Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I want to dedicate this composition to my grandfather - Anatoliy Mytianskyi. He was a passionate tourist and loved Berlin school of electronic music very much. He actually was at Svaneti in the 1970s and made some beautiful photos of this place.  As a kid I remember looking at this old photos, admiring the towers of Svaneti and mountains around them while my grandfather was listening to some epic instrumental pieces by Klaus Schulze.   "So when I saw this sound in the database and heard it - it was a miraculous little moment of recognition and delight, as I felt like I've already been there. And I really love bell sounds! "Happy accidents continued, as at this time I had a rather unique modular system in my hands. It's called UkrRack and made entirely of Eurorack modules made in Ukraine. So I've created a patch and walked to the rhythm of sequencer until it felt right. Then recorded an improvisation with it and it determined the structure, harmonic movements and hence the mood of this composition. "Original recording is everywhere here - in the sequence itself (captured and repitched), as ambient bed, as percussion elements. Sometimes blurred, sometimes immediately recognisable, phasing in and out like a distant but potent memory. And the name of the track is an hommage to Ash Ra Tempel - krautrock band originally created by Manuel Göttsching, Hartmut Enke and Klaus Schulze. "My grandfather never understood the technical side of my sonic endeavours but always loved how it sounded. And he would've liked this one in particular. But unfortunately he passed away almost a year ago. "I don't believe in afterlife of any kind. But I believe that our loved ones, places we've been and all of the impressions of them will continue to live as memories and could always be passed to future generations.  "Especially as sound and music." Upper Svaneti bells reimagined by Vlad Suppish. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. THE ARRIVAL OF PRACTICAL ELECTRONIC SYNTHESIZERS in the late 1960s and early 1970s caused a sensation around the world, but nowhere more than Germany. Postwar German artists were restless, intent on leaving behind all forms of traditional German music, as well as the Rhythm & Blues roots and song structure of popular Anglo-American rock. An innocent feature of early modular synthesizers called a “step sequencer” provided a tool that led to the development of an original style called “Kosmische Musik” or "Cosmic Music" in Germany, and—more playfully—“KrautRock.” The step sequencer made it easy to create hypnotic rhythm loops with up to 32 notes or steps, set a tempo, and mix them over flowing electronic drones. The effect was to “float” the listener through endless terrestrial or cosmic space: it was addictive. Seminal groups and individuals like CAN, KLAUS SCHULZE, TANGERINE DREAM, KRAFTWERK, CLUSTER, ASH RA TEMPEL, HARMONIA and others, created an enduring style that has influenced genres from Minimalism, Ambient and Electronic Dance Music, to New Age and Techno. Today we call it the "Berlin School." On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another timeless flight on electronic rhythms, on a program called SEQUENCER AIRLINES. Music is by ALPHA WAVE MOVEMENT, STATE AZURE, STEVE HAUSCHILDT, STARTERRA, MARTIN STURTZER, SYNTH REPLICANTS, STRAY THEORIES, NILS FRAHM, and EDGAR FROESE. On this episode, Marc talks to Marshall Gu, author of “Krautrock,” published on November of 2023. Part of the 33.3 "Genre" series, it's a look at Krautrock through chapter-length examinations of 12 individual groups: Can, Faust, Cluster & Harmonia, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Agitation Free, Guru Guru, Popol Vuh, Amon Duul II, Embryo, NEU!, and Kraftwerk. Along the way Marshall points out commonalities between these groups without boxing them into strict genre rules. As he writes in his introduction, “What does Krautrock actually sound like? It can sound the most unrelenting psychedelia you've ever heard. It can sound like the most hypnotic grooves found in rock music. It can sound like jazz, like junk, like pure noise, or like peaceful ambient music. It can sound like nothing you've ever heard before, which was certainly the original mission statement of many of its practitioners.”We hope you enjoy Marc's chat with Marshall Gu!

Entre ellos, “New Age of Earth” (1976), “Blackouts “(1977) y “Belle Alliance” (1980).

I have been a casual fan of Manuel Gottsching for a long time but I never really dug into his discography until the last few days with the news of his passing. I don't have time to write much about him so I'll cut & paste a few things from Pitchfork. "Manuel Gottsching, the Ash Ra Tempel bandleader who went on to compose the electronic cornerstone album E2-E4, died last Sunday (December 4). Göttsching made his name in the West Berlin underground scene in the late 1960s and early '70s. He was a core member of Ash Ra Tempel, a krautrock linchpin with revolving members including Tangerine Dream's Klaus Schulze. The loose, shapeshifting outfit released five influential albums between 1971 and 1973. Göttsching's solo debut, 1975's Inventions for Electric Guitar, was subtitled Ash Ra Tempel VI; from then on he mostly produced records under his own name or as Ashra, such as the 1976 classic New Age of Earth. In 1981, after a visit to Schulze, Göttsching improvised the composition that became known as E2-E4, hoping to throw together some listening material for an imminent trip. That mysteriously perfect hourlong exercise, which combined Prophet 10 synth pulses with waves of electronic percussion and electric guitar, came to define his post-krautrock output. After composing the track, Göttsching later recalled, the billionaire and Virgin Records owner Richard Branson invited him to his houseboat and, upon hearing the track, advised Göttsching that it could make him a fortune. But Göttsching decided to release the full improvisation on his friend Schulze's label, without overdubs, in 1984, and it appeared to have little impact. Though E2-E4 sold poorly, it had—unbeknownst to Göttsching—made its way across the Atlantic and into Larry Levan's Paradise Garage sets, as well as the collections of key electronic music innovators. As Pitchfork's Mark Richardson wrote in a 2016 review, the improvisation “wound its way across the world, morphing and changing with formats and remixes, finding new contexts, a music that is constantly in the process of becoming.” It was a nice trip through Gottsching's music making this mix. I hope he is improvising with his buddy Klaus somewhere.

We have lost two of the most influential composers in the electronic music scene in just over three weeks. Klaus Schulze & Vangelis both had music careers spanning over 50 years. I had the privilege of seeing both musicians performing, only once for Vangelis at the Royal Albert Hall in 1976, supporting his first album for RCA, Heaven & Hell. Klaus Schulze as many of you know was a member of Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel & Cosmic Jokers before departing on a solo career with a prolific output of over 100 albums. Greek composer Vangelis was best known for his epic soundtracks to Blade Runner, Chariots Of Fire & more, renowned for harnessing experimental electronic sounds from Avante -Garde to Symphonic, a "one man quasi-classical orchestra" composing and performing on the first take. As we take our journey into this latest edition, let's reflect with sadness on the power & majestic sounds these two incredible musicians have given us over many decades., R.I.P. It's been more than 30 years since the German genius for music and technology encountered psychoactive chemistry at the end of the 1960s. The rest, as they say, is history; but when that history is finally written, the name of one musician will dominate the tale. KLAUS SCHULZE was there from the very beginning, starting as a drummer in a psychedelic rock group, then embracing electronics when the first synthesizers arrived in Germany. He was a member of both of the seminal German electronic groups — Ash Ra Tempel and Tangerine Dream, then headed off on his own — thereby inventing the identity of the solo electronic musician, working in his personal studio to create original music. Perhaps more than any single composer, he developed a musical language for electronic spacemusic that's become so pervasive and influential, it's now part of the environment. And since the early 1970s, his music has been one of the foundations of the sound of this program. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we bring our long love affair with the music of Klaus Schulze up to date on a program called KLAUS SCHULZE : CONTEMPORARY WORKS. Long careers in popular music are rare; long and prolific careers are exceptional. But the output of Klaus Schulze has been so extraordinary that even his most dedicated fans are often overwhelmed. By 2001, his discography included 35 solo albums, some 36 collaborations, and a group of monumental retrospective box sets, ranging from 10 to 50 albums each. The new millennium did not diminish his creativity. In 2000, he released a new 10 CD set called CONTEMPORARY WORKS I, and followed it up in 2002 with a 5 disc set called CONTEMPORARY WORKS II. As you can see, the problem in bringing you Klaus Schulze is not...

Today's guest deejay is Sean Conrad. I met Sean through Steve Targo (listen to his mix for Soundwave here). I asked Steve who he thought would share a mix on Soundwave, and he recommended Sean, who runs the Inner Islands music label. I spent an afternoon listening to some of the music from Sean's label. Wonderful stuff! I sent out an invitation to guest deejay on Soundwave, toot suite. Sean also records under under the names Ashan and Channelers, and is in the duo Skyminds with Michael Henning. On today's show, Sean showcases select tracks from his recordings as Channelers. Sean has words about today's mix below. This week electronic music pioneer Klaus Schulze died. Klaus was a member of the Krautrock bands Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and The Cosmic Jokers. Klaus released more than 60 albums in sixty years during his solo career. Last year I invited Klaus to guest deejay on Soundwave. It saddens me that Klaus was unable to appear on the show. I would have loved to have heard what music he finds essential. But we will always have Klaus's music to experience and enjoy. You can listen to a 7+ hour mix of Klaus's music on Spotify. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Andrew Tasslemyer. See you then. The following pieces trace my (mostly) acoustic work as Channelers recorded on 8-track tape over the last six years. The pieces revolve around long live takes, minimal to no editing, and compositions that range from fully worked out to fully improvised, with most resting somewhere in between. This is in contrast to my electronic albums as Channelers, which have heavily relied on editing, loops, effects, and generally more post-production than playing. As the years go by, the tape pieces remain closer to my heart. There is a certain spaciousness and spirit to them that I still resonate with. They are more indicative of how I would like to carry on with the Channelers' work. Channelers "In The Garden Of Venus" Channelers "Moving Through My Second Self" Channelers "Praise For Life In All Its Forms" Channelers "Life Living Through" Channelers "Dissolving Image" Channelers "Pressure Sigh"

This is a re-posting of sorts. I was going through old mixes trying to figure out which ones had not been posted to Mixcloud. I plan on posting some of those old mixes as-is to Mixcloud in the coming months.  One of the mixes I dug up is Sequential Circuits, originally posted 12 years ago. Yikes! I've been doing this for a long time. I really like this mix but while listening to it I decided to give it one little tweak. I dropped two tracks by Detroit Escalator Co. & Geometric Farms and replaced them with a cut from Ash Ra Tempel called "Slightly Delayed." My favorite tunes in this mix are the Richard Pinhas tracks, "Sundial" from Steve Roach * "Hyperborea" by Tangerine Dream. I've been rediscovering Hyperborea lately and I think it's one of my top three TD albums. All this berlin school music has got me thinking about doing another sequencer mix using classic tunes like this one. I hope you enjoy this resurrected mix. Cheers! Wild City's 159th mix might be the most cohesive one yet. It sounds less like a mix than the soundtrack to an imaginary, otherwise silent sci-fi film. In many ways, it's like an aural film on its own, a sonic journey with a thrilling, intriguing narrative directed by Varun Desai aka Yidam. The Kolkata-based artist, who makes different kinds of music under multiple monikers – 5Volts, Yidam and VvvvV – achieves a transcendental quality with this seamless mix, melting one track into another without revealing the slightest clue. Were this not explicitly defined as a mix, with a tracklist, it might beguile you into thinking it's a single track, or a singular concept album. Yidam effortlessly (so it seems, though we reckon it comes from careful, precise deliberation and effort) stitches together an interstellar soundtrack, using his own, original tracks and borrowing from ambient music stalwarts like Mat Jarvis' High Skies, Ash Ra Tempel, and the cult ambient classics, The Orb. To even call this mix a soundtrack is unfair, for that implies a reliance on complementary material to create a whole experience. Yidam's storytelling, however, is so visual and cinematic, that all you need to do is close your eyes, phase out for an hour, and let the rich narrative, the drama and the dreamstates of the cosmos consume you and take you to the outer reaches of the universe and your mind. In 1968 The Beatles had been here attending an advanced Transcendental Meditation training session with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. As we explored the site we found small Deep Meditation caves and realised that this was where the Beatles wrote their acid opus, the White Album. Here on the banks of the Ganga, we had crossed a powerful psychedelic ley line."

An epic from Ash Ra Tempel transitions the set into a meditative, cosmic space with songs from Laraaji, Mary Lattimore, and more. Artist/Song/Release/Year 01. West Germany after World War II was a country in shock: estranged from its recent history, and adrift from the rest of Europe. But this orphaned landscape proved fertile ground for a generation of musicians who, from the 1960s onwards, would develop the strange and beautiful sounds that became known as Krautrock. Eschewing the easy pleasures of rock and roll and the more substantive seductions of blues and jazz, they took their inspiration from elsewhere: the mysticism of the East; the fractured classicism of Stockhausen; the grinding repetition of industry; the dense forests of the Rhineland; the endless winding of Autobahns. Kraftwerk, Neu!, Faust, Cluster, Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Düül II, Can—the influence of these groups’ music on Western popular music is incalculable. They were key to the development of movements ranging from post-punk to electronica and hip-hop and have directly inspired artists as diverse as David Bowie, Talking Heads, and LCD Soundsystem. Future Days is the brilliantly reported, deeply researched story of the groups that created Krautrock, and a social and cultural history of the Germany that challenged, inspired, and repelled them. David Stubbs is an author and music journalist whose work has appeared in the The Times (London), The Sunday Times, Spin, The Guardian and GQ, and his books include Fear of Music: Why People Get Rothko but Don’t Get Stockhausen. The interview with David Stubbs was originally recorded on October 8, 2015.

My once-a-month curatorship of a new Progzilla.com show called 101 Dimensions begins! This show features progressive electronic and ambient music and no talking. In keeping with the season, I have programmed a journey that begins as a joy ride, but later takes a decidedly...darker turn. For those of you who would like to track the progress of our journey, I give you the “road map” below.(PS. I cannot be held responsible for the occasional nightmare, should anyone happen to fall asleep while listening to any of the later tracks with headphones.)Enjoy!Your “road map”:1.
