Hi and welcome to Decomposed Radio 094. Featuring on today's show is experimental artist and producer Kayla Painter, who's immersive audio- visual performances and productions have been impressing and delighting audiences in equal measure for several years now. Kayla's music has been played and critically acclaimed by Mary Anne Hobbs, Giles Peterson, Steve Lamacq and Tom Ravenscroft... to name but a few. The mix she's recorded not only gives a fantastic sonic journey, but also a unique insight into her musical tastes and influences, crammed ful of light and mellow and tougher, darker moments. Also a keen climber, Kayla's appearance on Decomposed Radio is the perfect example of only ever being one person removed from knowing someone through climbing, after a chance meeting on a South Wales sea cliff and the realisation that we have a mutual acquantance.... friend of the show Niall Grimes. So big up Grimer! Nice one! For more information on Kayla head to her website www.kaylapainter.com and follow her musical and climbing journeys on instagram. For the tenth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest Alan Oldham representing stories from Detroit.ALAN OLDHAM has been called “Detroit's Renaissance Man,” equally as known for his art as for his music under the pseudonym DJ T-1000. The Detroit-born polymath, now living and working in Berlin, began his dual careers in the late 80s. First as the host of the “Fast Forward Program” on WDET FM 101.9, Detroit's first-ever radio show devoted exclusively to electronic music, and as a young indie comic artist, writing and drawing his own original creation, “Johnny Gambit” (predating the Marvel character). Oldham was later tapped by his childhood friend, Derrick May, to illustrate the label art for the now-classic records “Nude Photo” and “Beyond The Dance” on his fledgling Transmat label, and Detroit Techno history was made. Oldham was later hired by another childhood friend, Jeff Mills, to do freelance PR for the nascent Underground Resistance collective, writing press releases for the label. When Mills departed for a solo career, UR partner “Mad” Mike Banks tapped AO to replace him as DJ for their Australian Tour of 1992. The codename DJ T-1000 was adopted, and history was made once again. Jumpstart to infamy.Since then, as an international DJ, Oldham has spun all over the planet, as far afield as Tokyo, Manila, The Phillipines, and Shanghai. When he's not behind the decks at home clubs Tresor Berlin and RSO, on the road to places like Batumi, Georgia or Trapani, Italy, or in the studio making music for labels like RSPX/Rekids, BPitch Berlin, Suspected Music, Third Ear, Elypsia Records, or his own Pure Sonik Records label, he is making new paintings and organizing art openings showcasing his iconic works. Oldham has put on art happenings in Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna, and Detroit, as well as his iconic techno artworks being on view in Paris, London and Dusseldorf, as part of its traveling “Electronic: From Kraftwerk to the Chemical Brothers” exhibit. The multi-talented Oldham has also made his artistic debut in Kobe, Japan in 2022 with the exhibit “Massive Dynamic” at the Nick Jerky Art Cafe. In 2024, Oldham was also honored by the Mayor and Detroit City Council with a “Spirit of Detroit” Award for his musical and artistic contributions to his hometown. And back in Berlin, as part of Love Parade founder Dr. Motte's Rave The Planet team, Oldham helped Berlin Techno to achieve UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. Oldham's long-awaited EP as DJ T-1000 for Rekids sub-label RSPX is out now, as well as his new “Ask Me No Questions And I'll Tell You No Lies” EP on Pure Sonik Records, currently riding high on several Spotify techno charts including Mary Anne Hobbs' on BBC6. "You could feel the ground shifting beneath you." The long time BBC Radio host talks about her party, All Queens, her love for SHERELLE and music as a force for good. Resident Advisor continues its celebration of Women's History Month (and International Women's Day) with a special conversation with Mary Anne Hobbs. The long time BBC Radio presenter has been a diehard documenter of music culture and a radio fanatic ever since she was a young girl. As she recounts in this episode, the transistor she kept in secret while growing up became her getaway to another universe, a beacon of hope that she listened to every night under the covers at home. In 1996, she became a host at BBC Radio 1. It was a time when there were few women involved in the music industry in general, and few people at all championing leftfield electronic music. Hobbs famously started the Breezeblock show and championed dubstep and grime, pushing new artists whose work she admired and helping usher them into the limelight. Today Hobbs' iconic voice is still hosting the radio every day—this time at Radio 6. She's leading an exciting project called All Queens, a platform that started as a radio show for women's music that has quickly turned into a touring club night and residency at fabric run by and starring women, from the sound engineers to the bouncers and headliners of the night. Hobbs discusses the platform and is joined by close friend SHERELLE, who dissects some of the nuances in representation the scene fails to overlook when it discusses gender in nightlife. The pair recently performed sets together at the BBC Radio 6 Music Festival. Listen to the episode in full.

Chris Parry was, once, the drummer of New Zealand band The Fourmyula who went on to work for Polydor in the UK - going on to sign The Jam in February 1977. Chris first saw the band on 22nd January 1977, where they supported Bearded Lady at The Marquee in London (after Shane MacGowan had told him to check them out!). The band were signed for a £6,000 advance and 6% royalty rate which initially covered only the group's first single, but Polydor quickly exercised an option to extend the contract to four years and four albums. Chris has co-producer credits with Vic Smith on the first 2 albums along with the singles that came outside those album cycles - All around the World in 1977 and News of the World in 1978. For All Mod Cons - the 3rd Album - Chris had Associate Producer credits on To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time), David Watts, It's Too Bad and 'A' Bomb in Wardour Street. In 1978, he left The Jam set up to create and run his own record label - Fiction Records - and signed The Cure (after hearing a demos of ‘10.15 on Saturday Night' and ‘Boys Don't Cry'). He managed The Cure until 1988 and Fiction released their music until 2001, when he sold the label to Universal Records. Another couple of nice Weller related connections - in 1984, Chris produced an album by Tim Pope - Director of multiple music videos for The Style Council and was also MD of Radio Station - XFM from 1992-1998 with an amazing line up including Steve Lamacq, Mary Anne Hobbs, Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant, Zane Lowe and Gary Crowley Session (Paul did a session on that show in 1997). In our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY episode we chat with Hannah Ashcroft about her music and various other subjects. Born in the North-West of the UK, Hannah Ashcroft is a guitarist, singer and songwriter whose material and live shows have made her an indelible part of the Manchester indie music scene today. Her prowess on the guitar is equally impressive on the acoustic as the on the electric guitar, and they combine with her beautifully haunting vocals which are at once soft and powerful – creating a sound which effortlessly bridges indie, folk, singer-songwriter and rock. She has gained initial acclaim from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music's Tom Robinson & Mary Anne Hobbs as well as tastemaker music sites such as Secret Meeting, For The Rabbits and Ear To The Ground. Hannah then collaborated with Mercury Prize-nominated artist Beth Orton as part of Brighter Sound's gender equality initiative Both Sides Now.

Your recruiting clients are increasingly aware of the commercial benefits of recruiting a diverse workforce. That means they will soon expect and require their recruitment partners to be capable of delivering a diverse shortlist. Merely claiming to be a champion of D&I isn't enough -- clients want to see evidence that you have a process in place to deliver diverse talent. The recruiters who are able to demonstrate this capability will differentiate themselves in the marketplace and steal a march on their competitors. To discuss how recruiters can achieve this, I invited entrepreneur Helen McGuire to join me on The Resilient Recruiter podcast. Helen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Diversely.io, an end-to-end hiring platform that uses tech to reduce bias in the hiring process for businesses. As an award-winning entrepreneur in the diversity space, she founded the first women's careers platform in the Middle East – Hopscotch – in 2016, which grew to a worldwide community of over 80,000 working with businesses like Facebook, Mastercard and Nestle, and expanding to Singapore in 2018. Helen began her career in London, achieving her dream role at BBC Radio 1 in her early twenties producing award-winning shows for the likes of John Peel, Mary Anne Hobbs and Gilles Peterson. Concurrently, Helen presented her own monthly radio programme - Join The-Dots - airing in over 15 countries globally, DJ'd and wrote for top music publications and travelled the world interviewing artists. Helen was the first female resident DJ at Club 360 in Dubai and still occasionally DJ's to this day. Episode Outline and Highlights [2:00] Helen shares how they were awarded HRM Asia's Top 3 Tech Start-Ups 2020. [4:15] How to check your diversity score online. [6:00] Approaching the diversity space from a technology perspective. [12:08] Unconscious bias - why should we care? [14:51] Sourcing - how to attract more candidates by changing your language [19:24] How Helen turned a massive idea into a product. [25:06] Helen shares the process of getting funding for her business [32:18] Helen reveals by far the biggest challenge that she had to overcome. [40:15] Juggling your tasks - starting a business and having a work-life balance. Approaching the Diversity Space - from a Technology Point of View Working in the diversity space for about six years, Helen shared what drove her passion. When she had her first baby in 2014, she very quickly realized that a lot of women (colleagues, friends) were frustrated and had to end their career - for the reason that employers could not think a little more outside the box and offer flexible working schedules to their tenured female staff members. This moved her to create an award-winning women's careers platform - Hopscotch. The initial aim was to find women more flexibility in their careers but ended up being helpful to women of all professions. Growing rapidly, the platform gained around 80,000 in their network! With this initiative, Helen had three realizations: Diversity around women - not everybody was open to thinking about things differently The impact of unconscious bias - not only women are affected Despite the reach, she felt that she is only making a very minimal impact This lead Helen to look for a deeper and wide-ranging solution to address the above problem. Diversity in Sourcing - Adapting your Language Here is something really interesting. Did you know that during sourcing, changing your language can attract 70% more diverse candidates and twice as many candidates with the skillset that you're looking for? Here is how Helen explained it: “Think about it from a day to day perspective. If you are speaking to your grandma, if you are speaking to a child, if you are speaking to your boss, if you are speaking to your friends, you don't use the same language right? You don't talk to them in exactly the same way. You use language that they understand, that helps you to have a conversation with them, that helps you to have something in common with them. The same is true when you're sourcing.” Listen to what else she said to support this fantastic concept and how to adapt your language to your potential candidates. Helen McGuire Bio and Contact Info Helen McGuire is the CEO and Co-Founder of Diversely.io, an end-to-end hiring platform that uses tech to reduce bias in the hiring process for businesses. To scale the impact of her work Helen joined the renowned tech start-up accelerator programme, Antler, in January 2020 and the idea for Diversely was born. Joining forces with her Diversely co-founder and CPO, Hayley Bakker, in April of the same year, the vision for the company is to reduce workplace bias for all those from under-represented groups - not just women – by creating a scalable, global solution through the use of AI-driven tech. The company successfully completed its pre-seed round in November of 2020 and has a five-strong team working to deliver online solutions for its clients in beta, with a full launch expected in Q2 2021. Helen's focus is on the marketing, content and sales side of the business and she regularly speaks globally on the topics of diversity, equality and inclusion. Helen is also a mother of three young children - Clementine (6), Arlo (4) and Iris (2) and lives with her husband, Justin, and their English bulldog, Percy, in Singapore. Presenter Georgie Rogers goes backstage at the historic Roundhouse venue to speak to some of the brilliant female artists on the line-up about the women that inspire them and their experiences of the music industry. Establishing a collage of influence and musical intuition is no simple feat, it can take time for an artist to establish and forge an identity which is unique and representative of their own character. Adriaan De Roover is a Belgian experimental musician who has just released a new album called 'Leaves'. The album is a freeform piece of work which layers instrumentation and soundscapes in an abstract and yet enchanting manner. It's described as being a piece of work which balances both "peace and restlessness". Perhaps better known under the guise of Oaktree his music has previously been championed and supported by the likes of Bonobo, Mary Anne Hobbs and Lefto. His sound is diverse and draws upon elements of the fourth world, establishing comparisons with new age musicians and the likes of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. Adriaan describes his new album as follows: “‘Leaves’ was written between 2016 and 2018, mainly in a cabanage in the Ardennes, in solitude and around nature. Although there are some outward moments, I tried to make music that finds as much beauty in small gestures, in doubt and in honesty (above all). I hope you can get lost in it, just like I did, and maybe then, some moments of beauty might reveal themselves.” We invited him to record a mix which showcases the diversity of his own musical personality, his take on sound and sculpture. He picks tracks by the likes of Bloc Party, Rosalia, Photek, Nicolas Jaar, Alice Coltrane and Anenon.

Freelance journalist, author and campaigner Anna Codrea-Rado is this episode's guest. I was lucky to meet Anna (Twitter: @annacod) at a journalism event about a week or so after my redundancy last May, because she is so positive, but also practical, about making a freelance career work. At the time, I was just about keeping the feelings of panic repressed, while I tried to learn what freelancing is all about... [still learning, btw] Anna is the author of the free First Aid for Freelancers e-book, The Professional Freelancer weekly newsletter and she's the brains behind the huge #FairPayForFreelancers campaign. In a climate where editorial jobs are less safe than ever, Anna has done a lot of work to help other freelancers feel equipped to deal with embarking on a different career path, and also to feel part of a community. We don't just talk about the business side of freelancing on this episode though, as important as that is. Anna firmly feels that her career couldn't have taken off as it has if she'd stayed in her staff job at Vice. She takes us through the best story she's written - involving her grandfather and a commission for The Paris Review - and the time her hero, BBC 6 Music presenter Mary Anne Hobbs, invited her onto a panel! Newcastle Rock ‘n’ Roll band Ali’s Love Child are hoping to stand out from the crowd after reaching the finals of a national music competition. The quintet, were one of five acts, to perform in the final of The Independent newspaper’s Battle of the Bands competition back in February. Seventy contestants from universities across the country entered the national competition and Ali’s Love Child were thrilled to make the final. But disappointingly, the five-piece band didn’t win and came third. However, they received great feedback from the judges, such as BBC Radio 6’s Mary Anne Hobbs, which has inspired them to continue writing and recording material.

Last weekend the BBC 6 Music Festival rolled into town, and as part of the fringe, Nadine Shah performed deep within the belly of our HOME building site. Digital Reporter Ben Williams caught up with Nadine and Mary Anne Hobbs afterwards to get their thoughts on the performance, the festival and HOME itself. #HOMEmcr #6MusicFestival
In this month's Sound Women podcast: • Mary Anne Hobbs sits down with her BBC 6 Music Kate Cocker to mull over their working relationship, just as Kate leaves for a new job at Key 103. They discuss dubstep, women's magazines, being saved by John Peel, looking like Nikki Sixx, poached eggs, and why it's alright to admit you don't know what you're doing. Incidentally, if you've never heard Mary Anne talking about her childhood's illicit music-listening and running away with a band, this interview is well worth your reading-time. • Lorna Skingley and Sarah Louie Harrison of Smooth Operations talk about their 50-part Radio 2 series The People's Songs, a social history of post-war Britain via fifty popular songs. The series is still available to listen to on the BBC website, so get stuck in. • Karen Pearson talks to Ruth Barnes about setting up her indie Folded Wing, creating new platforms, getting commissions, nurturing presenters and becoming a Big Deal despite (or thanks to?) not having a plan. On the members' only page of the Sound Women website, there's also a bonus bit of podcast, in which Mary Anne and Kate consider the power of silence in radio. It's not just them sitting in silence. I assure you they do speak. If you'd like to be on the Sound Women podcast, get in touch: tweet @soundwomen or email podcast@soundwomen.co.uk. The next podcast will appear on 1st February 2014, so please do return then! Helen Zaltzman • CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE SOUND WOMEN PODCAST ON iTUNES •
UK-based DJ, producer and record label head, Owen Howells, is currently touring Australia with upcoming gigs in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. Regarded as “part Aussie”, Howells grew up on our beautiful shores throughout most of his teen years. Owen’s record label Shades Recordings (formerly Shades of Grey) is described as “forward thinking music with its foundations set in the past”. Shades has garnered support from the likes of Mary Anne-Hobbs, Kerri Chandler, MANDY, Gavin Herlihy, Luke Solomon and George Fitzgerald right through to some of techno’s finest innovators and purists such as Eric Cloutier, Voigtmann & Bruno. Originally, Shades of Grey was an event in Brixton between Howells and a bunch of pals, which morphed into a record label after years of hard work. The concept of this event continued into their record label, which meant they were not bounded by any one genre. This allowed them to explore techno, house and any other electronic music genre that dealt in low-end bass. When he’s not busy in the studio, you’ll likely find Howell’s digging for rare grooves, as he’s a self-confessed vinyl junkie. Already toured Czech Republic, Malta, Berlin and North America, Owen is off to Japan after his Australian tour. Next Saturday, 6th September 2013, starting from 2pm, you can catch Owen playing at We’rehaus at Sydney’s Red Bull HQ in Alexandria. Deep House Australia will have a double pass to giveaway early next week, so keep your eyes peeled on the DHA FB page. Join the We’rehaus Facebook event here. 01. Introducing Statix. To put it simply, dubstep's answer to Bad Company. Quite a title? With distinctive records such as ‘Mind Over Matter', 'samurai' & ‘anymore' shredding their way through the dubstep scene, it's one that is definitely justified. Statix means …. Well, nothing actually, there isn't a reason behind the name, although there is a reason as to why Statix contains 4 members. Eddie, Ross & John take care of the beats, while arguably Bristol's finest dubstep MC 'Frilla' spits catchy hooks and bars on an unsuspecting audience. Back in 2008, a Music Technology course in Bristol began to bring the group together. Soon enough, friendships were developed, musical influences were shared and finally, the idea to bring about the group 'Statix' was put forward and optimised. It wasn't long before the world took notice of the somewhat refreshing sound the guys were bringing to the dance-floor. Radio plays from the likes of Caspa, Rusko & Crissy Criss followed a ‘mini-mix' request on the infamous Mary Anne Hobbs Radio 1 show. The spotlight was significantly placed upon ‘Mind Over Matter' which even featured on Mary Anne Hobbs' U.S tour blog, beside the likes of Chase & Status, Joker & Plactician. ‘Mind Over Matter' was then chosen to be released on one of the most exciting and contemporary record labels to emerge from 2009, ‘Screwloose Records' where it would join highly desired up and coming releases from the likes of KOAN Sound & Asa. After the sudden kick start, things only stated to get better for Statix, bagging themselves headline slots at club night across the UK and europe with the likes of Nero, Chase & Status and Being commissioned for remixes from the likes of Gatekeeper, Dr.syntax and Kate Mcgill. But as dubstep became more mainstream, The competition got tougher. They soon realised that a cunning master plan was needed to get them to the top, so they slowly slipped into the shadows to work on their sound. 9 months later, Statix are about to unleash the type of bass music the scene has been missing. Catchy vocals, Heaven sent synth lines, but keeping the basslines dark and nasty! Look out for the anthem that is 'Anymore' co-produced by the infamous Eddie K, seeing a release on H.E.N.CH in november 2011. Keep an ear out for forthcoming tracks on Screwloose records featuring 'Dr.Syntax' & 'Metropolis' (Foreign Beggars) amongst remixes for 'Zanetic' and Katie Sky and hold tight for the first ever static Drum n Bass colaboration with Hospital sensation 'N3gus'. Perhaps the best thing about Statix is the fact that the talent doesn't stop at the loading screen for Reason 4.0. Word of mouth alone established Statix high on the bills of several nights to start with in their home town of Bristol. Why? A well coordinated approach to live performances coupled with superb DJ skills and jaw dropping MC talent. Even with the somewhat dark sound the group can unleash through a sound-system, the future is most definitely bright for Statix. And with a live performance in the works, things are about to go from sick, to slick. TRACKLISTING1. Statix – Mind Over Matter – Screwloose 2. Statix – Purgatory – Rottun 3. We are approaching our 5th Birthday (May 12th) and as part of those celebrations we have a whole host of things planned among which is dropping perhaps our most eagerly anticipated ‘Blah Blah Blah Records‘ release to date: ‘Blacksmif – Hoop Dreams / Microweight’. With glowing reports coming in from such luminaries as Mary Anne Hobbs, Laurent Garnier, Disclosure, Ben Westbeech, Audiojack, Deadboy, South London Ordnance, and Midland among others, we decided to get Blacksmif behind the decks for an exclusive mix. The Blacksmif sound flirts on the edge of accepted thinking, taking flamboyant percussive and melodic risks within a bass driven jazz tinged environment, the following mix typifies this unique approach as it roams freely amongst an often highly segregated field of music. Blacksmif - Hoop Dreams / Microweight (BBB004) Out May 21st, Ltd WeAre5 Vinyl + Digital. 01. Fumitake Uchida - Walk Down 02. Donae'o - When Angels Sing (TEED Remix) 03. Mary Anne had previously worked with Hoya when she played at their Warehouse Project curation. We hooked up before her set to chat post-Radio 1 life, her contribution to Black Swan and Hoya Hoya. Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club saw another excellent booking in February with the arrival of ARIYA ASTROBEAT ARKESTRA to the stage – nine members filled up the stage and I haven’t seen the venue that full… well, ever. A lovely bunch of chaps and deserving of big things, the lads came together after working disparately on a number of projects in the Leeds/First Word fam. Awareness of their self titled album continues to grow since its release as they fill up venues everywhere.
