National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company responsible for delivering the Government's National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that over 400,000 homes, farms and businesses in the State's Intervention Area can now connect to high-speed broadband.?This follows a decision earlier this year to accelerate delivery to an additional 65,000 homes, farms and businesses, bringing forward access to high-speed broadband for communities across rural Ireland. NBI has achieved the milestone ahead of schedule, meaning the company is now on course to surpass its 2025 target of 420,000 premises passed. When a premises is passed, an order can be placed to connect to high-speed fibre broadband on the NBI Network. People living and working in rural Ireland can enter their Eircode on the NBI website, www.nbi.ie, to see if their home or business is included in the rollout and how to get connected. With more than 50 broadband providers actively selling on NBI's open-access network, rural communities now have access to the same level of competition and choice as those in urban areas. Customers can select from a wide range of internet providers, with competitive pricing and bundled packages available nationwide. The rollout is already delivering meaningful impact with over 140,000 premises already connected. Take-up rates average 35% and continue to climb, approaching 60% in areas where the network has been live the longest, such as the rural areas near Athlone, Castlebar and Emyvale. Fibre broadband is also available to order on 19 islands, including Achill Islan,d where the first homes and businesses began connecting in June. Independent research continues to highlight the real-world impact of the National Broadband Plan such as improved quality of life and better access to essential services as well as stronger digital capacity for rural businesses. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, T.D. said: "The advent of rural broadband has been truly transformative, not only bridging the digital divide, but also breathing new life into once isolated communities. Even the most remote parts of our country now have the opportunity to sustain local businesses, educate their children, and preserve a way of life in a modern, connected world." "National Broadband Ireland is playing an instrumental role in delivering one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the history of the State. Great credit is due to NBI, its leadership, contractors, and the men and women on the ground who are making this happen. They are ensuring that every home, farm and business, no matter how remote, has access to the kind of connectivity that levels the playing field and unlocks opportunity for all." TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "Passing 400,000 premises marks another major step forward in the delivery of the National Broadband Plan. Every week, thousands more premises are being made ready for service, and the level of interest and demand we're seeing is remarkable. As the rollout progresses, the full potential of a connected rural Ireland is becoming increasingly clear. "This progress reflects the tireless work of our build partners, engineering teams and broadband providers across the country. It also wouldn't be possible without the support and leadership of the Government, which has made a long-term commitment to connecting every part of Ireland and ensuring no one is left behind in the digital age." There are currently 564,000 premises included in the NBP Intervention Area, up from 537,000 premises at the time of contract award. Progress update as of 20.08.2025: The number of premises passed, and which can connect to NBI's fibre network, is 400,147. 140,592 premises are already connected. The average take-rate is 35%. Take-up is approaching 60% where services have been available for longer. 100% of surveying works are complete, and all remaining premises are now in the construction phase. 95...

National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the National Broadband Plan (NBP) has today (Wednesday) hosted an event on Achill Island to mark the first connections to high-speed fibre broadband on the remote island Main build works on the island infrastructure are now complete enabling over 2,500 homes, farms and businesses to high-speed broadband. This means that residents of Ireland's largest island will have the same access to 2 Gig, reliable, broadband as any of the over 380,000 premises that NBI has already passed across the country. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, T.D., was present at the event which included local public representatives, community groups and residents from the island. Minister O'Donovan said: "The National Broadband Plan is one of the largest State infrastructure projects since rural electrification, and ensures that no community, home or business is left behind from a connectivity point of view. This means that delivering broadband infrastructure to the residents of Achill Island is a natural extension of this mandate. "I'm delighted to be here today to witness first-hand the impact that this investment and connectivity to high-speed broadband is having for homes, businesses and the entire island community who will reap the benefits of it for decades to come." David McCourt, Founder and Chairman of National Broadband Ireland, commented: "At NBI, we are working to the mandate from Government to ensure that no town, village, or community will be left behind under the National Broadband Plan. No premises is too rural or too remote and we're proud to be here on Achill Island - one of 27 offshore islands in our rollout - to mark the availability of our world-class fibre network." TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "The delivery of fibre broadband infrastructure to Achill Island is a significant milestone for NBI, and we are delighted to have end customers already connected and enjoying the benefits of reliable, high-speed broadband. "Fibre broadband is the gold standard for fast, reliable internet - and thanks to the National Broadband Plan, many homes and businesses across Ireland can already make the switch today. By switching to fibre, users can leave behind the limitations of outdated copper networks, which were never designed to meet the demands of today's digital world." Local connected customer and owner of House of Achill, Anna Sutcliffe, said: "Since connecting to the NBI Network with Imagine, my business has really grown. Traditionally on the island, we are very dependent on the tourism season. Now with fibre, I finally have a fast, reliable connection to support online sales and ensure customer service year-round. I can now focus on what I enjoy most about the business: being creative." Glenda Brady, Commercial Director, Imagine, said:"At Imagine, our roots have always been in rural Ireland and in serving communities like Achill. This is a moment we're really proud of. Fibre connectivity will allow business owners, like Anna, succeed in a much bigger digitally connected market, no matter where they are based." Local connected customer and owner of Lilí Bán Café, John Barrett, said: "I opened Lilí Bán Café in the summer of 2021 and soon realised that running a business on Achill Island has its challenges. Without fibre broadband, the weather often impacted the signal and reliability of the connection. Since connecting to NBI's fibre with Westnet, it's been a real game changer. At the café, we can now manage online bookings and operate a card machine. It's exciting to see a new wave of business starting on the island and fibre connectivity has definitely played a big part in this." Just over 1,600 Clare homes, businesses and farms near Labasheeda will be able to connect to fibre broadband on National Broadband Ireland's (NBI) network by early autumn. These homes, farms, and businesses are among 32,000 premises across Ireland that have been brought forward from 2026 to 2025 in National Broadband Ireland's delivery schedule.
