This is a collection of tribal ambient tunes. Think frame drums and synth washes. Think Steve Roach & Robert Rich - "Strata." Think Byron Metcalf. There's really not much else to say, if you like the sounds mentioned above, you'll enjoy this mix. Cheers! This month's 101 Dimensions program (curated by your friendly neighborhood Prog-Squatch) features great progressive, electronic, and ambient music from Enigmatic Sound Machines, Bart Hawkins, Frore, Craig Padilla & Marvin Allen, Klaus Schulze, Ashra, and Sverre Knut Johansen!
The primal sound of prehistoric hand drums, brought to the present by space-defining ambient electronics. In the 1980s, elements of ancient indigenous music were embraced by electronic musicians searching for an earthy, vital sound to balance the dematerialized tones of electronic instruments, ground the atmospheric soundscapes of ambient, and gain the power of ritual experience. The new genre was originally called "Techno-Tribal," but as the Techno label became associated with electronic dance music, it was renamed "Tribal Ambient." Today, the period of discovery is long past, but a dedicated group of electro-acoustic artists with a taste for rhythm-powered trance continue to explore the sound and release new music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another ethno-tronic journey on psychoactive rhythms, on a program called TRIBAL AMBIENT 2. Music is by STEVE ROACH & ROBERT RICH, BYRON METCALF + ARI URBAN & MARK SEELIG, FRORE & SHANE MORRIS, SERENA GABRIEL, SOLITAIRE, and STEVE ROACH solo. Frore is an adjective that means frozen or frosty. Coming directly from Middle English, our word of the day has been with us since the 14th century. The frore fields of western Michigan are where I learned to play football. There's no better place to develop speed because when it's cold outside, you want to get inside very quickly.
This month's first edition will be our last podcast featuring a full lineup of different musicians, with the finale for this year just before the Christmas holiday, another special on a well-respected band and their various solo and other projects. We are back with a more upbeat selection here, including melodic sequential music and several Berlin School-influenced tracks. Only one new name, B. Ashra, to add to the roster of the thousands of musicians/bands we've introduced over more than 30 years. We include two of his recent albums, which span ambient music's dark & light side with meditational & ritual overtones. Talking of dark ambient, Vidna Obmana's Dante Trilogy is a collection of his early 2000 albums Tremor Spore & Legacy. Kamarius, with his ritual, mystical sound, relaxing and enigmatic atmospheres. Pioneers of French electro, Space Art with ‘Personal Duty', mastered by the legendary Michel Geiss and Dutch musician Remy's most conceptual project, including a ten-piece choir. Steve Hillman has been in this scene with sequential and progressive electronics for 40 years. We've included his latest ‘Sunsets Of Summers Past' converging on the prog rock side. Ben Prunty, Kyle Preston, The Eight, Julia Kent, Erik Wøllo, Ash Ra Tempel, Manuel Göttsching, Piotr Wiese, NuvolutioN, Operentzia, Sébastien Guérive, Bleaklow, Christopher Larkin, Frore & Shane Morris. Frore, Jackson Frost, Adrián Berenguer, Edouard Ferlet, Ash Ra Tempel, Rémi Orts Project, David Cañas del Mazo, Robert Rich, Luca Fomentini, Stanislav Barantsov, The Midnight, Justin Hurwitz. It doesn't take much: a quiet drone, soft skin drums, and hand claps in this case — but it opens up an immersive perceptual world that's encoded in the word "trance." Trance music has a surprisingly long provenance, stretching back from the electronic beats of today to the mists of prehistory. Whether fueled by psychoactive substances, ecstatic group experiences, or just applied boredom, the world of trance music has proven both durable and adaptable. There's acid trance, epic trance, euro-trance, tech and progressive trance, vocal trance, and dream trance — just to mention the electronic dance variations. From the traditional acoustic drumming of North Africa/ to the relentless pounding of 140 beats per minute on the electronic dance floor, repetition and the power of extended, slowly changing rhythms are the foundation. Add infinite feedback guitar and Ambient electronics, and you have a sonic vehicle for travel to exotic virtual spaces. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an ethno-tronic journey on psycho-active trance rhythms, on a program called TRANCE PLANET. If the name sounds familiar, it was used in the 1990s for a series of World Music compilations on the late Triloka Records label. Music is by TIM GERWING, FRORE & SHANE MORRIS, MICHEL BANABILA, ROBERT RICH, JON HASSELL, MA JA LE & VIR UNIS, and STILLPOINT. It's not all that often that a new strain of popular electronic music arrives in the culture fully formed, but it happened in 1988 in the wake of STEVE ROACH's ground-breaking album DREAMTIME RETURN. Like Stravinsky 75 years earlier with The Rite of Spring, Roach realized that electronic music needed a dose of primitive energy and physicality — and he found it in the trance-inducing music of the aboriginal tribes of Australia. The new genre was called "Techno-Tribal" and it combined electronic atmospheres with primitive rattles, drums, rocks, and the aboriginal didgeridoo. If our current political tribalism is an index of popularity, tribal music should be all the rage. But most electronic artists are urban, and have been influenced by Electronic Dance Music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, ethnotronic atmospheres meet trance percussion, on a program called TRIBAL AMBIENT. Music is by STEVE ROACH, BYRON METCALF & JENNIFER GRAIS, INLAKESH, FRORE & SHANE MORRIS, JOHN VORUS, D LOOP and KEVIN BRAHENY FORTUNE. Here at Sequences we continue to bring you some of the best new music found in the EM scene..Again having a healthy balance of electronics from the more melodic uptempo style to atmospheric ambient stuff, some erring on the experimental side, but still accessible. Included in this latest edition we have Andy Pickford’s marathon release Pareidolia, clocking in at over three & half hours, more sequential melodies from Jeffrey Koepper on Transmitter,, French composer Alpha Lyra emotional cosmic trip on Ultime atome, from the dark side, Approaching Dark Space by Phobos and the mighty melodies of Johan Tronestam on Luther, with many more outstanding sublime musical journeys to savour. Vintage track comes from Pillion’s 1980 Enigmas album, sourced from a original vinyl LP which was never released on CD, because their master tapes and the remaining albums were destroyed in a fire at their record company. It’s the Australian way, g’day possums, welcome to Sequences, lots of new tracks for you to hear, a cracking set of truly gifted musicians, many again appearing here for the first time, plus some of our regulars, who always come up with some outstanding music as well. In this new year we had another 300 fans join our group, from places all over the world, even from those troubled places like Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Ukraine, Palestine, Nigeria so on, using the social media as way to hear music from the rest of the world, in some cases under severe restrictions in their countries, Before we get the show on the road, we have included the last two tracks from the elusive mysterious Canadian musician Henric’s 5 track promo cassette that arrived in the 90’s, surprisingly with a bit of help from modern technology, Dolby C recorded tape and a good ear, has come up sounding pretty fine. Coincidently, we kick off with one of our favourite Canadian musicians, going under the name of Sequential Dreams, from his latest album Legacy. Take it away Ron.
