Congratulations are in order for Conor Niland and Gavin Cooney, who today won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award for their superb book 'The Racket'.This is just the third time Irish authors have won the prestigious award. Upon the book's release back in June, Conor dropped by the Off The Ball Breakfast studio to talk about his life on the road as a professional tennis player, his close-up encounters with some future greats, and his moments on the big stages of SW19 and Flushing Meadows during the summer of 2011. And as part of a FREE super bonus pod celebrating Conor's win, we've added his July discussion with Jenny Claffey, also from Off The Ball Breakfast.
The Asian swing is in full flow and what a treat we had in Beijing as Carlos Alcaraz battled back from the brink to defeat World Number 1 Jannik Sinner in a final set tiebreak. And that wasn't even the biggest news of the week for the Italian who expressed his 'surprise' at the World Anti-Doping Agency looking for a lengthy ban over his positive drug tests.Elsewhere in Beijing, the WTA has reached the quarter-finals stage as Sabalenka continues to run riot whilst Paula Badosa is also making a charge up the ranking towards the Top 10. But there was despair for Naomi Osaka who retired against Coco Gauff with a back injury. And finally, there was more positive news for Wimbledon as they got the green light for a 39 court expansion with their ambition to create a three week festival of tennis in SW19. As always, Joel and Chris delve into the mailbag to talk Saudi exhibitions and one of our trickiest Mysterious Players yet.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Day 9 was a historic one for our Italian-Ghanaian sister Jasmine Paolini who secured her place in the semi-finals with a fine 6-2, 6-1 victory over 19th seed Emma Navarro. The 28-year-old becomes the first Italian woman to reach the last four at SW19. Paolini is one match away from her second consecutive Grand Slam final but will have to get past Donna Vekic on Thursday. Listen out for presser snippets from a typically upbeat Paolini. Tumaini also shares some nice anecdotes from this year's Championships.

And Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner remain on course for the much anticipated semi final by continuing their good form with wins over challengers Ugo Humbert and Ben Shelton respectively.Donna Vekic also fought her way through a tough battle with Paula Badosa to break new ground at Wimbledon for the first time, reaching the Quarterfinal stage.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Day 7 was an eventful one, starting with the women's match of the tournament thus far – Madison Keys vs Jasmine Paolini, where Keys unfortunately retired due to a left thigh injury. We then discussed Paolini's next opponent for the quarter-finals, Emma Navarro who beat Coco Gauff 6-4 6-3, ending Gauff's singles journey at SW19. We also get into Ben Shelton's straight-sets defeat to world No 1 Jannik Sinner on No.1 Court – the American had not had a day off coming into the fourth-round. Carlos Alcaraz and Frances Tiafoe's five set thriller lit up Wimbledon on a very wet and gloomy day in SW19. We hear from Carlos Alcaraz in his own words on why he is SO and SO tough to beat in 5th sets as well as Jasmine Paolini on her improving relationship on grass.Emma Raduncau was the British highlight of the day and her relentless dismantling of Maria Sakkari harked back to that US Open 2021 run when she defeated the same opponent in the semi-finals. We hear from Emma on how this performance ranks in her most fun matches and also her next opponent Lulu Sun on her fascinating background from New Zealand to Shanghai to Switzerland and even her UK connection. As always Joel and Chris look towards the order of play and make their predictions with clashes like Rybakina and Wozniacki as well as Cam Norrie playing Alexander Zverev on Centre Court.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Day 5 was a washout, for the most part, in terms of play on the outside courts but there were some top performances on No 1 and Centre Court where Jasmine Paolini and Coco Gauff picked up wins as well as Madison Keys (on Court 17). Frances Tiafoe versus Carlos Alcaraz lived up to the billing on Centre as the pair provided another five-set thriller. And Gael Monfils came up short against Grigor Dimitrov but was happy with his run at SW19 where he likes “the vibes”. Listen out for interview snippets from Paolini, Keys, Monfils and Tiafoe. Looking ahead to Day 6, Ben Shelton resumes against Denis Shapovalov and Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard play their third-round matches.
Alexei Popyrin and Alex de Minaur progress at SW19, Thanasi Kokkinakis retires hurt and Adam Walton shows he's on an upward trajectory.
Day 4 was a good one in terms of weather, matches and wins for Madison Keys, Arthur Fils, Gael Monfils, Ben Shelton and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Robin Montgomery's Wimbledon came to an end though but the 19-year-old qualifier gave a good account of herself on and off the court at SW19. Listen out for interview snippets from Keys, Fils, Shelton and Mpetshi Perricard. And looking ahead to Day 5, Frances Tiafoe gets his Centre Court wish, while Jasmine Paolini, Monfils and Coco Gauff all play on No 1 Court.

With their preamble out of the way, Ben and Tumaini Carayol (*who is audible in this fixed, reuploaded audio!) dig into the 2023 Wimbledon women's and men's draws to discuss the favorites and other notable names among the 256 players competing for the singles crowns at SW19. Both respective top seeds, Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz, have their stocks rising after strong grass lead-ups. Have they improved enough to contend for the Wimbledon title? We discuss the bottom-heavy women's draw, the continuing joy of Venus Williams, the struggles of Matteo Berrettini (who was the one player in his generation who seemed like a natural on grass), the retirements of Anett Kontaveit and Milos Raonic, the opportunity for Jannik Sinner, and the enduring juggernaut that is Novak Djokovic. Enjoy!

The Wimbledon Draw is out!Fresh off the back of a trip to The Boodles earlier in the week, Kim and Chris dust off their Wimbledon tents, get their strawberries out and sink their Pimms-stained teeth into the 2023 Wimbledon Singles draws, looking at projected quarter final match ups, top seeds' pathways and first round highlight matches. They consider the draws quarter by quarter, make some potentially regrettable predictions and also reveal the anticipated Collect a Set player picks for this year's Wimbledon edition. In addition, the latest Wimbledon poster art generates some controversy at Tennis Weekly HQ and we hear from Felix Auger-Aliassime and Borna Coric about which player, past or present, they would join the Wimbledon Queue for.Danish joy is also abundant with the news that Caroline Wozniacki will be returning to the tennis court in the near future.__________________
In this episode of Tennis and Bagels, Andre and Vansh look at the performances of Carlos Alcaraz and Petra Kvitova in particular, as they shape up their games to the Grass Court Slam. Kvitova, a former World No.2 and two-time Wimbledon champion, showed once again signs of why she's had the career she's had so far, but since winning at SW19 in 2014 she has not done so well in London. Could this be the year?Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz has finally completed the surface set, winning his first grass court title at Queen's - and what a fantastic week that was for the World No.1. While Alcaraz does not have the experience on grass to be considered a heavy favourite for Wimbledon, he has simply amazed us with his ability to learn and make adjustments so quickly. What can't Alcaraz do??In other news, the always mercurial Jelena Ostapenko managed to once again get her hands on a trophy by playing her best tennis - an Avatar state where she becomes virtually unbeatable, but her dips in match can be too costly. And Alexander Bublik put his mind into it and showed why he's one of the most talented players on tour - he seems to only lack the motivation to break into the Elite of the game. Though a Halle title might not be the best stepping stone for Wimbledon unless you're named Roger Federer...Talk to us on social media :)Follow Tennis and Bagels: Twitter @TennisAndBAGELSAndre Rolemberg @RolembergAndreVansh Vermani @vanshv2kOwen Lewis @tennisnationCheck out Popcorn Tennis!Twitter: @Popcorn_Tennis1Website: popcorntennis.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels.
