Have you ever looked at a piece of toast, a cloud or a nearby house and had the impression there's a face in it, looking right back at you? If you're like most people, it happens to you on a regular basis, and once you've seen the face, you just can't un-see it! It's down to a human tendency known as pareidolia. The psychological phenomenon comes from the Greek words para, meaning “beside” or “beyond” and “idolia”, meaning form or image. It's basically our brains playing tricks on us, but for a very good reason. And it's nothing new either; Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci wrote about it in his notebooks. Pareidolia is an example of apophenia, which is the tendency to make sense of, or connect things that are actually unconnected. Our brains are always looking for patterns in information from the outside world, to use as a basis for the decisions we make. Do you have any examples? Why does the brain do that then? Are some people more affected than others? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the latest episodes, click here: What is bae-realing, the new dating trend? In this episode, you join me as we explore Amy's question: 'What is pareidolia and am I going crazy?' Season Two is here, friends!! And we start this new season with Seb having sourced a 1996 video called The Face in the Window that documents the experience of a rural Missouri family who happen to be playing with their new camcorder (remember when VHS ruled the roost?) when something strange peeks in their window to see how the wrestling match is going. Was it an alien? Was it possibly a mascot head? Either way, there's definitely some high strangeness afoot!

Today we get into some of the most chilling and controversial tales in Sasquatch and cryptid lore. From the eerie disappearances in Portlock, Alaska, to the infamous Dyatlov Pass incident, we explore the darker side of these legends and the psychological phenomena that fuel our interpretations. The Portlock Alaska Mystery We start in the once-thriving town of Portlock, Alaska, where legends tell of a community driven to abandon their homes due to attacks by a hostile Sasquatch. We examine historical accounts, speak with experts to understand the socio-economic factors at play, and explore whether there's more to the story than mythic creatures. The Dyatlov Pass Tragedy Next, we travel to the snowy slopes of the Ural Mountains in Russia, where nine hikers tragically lost their lives under mysterious circumstances in 1959. Theories about their demise range from avalanches to military experiments, but some insist a Yeti was involved. We dissect the evidence and consider the plausibility of a cryptid encounter. Pareidolia and Sasquatch Research In our final segment, we revisit an experiment I recently conducted with a photo of a stump that many mistook for a Sasquatch. This discussion highlights how pareidolia—seeing faces and forms in mundane objects—can lead even the most earnest researchers astray. We'll talk about the importance of critical thinking and maintaining scientific integrity in cryptid research. Today's journey these chilling tales not only entertains but reminds us of the power of folklore and perception in shaping our understanding of the unknown. As we chase shadows in the wilderness, let's also shine a light on the facts and fictions that guide us. In this episode, Brian shares an interview that he did over as a guest of the Tinfoil Tales podcast. Brian shares his journey from law enforcement to exploring cryptids like Bigfoot and UFOs, and discusses how he rekindled his interest through podcasts about five years ago. Brian started his own podcast, Sasquatch Odyssey, in 2021, aiming to document Bigfoot encounters, particularly in the Southeastern United States. He details the challenges of starting a podcast with no prior experience, receiving pivotal audio-quality advice from Wes of Sasquatch Chronicles. Brian also talks about the competitive but collaborative nature of the cryptids podcasting community, his approach to interviewing witnesses, and the evolution of his network of podcasts. The discussion touches on the mysterious aspects of Bigfoot encounters, the credibility issues within the Bigfoot research community, and Brian's personal journey towards demystifying these phenomena. Additionally, they talk about the struggles and skepticism faced in the world of Bigfoot research, the influence of well-known figures such as Dr. Jeff Meldrum and Cliff Barackman, and the controversy surrounding figures like Todd Standing.Listen To Backwoods Bigfoot Stories Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Book Sasquatch Unleashed The Truth Behind The LegendLeave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Hangar 1 Publishing00:00 Welcome and Guest Introduction 00:15 Brian's Journey to Podcasting 01:52 Starting Sasquatch Odyssey 03:03 Challenges and Growth 05:12 Full-Time Podcasting Decision 06:14 Expanding the Podcast Network 09:46 Exploring Cryptids and Dogman 10:51 Skepticism and Belief 16:22 High Strangeness and Bigfoot 34:44 Personal Experiences and Sixth Sense 42:00 Skepticism and Preparation for the Bigfoot Expedition 43:10 Unexplainable Experiences in the Woods 44:08 Debating the Existence of Bigfoot 44:46 Challenges in Proving Bigfoot's Existence 45:55 Government Conspiracies and Skepticism 48:49 The Role of Experts and Evidence in Bigfoot Research 53:58 Todd Standing: The Controversial Figure 01:04:12 The Problem with Hoaxes and Pareidolia 01:13:15 The Quest for Answers and Upcoming Projects 01:13:33 Wrapping Up: Book and Podcast InformationBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

Do you prefer multistory episodes, single story episodes, or a mix? Let us know! In this episode of Discover Daily, we begin with recent research from MIT, which reveals that AI can now recognize faces in inanimate objects, a phenomenon known as pareidolia. This development suggests intriguing links between evolutionary survival skills and our tendency to see faces in everyday objects, and it has far-reaching implications for AI systems, from improved security and emotion recognition to enhanced object detection capabilities.Next, we discuss a shocking discovery reported in Nature: most tropical thunderstorms are radioactive, producing various forms of gamma radiation far more frequently than previously thought. Using a retrofitted U-2 spy plane, scientists have conducted unprecedented close observations of storm dynamics, revealing that over half of all thunderstorms in the tropics are radioactive. This finding challenges existing models of storm physics and atmospheric phenomena, and it could lead to improved weather forecasting and climate modeling.Join us as we explore these fascinating developments and their potential impact on our understanding of the world around us. In this episode of The Digest, we embark on a journey through various dimensions of perception, language, and self-awareness. We start by challenging conventional notions of beauty, suggesting that true attractiveness extends beyond physical appearance and is enriched by personality and spirit. We then shift our focus to the broader definition of beauty as encouraged by Confucius, urging listeners to find beauty in all things, regardless of their initial impression. Language plays a pivotal role in this episode as we decode the expression "a stone's throw away" and distinguish between "especially" and "specially." The legendary impact of Shakespeare is highlighted, revealing how his inventive use of words has shaped modern English. Pareidolia, the tendency to perceive familiar patterns where none actually exist, is explored in a segment that illuminates our psychological wiring. In this episode, Nick and Chris various topics including the Atlanta Hawks' coin flip games, the Match Group lawsuit, Wendy's surge pricing, and the blue dot effect. The blue dot effect refers to the phenomenon where people change their concept of something based on its prevalence. This has implications for decision-making and perception. The hosts also explore the influence of media and news on people's biases and perceptions. This conversation explores the power of negative news and the human tendency to impose meaning on ambiguous stimuli. It delves into the impact of social media algorithms and the dark side of platforms like TikTok. The conversation also discusses the incentives of activism and the perceived worsening of the world. Finally, it examines the inshitification of online platforms and offers solutions such as personal acknowledgment and empathy. Humans have a natural tendency to impose meaning on ambiguous stimuli, such as seeing faces in inanimate objects. Social media algorithms can reinforce negative perceptions and lead to unhealthy consumption habits, especially among vulnerable populations like teenagers. Activism can be driven by a desire to perpetuate one's own status and prestige, leading to a constant search for problems to solve. Online platforms often deteriorate in quality over time as they prioritize their own interests over those of their users. Individuals can combat bias and improve their approach by acknowledging their own tendencies and programming 'ducks' into their work. Empathy and patience can help navigate situations where others may be prone to pareidolia and blue dotting. Are the apparent manifestations of ghostly phenomena simply the power of the mind? Mere figments of the imagination or hallucinations? Pareidolia? OR, are they something much, MUCH more that science does not (or will not) accept?? If we had our druthers, this wouldn't be up for debate, ha!

This episode cotnains: Steven and Ben have a low-effort, high stress-relief episode. Nothing matters anymore: Steven's world is on fire with COVID hitting his house again, and it's looking to derail Steven's wife's 40th birthday plans. Well, they were secret 40th birthday plans that Steven has worked really hard to set up, and now are in peril. Some days, Steven just needs a nap and a juice box. Ben prefers the term “house spouse” to “stay at home parent,” but Steven HATES it. Devon isn't here because he went to Omega Mart in Las Vegas: that crazy fever dream/theme park/grocery store. Ben's mom is recovering well from surgery, and Ben has dealt with stress by forgetting a bunch of stuff he actually did do and escaping into Elden Ring. Clean your room!: Air purifiers aren't enough to clean your home from wildfire smoke. After a wildfire, if you want to stay healthy indoors, it's not enough to just open windows. Volatile Organic Compounds can stay in floors and walls. How do you get rid of them? CLEAN UP! Mopping, dusting and vacuuming can get those VOCs out of your surfaces. Good luck if you have popcorn ceilings, like Ben does. Ben remembers finding patterns and images in the popcorn ceiling back in high school. Steven remembers the word Pareidolia: the perception of random images, especially faces, in random shapes and lines. https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/10/air-purifiers-arent-enough-to-clean-your-home-from-wildfire-smoke/ Science Fiction: Where does Steven go for a pick-me-up when he's down? Enter Peacock's own Twisted Metal. Thanks for the recommendation, Devon. After three episodes, Steven sees it's a decent show. It walks a fine line between being absurd and serious, but it's all still believable within the show. Steven and Ben wonder what is going on with LOKI in season 2. Like, what's up with X-5? Oh that's right, this is a TIME TRAVEL SHOW. We're all experiencing temporal whiplash. Maybe they'll tell the rest of the story at another time? For all time, always. Ben's son is not into this season, but is begrudgingly allowing us to watch LOKI instead of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Can you believe that Disney showed surprising restraint by not peppering the MCU's version of 1977 with a bunch of Star Wars posters? The late-1980s McDonalds is incredible, now Ben wants an apple pie. Remember when McDonalds had lore? The McDonalds Cinematic Universe with the Hamburgler and fry guys and all the nostalgia! Is Sylvie's manager a young Mobius? We talk even more after the break: Let's talk about Fallout Wasteland Warfare! Steven's never played the tabletop game, but he's excited about painting a Frank Horrigan figurine from it. Do you even Fallout, fool?: https://falloutfacts.com/fallout-frank-horrigan . Ben's learning to git gud noob in Elden Ring, after noping out of it half a year ago. Big thanks to JumpinProductions for their Noob's Guide for Elden Ring: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvSjDM1TnnA_lZWYp4N8hqj6IKNv3P7tc. In contrast to Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are power fantasies. Steven tells Ben about i-frames. The real game is timing. Giant disgustingly beautiful enemies? Run around them! Stormwind Castle has incredible detail showing ancient battles and sense of place. Is Elden Ring the game of the decade? How could we know? After A LONG TALK about Elden Ring, Ben recommends 3D Sen VR: an NES emulator that makes ye olde Nintendo games 3D diaramas and it's incredible. http://www.geodstudio.net/ We rank Batman movies, and Steven continues to sing the praises of The Batman, even over the Nolanverse. It's so good, mainly because it brings in the detective side of Batman.

Pair of...what?!Well, eyes are a good place to start.
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 6, 2023 is: pareidolia pair-eye-DOH-lee-uh noun Pareidolia refers to the tendency to perceive a specific and often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern. // For those especially prone to pareidolia, a simple piece of toast can get distracting. See the entry > Examples: “A key to interpersonal interactions is the ability to read facial expressions, which is why we are hardwired to recognise faces and often believe to see them even in random objects (this is called face pareidolia). Just as with faces, recognising social dynamics is largely innate and effortless.” — Damian K. F. Pang, Psychology Today, 14 May 2023 Did you know? If you've ever spotted an image of a dog or a shoe in the clouds, you've exhibited what is called pareidolia, the tendency to perceive a meaningful image in a random pattern. Pareidolia emerged in English in 1962, borrowed from the German word Pareidolie, itself a combination of the Greek prefix par-, the Greek noun eídōlon (“image, reflection”), and the German suffix -ie. But although the word may be relatively new to English speakers, the concept is not. During the Renaissance, for example, artists such as Giuseppe Arcimboldo—who painted collections of fruits, vegetables, and other objects to look like human portraits—used pareidolia as a technique in their work, while Leonardo da Vinci once wrote, “… if you look at any walls spotted with various stains or with a mixture of different kinds of stones, if you are about to invent some scene you will be able to see in it a resemblance to various different landscapes adorned with mountains, rivers, rocks, trees, plains, wide valleys, and various groups of hills.” So the next time you see the man or even a toad in the moon, you can think of your kinship with Da Vinci.
Welcome to GIVE ME THE FEAR - the Britflicks Podcast, Frightfest 2023 preview series. Hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright, these brief, spoiler free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don't teach at film school. Humans are the ultimate pattern matchers - at least for now. I have to admit I'm looking forward to the day I can give some new AI a set of images and ask it to tell me what animals it can find among the nebulae. The software isn't there yet… But we're also going to take a closer look at how art and AI look at space. And also science: From looking at active volcanism on Venus to eruptions on the Sun to rotating black hole jets and more, we take you on a journey through all that is new in space and astronomy. Welcome back beautiful souls & Welcome to Divination Week! If you needed a sign, THIS IS IT! It's time to get into your spirituality! The 20 somethings gang is pleasantly proud to finally share the arrival of Divination Week! This is day 4 and for the next 3 days, we will be introducing divination techniques, practices and tools everyday. The purpose of divination week is to share knowledge and showcase some otherwise slept on divination practices in an effort to help you guys learn more about your innate spiritual selves and find a hopefully discover a practice that suits you!Scrying has got to be one of Jerome's favorite divination practices, next to Astrology, mainly due to how imaginative scrying requires the practitioner to be. It is fairly easy to scry and some do it without even knowing that they're doing it! We call people like you, naturals. Scrying can be done through a wide set of objects, materials and surfaces so it's up to you to decide which one works for you best.A word that relates to scrying is Pareidolia" which means to perceive meaning, shapes or patterns in something in which there isn't any; Such as cloud scrying or those who read tea leaves as a form of divination. Although there isn't any obvious shape, symbol, pattern or meaning that doesn't mean one can't be assigned. One thing about the universe, it will use ANY and EVERY thing possible to get a message across. Scrying is a wonderful tool to help that process along! This episode is definitely worth listening to if you're interested in learning some scrying basics and taking your understanding of yourself a bit further in this particular direction. Scrying is a very fun and easy to do practice but it is probably one that requires the most protection. Whether one wishes to believe it or not, scrying opens you up, on several levels, to energies that linger just outside your perception and as always, we encourage spiritual, mental and emotional health so that you can avoid or downright repel these energies. Please practice with pre-caution and safety, and DM us if you have any questions or wish to share your experiences! After a decade of searching, a determined Mars rover discovers an eerily familiar formation of an ancient crater, inciting an interplanetary investigation of the phenomenon of pareidolia. You will learn the mysteries of the Red Planet and the latest updates on Mars exploration.Show Notes:After a decade of searching, a determined Mars rover discovers an eerily familiar formation of an ancient crater, inciting an interplanetary investigation of the phenomenon of pareidolia. You will learn the mysteries of the Red Planet and the latest updates on Mars exploration. Learn about Mars exploration through a lively conversation between Andrew Dunkley and Professor Fred Watson on Space Nuts. They discussed the phenomenon of pareidolia, where people find familiar shapes in random objects, and how it has been seen on Mars in the form of faces, hats, and other shapes. They also talked about the rover Perseverance and its mission to collect samples which have been left on the surface in 10 sealed tubes. They have now been dropped at a geographical location called Three Forks. Lastly, they discussed the camera on the rover's arm called Watson, which uses spectroscopy to analyze the rock samples. "We try to humanize everything we do humanize it. It's great because it draws attention to what's going on around it and maybe they get interested and have a look at some more. We just seem to gravitate to faces, don't we? Especially smiley ones. Well, that's good. I mean, you don't really want evil faces in space." In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. What is the phenomenon of pareidolia, and how does it explain why we see faces in inanimate objects? 2. What happened when the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured an image of a "Paddington Bear" on the surface of Mars? 3. What advanced technologies are being used to collect and analyze samples from the surface of Mars?Space Nuts Episode 339 with Professor Fred Watson & Andrew Dunkley Download from your favorite podcast distributor or visit our website at www.spacenuts.io Sponsor Links: This episode of Space Nuts is brought to you by NordVPN…the highly rated VPN service and the one we personally use.
