Rugby podcasters Brett McKay and Harry Jones are joined on The 8-9 Combo by co-founder and GM of Sport for Gain Line Analytics, Simon Strachan for a deep dive into the numbers behind the teams playing in not just all the major rugby competitions around the world, but in plenty of other sports as well. In a conversation that will impact the way you think about teams performing well and not so well, Simon explains how Gain Line's deep analysis and research or playing groups helps teams in numerous sports understand why they have set themselves up for ongoing success or chronic failure through either their structures or their recruitment, and how across the four leading professional rugby competitions around the world in 2023, three were won by the team with the best Team Work Index.   Social media: #89Combo Twitter: https://twitter.com/89combo Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/89combo/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@8-9Combo TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@89combopodcast   Brett: https://twitter.com/BMcSport Harry: https://twitter.com/HaribaldiJones   (Yes, Brett and Harry did used to host The Roar Rugby Podcast!)   Find Brett and Harry's written work on RugbyPass and The Roar: Brett: https://www.rugbypass.com/plus/contributor/brett-mckay/ Harry: https://www.theroar.com.au/author/haribaldi/   Music from Uppbeat: https://uppbeat.io/track/oakvale-of-albion/extreme Voiceovers by Chookman + Amelia Learn more about your ad choices. This week my co-host, Professor Eric Knight and I continue our exploration of Thriving Teams with Ben Darwin.Ben is a former Australian Rugby Union player who represented his country 28 times. He retired at the age of 27 after a neck injury and moved in to coaching before co-founding Gain Line Analytics, a company that has uses empirical analysis to understand the way professional sports teams work and succeed with each other. It is one of the more fascinating interviews we have had on the podcast because of the challenging views he has on the traditional drivers of success. Some of the key highlights are:The idea that small groups can be highly effective and the example he gives from military and history to show that it is the cohesion of your team, not the size of the talent pool you pull from that is key to success. His description of cohesion as understanding between the component parts of a team. And that this understanding is much more predictive of outcomes than the individual skill. And How effective cultures have normative behaviors that are established over time, are harder to change and can be learnt more easily across the components of the team.If you would like to know about more Thriving Teams or use the diagnostic we have created to understand how close to Thriving your teams is you can check out our tools here: https://thegreatcoachespodcast.com/thriving-teams/If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at paul@thegreatcoachespodcast.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com Hosted on Acast. "What is the truth of performance?"  It's a question as relevant in the world of sport as it is in the worlds of business and investing. And it's a question that drives everything former Wallaby Ben Darwin does with his team at GAIN LINE Analytics. Ben is our guest on this week's episode of the Investing for Life podcast. After suffering a career-ending neck injury in the 2003 Rugby World Cup semi-final, Ben went on a journey of self-discovery. Starting that fateful match, Ben finally felt like he was “where he wanted to be”. But, as he describes in this episode to host Douglas Isles, just one moment changed his life permanently.  Over the coming years, Ben had to reflect and rebuild – physically and mentally – to work out where life would take him after the very real threat of quadriplegia.  "When I had the injury, the doctor said to me: "This is gonna go one of three ways: you become a quad; you get killed; or you're gonna walk out of here." So, I got to walk out."‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ It was during those years of reflection and rebuilding that he started to explore high-performing teams from a fresh perspective – as a coach and then analyst. The data drew him to the idea of ‘cohesion', and its clear presence in high-performing teams: something he has now spent a decade sharing with clients across sport and business through his role as Co-founder and Director at GAIN LINE Analytics.  "Talking to guys like Craig Bellamy, Arsene Wenger…they know they are not the reason for the success. They know there's certain things they can do, but massive things they can't control.‬ "The level of understanding between the participants of the team is far more predictive of the outcome than the level of individual skill."‬‬‬   Listen to this episode to hear more about: Ben's life-threatening injury in the 2003 World Cup semi-final against the All Blacks; His rehabilitation journey - physically and mentally - including his ADHD diagnosis; His transition from professional sport into a career in team cohesion, data and analytics; and His views on the importance of team cohesion for performance and engagement, and how organisations like the AFL have become the benchmark globally.   Investing for Life is hosted by Douglas Isles, Platinum Asset Management.Disclaimer: Issued by Platinum Investment Management Limited ABN 25 063 565 006, AFSL 221935. Today we spoke with Ben Darwin - Director Gain Line Analytics, Former Australia Pro Rugby Player and Coac. Ben had to retire from professional rugby prematurely due to a severe neck injury. Here's the story about what he's done since, and why he went this way...examining team cohesion and teamwork indices that contribute to consistent winning and on-field success. Ben propped for the Brumbies and the Wallabies, before embarking on analytics and forward coach positions with teams such as Western Force, Melbourne Rebels and Suntory in Japan. His company, Gain Line, founded in 2013, is changing the game around data analytics revealing that great teams are the product of the connections and linkages within. There is a wonderful dialogue around the structural layers that drive cohesion in teams, namely shared experiences, combinations and the overarching system - one for pro sport and business. As distinct from other operations and management consultancies in the industry, Gain Line places a strong focus on data analysis and quantitative research. We really appreciate this as the solutions are backed by evidence and real-world experience, like our worlds in physio and sports medicine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Highlights

They brought up some very interesting things, such as the possibility that the Wests Tigers will look better as the season goes on but could still miss the top 8, how the New Zealand Warriors have never really taken advantage of the State Of origin period, and how no matter who you are, an out of Sydney team is disadvantaged by the Grand Final always being in Sydney. Counterpoints: The Sports Analytics Podcast from MIT Sloan Management Review

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: The rag-tag group of underdogs overcomes the more skilled favorite thanks to nothing more than their belief in each other. That popular sports movie cliché may feel unrealistic at times, but when it comes to building a team in real life, the value of cohesiveness and chemistry is increasingly measurable and provable. Whether it’s the NBA’s 2004 Detroit Pistons, the 2016 Leicester City Foxes soccer club, or the miracle 2003 Penrith Panthers of Australian rugby, there are many examples of the right players in the right system doing something seemingly impossible. But is it actually possible to quantify team chemistry — and if so, can such assessments really make a difference on the field? We speak with Simon Strachan of Gain Line Analytics to find out.

Cohesion: the action or fact of forming a united whole. It's a word former Wallaby and Gain Line Analytics co-founder Ben Darwin has become an expert in as he challenges the way professional sporting teams chase success. The less teams change, the better they become, according to Darwin, with average players and even coaches often made to look greater in a cohesive environment. It's what Darwin calls the 'Melbourne Storm Mirage'.
