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. Just depends on where you were to experience it all… yep. Gloria and Kim, both Float Conference board members, attended the event live and provide a recap of some of their favorite talks and workshops. EP10: In today's episode we talk with James Harder of Float Harder Relaxation Center located in Portland, ME. James and his wife Amy opened Maine's first muti-tank floatation center. A year later they began operating New England Float Partners, a company offering float tank consultation, installation, service and maintenance all over the North East. James also serves on the board for the Floatation Tank Association and The Float Conference.
After a long weekend at the virtual Float Con, the crew unpacked their bags and brains to share some of the highlights of the annual event. It was a historical moment - the first Float Conference to take place entirely on screen, and it was definitely one to remember. You’ll hear a few big speaker moments, including a big news bomb that left us all a bit speechless when we heard it. We also share the highlights of some of the Think Tanks, where participants were invited to turn on their cameras and ask questions, share their own best practices, and join in that ol’ Float Con sense of community that we all love. It wasn’t all perfect, so you’ll hear a few of the downsides and mishaps, and why some folks are hoping for a virtual option again in the future. Sponsors Float Helm (https://floathelm.com) Floataway (https://floataway.com)
So how did it go with the trial run of the Virtual Float Conference? Well, the main speaker was in tears, people were “eeking”, and technology played nice, except when it didn’t. Of course, those tears were of gratitude, the eeks were from float friends who were excited to see each other, and technology is… technology. The crew shares their experiences with Virtual Float Conference Preview - what it felt like on the “speaker stage”, all of the behind-the-scenes dishing, and how they enjoyed the Think Tanks and Discord parties. While there were definitely a few learning moments, the full conference is going to be pretty amazing if the Preview was any indication. You can tell this episode was recorded a little while ago, really close to after we all got back from the Conference. The boys are a little tired today, but they still have lots to talk about. Grashkahmn share their initial reactions to the Conference now that it's being run by the industry as a non-profit. This is a nice episode especially if you're looking for some insights on their behind-the-scenes perspective on this big industry event and how it has changed this year.
Graham and Ashkahn are back to give their recap on the Float Conference. No, not THAT Float Conference, the Russian Float Conference. The guys got to go speak at the float event on the other side of the world and are reporting back on what that was like, how their industry is shaping up, and some of the lessons we can learn about their industry over there. Additionally, Graham and Ashkahn lied to you. The show notes will not have a puppet show in them.
Being completely vulnerable by floating, face down, in the ocean helps alleviate fear, depression, anxiety and stress. Our brain has evolved to always be on alert when in our surroundings. The energy that's allocated to constant monitoring and "threat assessment" can be diverted towards more productive endeavors. One way of deactivating the "constant monitoring" and fear is to make yourself completely vulnerable. The best way, that I've found, to do this is to go into the ocean and put your face in the water and put your arms out. It actually works better when there are other people around. Because when you make yourself completely vulnerable yet you turn off the monitoring, you realize that you actually do not need the stress that comes along with the constant monitoring at all. You can train yourself to not be on alert and to not live with stress. This will help you live a happier, more productive and healthier life. You will also have more energy. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to practice this exercise. I do it every time I'm at the ocean. Again, to repeat how I do it: 1) I go to the ocean or a lake where there are other people (I prefer to go to South Pointe in Miami) 2) I put my face in the water and hold my breath 3) I try to calm the fear and thoughts, such as "what happens if this person bumps into me" by focusing on my breath 4) I soon reach a calm state where I realize that my constant monitoring and alertness is not a benefit, rather it's a detriment 5) It's important to practice this floating therapy as much as you can. It will help increase feelings of love and kindness. I don't think that it leads to sensory deprivation like other float tanks, but... the flotation definitely helps me with anxiety and it may be able to help others with depression and mental illness. Dylan steps into social media land to share his strategy for social media, specifically using Buffer to help his Instagram game. He shares how he’s creating a consistent brand on his account… and Gloria chimes in with how she breaks those very same rules, but she does create consistency in the types of posts she creates routinely. Grab your Vanilla Ice, baby! Grashkahn is back with a brand new edition… of the Float Con! Graham and Ashkahn of Float On and Float Tank Solutions join us to break down the details about the 2019 Float Conference. Last year, they announced that the conference itself would become a non-profit, so over the last few months, they’ve assembled a team to create the new version. The conference now has a new Board of Directors and a small army working out the details. They share that the basic format isn’t really changing, but the conference will be moving from city to city each year, starting in Denver. Listen in to see what will be happening each day, and what training workshops will be offered and when. This year’s focus is on establishing the new administrative structure, so it won’t feel vastly different just yet. You’ll hear who the new MC will be, and get to get giddy when you hear a few Float Faves will be making an appearance.
