Not all fairytales have happy endings. In the home of rugby, on the hallowed ground of Twickenham, these mighty women represented Canada, and left it all on the pitch...but it wasn't meant to be, as they came up short against the might of England, as the Red Roses were victorious, 33-13, and lifted the Women's Rugby World Cup at home. But one defeat does not undo all the effort and successes elsewhere, as this tournament has proven that women's rugby - née, women's sport - is worthy of investment and growth, and that Canada's women are eager to bring the fight, as eyes turn to Australia in 2029.And one victory is certain - after years of us saying so, Sophie de Goede is finally recognised as the best Women's Rugby Player in the world for 2025.
Two French players are appealing bans that would rule them out of the rest of the Rugby World Cup, and one of them is for biting another player. Sports reporter Bridget Tunnicliffe spoke to Lisa Owen.
Maggie Alphonsi is a broadcaster and former rugby player. She was part of the England team which took home the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup and by the time she retired she'd won 74 caps for her country.Maggie was brought up in north London and when she was 14 her PE teacher suggested she give the sport of rugby union a try. Maggie joined her local amateur club Saracens and relished the freedom she felt at being able to capitalise on her power and strength on the pitch. Her first chance to play for England came when she was 19. Maggie started out as a number 12 and then later changed position to become a number seven or openside flanker. This role allowed her to showcase her tackling skills. She was part of the England team which won seven consecutive Six Nations tournaments and retired shortly after winning the Women's Rugby World Cup.She became the first female former player to commentate on the men's game and to join the Rugby Football Union's Council. In 2012 she was appointed an MBE for services to rugby. In February 2019, Gareth joined the podcast to discuss being a professional rugby union player with Gloucester. The idea of identity and career shift has fascinated me for years - particularly, as a sports journalist, the shift pro athletes have to make into a new life. Hope you enjoy this one - hope for all of us contemplating career change. Also, towards the end of the conversation some great tips on pensions and financial management.

Ed Jackson says he has lived two lives. For ten years he was a professional rugby player, who was defined by his physicality and performance. But in 2017, at a family friend's barbecue, an accident ended this old life forever. He dived into a swimming pool, not realising it was three feet deep. On the way to the hospital he had to be resuscitated three times. Not long after, he was told he'd never walk again.Incredibly, just three years from this moment, Ed was standing on the world's highest trekking peak, Aconagua. He shares this rollercoaster story, from the initial devastation of his prognosis to the slow flicker of hope, from long rehabilitation to a level of recovery he didn't think was possible. It was a fundraising expedition to Snowdon that then sent his life in an entirely new direction, when he saw the opportunity to use his experience to help others in a similar boat. Today I have P&PA Coach Ryan K. Reynolds with me as we chat about her journey as a pro Rubgy player, firefighter, and advocate for women in sports and first responder careers. As a pioneer in the Rugby world, Ryan saw first-hand the growth of women in the sport, having had the opportunity to be on the Olympic team. She decided to use her athletic skills and talents later in life to become a first responder and is now working as a firefighter for her local community. Her mission and hope is to be a resource for women to feel empowered to participate in the career AND still have the goals and dreams to become a mother. She is a resource for the women around her as a P&PA Coach, as well as in the Wellness and Fitness Program within her department. Ryan is an inspiration to all around her. For the first time, four mums are speaking out about what it was like to be at the centre of a conspiracy that went viral, even reaching the USA. Accused: The Hampstead Paedophile Hoax is a new documentary that looks at what happened to them. Director Emily Turner and mum ‘Anna' (not her real name) join Emma Barnett to talk about why they wanted to speak out and share this story. The photograph gracing the front pages this morning of the Princess of Wales with her children, reportedly taken by Prince William - was the first image of Kate to be released by Kensington Palace since her planned abdominal surgery in January. Photo agencies, including Reuters and Associated Press, have retracted the photo over concerns it has been "manipulated". Emma speaks to Alexandra Shulman - Former Editor of British Vogue and journalist - who knows Catherine, the Princess of Wales - from having advised her about designers for her wedding dress through to their work together when she placed her on the front cover of British Vogue's centerary issue. Catherine, the Princess of Wales later released a statement apologising "for any confusion" the photograph caused. It continued: "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing". In 1929 Jennie Lee, a miner's daughter from Scotland, became a socialist MP at the age of only 24 – at a time when she wasn't even legally old enough to vote. Married to the Welsh Labour politician Aneurin “Nye” Bevan, founder of the NHS, his life and their relationship is currently on stage at the National Theatre in London in a new play called Nye. Actor Sharon Small, who plays the woman considered by many a pioneer for women in politics, is in the Woman's Hour studio. She and Emma are joined by historian, Lyndsey Jenkins, lecturer in modern history at Oxford University. The Women's Six Nations begins later this month. Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy are taking part as well as England who are looking to build on the glory of 2023, when they sealed the grand slam in front of nearly 60,000 spectators at Twickenham, a record crowd for a women's game. We'll continue to cover the Six Nations as it gets underway but to kick us off Emma is joined by England Rugby player Meg Jones.Presented by Emma Barnett Producer: Louise Corley Studio Engingeer: Donald MacDonald
