Behind every great radio show is a great team and in this episode of Tuned In To The Future we take a look at the importance of the presenter producer relationship.
Previous SRA Selector winner Jack Saunders gives some handy tips for the SRA Selector application process.
Last year, in association with the British Council and the Student Radio Association, Folded Wing picked a group of student presenters who presented a special SRA version of The Selector on their university stations for six months. At the end of the period they were asked to submit an entry of their best show, and a winner was chosen! Jack Saunders of Nottingham Trent University's station Fly FM was selected as the winner, and wins a trip to Mexico City with the British Council. We got Jack into the studio, along with Goldierocks and the British Council's Phil Catchpole to talk about their experiences taking part in the project.
In 2013, the Folded Wing team had the pleasure of working with a very talented young radio producer by the name of Robin Blamires. Robin has produced a fascinating and moving 12 mins audio soundscape that reflects how it feels to deal with Hypomania, and the manic episodes that he sometimes experiences, focusing in particular on one that happened during his university degree. To listen to the soundscape go to https://soundcloud.com/robinblamires/ ... Robin has also made this fantastic Audio Diary that gives an insightful, enlightening and humorous behind-the-scenes look at the production of his programme.
The Folded Wing team, The Student Radio Association, The Selector and the British Council have all got together to give you some tips and information for the application process for getting The Selector onto your student radio station.
In this month's Sound Women podcast: • Mary Anne Hobbs sits down with her BBC 6 Music Kate Cocker to mull over their working relationship, just as Kate leaves for a new job at Key 103. They discuss dubstep, women's magazines, being saved by John Peel, looking like Nikki Sixx, poached eggs, and why it's alright to admit you don't know what you're doing. Incidentally, if you've never heard Mary Anne talking about her childhood's illicit music-listening and running away with a band, this interview is well worth your reading-time. • Lorna Skingley and Sarah Louie Harrison of Smooth Operations talk about their 50-part Radio 2 series The People's Songs, a social history of post-war Britain via fifty popular songs. The series is still available to listen to on the BBC website, so get stuck in. • Karen Pearson talks to Ruth Barnes about setting up her indie Folded Wing, creating new platforms, getting commissions, nurturing presenters and becoming a Big Deal despite (or thanks to?) not having a plan. On the members' only page of the Sound Women website, there's also a bonus bit of podcast, in which Mary Anne and Kate consider the power of silence in radio. It's not just them sitting in silence. I assure you they do speak. If you'd like to be on the Sound Women podcast, get in touch: tweet @soundwomen or email podcast@soundwomen.co.uk. The next podcast will appear on 1st February 2014, so please do return then! Helen Zaltzman • CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE SOUND WOMEN PODCAST ON iTUNES •
