For years now Canada's been badgered to pony up, and spend more money on the military. Those calls have come from our actual military itself, our NATO allies, and more recently the U.S. President.Well it looks like Mark Carney is going to pull out the credit card, and commit to spending an extra $9.3-billion on the armed forces by March, bumping our military spending up to two per cent of Canada's entire GDP.Carney has also pledged to end this country's reliance on the U.S. for equipment by diverting billions of dollars in spending to Canadian manufacturers. The timing awkwardly coincided with news about an embarrassing foray into Canadian military procurement: our plans to buy a fleet of F-35 fighter jets from America that the auditor general reported was billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule. So, what is Carney's vision for the future of our military? And how serious are the threats against Canada?David Pugliese, defence reporter with the Ottawa Citizen, talks us through it.For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has unveiled her first major spending review, pledging tens of billions in additional funding for public services, including £29 billion a year for the NHS, a £4.5 billion boost to the schools budget, and a rise in defence spending to 2.6% of GDP by 2027. But Reeves stopped short of explaining how the government will actually fund these ambitious commitments, fuelling Tory warnings of looming tax hikes. Shadow chancellor Mel Stride accused her of having “completely lost control”, calling it a “spend now, tax later” plan that kicks tough choices down the road for Labour. So how will the Government balance the books? And what will the spending review mean for you? Camilla is outside Parliament with Reform's Richard Tice who says Reeves is ‘cratering the economy' and is obsessed with his party. Plus Tory Andrew Griffith on why his party are disowning Liz Truss's mini budget and Labour's Chris Curtis on productivity in the NHS. Send us a textWhat would it look like to spend an entire day exclusively in Galaxy's Edge as a dedicated Star Wars fan? We tackle this question by creating our own immersive itineraries focused solely on Batuu, breaking down every experience, meal, and purchase along the way.Our detailed plans take you from rope drop to park close, maximizing every moment in this meticulously crafted Star Wars land. We start with early morning strategies – should you head straight to Rise of the Resistance or save it for later? – before mapping out perfect timing for iconic experiences like building your own lightsaber at Savi's Workshop ($219.99) and creating a droid companion at Droid Depot ($119.99).Food and beverages play a crucial role in any Galaxy's Edge adventure. We share why the Ronto Morning Wrap makes the perfect breakfast ("hands down my favorite breakfast in the park"), when to schedule your Oga's Cantina reservations for maximum enjoyment, and whether those colorful milk concoctions are worth trying. From the Andorian Fried Tip-yip to the signature Jedi Mind Trick cocktail, we cover all the must-try consumables that enhance the immersive experience.Beyond rides and food, we discuss shopping strategies at Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities, character encounters with Kylo Ren and Rey, and how to experience the land's special ambiance as day turns to night. Most importantly, we break down the complete cost – revealing how a full day exclusively in Galaxy's Edge can easily reach $800-1200 when including all experiences, meals, and souvenirs. Is it worth the splurge for the dedicated Star Wars fan who may not care about the rest of Disneyland? We think you might find the Force is strong with this particular adventure. Here's who we are and what is in store for you

Hello, fabulous fashion friends! Happy FRI-YAYYYYYY!! Welcome back to the Fashion Crimes Podcast, your weekly dose of style, inspiration, and all things fashion. Featuring your favorite personal stylist and the hostess with the mostest, Holly Katz, we are here to show you how to look chic without breaking the bank. Wanna see us in the flesh? Check out our YouTube channel for the video of this episode! This week, we're diving into a super fun topic – How to Mix High and Low End Pieces like a pro! We are about to give you all the secrets on how to elevate your wardrobe with a perfect blend of luxury AND affordable items. Trust us, by the end of this episode, you'll know exactly how to rock designer accessories with budget-friendly staples. So grab your favorite earphones, turn up the volume, and let's gooooooo! Outline of Key Topics Discussed: 1. Why Mixing High and Low Works o Create a balanced, effortlessly chic look that reflects your unique style. o Moderation is key. You don't need to wear all high-end or all low-end pieces. o The magic of blending designer pieces with more affordable finds to achieve that high-low vibe. 2. Identifying High-End vs. Low-End Pieces o High-end items: Designer accessories (bags, shoes, jewelry) and classic investment pieces. o Low-end items: Budget-friendly but stylish basics like tees, denim, and everyday items that don't need to break the bank. 3. High-End Accessories: The Key to Elevating Any Outfit o By spending your hard-earned dollars on high-end designer accessories, these are the staples that support and elevate any outfit. o Designer pieces should be used to create a polished, sophisticated look that will "level up" your lower-end pieces. o Example: Pair a $5 vintage baseball hat with a designer handbag and shoes for the ultimate high-low combo. 4. Low-End Staples: The Foundation of a Flexible Wardrobe o Find affordable yet stylish options like Levi's jeans, vintage tees, or a well-cut jacket that won't drain your wallet. o HOT TIP! Mixing costume with your real jewelry makes all of your jewelry look more refined. o Example: A vintage rock tee layered with a blazer, paired with designer shoes with an affordable statement earring: priceless! 5. Where to Shop for the Best High-Low Mix o Check out designer second-hand marketplaces like The RealReal or local consignment shops in your area for amazing finds. o Vintage stores and online sites like ThredUp can carry high-quality, less expensive options. o Shop strategically for sales or shop off-season to make sure you're investing in pieces that will last. 6. When to Splurge o Invest in timeless pieces that hold their value over time, like a designer handbag or quality jackets and scarves. o Always shop with fit and quality in mind—don't just buy for the label. o Think about longevity and versatility when selecting high-end pieces to mix into your wardrobe. Final Words: Mixing high and low-end pieces is not only fun, but it's a savvy way to build a wardrobe that looks unexpected, sophisticated, and totally unique. Remember, fashion is about creating a look that feels true to YOU—whether it's from a luxury designer or a thrift store gem, mix it up and make it yours. And as always, we are here to help guide you through the process. You can give this a try, no matter your budget or current style. Hey friend! Do you ever wonder which items you should splurge on (and which to save) when you're decorating or furnishing your home? This common question is something we're talking about in today's epsiode. What home decorating items should I splurge on and which should I save money on? Saving and splurging is all based off of personal finances, priorities, need, design style/personal preference, but how I base my decisions currently, in this season of life... The four items I would SPLURGE on: 1. Anchor pieces: These are the pieces that are too costly to replace every couple of years. They generally need to stand the test of time so having higher quality (= higher price point) can be beneficial. 2. Electrical: Unless I felt confident changing out my own overhead light fixtures or hiding cords, I would without a doubt splurge on this expense. Changing your overhead light fixtures is a relatively inexpensive way to add A LOT of character and personality to your home. 3. Hiring for built-ins: Built-ins, when done well, instantly elevate your home making it look more finished with character and charm. If building something is not within your wheelhouse, this is an expense worth splurging on! 4. Updating foundational pieces: I am not referring to the foundation of your building/home. But I am referring to the foundation of your cohesive design plan and there are two foundational items within your homes that SHOULD be paid attention to: your floors and your walls. If one of those is 'off' it will likely throw off you entire design. Because it's that important, choices you bring in should be filtered through the lense of "Does this work with my foundation - floors/walls." If the flooring is disjointed, saving and investing there will reap BIG design rewards (and re-sale too!). Need help knowing what to save or splurge on? On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson talks to three Golden State insiders who want to help you get the most out of your next trip to the state—no matter your budget. First, Johnson chats with Nina Ruggiero, Senior Editorial Director at Travel + Leisure. Ruggiero starts off by sharing the latest lodging travel trends and what she looks for in a great hotel. “Yes, you want a nice hotel, but you want to feel like you're actually in the destination that you're in,” she explains. Ruggiero then dives deep on her top picks for both high-end lodgings and wallet-conscious accommodations in West Hollywood, the Central Coast, Laguna Beach, and Palm Springs. Next, Johnson is joined by Farley Elliott, Southern California Bureau Chief at SFGate. Farley breaks down the best splurge-worthy dining spots in San Diego and offers up some wallet-friendly finds that still pack a punch. “If you're on a budget, I think most corner taco shops that you stop into [in San Diego] are going to treat you pretty right,” notes Elliott. He also delves into Michelin-starred cuisine and other high-end spots in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Santa Barbara. Finally, Johnson sits down with Carrie Cramer, an award-winning celebrity stylist and personal shopper. Cramer shares how to navigate California's shopping scene, from the high-end boutiques of Rodeo Drive and South Coast Plaza to local gems in Carmel-by-the-Sea and San Francisco.

Welcome back to Fratello Talks, folks! What's the best way to spend your hard-earned cash as a watch collector? Should you splurge on many or save for one special piece? One method satisfies curiosity and is fulfilling for some, but it can also leave you with your head spinning, a full watch box, and an empty wallet. The other limits you to fewer watches, but those can, in turn, be more expensive, rare, and "special." This is the topic of discussion for today's podcast. Nacho is joined by Daan and Thomas, who provide their thoughts on the matter and share their experience. If this dilemma has ever haunted you, be sure to tune in; this one's for you!

We had to break in on a Saturday with this very cool conversation with Melissa Clark. Melissa is a prolific cookbook author who wears several hats at the New York Times, where she's currently a food reporter, recipe columnist, and the interim restaurant critic, serving alongside Priya Krishna. We've really enjoyed Melissa's recent string of reviews, most of all her latest report from New York City and Napa, where she gave Thomas Keller's pioneering restaurants, Per Se and the French Laundry, a fresh set of eyes. The review is a wild ride, and the internet was all over it. How did Melissa find her meals, and what does the current state of the Keller empire say about the modern age of fine dining? We go over it all in this great talk.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE? Drop us a review on Apple, or star us on Spotify. We'd love to hear from you.
