Shaun Taylor-Corbett seamlessly narrates the majority of this haunted novel with a masterful assist by Charley Flyte. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss a magical addition to Cynthia Leitich Smith's young adult novels. Hughie Wolfe, an avid actor, is asked to volunteer at a Halloween haunted house near the crossroads of his small Kansas town. Hughie and a group of friends have begun to learn of odd happenings and intimidating ghostly presences at the crossroads, and they start investigating to find the truth. On Halloween the haunted house and the spirits of the past collide. Hughie's thoughtful nature shines through in Taylor-Corbett's narration, and Flyte's ethereal voice shines at the story's dramatic climax. This audiobook reveals that Tommy Orange is among the most insightful novelists writing today and a poet of pain. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss this immersive novel set in Oakland that makes for a powerful listening experience. Among the segmented novel's stellar performances, Charley Flyte's reading of Victoria Bear Shield's dramatic monologue to her unborn daughter is a tour de force—a haunting performance with an expressive tone and intimate voice. Alma Cuervo portrays Jacquie Red Feather and Victoria—the unborn infant, now a grandmother—with candor, compassion, and a thoughtful pace. Gravity - The Digital Agency Power Up : Weekly shows for digital marketing agency owners.
This week on the podcast I had the pleasure of talking with *Rich Brooks*, founder of Flyte New Media ✈️ and the Agents of Change brand. Among many things Rich shared a strategic pivot in business that has not only changed the game for his agency but also for anyone looking to make their mark in the digital space.Having been in business for over 25 years, Rich stepped away from day-to-day client work to focus on what truly drives business growth: content creation, sales, and owning the stage. By building and supporting a talented team, he harnesses their expertise and elevates the entire business.
Very lucky to be joined by Will and Nick from the band Flyte. Among other things, they have some interesting insight into our Lord of the Rings / The Beatles mash up.Really lovely to speak to them both, and look forward to the coming back to react to the Rolling Stone "Top 100 Solo Beatles Songs." Don't worry, we will get there eventually.

Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss one of Emily's favorite fantasy audiobooks of 2023. Charley Flyte narrates with a self-assured tone as Anequs, a teen from Masquapaug island who bonds with a dragon egg discovered near her island. She renews her people's lost relationship with Nampeshiwe, or indigenous dragons, when she bonds with the hatchling, becoming a Nampeshiweisit (dragoneer). Listeners can hear Anequs's commitment to her cultural knowledge and traditions as she begins her studies at the mainland dragon school, where she's met with ignorance and racism. Author Moniquill Blackgoose has created a rich alternative fantasy world to explore, with Flyte making for a capable and dynamic narrator. Did you know that girls as young as 10 are walking into Sephora and buying anti-aging skincare products that are meant for our skin? "Why?" you might ask. Because they have seen their peers unboxing and using them on TikTok. So now it's trendy to buy Drunk Elephant Bronzing Drops with peptides for $34 or Dior Lip Glow Oil for $40 or even Summer Fridays Midnight Ritual Retinol Renewal Serum for $69! Yes, tweens are putting anti-aging retinols and Vitamin C's and other acids on their face because it's trendy and aspirational, but it's also hurting their skin. Why are we as middle aged women told to embrace aging and yet teens fear it? How did we get here? Elena Frankel and Carolyn Barber are the founders of Flyte.70, a beauty brand that focuses on grown-up skin. They believe life is about embracing, not fighting, change and that we are as youthful as we feel...not by the numbers on our birthday cake. They understand that no matter how many layers of full-coverage concealer or contour sticks we apply, we won't magically transform into our 20-year-old selves and that we need to be okay with that. Join Lauren, Elena and Carolyn as they discuss: what lead to this irrational fear of aging; if TikTok or parents are driving the bus; who is paying for this expensive skincare and why; how stores might deal with this (if they can) and calm the dopamine needs of our tweens and teens; how we can talk some sense into teenage girls to not buy into the hype; how teens are ruining their skin; ingredients teens needs to stay away from, and so much more. MLOps podcast #197 with Niels Bantilan, Chief Machine Learning Engineer at Union, The Role of Infrastructure in ML Leveraging Open Source brought to us by Union. // Abstract When we start out building and deploying models in a new organization, life is simple: all I need to do is grab some data, iterate on a model that fits the data well and performs reasonably well on some held-out test set. Then, if you're fortunate enough to get to the point where you want to deploy it, it's fairly straightforward to wrap it in an app framework and host it on a cloud server. However, once you get past this stage, you're likely to find yourself needing: More scalable data processing framework Experiment tracking for models Heavier duty CPU/GPU hardware Versioning tools to link models, data, code, and resource requirements Monitoring tools for tracking data and model quality There's a rich ecosystem of open-source tools that solves each of these problems and more: but how do you unify all of them together into a single view? This is where orchestration tools like Flyte can help. Flyte not only allows you to compose data and ML pipelines, but it also serves as “infrastructure as code” so that you can leverage the open-source ecosystem and unify purpose-built tools for different parts of the ML lifecycle on a single platform. ML systems are not just models: they are the models, data, and infrastructure combined. // Bio Niels is the Chief Machine Learning Engineer at Union.ai, and core maintainer of Flyte, an open-source workflow orchestration tool, author of UnionML, an MLOps framework for machine learning microservices, and creator of Pandera, a statistical typing and data testing tool for scientific data containers. His mission is to help data science and machine learning practitioners be more productive. He has a Masters in Public Health with a specialization in sociomedical science and public health informatics, and prior to that a background in developmental biology and immunology. In this captivating episode of the Explaining History podcast, we sit down with David Slattery-Christy, author of "Flyte Or Fancy," to delve into the tragic and fascinating life of aristocrat Harry Clifton. Join us as we explore the tumultuous world of Harry Clifton, a figure whose life story reads like a novel, filled with grandeur, crisis, and heartbreak. David Slattery-Christybrings to life the compelling narrative of Clifton, heir to a vast family fortune that was squandered in a lifetime. An eccentric interwar figure and an increasingly isolated and lonely man later in life, Clifton was the reluctant custodian of a fortune amassed from land ownership over several centuries. His forays into film production in Hollywood made him a target for crooks and con artists, and by his death in 1979, most of the money was gone. From his extravagant lifestyle to his lonely demise, we discuss how Clifton's story offers a unique window into the aristocratic world of his time and the declining fotunes of the British aristocracy in the 20th Century. Episode 144 Zachary 'Zack' Flyte In January, 2017, 21 year old Zachary Flyte, or Zack as he was known, was excited to embark on a new chapter in his life. He was going to take a test to get into the police academy. He felt it would be an excellent way to take care of his 3 young children. By all accounts, he was excited for the opportunity, but he would never get the chance. Days before he was supposed to take the test, his mom Jamie would get a heartbreaking phonecall that her son was in the hospital fighting for his life after being shot in the head. According to Zack's girlfriend, Dominique, Zack was at her parents home and had gotten upset over a text she got, and suddently shot himself. Zack died in the hospital after Jamie turned off life support, allowing Zack to help others via organ donation. But things began to trouble Jamie. Doctors found a laceration and bump on his head possibly indicating a struggle before he was shot. She was also concerned that it had taken well over an hour to get Zack to the hospital despite him being 10 minutes from it when he was shot. She also never got his cell phone back even though it was with him when he was shot, and as far as she knows, gun residue tests were never performed on Zack, or on Dominique. These qyestions continue to haunt Jamie. Is she on to something? Could there be more than meets the eye and police rushed to a ruling of suicide, or is she just a grieving mother, unable to accept her son's suicide? In this episode, Jamie discusses the troubling things in Zack's case, and her efforts to find out what really happened. If you or someone you care about is struggling with thoughts of suicide, there is help. Summary Data systems are inherently complex and often require integration of multiple technologies. Orchestrators are centralized utilities that control the execution and sequencing of interdependent operations. This offers a single location for managing visibility and error handling so that data platform engineers can manage complexity. In this episode Nick Schrock, creator of Dagster, shares his perspective on the state of data orchestration technology and its application to help inform its implementation in your environment. Announcements Hello and welcome to the Data Engineering Podcast, the show about modern data management Introducing RudderStack Profiles. RudderStack Profiles takes the SaaS guesswork and SQL grunt work out of building complete customer profiles so you can quickly ship actionable, enriched data to every downstream team. You specify the customer traits, then Profiles runs the joins and computations for you to create complete customer profiles. Get all of the details and try the new product today at dataengineeringpodcast.com/rudderstack (https://www.dataengineeringpodcast.com/rudderstack) This episode is brought to you by Datafold – a testing automation platform for data engineers that finds data quality issues before the code and data are deployed to production. Datafold leverages data-diffing to compare production and development environments and column-level lineage to show you the exact impact of every code change on data, metrics, and BI tools, keeping your team productive and stakeholders happy. Datafold integrates with dbt, the modern data stack, and seamlessly plugs in your data CI for team-wide and automated testing. If you are migrating to a modern data stack, Datafold can also help you automate data and code validation to speed up the migration. Learn more about Datafold by visiting dataengineeringpodcast.com/datafold (https://www.dataengineeringpodcast.com/datafold) You shouldn't have to throw away the database to build with fast-changing data. You should be able to keep the familiarity of SQL and the proven architecture of cloud warehouses, but swap the decades-old batch computation model for an efficient incremental engine to get complex queries that are always up-to-date. With Materialize, you can! It's the only true SQL streaming database built from the ground up to meet the needs of modern data products. Whether it's real-time dashboarding and analytics, personalization and segmentation or automation and alerting, Materialize gives you the ability to work with fresh, correct, and scalable results — all in a familiar SQL interface. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm welcoming back Nick Schrock to talk about the state of the ecosystem for data orchestration Interview Introduction How did you get involved in the area of data management? Can you start by defining what data orchestration is and how it differs from other types of orchestration systems? (e.g. container orchestration, generalized workflow orchestration, etc.) What are the misconceptions about the applications of/need for/cost to implement data orchestration? How do those challenges of customer education change across roles/personas? Because of the multi-faceted nature of data in an organization, how does that influence the capabilities and interfaces that are needed in an orchestration engine? You have been working on Dagster for five years now. How have the requirements/adoption/application for orchestrators changed in that time? One of the challenges for any orchestration engine is to balance the need for robust and extensible core capabilities with a rich suite of integrations to the broader data ecosystem. What are the factors that you have seen make the most influence in driving adoption of a given engine? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen data orchestration implemented and/or used? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on data orchestration? When is a data orchestrator the wrong choice? What do you have planned for the future of orchestration with Dagster? Contact Info @schrockn (https://twitter.com/schrockn) on Twitter LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/schrockn) Parting Question From your perspective, what is the biggest gap in the tooling or technology for data management today?
