Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Would you like access to our advanced agency training for FREE? https://www.agencymastery360.com/training Have you ever felt like enterprise clients were running your agency instead of the other way around? Buried in endless proposals no one reads, forced into rushed timelines, or watching your margins shrink every time a project drags out? Today's featured guest opens up about how he broke out of that exhausting cycle. Instead of over-delivering just to keep big clients happy, and seeing little return, he made the bold decision to focus on smaller, more committed clients who were ultimately more profitable and easier to build long-term relationships with. He'll share what he learned about sustainable growth, including why productizing your services sounds great in theory but can actually become counterproductive when it only happens externally. He'll also explain the sales shift that changed everything: offering a low-risk, "foot-in-the-door" engagement that qualifies prospects, builds trust, and creates a smooth path into deeper service offerings. Charlie Clark is the founder of Minty Digital, a boutique SEO agency focused on travel and lifestyle brands that originally launched in Barcelona and now operates from London. In this conversation, he'll break down the mindset, systems, and strategy needed to stop chasing validation from big brands and instead build a business where profitability, alignment, and respect come first. In this episode, we'll discuss: Why mid-market clients deliver higher profits than enterprise. How internal productization increases efficiency by 3X. How clear pricing transforms the sales cycle. How AI forced a new level of adaptability in SEO agencies. From Struggling Freelancer to Sustainable Agency Growth After a short stint in an agency at age 22, Charlie tried to go solo before realizing he didn't yet know how to grow a business. He assumed he could do it on his own and quickly learned he wasn't ready yet. Instead of quitting, he got a job as a Digital Marketing Manager, where he could make mistakes, learn operations, and understand what actually works inside a business. Moving to Barcelona created the perfect environment for momentum. His one-month stay turned into ten years after he landed several clients within weeks. His first retainer was €500 a month, which he laughs about now, but he admits it took years before he learned how to price correctly and move away from low-margin retainers. Those early years were full of trial and error, but the big breakthrough was realizing that charging more wasn't always the key to profit. Charging smarter was. Real Profit Lives in the Middle, Not the Top One of the strongest lessons Charlie learned was that bigger retainers did not equal bigger profit. Working with enterprise clients, he saw they could easily squeeze margins, the team would end up over-delivering, and on top of it all, payment terms were a nightmare. After years, he realized these clients often cost the agency money when the team over-delivered just to keep them happy. By contrast, the clients who had been with him since the early days, the ones paying between three and six thousand per month, were the most profitable and the most loyal. They bought the same deliverables. They stayed for years. And they matched the agency's internal processes beautifully. Once he realized this, he moved to intentionally pursuing that sweet spot. Not the five figure monthly retainers or the cut rate ones. The predictable, operationally aligned middle where the team can deliver consistently and profitably. For Charlie, this changed everything from sales cycle speed to team alignment to lifetime value. Internal Productization: The System that 3X Efficiency Many agencies think productization means selling rigid packages that make you look less strategic. Charlie took the opposite approach. Internally, his team adopted highly productized systems, templates, and SOPs. They knew exactly what to do for a three thousand dollar client versus a six thousand dollar one, and how much effort each one required. Externally, the offer still looked consultative and customized. Clients saw a broad range of what could be included, but the delivery stayed tight behind the scenes. This improved profitability, gave the team clarity, and dramatically sped up onboarding. The biggest win? It eliminated the "start from scratch every time" problem that slows agencies down and kills margins. How Clear Pricing Transforms the Sales Cycle Before productization, Charlie would spend hours on proposals that often got ghosted. Once he added transparent pricing, clear expectations, and prequalification to the website, the right clients were self-selecting before the call even happened. By the time he spoke with them, they understood the price and the structure. Now he closes clients on the call or even through a single WhatsApp message. This is the power of clarity. It shortens cycles, reduces friction, and saves enormous amounts of time for a lean team. However, transparent pricing attracts budget mismatches, so Jason recommends removing pricing from agency's websites and switching to triage calls and the Foot-In-The-Door model. At the end of the day, there are a thousand ways to create a better sales process. What matters is that it filters, qualifies, and positions you as the advisor. Why a Paid Discovery Offer Builds Trust and Prevents Ghosting Both Charlie and Jason agree that a small, paid upfront engagement solves the biggest challenge in agency sales. Trust. SEO agencies in particular fight an uphill battle here. The barrier to entry is low. There are thousands of one-person shops. Many prospects have been burned before. A small paid engagement builds confidence, shows value quickly, and prevents ghosting. The Foot-in-the-Door offer should be simple, done live with the client, and designed to build the relationship. Not overloaded with deliverables that overwhelm the client and make them feel uneducated. When done right, it leads naturally into a larger project and then a retainer. Charlie's Kickstart product functions the same way. For eight hundred dollars, clients get quick wins and clarity. It works because it gives prospects a safe way to test the relationship and because it positions the agency as a trusted advisor instead of a vendor chasing a proposal. How AI Forced a New Level of Adaptability in SEO Agencies Charlie admitted that two years ago he felt bored with SEO. Then AI exploded. Search interfaces changed. Clicks shifted. And suddenly the industry was moving faster than ever. For many agencies, this uncertainty created fear. For Charlie, it sparked energy. He leaned back in, started speaking at events, ran experiments on AI search, and brought a fresh curiosity back to himself and his team. He described the past year as a sink-or-swim moment for agencies. The ones who coasted struggled. The ones who adapted thrived. Lean teams with solid systems could move faster and deliver more value. In his words, being nimble is now a competitive advantage. Figuring out AI reignited his passion in the business but it was far too much to tackle alone. This is why agency owners should have a community to lean on to try to figure out changes in the industry. Your network will determine your speed of growth. Agency owners who surround themselves with peers sharing what works and what fails will survive the next wave of industry change. The ones who go alone will struggle. Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Are you currently utilizing AI or fear it will replace digital agencies? Most agency owners fall into one of these two categories. However, those open to exploring this technology's potential and maintaining a sense of curiosity will lead the way in innovation. Today's featured guest lost some clients who opted for in-house ChatGPT services over his agency's offering. Instead of staying fearful of losing all his clients to this technology, he was prompted to explore how AI could be leveraged to enhance his services. Through experimentation, he created what has become a very effective foot-in-the-door to showcase good results with very little investment. Tune in to discover valuable lessons about creativity, collaboration, and the evolution of marketing strategies. Abraham Bree is the founder of Brand:Whatever, a full-scale, small-sized branding agency based in Brooklyn, New York. With over 15 years of experience in the marketing, branding, and advertising landscape, Abraham shares insights into his journey from traditional ad agencies to becoming an agency owner. He discusses the creative processes learned in the agency world and highlights the challenges of navigating interactions outside the creative bubble, particularly with non-creative roles like accounting. In this episode, we'll discuss: Why success in marketing requires more than creativity. Creating value-add AI-powered solutions. Leveraging relationships to sell your high-impact low-budget solution. Check out ElevateMyAgency.com and grab your spot! Forging Agency Leadership Through Diverse Roles Although owning an agency was not originally part of Abraham's career plan, he began his journey in advertising, dedicating eight years to traditional ad agencies where he refined his creative abilities. However, he soon discovered true success in marketing requires more than just creativity. It demands understanding of how to work with diverse teams and navigate corporate structures. In his view, creatives operate in a bubble without ever interacting with people outside the client who have different ideas and opinions. This realization came as he transitioned from the creative agency life to a corporate role as a marketing director. In this role, Abraham not only had to deal with his creative team but also the accounting, sales, and HR departments. This experience taught him the importance of cross-departmental collaboration, as he strived to align everyone with his vision while allowing them the autonomy to pursue their own initiatives. Following this successful transition, Abraham continued to ascend the corporate ladder, seemingly reaching the pinnacle of his career until the onset of the pandemic. The ensuing uncertainty around the lockdowns and the impact Covid would have on different companies ultimately affected his standing. His new employer could no longer sustain his role as Chief Marketing Officer and he was offered to continue as a consultant. It was the pivot he needed to launch his own agency. Turning AI Anxiety into an Agency Advantage By now, companies are either embracing the use of AI or fearing it. Abraham had chosen to embrace it, even before a client dropped his agency and brought their content creation in-house using Chat GPT. He had been toying with ChatGPT himself, but now felt worried he was starting to lose clients to this innovation. How could he use AI to sell more marketing campaigns? Abraham understood that effective marketing is not just about promoting a product or service; it is fundamentally about solving problems for clients. He decided he could use this technology to help people with their pain points and create innovative solutions that added value. In his first venture using AI in this way, Abraham created an app designed to assist families in planning their Passover vacations. This not only addressed the immediate concern of families looking for vacation ideas but also opened up avenues for marketing partnerships with kosher food companies. It effectively addressed consumer needs while presenting these businesses with an opportunity for direct engagement with clients, offering more value than a traditional print ad campaign. The app attracted over 40,000 users in a one-week span. Although the number of users dropped after the first week, but it was still a success for a high-impact low-budget campaign made with AI. By leveraging AI to solve pain points, Abraham was able to enhance strategies, foster meaningful connections with clients, and ultimately drive impactful results. Creating Value-Add Using AI for Agency Clients One of his best strategies with this project was coming to companies with an idea they could easily adopt. To gain support for this initiative, he targeted existing relationships, leveraging connections he had nurtured over the years and asking for just five minutes to explain his project. Companies quickly recognized the potential to get in front of clients with little cost and signed on. Abraham then utilized this platform again on several similar projects and continued to drive results with these short and impactful campaigns. These projects offer an excellent chance to demonstrate value to potential clients without the need for substantial retainers. This way, Abraham was able to generate buzz while also establishing a foundation for ongoing relationships. For agency owners who want to try this approach to AI, Abraham recommends using it as a tool. Don't go and try to build your own language model and become the next Open AI. Instead, focus on the many ancillary services you can bring to the table using AI. Figure out how you slice off a piece of your current offering and use it as a foot-in-the-door — that is where you'll find your goldmine. Overall, Abraham's advice to agency owners is to stay curious, a good guiding principle for anyone aspiring to grow in their field. The moment you think you have figured everything out is the moment you'll cease to progress. Let your curiosity fuel innovation, push you to explore new ideas, and seek out diverse perspectives, and you'll ultimately discover new avenues for success. Welcome back! In this episode, we're going to talk about why it's important to get your foot in the door—THEN navigate your career. You'll meet three Cameron-Brooks alumni who have successfully made the transition to the business world, all have been promoted and navigated their careers wisely. Two of them happen to be married! We were fortunate enough to have Chazz Hoskins, along with Luke and Marquette Leveque share their experiences with us. This episode was originally intended for them to share their experience in the Engineering Management Career Field. In this episode, Joel and the Panel discuss the misperceptions of Engineering Management, explain what Engineering Management is along with the competencies required to be successful, describe how diversified the work is, and provide the listeners with some sample industries. However, we felt our alumni were great examples of former junior military officers who made decisions early on in their careers that helped them establish a track record of success, build a skillset, and then make decisions that pivoted closer towards their ideal personal and professional goals. Chazz made the transition from the Air Force as a Developmental Engineer and launched his career with Lam Research as a Manufacturing Engineer in Silicon Valley. Lam Research makes advanced microchips that are in many familiar products we use every day such as our mobile phones, computing devices, entertainment systems, and even smart cars! He and his wife then decided it was time to move back to Ohio. Chazz navigated his career and now works with Silflex, a division of Lam Research, they've bought a home and are living in their dream location. Chris built a skillset and navigated to the ideal location! Marquette and Luke Leveque were classmates at the Naval Academy, Navy Nuclear Submarine Officers, came through the Cameron-Brooks program in 2018 and attended the April 2018 Career Conference. TOGETHER, they launched their careers at Boston Scientific, a leading medical device company that makes innovative solutions and medical devices to help improve the health of patients around the world. Luke has now shifted into a marketing role on the commercial side of the business leading their laser therapies team. Luke and Marquette navigated their career to the desired roles! Career Management When I meet with junior military officers to discuss their career goals, I ask a lot of questions to get to know them. One of those questions I ask is, “Why are you leaving the military?”. I often get the answer, “For more career control”. Makes sense! In the military, most decisions are made for you. You haven't necessarily had to make decisions as it pertains to “Career Management”. Your detailer, branch manager, or assignment officer makes it for you. It's also a specific career path within your MOS. If you deviate from it, you may not be selected for command or make the next rank and will be forced to make the transition out. For example, you are told when to move, when it is time for a new assignment, which organization, or unit you will join, etc. While this can make life hard for military officers, it does free them from the responsibility of “Career Management”. To some, that may be ideal. For some, it's not. In the business world, there are no scholarship contracts, assignments officers, early outs, PCS commitments, ADSOs, or mandatory job changes. Regardless of your company,
If that's what makes you feel better about yourself More and more I'm getting over killing time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzuEaXgN7fM It's been emotional. Thank you.

The foot-in-the-door technique is a marketing tool that gets someone to make a small commitment with you in order to increase conversions for a larger commitment. In other words, you want people to do a simple, easy thing and then you encourage them to buy something more. It's about getting people 'in motion' because something that's already moving (as opposed to something that's static) has momentum to keep going. Why does this technique work so well?It creates momentumWe all know that momentum works. It's not magic or psychology - it's just physics! If you've ever tried to push a broken-down car, getting the wheels to start turning at first is really hard. But when you get the car going (and it's in momentum) it gets much easier. And human beings are exactly the same.So as a business owner, you want to get people into motion. Because when human beings commit to something, they're more likely to be consistent with it. Robert Cialdini talks about this in his book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, and he calls it the Commitment Consistency Principle. It's the idea that if we say or do something that makes us internally back it up, we'll stand by it. Because we like to be seen as consistent - to ourselves and others. So if someone bought a small product from you (like an eBook or a paid-for lead magnet), they're more likely to buy a course you have on the same topic when you offer it to them. And that's because they've already committed to something and shown their interest. You only show your main offer to pre-qualified peopleAside from putting people in momentum, the foot-in-the-door technique works because it allows you to show your main offer to the people who've already told you they're interested. If you have a new programme and email your whole list about it (several times, as the case might be), some people might leave because they're not interested. But if you only email the people who already showed you they have an interest by making a small commitment (like watching a video about that topic), then you can tell them about your offer and be more confident they'll...
