Singer, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Emma-Jean Thackray joins Chrystal Genesis to talk about her new album, Weirdo, an ambitious, deeply personal project written, performed, produced, mixed, and arranged entirely by Emma-Jean in her South London flat. In this episode, they discuss how grief, neurodivergence, and resilience shaped the record, which blends elements of jazz, funk, soul, grunge, and pop. They explore her early path into musicianship, how isolation and creativity came together in the making of Weirdo, and why embracing your weirdness can create a powerful sense of self. The conversation touches on vulnerability, community, and finding your home in music, with tracks from Weirdo, out now via Brownswood Recordings and Parlophone Records, featured throughout. The forest industry is booming in the American South, but communities like those in the Carolinas are raising concerns about the environmental and social costs. Discover their innovative solutions and what it means for sustainability. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Full Episode Description: The forest industry in the American South is booming, but at what cost? According to some government leaders, logging is bringing big economic gains to rural America. But in places like the Carolinas, frontline communities – and especially the low-income people of color and Indigenous people who live in the midst of all this — are telling a different story, and have solutions. With Trump's increased tariffs on Canadian timber and wood products, deforestation is only going to speed up in America's “wood basket.” Two Carolina-based organizations are converting a 300-acre former South Carolina plantation into the South's first environmental justice training center: the Brittons Neck Community Forest. In this episode, Laura is joined by three guests spearheading the project. Lucia Ibarra and Danna Smith are from the Dogwood Alliance, an organization based in Asheville, North Carolina that mobilizes diverse voices to protect Southern forests and communities from destructive industrial logging. Reverend Leo Woodberry is a South Carolina-based faith leader & environmental activist. Together they're showing the true value of forests in the US South, and what it means to remain climate resilient in the face of heavy industry. Plus, a commentary from Laura on what trees can teach us about gender identity.“. . . We will start beginning to develop case studies and highlight it to policy makers . . . We are going to expand upon these other communities and create other pathways to justice in using this model. And this will help to build a foundation, to create equitable policy that elevates people, ecosystem, the value of them over the industries that are greenwashing . . . - Lucia Ibarra“. . . This project is something that we like to refer to as restorative justice. We know that people labored on this land in slavery without compensation, and so for them to have the land now and be able to use it for recreational activities, et cetera, can help them to create an engine of economic development . . . We see that as restorative justice . . .” - Reverend Leo Woodberry“. . . Too often there's this narrative about logging for economic development . . . We needed to show the alternative, and how you can keep forest standing in a community in a way that actually benefits the community. That it's good for climate, it's good for biodiversity, it's good for climate resiliency, and it's good for the local economy.” - Danna SmithGuests:• Lucia Ibarra: Director of Conservation, Dogwood Alliance• Danna Smith: Executive Director, Dogwood Alliance• Reverend Leo Woodberry: Pastor, Kingdom Living Temple & Executive Director, New Alpha Community Development CorporationWatch the episode cut airing on PBS stations across the country at our YouTube channelSubscribe to episode notes via PatreonMusic In the Middle: “Meditation align with Nature's Intelligence” by Divine Earth featuring Sirius B from her album Align with Nature's Intelligence released on Brownswood Recordings. They started the band partly because they both believe in the importance of Afrobeat. It encompasses a cultural legacy of politics, activism, community, and also serves as collective memory. It’s extra important to the children of dual heritage, to the Africans living in London, and to all the people who yearn for connection to their roots. Discover how the Left is envisioning a liberated future in today's political climate at the Socialism Conference, hosted by Haymarket Books, featuring key activists and organizers from diverse backgrounds.En el Socialismo Conferencia en Chicago, Laura Flanders y activistas discuten la abolición, descolonización e inmigración con un enfoque en estrategias más allá del ciclo electoral. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: Abolition, decolonization, immigration, Palestine — how is the Left thinking about the future in this perilous political moment? Socialists and activists showed up in the thousands to this year's Socialism Conference, a four-day event packed with discussion of today's most pressing issues and strategies for organizing. Laura Flanders & Friends was there, in Chicago (just days after the Democratic National Convention) for a live taping with three renowned organizers: Nick Estes, a citizen of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe and author of “Our History is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance” and co-founder of The Red Nation, an organization dedicated to Native liberation; Rachel Herzing, an organizer, activist, and advocate fighting the violence of surveillance, policing and imprisonment and co-author of “How to Abolish Prisons: Lessons from the Movement Against Imprisonment”; and Harsha Walia, co-founder of No One Is Illegal, an anti-colonial migrant justice organization and author of the books “Undoing Border Imperialism” and “Border and Rule”. As you'll hear, they're not counting on politicians to step into office and grant their wishes. They're focusing beyond the election cycle. Join us as we envision a liberated future and explore all that it takes to get there. Plus Laura's commentary.“. . . Having Deb Haaland [serve as] the Secretary of Interior, has been good in the sense that we've gotten these really amazing reports on things that we've already known, that there was this massive systematic genocide of Native children . . . But at the same time, her department has overseen more oil and gas leases on federal lands than the Trump administration, and that's not an indictment of her as a person. That's an indictment of that department . . .” - Nick Estes“. . . We know every single fall in an election season that Black women get told we're the saviors of the entire world and everything relies on us, even though the rest of the time it's very happily that we're kind of left to die, quite literally. We are given this message on a regular basis, and I don't know what to say to people about that. The policies of the so-called United States are not life-affirming policies for Black people, for imprisoned people, and for people living as women.” - Rachel Herzing“I just think that the strongest counterforce to fascism and anti-colonialism is an organized Left. It is not a candidate . . . Sometimes I think we get fixated on what candidates will or won't do, and we don't think about the conditions that the Left can create to actually make those possibilities happen . . .” - Harsha WaliaGuests:•. Nick Estes (Lower Brule Sioux Tribe): Author, Our History is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, & The Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance• Rachel Herzing: Co-Author, How to Abolish Prisons: Lessons from the Movement Against Imprisonment; Former Co-Director, Critical Resistance•.

STR4TA - "Turn Me Around" from the 2022 album STR4TASFEAR on Brownswood. Just before the world shut down in 2020, renowned DJ/record label owner Gilles Peterson joined acid jazz legend Jean-Paul Maunick (better known as "Bluey") for an improvised jam session in Bluey's parents' garden shed in London. The result became STR4TA, and last year's debut LP, Aspects, draws influence from the '70s/'80s Brit-Funk sound they both grew up with. Their sophomore full-length, STR4TASFEAR, will be released on November 10th via Peterson's own Brownswood Recordings, and is described by Peterson in a press release as "a continuation from our first project, celebrating the ground breaking Brit-Funk era of the late 70s/ early 80s while continuing the story with the rise of the drum machine; paying homage to the Acid Jazz and Electro Soul that followed and the evolution that inspired club culture and new Jazz of recent times." He continues, "For me it's a record of parallels, not only in music but a lot of the issues we are experiencing today began in that Brit-Funk era. The parallels in the political landscape of that time and today are poignant and the moment of overall change we are living in is reflected in this record. Bluey is a significant executer of exhibiting the important social questions through music from a Black British perspective and it's an honour to work with him." NeONE the Wonderer - "Nose Dive" from the 2021 album Future Bubblers 5.0 on Brownswood Recordings. Nathan Lawrence might have a limited body of work at NeONE the Wonderer, just a smattering of singles going back to early Summer 2020, but what the UK-based artist has out showcases a fully-formed artist with a captivating point of view. Our Song of the Day, “Nose Dive,” displays his penchant for jazzy, grooves, intoxicating soulful croons, and effortless flows on topics both personal and metaphysical. The song comes from the 5th edition of the Future Bubblers compilation. An expansion of Gilles Peterson's network supported by Arts Council England and the PRS Foundation, Future Bubblers is an ongoing talent discovery and artist development scheme focuses on developing unsigned talent and building audiences for new left-field music. The compilation acts as a springboard for the musician's careers with the cooperative model providing direct revenue to the artists by a share of the profits resulting in a sustainable income to work from. Previous Future Bubblers include artists such as Yazmin Lacey, Skinny Pelembe, MC Snowy, Forest Law and Kayla Painter to name a few. Unc D (musicians Dante Basista & Danny Svenson) are an Ohio-based remix and production team who've seen a huge growth of interest across the last 18 months in their jazz-heavy tracks, influenced by the London scene. We chat about how UK jazz releases of the last 5 years (especially the work of Kamaal Williams and Brownswood Recordings) are so important to their music, garage-sized jazz production, and how their work has been gathering popularity, particularly on Spotify. There's some tinkering to our house-band, remixes to the max in our weekly quiz, and the delivery of the classic line, "I try to use excessive keyboards at all times". Collaboration and democratic decision making is just part of how worker owned businesses, or co-ops, fared better than other companies during the pandemic. By and large they survived, even thrived, and today they're less likely to experience the labor shortages many businesses face as the economy reopens. “That's no coincidence,” say Laura's guests for this episode. Worker owned co-ops have long provided people the opportunity to create more just, resilient, and inclusive workplaces. To kick off International Co-op month, we hear from a journalist who's been covering this story, a law professor who advises co-ops, and one of the worker-owners of ChiFresh Kitchen, a Chicago-based co-op owned and operated mostly by formerly incarcerated women. Started during Covid, ChiFresh Kitchen continues to distribute tens of thousands of healthy meals a day to people who need them, and provide living wages to workers who are shut out elsewhere. All that plus Laura on two very different businesses in Chicago: El Milagro Tortilla and the New Era Windows cooperative. Music in the Middle: “Self Love” by Joe Armon-Jones featuring Obongjayar from his album Turn to Clear View released on Brownswood Recordings. If you're a listener or a viewer, you spend time with us. Forest Law - Slow One Beatbaby - I Want You Shredy - PROMI53 HMD - If I An Alien Called Harmony - N.H.H. (Needlessly Heedlessly Headless) Kayla Painter - All the Glimmering Wilroy - 4F3D63Hex Sydney - Zither Rhythm 古箏 feat. Kerensa Lewis Ashley - Horizon Revenu - 1s and 0s Lazy H - When the Horns Come In Ratomagoson - Summer Wish Thru Colours - 420HATS
Gilles Peterson’s label Brownswood Recordings is renowned for music discovery and as a launching pad for talent. The Future Bubblers 4th edition compilation is no exception as it contains a variety of flavors including an shapeshifting track by Iranian born and London based Iman Houssein called “Slow Things Down.”

Kassa Overall - “Darkness In My Mind” from I THINK I’M GOOD on Brownswood Recordings. Originally hailing from Seattle and now based out of New York, Kassa Overall has used his inimitable blend of jazz, hip-hop, and experimental leanings to explore heady and existential topics. With his latest record, I THINK I’M GOOD, he’s at his most personal and revealing. On the record he explores his own experiences with mental illness, having experienced manic episodes and subsequent hospitalizations in his youth. “Mental instability or hyper-sensitivity was something that felt too taboo to talk about," Kassa Overall says in the record’s Bandcamp description. "I want to show the world that mentally sensitive people are the innovators of our society, and hopefully set a new standard that includes a healthy way of life and embracing our unique perspective on reality.” He addresses these themes directly on the LP’s standout track, “”Darkness In My Mind.” Joined by jazz pianist Sullivan Fortner, the two create an atmosphere that veers into the gothic with elegant-yet-nightmarish piano keys cascading against Overall’s mournful, vocoder-effected vocals. The song veers drastically between moments of beauty and bliss to skittering, hectic rhythms and electronic fever dreams. The musical tension is an apt complement to Overall’s musings over his troubles, recreating that troubling and inescapable dream that can come in our most difficult mental moments. In conjunction with KEXP’s upcoming Music Heals: Mental Health, we’re asking Song of the Day artists to spotlight a different organization. Overall has chosen the Jazz Foundation of America’s Musicians Emergency Fund. The foundations outlined goal is to create a program that protects artists and “turns despair into hope.” They do this by ensuring blues, jazz, and roots artists are given the housing assistance they need, the care they need to stay healthy, and financially security to keep their basic needs met.
STR4TA - "Aspects (Demus Dub)," a 2020 single on Brownswood Recordings. While 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic have kept us from dancing out our sorrows, artists and producers around the globe are still holing up in their studios to give us sensational, future dance floor hits. Case in point, the new Brit-Funk project STR4TA. The project’s debut single ‘Aspects’ was recorded in a London shed just before lockdown went into effect before getting a release this fall. The infectious grooves get even more dazzling with the b-side dub mix by producer Demus. Funk and psychedelia instrumentation collide with raw, dance rhythms for a perfect impromptu at-home dance party to tide us over until we can all return to the clubs. durée : 00:07:22 - Dans la playlist de France Inter - par : Jean-Baptiste AUDIBERT, Thierry Dupin, Muriel Perez, Julien Deflisque - Après un premier EP prometteur sorti en 2019, le collectif Londonien est de retour avec un nouveau titre marqué par l’Afro-Beat.
On l’appelle l’Éthio-jazz. Gilles Peterson is the face of his label Brownswood Recordings - but he doesn't run it alone. Emily Moxon and Ruby Savage tell Tina Edwards what it's like to manage and create visual campaigns for such a celebrated indie label. They also talk about what they look for in artists and reflect on the success of 'We Out Here' one year on.

Back from our week of flu with a show jammed with the usual blend of wonky sounds and questionable chatter. Highlights this week include a cut from the Brownswood Recordings compilation of the sound of London's jazz scene, ably illustrated by Shabaka Hutchings. We have the comeback of DOOM, featuring on the latest Dabrye record, bonkers French sounds from Zad Kokar, tribal noise from DJ Khalab, sublime electronics from Glasgow's Cucina Povera and much more. Tracklisting Lawrence Le Doux - Tronf 424 “Tap
Delicate, brilliant electronics dominate this week's podcast, from downtempo brilliance of TOKiMONSTA through to dancehall dub forward-thinking purveyors Equiknoxx we have a lot of spectacular sounds. There are new tunes from Bjork and Euros Childs, as well as hefty rock from Godflesh, jazz breaks from Hello Skinny and loads of great new independent music. Tracklisting Hello Skinny - Mr. P.Z. DJ, broadcaster, producer and owner of Brownswood Recordings, Gilles Peterson rarely needs an introduction. His weekly Saturday afternoon radio show on BBC 6 Music brings in two million listeners globally. He’s had the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus and Jamie xx as guests and contributes to radio stations from Austria to Australia, Ukraine to Japan. Drawing from the depths of his collection, Wild City #123 is a beautifully strung collection of tracks. A piano laces the first twenty minutes while a subtle tabla builds in the background until it’s the core item holding the mix together as tracks weave in and out seamlessly. Plucking obscure raagas, he blends them together perfectly with a raucous, funky, Afro-jazz track from Lasse Fernlof & His Orchestra titled ‘The Chameleon’. Around the 20-minute mark, Peterson cuts everything to allow ‘Raaga Bhoopali’ by Pandit Prannath lull you into a sense of total relaxation. The track neatly divides the two halves of the mix as the second half leaves the sub-continent for Africa and beyond while allowing the sitar and tabla to maintain control and be the focus of the mix. A masterpiece, it cuts through his vast collection of records with selections from India, Ghana and beyond, effortlessly put together, exclusively for Wild City.
