Having spent the last decade exploring and documenting Iceland, Chris finally made the big move with his family. He tells Payson about why he decided the time was right, what it's been like as a parent to watch his sons assimilate so quickly into the community, and how the current seismic activity has made him ponder the morality of documenting natural disasters. He also talks about his grueling journey on the Tour Divide, complete with persistent mechanicals, an emotional voicemail, and an incident with a canister of bear spray that definitely isn't what you'd think. He might've wanted to burn all his bikes by the end of it, but he's already thinking about going back. Instagram: @theadventurestache

Jess Mudgett is an artist, skater, surfer, and occasional ranch hand who specializes in one-of-a-kind designs that appear everywhere from murals in the rural West to the Yeti offices in downtown Austin. Fans of Jess's work can spot his art from a mile away– he's known for bold, often-times big portrayals of western landscapes, horses, birds, people, and more, all presented in a style that is uniquely his own. If you're not familiar with Jess's art, I'd encourage you to visit his Instagram page while listening– there's a link in the notes for you to click through. - Jess was raised in Fort Collins, Colorado, and grew up obsessed with and fully committed to skateboarding. While attending art school in Portland, he dropped out to go on a professionally funded skate trip, which ultimately led to getting his foot in the door with the art department of a skate company.  After a few years, Jess returned to school to earn his degree, and his path as a professional artist was set. Currently, Jess is based in Portland, but spends big portions of the year traveling the West in his truck, creating art for a wide variety of well-known companies and individuals. - Jess and I met up at my house in Colorado Springs and had a fun conversation about his life as an artist. We started out discussing his upbringing in Fort Collins and how skating and art became the focus of his life. We discuss his creative process, his partnerships with popular brands, and his relationship with the renowned photographer (and past podcast guest) Chris Burkard. Jess describes his time working on Mark Carter's Wyoming ranch, his lifestyle of living on the road, how he pushes through self-doubt, his love of tattoos, and some of the artists who have inspired him over the years. And what I loved most about this conversation was Jess's overall vibe of deep gratitude and true humility– I think you'll be inspired by his approach to life and art. - And as a surprise, Jess created a special Mountain & Prairie design that I know you'll love– I sure do. I'm going to be offering this design on special edition t-shirts, stickers, and coffee mugs in the Mountain & Prairie shop. If you want to check out the collection, follow the link in the notes. It's an awesome design, and I'm honored that Jess took the time to create such a unique piece just for Mountain & Prairie listeners. - Once again, thanks for taking the time to listen. Do you ever think that the people most qualified to perform particular tasks are those who have an intimate knowledge of that task? For example, an ex-footballer or rugby player might be best suited for a job as a referee. How about sports photography? If you've participated in a sport and know exactly what the performers are going through, do you think that might help you to frame even better pictures? Maybe that's why today's podcast guest Jack Schofield has risen to the top of the triathlon photography world so quickly. Not only does Jack take some brilliant photos, he's also a pretty decent triathlete himself. Earlier this year he finished second overall at the age group only Ironman UK and just a few days before we chatted he had completed this year's Ironman World Championships in Kona. In fact, Jack was splitting his time between preparing for the race and taking photos for Ruth Astle on her Thursday Kona race day. Dividing your energies like this is challenging and we get into this topic, as well as: The conversion from rowing to triathlon How studying architecture helps him to frame good photographs How understanding exactly what triathletes go through helps him frame good photos Training with Patrick Lange and other elite triathletes Jack has a rant about triathletes who use but don't pay for finish-line photos To find out more about Jack he hangs out mostly on Instagram: www.Instagram.com/two26_photography/ www.Instagram.com/jackyscho/   In our conversation, Jack talked about his first photography book which he also (unsurprisingly) recommends as his favourite book

One of them being to Bali where he met pro surfer Jeff Hakman and his future wife. That trip would change Bob's life forever. Jeff had met Alan Green in Bells Beach, Australia after he won the contest there. Alan had set up a company called Quiksilver making the first ever shorts for surfers. Jeff and Bob convinced Alan to license Quiksilver for the North American market. They started manufacturing and selling board shorts out of Bob's VW van up and down the country to surf shops. The surf shops couldn't get enough of Quiksilver. They were at the beginning of the modern surf industry and they went from being a start up to becoming a multi-million dollar business. Quiksilver were the first surfing company to go public on the New York Stock Exchange and the first to launch a female range, Roxy. They expanded into skateboarding and snow and by the mid 2000's Quiksilver was worth 2.5 Billion dollars. Gus Morton quit professional cycling at the age of 21 to pursue a career as a filmmaker. He was briefly pulled back into professional racing but left the sport for good in 2017, when he merged his two areas of expertise by creating the production company Thereabouts, which put an alternative lens on cycling that didn't revolve around competition or traditional,  straightforward narratives of accomplishment. Instead, the projects focus on "conveying the feeling rather than recounting the experience" of cycling adventures. In January of 2021, Gus joined endurance athlete Rebecca Rusch and photographer Chris Burkard on the first winter crossing of Iceland by bike. They set out to make a film about the experience, but the project became much more than a portrait of athletic endurance when Gus found himself trapped in Mexico for two weeks following the expedition, confronting a very different kind of struggle. In this conversation, he tells Payson about how his battle with alcoholism came to a head during that two-week stay in Mexico City, and why he decided to re-frame the film around his relapse and recovery. They talk about how he wrestled with alcohol as a professional cyclist, the moment he revealed to Chris and Rebecca that he'd relapsed after their trip, and the process of turning his experiences with addiction into a creative project. The film, 'I Am Here,' is in production. A Kickstarter campaign was launched earlier this month to fund the remaining work. For Chris Burkard, photography has always been more than just taking spectacular pictures. He's used his craft as a way to tell stories, inspire people to adventure outside, and most of all, to push himself to the edge of his comfort zone. He's caught freezing cold-water waves with professional surfer Pete Devries. He's biked with champion mountain biker Rebecca Rusch. He's hung off cliffs in Moab, surfed in Iceland, and skied near the Arctic circle. After spending much of his career documenting other people's lives and adventures, Chris recently decided to turn the camera on himself and share stories from his own travels in his memoir called Wayward.Other episodes to listen to:Chris Burkard 2017 episodeConnect with Chris Burkard:WebsiteFacebookTwitterInstagramResources:The book that Chris mentioned, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown

My path is clear when I am out there" - Rebecca Rusch When I saw Rebecca Rusch's Emmy-winning film, Blood Road, -about her trip to be the first person to ride the entire 1,200-mile length of the Ho Chi Minh Trail - I instantly felt connected to her, because of my time spend living in Vietnam and Laos, and because of the full spectrum of emotions she goes through on this trip, which is a quest to find the place her father's plane was shot down in the Vietnam war. This interview will go deep in to that journey and many of the other experiences that have made Rebecca an adventure and cycling hall of famer. To make a living traveling the world, you have to get down to the essentials. Photographer and global explorer Chris Burkard joins No Blackout Dates to discuss how, exactly, he manages to do that. Chris shares insight on everything from what makes a good story to how he packs for expeditions. One constant theme through all of this? Risk management. Through his commercial and travel-based work, including an admittedly large collection of “really bad” photos, Chris has honed in on what it takes to plan and execute extremely dangerous assignments. By taking balanced risks and remaining focused on getting the right shots, he's progressed his work into one of the world's most celebrated portfolios of adventure photography. He's compiled some of the best of that portfolio into his new book, “Wayward.”In addition to his surf and expedition shooting, Chris has also built a reputation as “that guy that goes to Iceland a lot.” He's made more than 50 trips there, including a recent winter biking excursion across the entire country from north the south. He's chronicled his work in, among other ways, a photographic essay book, “At Glacier's End,” and a short film he produced called “Innur,” which documents the relationship between a father, his son, and Iceland's toe-chilling surfing culture. He discusses the motivation behind all of this work in today's episode. In Hot Takes, Tim and Eben discuss the seesaw relationship between giving and receiving rides to the airport. This leads to a talk on whether or not airport parking is bullsh*t. The pair close with their thoughts on whether or not you're actually supposed to turn your laptop off during takeoff and landing – and still don't have a definitive answer.Relevant links: Chris Burkard Photography “Wayward: Stories and Photographs” by Chris Burkard “At Glacier's End” by Chris Burkard Chris Burkard Shares Rare Images of Iceland's Glacial Rivers in a Stunning New Book Photographer Chris Burkard on how to become an adventure photographer Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown News of the day: Everything you need to know about tipping hotels Unpopular Opinion: Hotel Minibars Are a Scam and You Should Never Use Them
