He's the son of Timothy Leary and one of today's leading voices in the psychedelic renaissance of the 21st century. But Zach Leary's journey hardly unfolded in the way you might expect. In this deeply informative and myth-busting podcast, Tami Simon speaks with Zach about his new book with Sounds True, Your Extraordinary Mind. With a "friend to friend" approach to discussing the amazing potential for the safe use of psychedelics, Tami and Zach converse about: carrying forward the legacy of the front-runners of psychedelic exploration, including icons like Terence McKenna, Humphry Osmond, Dr. John C. Lilly, and of course, Zach's father Timothy and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass); acknowledging the mistakes of the past and dispelling the myths and misconceptions about psychedelics; bringing legitimacy to the use of psychedelics for healing and insight; a review of the major compounds and their sources (natural and manmade), such as MDMA, psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, LSD, and ketamine; the importance of the 3 S's: set, setting, and sustainability; turning insights into action; challenging experiences (instead of "bad trips"); Carl Jung and shadow work; using psychedelics to overcome our fear of death; Zach's personal battle with addiction and how psychedelics supported his recovery; the nature of consciousness; psychedelics as humanity's evolutionary partner; and more.
Dr John C Lilly (1915-2001) was a neuroscientist, psychoanalyst, psychonaut, inventor, a renaissance man who broke with all convention in his pursuit in the exploration of human consciousness. His work with Dolphins in the mid-sixties was funded by Nasa and made him so well known that he become the inspiration behind much pop culture including the films “The Day of the Dolphin” & “Altered States”. He predicted the dangers of computers & A.I in the 70s when he first encountered “The Solid-State Entity”! In this episode Jay & Aspasia take a brief glimpse into his life. Pioneer, visionary or drug fuelled madman Lillys impact on culture is felt as strongly today as it was at its inception.Link to The Girl Who Talked to Dolphinshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmHIlEVEhEI&ab_channel=NewLifetimeMovies2022Link to The Truly Disturbing Reality of Dolphinshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6QGPT1jsvg&list=LL&index=3&ab_channel=CasualGeographic
On today's episode, I talk to illustrator and comics creator Brian Blomerth. Brian grew up in Newport News, Virginia, and in college started to move towards making art for a living. Some of his early work was for Vice, as well as making tour posters for bands like Phish or album artwork for musicians like Ryley Walker. Since 2019, he's been working on a series of books about 20th century psychonauts starting with Bicycle Day, about the discovery of LSD, and the follow-up, Mycelium Wassonii, about the scientist couple responsible for popularizing the use of psychedelic mushrooms in the US. His most recent book, Lilly Wave, about the life of scientist and psychedelic dolphin tormentor John C. Lilly, came out in October, and it's a delight! Is CIA disclosure coming? From dolphin spies to real warp drive technology, cover-ups are finally being revealed.
Scientist, mad man, dolphin f*cker. John C. Lilly fielded important research into consciousness and the mind. He also drugged a bunch of dolphins with LSD and had a lady dressed like a clown jack them off. We contain multitudes. The mid-20th century was heady times full of LSD, and a NASA flush with cash, which is how we get to today's story about a scientist trying to get dolphins to speak English. Strange Country co-hosts Beth and Kelly talk about Dr. John C. Lilly, inventor of the sensory deprivation tank and dolphin whisperer, whose plans for dolphin communication veered off in a strange direction when one volunteer started giving Peter the dolphin a helping hand, if you catch our meaning. Erik Davis stands tall at the intersection between mysticism, technology, and counterculture. He's one of my favorite writers, the author of many stupendous books, among them "TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information," "Nomad Codes," as well as "High Weirdness" a highly entertaining book that explores 1970s counterculture and its relationship with altered states of consciousness. Erik is also an Esalen faculty member, having recently taught a course on Embodied Writing and Spiritual Practice. In this conversation, we went into his new book, "Blotter," an extended meditation on LSD blotter art and the culture that surrounds it. We also found time to veer off into a host of topics, including Terence McKenna, John C. Lilly, Dick Price, madness, Stan Grof, the spiritual emergency network, prep-school deadheads, the Village Voice, the Internet and Erik's theory that it kills subcultures, the phenomenon of what Erik calls "cannabis thinking," how he was never much of a "cannabis writer," tape machines and their place in the counterculture, the Merry Pranksters, Phillip K. Dick, Bay Area Poster art, the DEA and its own little zine - and much more. Erik is one of the cofounders of the Berkeley Alembic - a nonprofit bodymind center committed to experiments in transformation. https://berkeleyalembic.org/ You can also find his collected works at Techgnosis: https://techgnosis.com/
Today I talked to Benjamin Breen about his book Tripping on Utopia: Margaret Mead, the Cold War, and the Troubled Birth of Psychedelic Science (Grand Central, 2024). The generation that survived the second World War emerged with a profoundly ambitious sense of social experimentation. In the '40s and '50s, transformative drugs rapidly entered mainstream culture, where they were not only legal, but openly celebrated. American physician John C. Lilly infamously dosed dolphins (and himself) with LSD in a NASA-funded effort to teach dolphins to talk. A tripping Cary Grant mumbled into a Dictaphone about Hegel as astronaut John Glenn returned to Earth. At the centre of this revolution were the pioneering anthropologists - and star-crossed lovers - Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson. Convinced the world was headed toward certain disaster, Mead and Bateson made it their life's mission to reshape humanity through a new science of consciousness expansion, but soon found themselves at odds with the government bodies who funded their work, whose intentions were less than pure. Mead and Bateson's partnership unlocks an untold chapter in the history of the twentieth century, linking drug researchers with CIA agents, outsider sexologists and the founders of the Information Age. Astronomers have been on a constant quest to discover life beyond our planet. But once we make contact, how will we communicate with them? That's where John C. Lilly came in — a world renowned neuroscientist obsessed with understanding consciousness — human and beyond. By the 1960s, Lilly was heading up an experiment backed by both NASA and the US Navy. What unfolded from there is truly stranger than fiction. If you'd like to support us, please visit https://www.buymeacoffee.com/rhhh
In this episode, Randy Dible joins Justin in a discussion about the phenomenology of the float tank. They discuss the creator of the float tank, John C Lilly, afterward shifting to more speculative matters of metaphysics and cosmogony. Randolph Dible is a lecturer in philosophy at St. Joseph's University, New York, and a philosophy doctoral student at The New School for Social Research. His work is in phenomenology and Ancient Greek philosophy. randolphdible.com Music for this episode: Exhausted Divinity, Niky Nine
Dolphins, drugs, new age music. Isolation tanks as a portal into other dimensions. True love and fake aliens. Julian shares a personal love story from the nineties that intersects with the work of prolific scientist, inventor, and psychonaut, John C. Lilly. The belief that we can contact extraterrestrial civilizations, which are waiting to usher humanity into a golden age of light and love, is now a hugely profitable and popular commodity. Apparently these extraterrestrials also want to help us vanquish the forces of Deep State darkness. This is evidenced by the QAnon-and-alien-disclosure-style of programming on Gaia's spiritual subscription platform (which brings in roughly $80 million annually). Yet: Gaia is currently embroiled in a legal battle with a former host who claims that his stories about secret space programs and eight-foot tall “blue avian” aliens are actually part of his trademarked creative IP. When it comes down to dollars, he admits it's all make-believe. Has he really ever dropped acid in a flotation tank though?! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

VYS0024 | Between Being Real and Not Real - Vayse to Face with Nathan Paul Isaac - Show Notes Barely able to contain their excitement, Hine and Buckley welcome to Vayse the one and only Nathan Paul Isaac, creator of the essential chronicle of high strangeness in Somerset, Kentucky, the Penny Royal podcast. Penny Royal has been a huge influence on Vayse, and Hine and Buckley geek out as the conversation goes deep, wide and weird - from discussion of Penny-Royal-favourite topics such as cybernetics and synchronicity to pondering Hansen's trickster and theories on the nature of elementals and non-human intelligence by way of terrifying stories of faceless dream entities and a firm consensus on the importance of maintaining a healthy hatred of Nazis... and to sweeten the deal even more, Nathan drops a few breadcrumbs as to what kind of weird stuff to expect from Penny Royal season 3... Hidden in the Mind: Ken Russell's Altered States This week Mr. Chavez and I continue our exploration of mind-altering narratives with a look at Ken Russell's 1980 Hollywood debut, Altered States. While not a completely successful film, there are elements here that force the audience to look deeper into the subject of sensory deprivation, isolation tanks, hallucinogenic drugs and the controversial work of counterculture scientist, John C. Lilly. Perhaps a victim of 1980s cinematic limitations, Russell's film (from a screenplay by noted playwright and screenwriter, Paddy Chayefksy) touches on a number of interesting factors without being able to successfully depict them on screen. As always, it's an interesting conversation between the two of us, and one that we believe you will enjoy. There's quite a bit to unpack in this episode. We hope you'll join us. Questions, Comments, Complaints, and Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks. Yeshe has lived a very interesting and unusual life. She has lived of-grid her whole adult live in basic hand made shelters called benders, yurts and for the last 12 years a round house which she built with her partner and raised a family in. All of these homes have not been connected to the electricity grid and services such as running water, mains gas, or sewers. It is a life close to nature and offers many benefits and challenges alien to the average modern human. She also spent 12 years travelling in India and Nepal and became the student of two gurus: a Hindu Yogi and a Tibetan Buddhist Lama. Lastly we touch upon the subject of psychedelics and her time being the carer for the famous psychonaut John C Lilly after he had a stroke. If you attended the 2022 Float Conference in Portland, Maine, you might remember a special presentation diving into the fascinating history behind the founder of sensory deprivation. Marshall Hammond from Float Tank Solutions and Float On in Portland joins us in this episode to discuss John C. Lilly's interesting history. You'll hear about Lilly's time at St. Thomas, his dolphin research, his continued connections to the CIA and Project MKULTRA. It's a wild ride! Marshall has been floating and working with the float world since 2012, and he has spent many years studying Dr. Lilly and plans to write a book about all that he's learned. If you'd like to learn more, be sure to check out Marshall's podcast and Patreon called Deep State History. We say it a lot here on the show, but the 1960s was an era unique for its sheer volume of uninformed drug-induced white guy fuckery. Emblematic of said fuckery was Dr. John C. Lilly, who was real into dolphins and LSD and giving dolphins LSD when he wasn't floating in an isolation tank trying to miraculously make it even further up his own ass. Fortunately the '70s and '80s came along, and everybody got their shit together hahahahahaha just kidding. One guy did get an idea to put on a rainbow afro wig and cram some Jesus into televised sports though: Rollen Stewart gained a kind of fame, then a kind of infamy, and finally a free ticket to life without parole for his trouble. Fortunately he also inspired one of the greatest early '90s SNL sketches ever made.Content warning: There is some deeply upsetting stuff about dolphins in here. Also there's a hostage situation in a motel room during which no dolphins are harmed.
Today we're diving deep into the fascinating topic of one of the most unique inventions of all time, the flotation tank, created by the enigmatic and pioneering scientist, John C. Lilly.I'll be sharing what the float tank is all about, some of my experiences in it, my futuristic theory involving the float tank, and how it can be a useful tool for spiritual awakening and development.More free content: brentspirit.com

It is often fun to bounce ideas between good friends. This conversation with Creon Levit is no different. Creon's interests are vast, but one thing is for certain, he is working towards a better future. Looking at psychedelic use beyond treatment for mental illness, Creon shares with us the notable tech giants, and their possible inspirations, as well as a glimpse into his daily diet and routine.“Your friendship is one of the highlights of my life. And so thank you for everything.”Creon Levit worked for NASA as a research scientist for 32 years doing high performance computing, data visualization, computational aeronautics, quantum chemistry, and spacecraft optics. For the last eight years he has been chief technologist and Director of R&D for Planet Labs - a satellite imaging company that has built, launched, and operates almost 500 earth-imaging satellites.Creon was good friends with Terrence McKenna, Sasha Shulgin, and John C. Lilly and has had a long interest in the intersection between psychedelics and technology.Show notes:* An applied physicist at NASA for 30 years – introducing Creon Levit* Cyber Security and surveillance* Psychedelics and technology* The use of psychedelics for creativity* The fallout for using some of these substances* Whats the big deal in talking about these things?* Are we in planetary conflict?* How Creon changed his physiology ** This is not medical advice- Always seek the advice of your health care provider before undertaking a new health care regimenLinks and references:* Psychedelic Wisdom (Dr. Richard L. In 1954, physician and psychonaut John C. Lilly invented a floatation tank that provided sensory attenuation and isolation. It involves a tub filled with loads of epsom salt, with water heated to skin temperature. This allows for an amazing entry into a meditative state. In our experience, an hour in a float tank is like sitting zazen for 8 hours. It might be a way for you to at least experience a quality meditative state to which you can return later in a simple seated position. It might, if you can afford it, become a regular part of your monthly wellness routine. Though some think floating ought to be considered fringe medicine, we aren't interested in any wild claims about the health benefits but know first hand how helpful it can be for our emotional and mental wellbeing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thepynp/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thepynp/support
Strange and thought provoking episode today! In the 1940s, 50s, and early 60s, animal behavior researcher John B Calhoun ran a number of experiments on rodents regarding how their behavior would be affected by increased urbanization if all their basic needs were made. The results were terrifying. Crowded rats and mice became increasingly violent and lost their reproductive instincts to the point that eventually, the utopia went extinct after enduring a final phase full of random violent attacks, apathy, cannibalism and more. Could the increased urbanization of humanity also lead to our species' extinction as Calhoun warned? Or are we humans too different from rodents to presume that what happens to mice and rat would also happen to humans? I found today's episode one of the most thought provoking we've done in quite some time. Hope you do too! John Cunningham Lilly was an American physician, neuroscientist, psychoanalyst, psychonaut, philosopher, writer and inventor. He was a member of a generation of counterculture scientists and thinkers that included Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, and Werner Erhard, all frequent visitors to the Lilly home. He often stirred controversy, especially among mainstream scientists. Lilly conducted high-altitude research during World War II and later trained as a psychoanalyst. He gained renown in the 1950s after developing the isolation tank. He saw the tanks, in which users are isolated from almost all external stimuli, as a means to explore the nature of human consciousness. He later combined that work with his efforts to communicate with dolphins. He began studying how bottlenose dolphins vocalize, establishing centers in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and later San Francisco, to study dolphins. A decade later, he began experimenting with psychedelics, including LSD, often while floating in isolation. His work inspired two Hollywood movies, The Day of the Dolphin (1973) and Altered States (1980), as well as the videogame series Ecco the Dolphin. In his book Simulations of God, Lily explores differing definitions of god from God out there to God as Nature and God as the group. He also explores what it means when you declare I AM GOD. John C. Lilly was a scientist who invented float tanks, LOVED LSD and believed that dolphins and humans could establish communication. "Science" is fucking wild and sometimes it ends with a lady shaving her head and jerking off a dolphin.
John C. Lilly managed to convince NASA to fund an experiment that had the potential to reshape our understanding of the universe. Let's teach dolphins to speak English so that they could pass on messages to a hierarchy of aliens that control everything that happens on Earth. How did the experiment play out? These limits are to be found experimentally and experientially. When so found these limits turn out to be further beliefs to be transcended. In the province of the mind there are no limits. However, in the province of the body there are definite limits not to be transcended.”
Sara Birns, plainly put, oil paints figures that make the viewer uncomfortable. Her figures are often an exaggerated versions of reality with the ugly sides of humans and animals alike. Yet, there is something so refreshingly human about being exposed to and confronting these normally over-looked sides of life in such a beautiful, detailed oil painting. Sara talks her past gallery shows that span from online to Italy, her mentors, the paranormal, John C. Lilly, the importance of surrounding yourself with what you love, and the next steps in her career.
