For Episode 70, we return to South Africa for the first time in almost four years, and we do so in grand fashion—by visiting Jordan Wines Estate in Stellenbosch. Owned by husband-and-wife duo Kathy and Gary Jordan, this estate is a benchmark of excellence, seamlessly blending tradition, science, and sustainability in winemaking. In this episode, we explore Jordan's Timepiece Range, a tribute to their heritage and old vines, and discuss how Gary's background in geology has shaped their vineyard's unique terroir. Kathy shares insights on economics in wine marketing, while Gary reveals their bold approach to combat climate change, including pioneering plantings of Assyrtiko, Mencía, and Xinomavro. We also dive into winemaking as an art versus a science, the evolution of consumer preferences, and the challenges South African vintners face today—from climate adaptation to international trade barriers. Plus, an exclusive look at their UK project, Mousehall Country Estate, where they are crafting world-class still wines in England. An inspiring conversation with two visionaries shaping the future of wine. Don't miss it! SummaryIn this conversation, Dr. Vic Manzo interviews Gary Jordan about the importance of reconnecting with the source and discovering and utilizing one's natural skills. They discuss the development of the ego and the disconnection from the source that occurs as we grow up. They also explore the illusion of happiness and the never-ending search for external solutions. The conversation emphasizes the journey of self-discovery and the pain and resistance that come with self-reflection. They highlight the importance of teaching children to reconnect with their spirit and self and the joy of doing what comes naturally.TakeawaysReconnecting with the source and discovering and utilizing one's natural skills is essential for true fulfillment and satisfaction in life. The development of the ego and the disconnection from the source occur as we grow up and develop our identity. The pursuit of happiness as a goal is misguided, as happiness is an experience that comes and goes.Self-reflection and the journey of self-discovery can be challenging and painful, but they lead to greater connection and satisfaction.Teaching children to reconnect with their spirit and self is crucial for their overall well-being and fulfillment.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background00:31 Gary's Journey and Discovering Natural Skills03:31 The Development of the Ego and Disconnecting from the Source04:15 The Illusion of Happiness and the Never-Ending Search06:04 The Journey of Self-Discovery and Reconnecting with the Soul07:16 The Role of the Unconscious Mind in Creating True Change08:11 The Limitations of External Solutions09:24 The Pain of Self-Reflection and the Journey to Reconnection10:22 The Resistance to Self-Reflection and the Fear of Pain11:18 Waiting for Crisis to Initiate Change12:19 The Disconnection from Spirit and the Importance of Reconnecting13:17 The Development of the Ego and the Loss of Connection14:12 The Pursuit of Happiness and the Experience of Pain15:46 Happiness as an Experience, Not a Goal16:14 The Journey of Self-Discovery and Finding Natural Skills19:30 Teaching Children to Reconnect with Spirit and Self20:00 The Joy of Doing What Comes Naturally23:23 Gary's Work and How to Connect25:42 Closing RemarksWho is Gary Jordan Ph.D.?Gary Jordan, Ph.D., has over 40 years of experience in clinical psychology, behavior assessment, individual development, and coaching. This is the wrap up to my series on perception, which continues to be a prominent issue for me amongst the whole concept of personal development. As long as we perceive our reality to be factual reality, we are greatly limited and handicapped. I brought on an expert on perception, Lynda-Ross Vega. She and clinical psychologist Gary Jordan developed the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. Their book is Unlock the Power of Your Perception. After talking in depth with Lynda-Ross, then talking further in part two of the series with my brother, Jared Angaza, I've pulled out 5 aspects of perspective style I'm working to learn from. We've been looking at the idea of an inherent perception style. Meaning, that you have a hard wired perception style. You will naturally experience life a certain way. The expert I brought in to discuss this is Lynda-Ross Vega. Lynda-Ross spent her life in the high end business world and partnered with clinical psychologist Gary Jordan to research and create the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. Their book, and my muse, is Unlock the Power of Your Perception. I discussed the concept with Lynda-Ross in the previous episode. Here I bring my brother, Jared Angaza, in to discuss this further. We accept the concept of an inherent perception style. Jared actually has twins and testifies to them having a different perception style, right out of the womb. However, we agree on the ability to understand our inherent perception style, not judge it as right or wrong, and wield it according to what will serve ourselves, others, and the situation best. Listen in to see if you agree and are game to understand and leverage your perception style. How To Discern Objective Reality By Understanding Your Inherent Perception Style There you are in a situation with some other people. Something happens. People react and respond differently. Later in the retelling of what happened you hear someone telling a story that is incredibly off base. Someone else chimes in with, “That's not what happened, this is!” And you find yourself wanting to tell what really happened and your exasperated at everyone else's misinterpretation of what went down. The issue at hand is…we think what we experience is what really happened. It's fact. And guess what, that's how everyone else feels as well. If you're solving a crime, you need to get down to what really happened. In regular life however, you'll never prove anything and it seldom matters. Things happen and we all have an inherent Perspective Style we filter the happening through. This is how we experience the world. And it's not fact, it's experience. My guest and expert on this subject is Lynda-Ross Vega. Lynda Ross spent her life in the high end business world and partnered with clinical psychologist Gary Jordan to research and create the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. When their book, Unlock the Power of Your Perception, came across my desk, I knew I wanted to discuss it on the show. We all naturally believe our perception of the world and events is fact, when in truth, nobody can claim fact, and if you want healthy relationships, you'll want to hear what Lynda-Ross and I cover in this show. KeywordsResilience - Perpetual Style Theory - Perception - SensesIn this episode of Resilience Unravelled, Dr Russell Thackeray talks to Lynda-Ross Vega, and Gary Jordan about their Perceptual Style Theory which focuses on a strengths-oriented approach that helps people understand what they do well. Lynda-Ross has over 35 years of experience in senior management and as a business owner/entrepreneur and is an expert at harnessing the power of perception to help individuals and organisations implement change, empower collaboration, and develop talent. Gary has over 40 years of experience in clinical psychology, behavioral assessment, individual development, and coaching. He earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology-Berkeley in 1980. In 1983 he joined forces with Lynda-Ross Vega and created Perceptual Style Theory™, a revolutionary psychological assessment system that provides the answers for people to tap into their natural strengths and find more meaning and satisfaction in life. Perceptual Style Theory identifies six different styles based on how people perceive the world through their senses. The six styles are vision, goals, methods, adjustments, flow, and activity and each style has relationships with its neighbouring styles as well as opposites and one-offs. Activity is described as being focused on people and networks while building meaning through personal experience. Adjustments make meaning through observation and see complexity in things. Each style has its own unique characteristics and strengths and Lynda and Gary emphasise the importance of self-awareness in understanding one's own style and how to use it effectively. They also suggest that understanding other people's styles can improve communication and relationships.
