POPULARITY
At its core, Ambient is a sensibility — a way of perceiving or sensing the world around us. As a sensibility, it gives us a heightened awareness of our physical and cultural surroundings; as a contemporary music genre, the name may be new, but the music has old, even ancient roots, arising from the discovery that slow tempos, repeated patterns, hypnotic rhythms, and resonant enclosures can alter our sense of time, and transform our experience of space. The 20th century saw the invention of electronic music, along with technical advances in communication, travel, sound recording, and music distribution—all of which sparked unprecedented exposure to non-western folk, classical, and tribal music from indigenous cultures around the world. In 1987, the European and North American music industry—determined to avoid the confusion and criticism that accompanied the choice of "New Age" for an earlier emerging genre—opted for simplicity and called the entire non-western traditional category "World Music." In time the World Music genre expanded to include ethnic fusions, crossovers, and hybrids, and the ethereal sounds of Tribal Electronic and World Ambient. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we journey over the high desert mesas, wind-blown dunes, and endless plains of the Ethno-Ambient soundscape, on a program called "AMBIENT TRAVELER 4." Music is by LAYNE REDMOND & TOMMY BRUNGES, BYRON METCALF & ARI URBAN, SUZANNE TENG & GILBERT LEVY, MARLA LEIGH, STEPHAN MICUS, and ANOUSHKA SHANKAR. This is a collection of tribal ambient tunes. Think frame drums and synth washes. Think Steve Roach & Robert Rich - "Strata." Think Byron Metcalf. THESE HOT SUMMER DAYS inspire a more energetic music, born out of ancient rituals, festivals, and religious ceremonies, and featuring primitive instruments whose descendants are still with us—flutes, rattles, drums, and other members of the global percussion family. Whether played for practical communication on hunts, for social and military occasions, or to accompany artistic performances, percussion music served many functions in cultures all over the ancient world. According to Grateful Dead drummer MICKEY HART in his essential book PLANET DRUM: “World Music—and the percussive impulse that drives it—reaches past the needs of the marketplace, into emotional and spiritual dialogue with older oral traditions. Underneath the world's extraordinary musical diversity is another, deeper realm, in which there is no better or worse, no modern or primitive, no art music or folk music—no distinctions at all—but rather an organic compulsion to translate the emotional fact of being alive into sound, into rhythm, into something you can dance to.” On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE—an ambient/trance/world percussion journey—on a program called PLANETARY RHYTHMS. Music is by JAMES HOOD, SPACE DRUM MEDITATION, DON PEYOTE, JAMES ASHER, MICHAEL SHRIEVE, HANG MASSIVE, SHAMANIC DRUMS, BYRON METCALF, and MICKEY HART.
Susanne Sundfør, Priscilla Hernández, Saycet, Joakín Bello, Ralph Zurmühle, Kevin Braheny, Saint Malo, Byron Metcalf, Mark Seelig, Arnold Dreyblatt, Explosions in the Sky. CalmRadio.UpliftingPills.com Instagram.com/UpliftingPills Over years of mixing ambient music, I have come to fall in love not only with certain artists, but labels who publish troves of ambient gold. This mix begins a series of albums named after some of my favorite labels. To start us off is Imaginary North, a Toronto-based label created by Daniel Field, who also produces exquisite ambient works as Kilometre Club. Established in 2022, Imaginary North focuses on bringing together like-minded musicians across the world to create compilations, collaborations, and individual pieces of music. The label is not afraid to experiment with ideas and concepts that transcend the typical album release. No where is this clearer than the release I want you to check out of this label. It's called Today Until Tomorrow. Across 92 tracks and 84 artists, it features 24 hours of ambient, drone, experimental, electronic, neo-classical, post-rock, and everything in between. 24 hours. One full day. An entire rotation of this planet we call home. This has to be one of my favorite ambient albums of all time. Check it out wherever you get your music! If you feel like supporting Calm Pills online radio & podcast or showing your appreciation, buy me a cup of a coffee (uppmixes.com/donate). You can also share this with your friends, rate it or leave a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you subscribed to this. Thank you. Also, did you know that I have another podcast called Chill Pills (chill.upliftingpills.com). It features the same quality of craftmanship and careful curation you've come to expect from this show but focuses on more genres of music spanning chillout, lofi chill hop, chillstep and lounge. The music we play is always governed by the new releases we receive, again a very varied selection, including the chill-out downtempo music of Thomas Lemmer, his unmistakable compositional signature sound. Relaxing symphonic scores of remixes from Stan Dart. On Winter Light Label, Rapoon & the duo Onasander & Ashtoreth give us ritualistic dark ambient & long form drones. Extremely dense and hypnotic sonic landscapes of Max Corbacho. Opening a portal to the universe in cosmic waves by Nova Stellaris, Natasha Barrett with a palette embracing musique concrete field recordings and electroacoustic music, & something we don't usually have, a single by Nattefrost with vocals from Toril Snyen from a forthcoming album. The timeless sound of prehistoric hand drums, brought to the present with space-defining ambient electronics. In the 1980s, elements of ancient indigenous music were embraced by electronic musicians searching for an earthy, vital sound to balance the dematerialized tones of electronic instruments, ground the atmospheric soundscapes of ambient, and gain the power of ritual experience. The genre was originally termed “Techno-Tribal,” but as the Techno label became associated with electronic dance music, it was renamed “Tribal Ambient.” Today, the period of discovery is long over, but a core group of electro-acoustic artists with a taste for psychedelic experience and a talent for rhythm, continue to refine the sound and release new albums. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another report from the creative intersection of tribal rhythms and ambient electronics, on a program called TRIBAL AMBIENT REVISITED. Music is by BYRON METCALF, FRORE & SHANE MORRIS, STEVE ROACH & MICHAEL STEARNS, SERENA GABRIEL, BIFF JOHNSON, and REMANENCE. The dulcet tones of the Native American cedar flute have inspired a soothing sub-genre of contemplative music. Pioneered by native musicians from the American Southwest, over the last 30 years the genre has attracted non-native musicians, who expanded into electronics and exotic percussion. It's a sound we enjoy in the fall, when it complements the mellow light and withering colors of the landscape, and evokes the vast, echoing canyons of the high desert. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an Indian Summer journey for Native American cedar flute, on a program called TWILIGHT EARTH 4. Music is by ANN LICATER, COYOTE JUMP, COYOTE OLDMAN, BYRON METCALF, JOHNNY WHITEHORSE, PAMELA WHITMAN & RICH KURTZ, TONY GERBER, MYSTERIES OF THE NIGHT, and SCOTT AUGUST. It's not all that often that a new strain of popular electronic music arrives in the culture fully formed, but it happened in 1988 in the wake of STEVE ROACH's ground-breaking album DREAMTIME RETURN. Like Stravinsky 75 years earlier with The Rite of Spring, Roach realized that electronic music needed a dose of primitive energy and physicality — and he found it in the trance-inducing music of the aboriginal tribes of Australia. The new genre was called "Techno-Tribal" and it combined electronic atmospheres with primitive rattles, drums, rocks, and the aboriginal didgeridoo. If our current political tribalism is an index of popularity, tribal music should be all the rage. But most electronic artists are urban, and have been influenced by Electronic Dance Music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, ethnotronic atmospheres meet trance percussion, on a program called TRIBAL AMBIENT. Music is by STEVE ROACH, BYRON METCALF & JENNIFER GRAIS, INLAKESH, FRORE & SHANE MORRIS, JOHN VORUS, D LOOP and KEVIN BRAHENY FORTUNE. Spring has long been the most unpredictable of seasons—these days, more than ever. This week we had a bit of January in May here in Northern California; next week it'll be like high summer. Everything is changing, and the wind rushes in every direction in a futile effort at equilibrium. The seasonal winds inspire ambient musicians to create an airy, open music with flutes and electronics, and we can ride the sound currents like birds in search of new frontiers. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an airy, windy, floating journey for spring, on a program called VERNAL FLIGHT. Music is by PETE KUZMA, BYRON METCALF, MICHAEL BRANT DeMARIA, COYOTE OLDMAN, TOM MOORE & SHERRY FINZER, LARKIN, PAUL AVGERINOS, STEPHEN PEPPOS, and RUDY ADRIAN. Today I'm talking about a topic I am really passionate about! So you have heard about yin and yang and probably seen the yin and yang symbol. The yin and yang are all about the balance between two opposites, and this is something many of us struggle with, is finding balance in our life. One of the reasons you are craving more balance is because you are operating day to day from your more dominant energy, so either your masculine energy or your feminine energy. Is feminine energy or masculine energy your strength? Do you even know? In this episode, Joe speaks with award-winning musician, producer, transpersonal guide, shamanic practitioner, and certified graduate of Grof Transpersonal Training, Byron Metcalf. They discuss Metcalf’s path from being a Nashville-based studio musician (who played on Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler”) to a “midlife correction” of taking a class with Stan Grof and Jacquelyn Small leading to him discovering holotropic breathwork: a whole new world he had never seen before that perfectly suited his musical mind. They discuss how Metcalf works with music- from recording and producing to making mixes for sessions, how different types of music work better for different types of sessions, and how important it is to think about the flow of a mix and the transitions and mixing between songs in how it relates to the journey of the people listening- when does up-tempo music work best in comparison to more heart-centered, emotional music? When is more shamanic, percussion-based music more appropriate? He also talks about the effect of people’s projections in these sessions and a funny story of when he thought he heard Christmas music during a session, using Spotify for session music, streaming vs. downloading, 320kbps vs. 24-bit recordings, creating music sober vs. under the influence, the effectiveness of binaural beats, and co-creating retreats with clients to fit their custom personal and musical needs. Notable Quotes “It just… changed my life. I mean, literally, just like, ‘what is this? How is this even possible to just do some deep breathing and listen to this incredible music?’ ...What it reminded me of was a psychedelic experience. And so I immediately saw the potential in it… And of course… how that model uses music was kind of just a perfect fit for me.” “You’re doing your own work. The best healers or the best facilitators, therapists, whatever- are the ones who really have done their own work, and in fact, I don’t trust anyone [who] hasn’t.” “I was really fortunate that Stan would enlist me to do music sometimes at these bigger events- the Insight and Opening where Stan and Jack Cornfield would combine the holotropic breathwork with Vipassana meditation for a week. And it was groups of 200, and so you got 100 people breathing at one time and it’s [a] pretty fantastic energy field as you could imagine. And just seeing- observing what happens for people and to people and through people, still- when I think about it and start describing some of the things that I’ve witnessed and observed and experienced, it almost sounds like [I’m] making this stuff up… It’s like trying to explain a psychedelic experience to someone that’s never had it before… There’s no way you can really convey that. So it has to be experienced.” “There’s something higher, bigger- that’s at work here that we want to make contact with and surrender to. So that’s the goal. And sometimes if people are projecting on the music, not liking the music- sometimes changing it would be good. Other times, not. Because maybe it is bringing up a great piece for them. And [they say] “I don’t like this! I don’t like this!” Of course that’s projecting onto the music. What’s going on underneath that?” Links http://byronmetcalf.com/ http://holoshamanicstrategies.org/ http://byronmetcalf.bandcamp.com/ About X Guest image headshot goes here. G’day listeners, we are here to take you on another journey into oceans of atmospheric textures, expressive rhythmical dynamics and the unexplained dark tones, cast by our selection of talented musicians who take you on their journey into the sounds of this New Year. As always, featuring the female side of this genre, Danish synthesist Sofie Birch cosmic caresses & jazz dusting of reality departures, an exploration into the energies by An On Bast, second single from Stephanie Sante from her forth-coming album Dark Matter Evolution, hypnotic & mesmerizing organic ambiance by Panic Girl, & Jennifer Grais spirit-driven voice, teaming up with Byron Metcalf’s rich layering of indigenous instruments, percussive textures & ethereal voices, Exploring sonic improvisations using a range of portable modular synthesizers as well as a selection of analog keyboards, Nigel Mullaney on the Din label, the music of tomorrow created in a retro manner from Cyberwalker & Walter Christian Rothe chords and melodies straight from the heart, are just some of the talented musicians appearing in this issue. On a sad note, we lost Michael Allison of Darshan Ambient after a brave fight with cancer, as a fitting tribute, we give you music from his latest album A Day Like Any Other, released just before his passing. Blast from the past features the track Dune, from Jade Warrior’s 1984 album Horizon, core members of the band were Jon Field still performing & Tony Duhig who passed away in 1990. Byron Metcalf and Mark Seelig discuss their backgrounds in holotropic breathwork, transpersonal psychology and shamanism in how it shapes their music and holds the potential to transform lives, as well as the modern world we all inhabit. Topics covered include working with experience in altered states, psychoactive sacraments (synthetic and plant-based), the creative process, and how we can apply ancient wisdom combined with modern knowledge to tackle some of the difficult challenges we face, both as individuals and as a species. Towards the end of the conversation, they get in to their newest Hemi-Sync® album, "Persistent Visions."

This is the perfect mix to close out 2018 and look forward to 2019. "Turning Hopeful" has a more hopeful, positive vibe than most of my mixes. Which is why it should be no surprise to find out that it was curated by the one and only Paul Asbury Seaman. I like working together with Paul because he takes mixes in slightly different directions than I usually do. These collaborations bring a nice breath of fresh air to this 12 year old mix blog. Here's what Paul says about this mix: "This mix features melodic ambient tracks with a hopeful feeling, including some early New Age classics guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Also, brand new tracks from Byron Metcalf and Remote Vision, a solo project of Don Tyler (Ascendant). The theme was inspired by the title song from John Hiatt's 1988 album, “Slow Turning.” Redemption means turning from one way of being to embrace another, a recurring process, fueled by hope." Thanks Paul, in 2019 I hope we can all turn hopeful. Cheers & Happy New Year! There’s gathering storm season here in OZ. While the boss is dictating our opening text to me, there’s a spectacular light show going on outside, and no kidding, the rain is nearly horizontal. Once again we take our trip to look at new releases from man & machines, not forgetting us ladies too, as the broad spectrum of sounds fill our airways. We are excited to have some quality music supplied by the owner of Heart Dance Records & R. S. Promotions, Sherry Finzer, who is an award winning new age flautist featured here with Tom Moore on the relaxation/meditational album let ‘There Be Light’. Space cadets will like the ambient side of this edition, drone soundscapes from Velge Naturlig, deep space exploration of Jaja & Jeff Pearce’s cosmic & wintry excursions just created on the guitar. Eleon, Jakub Fijak, James Asher & Richard Shulman showcase their music for the first time on Sequences, melody, sequencing and cinematic symphonic music you will love. Those more adventurous are catered by, Giant Skeletons, Shall Remain Nameless & Sensitive Chaos and we even have a spot of trance, spiced up by the feminine side of the composer Johanna Von Pfeife. Byron Metcalf with Erik Wollo & Peter Phippen continues his journey into the hypnotic rhythms and haunting melodic sound textures, meditative melodies and calm sequences from Natural Life Essence.
