Delve into the fierce debate over abortion rights in the U.S. and how recent measures could alter the course of reproductive freedom. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: The 2022 Supreme Court ruling to overturn Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health dramatically changed the political scene. Still, just two years on, we are witnessing another watershed moment in the struggle for abortion rights. This Election Day, 10 states will vote on whether to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution. Since 2022, every ballot measure to protect abortion rights has passed while every measure to restrict or weaken those rights has failed. Meanwhile, extremist Republicans are pushing for a total national abortion ban and seem to have Trump on their side. He told Fox News just days ago that a national abortion ban is “off the table,” but “we'll see what happens.” Joining us to share what's at stake and what can be done are Nadine Smith, the director of Equality Florida who heads the state's largest organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Heidi L. Sieck is a Political Strategist & Founder of VOTEPROCHOICE that focuses on reproductive freedom at the state and local levels. And Renee Bracey Sherman, a reproductive justice advocate is the co-author of the just-released book, “LIBERATING ABORTION: Claiming Our History, Sharing Our Stories, and Building the Reproductive Future We Deserve.” Together they unpack how abortion, access to trans health, contraception and freedom from sterilization abuse are all part of the far Right's agenda to control bodies. Could reproductive rights leap forward in 2024, not back? Plus a commentary from Laura.“. . . Just last month we had the Gender Liberation March in DC . . . We had a tent for banned books because as they're banning sex ed, as they're banning trans youth healthcare, trans healthcare and abortion, they're also banning books . . . It's the same people. They're just fighting about a different thing on a different day. And so when we come together, we'll be able to stand against them.” - Renee Bracey Sherman“We have to remember that this is an infrastructure investment issue . . . For decades, the money on the anti-choice side has been going to investments in these local infrastructure. We don't operate like that on the progressive and political Democratic side. Most of our investments are going into the federal infrastructure, and that is the problem.” - Heidi L. Sieck“The governor in Florida has been so extreme. He has sent investigators to people's homes for signing the petition that got the constitutional amendment on the ballot that would restore access to abortion in Florida . . . He's threatening television stations that run ads that are in support of the abortion ballot measure.” - Nadine SmithGuests:• Renee Bracey Sherman: Co-Author Liberating Abortion; Founder & Co-Executive Director, WeTestify• Heidi L. Join us to discover how Jubilee Justice helps repair the damage from long-term racism and plant the seeds for a healthful and healing future.“Restorative economics calls on us to first acknowledge the hurt and structural harm caused by economic systems of extraction and exploitation. It then requires us to engage in a conversation about repair.” - Nwamaka Agbo“My goal is to not just grow organically and to be regenerative . . . but to do it in a way that's affordable so that everybody has access. Everybody has a right to good, nutritious food.” - Donna Isaac“How can we balance all of the farming principles that we want to hold on to? How can we build soil health? How can we have a productive mill? . . . That's the mission.” - Myles Gaines“As Black farmers, we rarely own the land . . . And we are completely dependent upon a third party to say yes to my crop . . . What that mill represents is a vertical integration of their crop from growing it to milling it, to distributing it, and making their own decisions . . . We have to own the means of production.” - Konda Mason“. . . It's not just the big guys who can come in and grow rice where it's not even healthy and feed it to all of us . . . We can pick our area, we can do it right, we can show care and love for each other, and that comes out in the food we provide.” - Shirley Sherrod“We as a cohort have the deeds to this [rice mill]. It's going to be ours. If all else fails, we still have a building for people to come to, that they need . . . This building here is a stronghold for me and my heart.” - Bernard Winn“Farmers are aging and their kids don't want to take [the farmland] over. So that land's going to go somewhere. Is it going to go to developers or is it going to go to people who care passionately about changing how the food that we eat is grown, for the betterment of society?” - Ken Lee“. . . If you take care of the soil and if you farm regeneratively, you are going to not only get a better crop . . . but it's going to be more nutritious for the consumer and better for the environment. Regenerative is the future and we're totally committed to it.” - Caryl LevineGuests:Nwamaka Agbo: CEO, Kataly Foundation & Managing Director, Restorative Economies FundDonna Isaac: Farmer, Jubilee Justice Black Farmers Rice ProjectMyles Gaines: Head of Innovation & Experimentation, Jubilee Justice Black Farmers Rice ProjectKonda Mason: Founder & President, Jubilee JusticeShirley Sherrod: Executive Director, Southwest Georgia Project for Community Education; Co-Founder, New Communities, Inc.; U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Equity CommissionBernard Winn: Operations Specialist & Mill Manager, Jubilee Justice Black Farmers Rice ProjectCaryl Levine and Ken Lee: Co-Founders & Co-CEOs, Lotus Foods; Partners with Jubilee Justice Black Farmers' Rice Project Full Episode Notes are located HERE. Two superb live performers join me this week. Jazz star Zara McFarlane explains the stories and Jamaican folk rhythms behind her fabulous new album Songs of an Unknown Tongue and tells me of her obsessions for watching true crime and matchmaking shows. Comedian and podcaster Ian Stone talks about his debut book To Be Someone, about his teenage obsession with Paul Weller and The Jam. He also admits to being scared of I May Destroy You, in awe of Better Call Saul and in love with Jojo Rabbit.Zara McFarlane:Manhunt: Unabomber (12.23)Indian Matchmaking (12.46)Ian Stone:I May Destroy You (26.24)Jojo Rabbit (28.36)Music by Lee Rosevere See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Listen to sisters Ella and Amy. They're behind Kids Against Plastic and talk to us about the world's reliance on plastic, especially single use plastic, and the way we just dump it. On Wednesday they're part of the online climate change forum called ‘Race Against Climate Change’. We go to Ireland to hear about a tampon TV ad which has caused a stir, so much so it's been taken off air. Some people have been offended by it due to its straightforward description of how you use them. Two Irish women defend the ad. They're Alexandra Ryan and Ciara Kelly. After Ireland we go to India to learn about a petition which urges the Indian Prime Minister to encourage men to do their fair share of housework. So far the petition has 70,000 signatures. And we go to the jazz and soul singer, Zara McFarlane who talks about her album Songs of An Unknown Tongue. She says that her latest single called Black Treasure is a "declaration, proclamation and celebration of black Britishness and womanhood."

In this episode we're taking a slow news day to indulge in cutting loose and playing the role of the radio DJ, freeform style. Spinning some tunes, weaving a mood, paying tribute to a few who have left us and, if we're lucky, turning listeners on to something new. On cue we have Karl Denson doing the Beastie Boys. Jack Bruce as a muse for the Artifacts. Hats off to Doris Day and Ramon Morris. The Left/West Coast past and present. Nu-skool duo Binker and Moses chime in with a good word. Nora Dean and Zara McFarlane take us from Kingston to London with a masterful musical makeover. Plus, the Bad Plus, Art Blakey, Young-Holt and more. Headphones on! We had the chance to meet British drummer and producer Moses Boyd to talk about his new groundbreaking album "Dark Matter". Yes another English speaking podcast, because we're also called Hemisphere Sound for a reason. This time, our discussion led us from Moses' approach of the ever-evolving "UK sound" to his love for the "thick and thumpy" basslines on Fabric's iconic soundsystem. He also explained his spiritual relationship with his mentor Gary Crosby, the man behind the defining music program Tomorrow's Warriors. This music education program is now recognized as the main source for a major part of the current "UK scene", with former members including Nubya Garcia, Soweto Kinch or Zara McFarlane. The rest of the show including our interview with Chicagoan trumpeter and International Anthem affiliate Jaimie Branch will be online soon! Thanks for sharing and enjoying the journey with us, the best is yet to come. Interview by Claire Le Gac and Sylvain Pinot, editing by Sylvain Pinot

Once again, I bring forth superb house music that currently moves me to better and brighter places. In this session, I try to keep a laid back and relaxed vibe (for the most part). You will experience some old school disco-funk flavors that have been updated to fit today’s sound. I begin the set with Knee Deep featuring Cathy Battistess, “All About Love” – this is simply a brilliant vocal. Later on in the set, I had to run the Lovebirds Suite Instrumental. I’m sure everyone will enjoy. Other highlights: I didn’t realize when I was mixing but I have featured a lot of tracks either produced or remixed by Knee Deep. Then there is the Motooo Project, “Give Me Love” – I’ve been trying to include this into a show for a while and here it is! Later, you'll find material from Jeremy Sylvester, who has a killer tracked titled “So Addicted” – Major! I finish up with some classics – Jaydee’s “Plastic Dreams” – I always enjoy David Morales remixes. Then I progress into Kim English’s “Nite Life” – This record just sums up my life.
