Even though this is Rachel's birthday episode, Sam finds a way to make it about him. Classic little brother move. How did it take us 112 episodes to finally break down one of our most favorite tracks from folklore? All we know is it was worth the wait. The spirit and lore and TWIST of it all for this song made this one of the more fun episodes we've discussed in a while. Of course, we couldn't just dive into the song right away. We had to spill some Taylor Tea.... Sam insists on going into yet another discussion about Reputation (Taylor's Version). Rachel seems to think TS12 is in the works, but Sam isn't so sure Taylor has enough inspiration to release that album yet. What do you all think? Our new shit brings Bon Iver and Billie Marten into the conversation. Sam is still on his month-long cleanse, so he brings a cocktail idea to pair with this song. Rachel, meanwhile, goes FULL IN. We reveal there's going to be a major twist in this song, but you have to wait until we get there to find out what it is (in the rare event you have no idea already). Rachel finds a way to connect Taylor's songwriting to her relationship with Joe Alwyn. Fine, we'll give it to her. Overall, we had a MARVELOUS time ruining everything this episode and we hope you enjoy!!!Check out our "new shit" playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5LOn9LRJ8lnvnCbpl6fKVG?si=68ca3032d3aa470bShare with us your thoughts on today's episode by sending an email to swiftandswigspodcast@gmail.com.Leave us a written review on the Apple Podcasts app!Follow and rate our podcast on Spotify!

Ollie Olanipekun first met Nadeem Parera on Instagram, where they bonded over a love of birds. Realising how rare it was to see people of colour engaged with nature in the UK, they formed a walking group. One terrible flyer and a few years of enormous effort later, Flock Together has branches around the world, providing people with a place to meet and common ground. Join Ollie and Nadeem now, on the site of the very first Flock Together walk, as they discuss how their different backgrounds gave them the same mission, how mad it is to see a heron beat up a rat and whether or not they might one day get to name a new bird species. When James Wong first visited Kew Gardens, he asked his mum if this was what heaven looked like. The ethnobotanist, born and raised in Singapore, can barely remember a time when he wasn't fascinated by plants, a love which has led him around the world, onto TV and into a flat that looks like a jungle. Join James now, in Kew Gardens, as he talks about integrating plant life into our own lives, the leaf that inspired a generation of builders and how he ruins films for his friends. When she was 16, Lise Wortley read a book by the explorer Alexandra David-Neel, who had undertaken a 14-year journey through Asia. The idea of it stayed with her until ten years later, when she was searching for a way to improve her mental health. It dawned on her that David-Neel and other female adventurers like Nan Shepherd and Henriette D'Angeville, were far less well-known than their male counterparts. She set out to change that, by the incredible method of recreating their journeys, in the clothing they wore at the time. Join Lise now in the Cairngorms, to hear her stories of spending a month walking in the tweeds and poncho tent that Nan shepherd wore, travelling in David-Neel's yak wool coat and preparing for an ascent of Mont Blanc in Henriette D'angeville's tiny shoes. Lise is an ambassador for Passenger Clothing a responsible outdoor clothing brand with a mission to inspire meaningful escapism. Gaz Oakley was an intensely energetic, sporty person, who pursued fitness by loading up on carbs and protein, and hitting the gym. He was also a chef, so it's fair to say his life was quite intense. When health problems made him go looking for dietary solutions, he began a journey that would end with him becoming a champion of plant-based eating, rediscovering his love of the land and trying to bring the simple joy of food to as many people as possible. Join him and the chickens on his farm in Wales, as he talks about what growing your own food can give you, how simple it is to get started and why you shouldn't be too hasty with your naming choices. Lira Valencia grew up in Croydon, surrounded by the kind of urban sprawl that keeps the natural world at a distance. However, thanks mostly to the snails in her grandma's garden, she developed a passion for nature and forged a path to a career in the overwhelmingly white world of conservation. We love Billie Marten! Not only does her "ethereal grunge" music make all our pain subside, we also want to put a pasta podcast on the hob with her, and make lists of Simpsons episodes. Listen to this wonderful and (American accent) WILD episode and then listen to her marvelous new album Drop Cherries.
Sarah Wilson is always on the move. Her work as an author, presenter and speaker takes her all over the world. In the course of her wandering, she's learned a couple of things. How to ground yourself in a new place by hiking, how getting people to love something is how you get them to fight for it… and how long is too long to wear the same pair of shorts. We'd like to thank everyone who's taken us walking over the past few months and we hope you've enjoyed the company of astrophysicists, wild swimmers, activists and more. We'll be back next year, but in the meantime you can always revisit series 1 and 2, or follow us on instagram to see what we get up to at Canopy & Stars when we're not wandering about outside. This is for my friend K--- and M--- and for you, but I suppose it's for myself. Learn about my daughter's letter and the song she shared with insight into music and the restless soul. Billie Marten's song and Rick Rubin's book on Creativity.
Peter Wise is a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Brooklyn, New York. His sound marries introspective lyricism with bluesy guitar lines, laid back rhythms, anthemic hooks, and soulful vocals. It is both familiar and distinct, combining his love for the early seventies, southern California folk /rock storytelling, nineties Neo-soul and R&B grooves and modern pop / rock melodies to create a style uniquely his own. His latest single “Only Gotta Start” is the first to be released off of his upcoming 13-track album and sees the rebirth of Wise as an artist, as he enters a new chapter of being unapologetically himself. Written, performed, produced, mixed and mastered entirely by himself, this new track sees Wise taking complete control over the music he creates. “Only Gotta Start” is a song about letting go - letting go of dark thoughts, letting go of pride and ego, and letting go of hurt and frustration. Wise confides, “I was feeling pretty burned out with my life at the time I wrote this song. I felt that, despite being extremely busy and making a concerted effort to move forward professionally and personally, I wasn't making any forward progress. I really wanted to move on in my life, see progress in my career and progress in letting go of a past relationship.” “Only Gotta Start” is a message of renewal and a reminder to others that when ghosts of the past seem to haunt our present and/or future, all we have to do, and ultimately can do, is make the conscious decision to change our thinking, be grateful for what we do have, and let go of the weight of whatever it is that seems to stop us from moving forward. Sonically, the new song is inspired by the likes of Bruno Major, Billie Marten and The 1975. Through jangly guitars, warm vocals and an upbeat, feel-good rhythm, Wise never fails to put a smile on your face. The creation of the track also involved some experimental techniques, with the musician sharing, “I found my older sister's child-sized violin that she had when she first started playing and I tried to make music with that. I'm no violinist, but I found that trying to make music out of an instrument that I had no technical ability with forced me to be much more creative. I ended up finding a way to pick the violin and resample it to add the strings sounds that you hear in the intro and choruses.” The upcoming album touches on a multitude of real, raw and relatable themes, including struggling with getting older, not being who you thought you'd be, and not being able to get over past relationships. A true encapsulation of who Wise is, the release is some of his strongest work to date. He shares, “I've discovered the importance of calling myself an artist and working to be that. An artist is someone who takes in the world around them, processes it and creates their interpretation and understanding of themselves, others and the world they live in through their form of expression. That's what I love most about music and why I make music: to share with others how I see and process things.”
You often hear people talk about how getting out into nature gives them a change of perspective. But what happens when your profession is nature on the biggest possible scale? English singer-songwriter Billie Marten is only 24 and already touring her fourth album, Drop Cherries. Last night she played Rough Trade and tonight she's at Bowery Ballroom. But first, she joins us live in our studio to perform and discuss her latest work.
Liv Little often found herself asked to speak on behalf of all marginalised voices, as the only person of colour in the room… so she decided to build her own room. She founded Gal Dem magazine, a place and community where anyone could talk not just about their trauma, but about their joys and passions. It was the creation of a home that helped and inspired many people over the eight years for which it ran. She then took that search spiritual, emotional home as the theme for her debut novel, Rosewater. Join Liv now for a walk along the kent coast, as she talks about creativity, loss, grounding herself by the sea… and trying to keep her socks dry A Life More Wild is an 18Sixty production, brought to you by Canopy & Stars. The producers for this episode were Gareth Evans and Clarissa Maycock. Sound recording by Marnie Woodmeade. Our theme music is by Billie Marten.
Most of us probably feel pretty proud of ourselves if we manage to put up a shelf that's reasonably straight. So imagine how great it would feel to refurbish a lighthouse at the end of a narrow cliffside path on the Isle of Mull off the west coast of Scotland. Interior designer Banjo Beale, whom you may remember as the winner of the show Interior Design Masters, or his own programme Designing the Hebrides, knows exactly how great that felt. At least once all the heavy lifting was done. Join him on the lighthouse path on Mull, winding along past stunning views of the sea and distant misty hills. Enjoy the scenery. And remember to be thankful when the wind gets up that you're not carrying an antique apothecary cabinet. A Life More Wild is an 18Sixty production, brought to you by Canopy & Stars. The producers for this episode were Gareth Evans and Clarissa Maycock. Sound recording by Pennie Stuart. Our theme music is by Billie Marten.
Billie Marten is a British singer and songwriter who released her first single 'Ribbon' at only 14 years old. The next year she was nominated for the BBC Sound of 2016, followed quickly by her debut album 'Writing of Blue and Yellows' (2016). Her second album 'Feeding Seahorses by Hand' was released in 2019 and on the follow-up 'Flora Fauna' (2021) Marten showed a more mature version of herself. Her latest album 'Drop Cherries' (2013) continues this evolution as an artist. We spoke with Billie about clarity in songwriting, struggles with her musical identity, writing an album about a lover, touring in America, and a lot more! This time we join Nick Hayes. He's one of the most prominent voices of the campaign for the Right to Roam in England and author of The Book of Trespass. He's also an illustrator and musician who thinks that our broken relationship with nature is bound up with the loss of our cultural heritage. Join Nick on a stroll through the countryside from his boat on a quiet part of the Thames up to some sheltered hilltop woods, crossing two very differently managed estates and at least one forbidden fence line, as he explains how he's going to get arrested this summer, and what success for the Right to Roam campaign would look like. We're back for series 3 and for our first wander we're in a wooded Welsh valley with Charlotte Church. Famous since the age of 11, it's a wonder she doesn't just want to shut the whole world out and shut the whole world out and live in peace but actually she's doing the opposite. Driven by a desire to give something back and help people facing mental and emotional struggle, she's opened the Dreaming - a wellness retreat deep in the valleys of rural mid Wales. In this episode we join Charlotte amongst the woodlands and waterfalls of her retreat as she explains the journey that bought her here and what she hopes others will experience when they visit. As broadcast April 16, 2023 with plenty of hero worship to start. Tonight we open with the immortal Paul McCartney calling it quits publicly on this date in 1970, but we mainly focus on the more recent with the legendary octogenarian seemingly more relevant than ever. After that it's onto celebrating the new music just out, with highlights in hour 1 from Yaeji, Little Dragon, Billie Marten, and Emily King to taste test while they dance in the stratosphere. Part 3 sees us covering all the big tunes just out as we are Poppin Off, starting in Korea with a total sell-out tune from NewJeans and a tune from BTS's Agust D featuring IU, then we had fresh joints from Pink Sweat$ and Greta Van Fleet as well to keep the flavors varied. Part 4 our Fresh K Cuts saw joints from Chang Kiha, deulraejang, and TAEWOO being the highlights, and that's where we shut the front door.Tracklist:Part I (00:00)Paul McCartney – Find My Way Back (Beck remix)SBTRKT feat Toro y Moi – DAYS GO BYYaeji – Passed Me ByLittle Dragon – Slugs of LoveWednesday – QuarryBlondshell – Salad Part II (34:09)Billie Marten – God AboveSuperviolet – Big Songbirds Don't CryDaughter – To RageJana Horn – Days Go ByEmily King – False StartMr. Big – To Be With YouPart III (61:19)NewJeans – ZeroAgust D feat IU – People, Pt. 2Jonas Brothers – Waffle HouseJP Saxe – I Don't Miss YouPink Sweat$ - MomentsRicky Montgomery – EraserGreta Van Fleet – Meeting The Master Part IV (91:21)TAEWOO – Coffeenynas – SUGARdeulrejang – People ALEPH – T Risso – DaydreamerChang Kiha – DoKid Wine – I Cried
Billie Marten is a songwriter based in London. On her last record, Flora Fauna, Billie began to examine herself through her writing (We actually spoke about Flora Fauna back on Episode 24 of the podcast). Nearly two years later, she is out with another self-examining record: Drop Cherries. It's a tender, multifaceted observation of long-term love, vulnerability, and finding joy in the mundane. Clive Anderson and Bidisha Mamata are joined by Kathy Kiera Clarke, Nadine Shah, Gabby Best, Barnaby Jameson and Grace Savage for an eclectic mix of conversation, music and comedy. With music from Billie Marten and Grace Savage.
Ian Mudge was a teenage punk, whose exploits included chucking chairs out of a train window. He became a teacher, whose unconventional methods and connection with kids saw him rise through the ranks, becoming Headteacher of a Pupil Referral Unit - responsible for educating some of Britain's most challenging children, many with histories of violence and abuse. As he explains to Olly in this lively conversation, it was a career that required lateral thinking and exhaustive energy - but ultimately left him burned out. When Putin's army invaded Ukraine in 2022, Ian's wife suggested he should collect aid to support Ukrainian refugees… and that was all the prompt he needed to organise five trips personally delivering aid to Poland. Ian's website is https://stroudukrainesupport.com/ ____________________ Meanwhile, in the Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart - who owns a book about wood-chopping, don't you know - explores the phenomenal potential of A.I. chatbot Chat GPT. How will ‘large language models' change the way we search, write and study? How will Microsoft's investment into Open AI affect the usability of the program? And will all journalists soon be out of a job? With the help of The Economist's science correspondent, Alok Jha, Ollie has the answers. (And also thinks up some unspeakable things in the name of A.I-generated erotic literature.) _____________________ Elsewhere, in the Foxhole, Alix Fox prepares for Valentine's with some up-to-date figures on the amount of nerve endings in the clitoris. Then, she assists listener Delores, who wants to support ‘ethical porn' sites. Is it worth seeking out studios who offer safer working environments for their stars? Are free Tube sites necessarily ‘unethical'? And what about the ‘farm-to-table' models like OnlyFans? Alix has a long list of suggestions for Delores - and any wanker who wants to do the right thing… _____________________ Finally, our record of the month is ‘This Is How We Move', another laid-back charmer from Billie Marten. _____________________ This episode is sponsored by Stitch Fix, the personal styling site that sends you great clothes to try on at home.
