Ed Jackson says he has lived two lives. For ten years he was a professional rugby player, who was defined by his physicality and performance. But in 2017, at a family friend's barbecue, an accident ended this old life forever. He dived into a swimming pool, not realising it was three feet deep. On the way to the hospital he had to be resuscitated three times. Not long after, he was told he'd never walk again.Incredibly, just three years from this moment, Ed was standing on the world's highest trekking peak, Aconagua. He shares this rollercoaster story, from the initial devastation of his prognosis to the slow flicker of hope, from long rehabilitation to a level of recovery he didn't think was possible. It was a fundraising expedition to Snowdon that then sent his life in an entirely new direction, when he saw the opportunity to use his experience to help others in a similar boat. Now, as co-founder of the Millimetres 2 Mountains foundation, such is the purpose he has found, he says he no longer regrets the accident that led him here. Hosted on Acast. Ed Jackson is a bloody inspiration. He was a professional rugby player before his career was cut short when he dived into a swimming pool and broke his neck. He nearly died and was told he would not walk again. But Ed worked his butt off and confounded the critics, going on to make a remarkable recovery - and has since developed something of a penchant for climbing mountains. And now, a movie has been made about his remarkable story, called The Mountain Within Me. It's currently in UK cinemas, and I can't recommend going to see it enough. This is a rerelease of the first conversation Ed and I had a few years ago, and I am chuffed that his epic story continues to develop in such impactful ways. Join us for an incredibly moving episode with Sam Smith, a former professional rugby player for Harlequins and Worcester Warriors, as he shares his journey on his first podcast. Sam reflects on his early life in a happy, loving family home. At the age of 11, his mum became ill, and he learned to develop a sixth sense to gauge what he would find behind the door when returning from school. He was always striving to make his family happy and constantly felt like he was failing. This pattern of being a "doer" and pleasing people defined much of his life. His self-worth became deeply intertwined with his identity as a rugby player, leading to immense pressure and a need to please his coaches and parents. Sam candidly shares moments of disillusionment, like spending Wednesdays hungover in bed—an alarming sign for a professional athlete that shouldn't have been ignored. Due to an injury, Sam had to retire from rugby early, and he dived into entrepreneurship, turning his love of coffee into a successful business. However, did it provide Sam with what he was looking for? Despite knowing his parents were supportive, he struggled to find the words to ask for help. Post-rugby life brought anger and frustration. When he asked for help, he received sterile CBT sessions, leading him to believe he was the problem. The turning point came when he met Hugh, someone who helped make him feel normal and understand he wasn't alone. Now, Sam emphasises the importance of purpose—something you feel in your bones and soul. He aims to help others wake up to the stories they tell themselves, leading to life-changing realisations. Tune in to hear Sam's honest reflections on life before, during, and after sports, finding true purpose, and the courage to ask for help. His story has it all: laughter, tears, resilience, self-awareness, and the magic of discovering what truly matters. In episode #224 of Demystifying Mental Toughness, I share part of a conversation with Aaron Walsh a Mental Performance Coach with many Elite Professional Rugby Players. We discuss whether elite professional rugby union players view mental toughness as something that they can develop, our role as Sports Psychology practitioners in measuring performance as well as coaches influence in the development of psychological characteristics and skills. Creativity is essential to thrive as a Sports Psychology Practitioner or Mental Performance Coach. Measuring the impact of our work as a practitioner is vital when working in a team setting. For the first time, four mums are speaking out about what it was like to be at the centre of a conspiracy that went viral, even reaching the USA. Accused: The Hampstead Paedophile Hoax is a new documentary that looks at what happened to them. Director Emily Turner and mum ‘Anna' (not her real name) join Emma Barnett to talk about why they wanted to speak out and share this story. The photograph gracing the front pages this morning of the Princess of Wales with her children, reportedly taken by Prince William - was the first image of Kate to be released by Kensington Palace since her planned abdominal surgery in January. Photo agencies, including Reuters and Associated Press, have retracted the photo over concerns it has been "manipulated". Emma speaks to Alexandra Shulman - Former Editor of British Vogue and journalist - who knows Catherine, the Princess of Wales - from having advised her about designers for her wedding dress through to their work together when she placed her on the front cover of British Vogue's centerary issue. Catherine, the Princess of Wales later released a statement apologising "for any confusion" the photograph caused. It continued: "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing". In 1929 Jennie Lee, a miner's daughter from Scotland, became a socialist MP at the age of only 24 – at a time when she wasn't even legally old enough to vote. Married to the Welsh Labour politician Aneurin “Nye” Bevan, founder of the NHS, his life and their relationship is currently on stage at the National Theatre in London in a new play called Nye. Actor Sharon Small, who plays the woman considered by many a pioneer for women in politics, is in the Woman's Hour studio. She and Emma are joined by historian, Lyndsey Jenkins, lecturer in modern history at Oxford University. The Women's Six Nations begins later this month. Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy are taking part as well as England who are looking to build on the glory of 2023, when they sealed the grand slam in front of nearly 60,000 spectators at Twickenham, a record crowd for a women's game. We'll continue to cover the Six Nations as it gets underway but to kick us off Emma is joined by England Rugby player Meg Jones.Presented by Emma Barnett Producer: Louise Corley Studio Engingeer: Donald MacDonald

I speak to professional Rugby Player, and Junior Doctor Simi Pam, who after realising the serious harm the sport was inflicting on her natural coils, was forced to make serious changes to protect her afro, leading her on a journey where everything from her femininity and sense of self to her understanding of what professional help was available was challenged.Playing any sport will always have a natural impact on how you are able to care for and maintain your natural hair, especially when you have afro and curly hair, however when playing contact or collision sports such as Rugby at a professional level, the potential for damage only further increases, threatening over time to cause irreparable harm that can never be repaired.
