George Bellshaw and James Gray look back at men's semi-final day at Wimbledon, in which Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner booked a rerun of the French Open final. Novak Djokovic admitted afterwards that age has caught up with him and that he keeps turning up to matches against Sinner and Alcaraz with the tank half-empty... ...but the Serb says it is not his last Wimbledon Meanwhile Jannik Sinner is a fourth-round lucky loser into the SW19 final for the first time... ...but what would have happened if Grigor Dimitrov HAD beaten him in the last 16? Carlos Alcaraz produces a near-perfect performance, barring one brain-fart service game, to down Taylor Fritz The American still has an unimpressive record against top 10 players at grand slams and must be wondering when these two will stop winning And Andre Agassi was a welcome surprise commentator on the first semi-final, outshining Andrew Castle and Tim Henman with his pithy and analytical breakdowns: https://inews.co.uk/sport/tennis/andre-agassi-bbc-coverage-tennis-watchable-3801983 Learn more about your ad choices. James Gray and George Bellshaw are back on the microphones at a pleasantly early hour after four relatively straightforward quarter-finals on the second Wednesday of Wimbledon. - Novak Djokovic "played with his food" by dropping the first set to Flavio Cobolli but came through in four sets, despite a nasty looking fall behind the baseline - Iga Swiatek is doing her best to grow her reputation in Britain with five straight match wins at Wimbledon, into her first SW19 semi-final - Jannik Sinner's elbow seems to be fine, judging by the smacking he handed a downtrodden Ben Shelton - Mirra Andreeva is out, beaten by Belinda Bencic, who had a baby just 15 months ago Learn more about your ad choices. Day 8 delivered drama and breakthroughs at SW19. Join Joel and Kim as they wrap up the day's proceedings at Tennis Weekly HQ. Novak Djokovic clawed back from a 1–6 opening set to defeat Alex de Minaur in four, sustaining his run toward a record 25th Major. Jannik Sinner, despite trailing two sets, advanced after Grigor Dimitrov heartbreakingly retired with a pectoral injury—a win Sinner called bittersweet. Meanwhile, Ben Shelton and Italy's Flavio Cobolli secured their first-ever quarter-final spots with impressive victories over Lorenzo Sonego and Marin Čilić.On the women's side, Belinda Bencic made a strong post-maternity return by upsetting seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova, Mirra Andreeva became the youngest quarter-finalist since 2007 with a compelling win over Emma Navarro, and Iga Świątek continued cruising past a below-par Clara Tauson. Liudmila Samsonova also sent the young Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro packing in two tight sets. They also look ahead to the start of the Quarterfinal action on Day 9 which sees home hope Cameron Norrie take on the two time defending Champion Carlos Alcaraz on Centre Court, and Aryna Sabalenka up against tour veteran Laura Siegemund in the German's first Grand Slam singles QF.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection and Pure Drive (2025) is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Before we get into the action, massive big up to everyone who showed up and showed out for us at Boxpark Croydon on Sunday (Day 7). We had a blast and it was a pleasure meeting you all. Ben “10” Shelton is through to his first Wimbledon quarter–final after a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 victory over Lorenzo Sonego. The head-to-head now reads 4-1 to the American. The 10th seed made a sluggish start and dropped his first set of the tournament to the Italian who he was facing for the third Grand Slam in a row. Shelton recovered well in the second set, winning it 6-1. At 1-1, Shelton held from 15-40 down and took over after that, breaking Sonego in the next game, then holding with ease before breaking the Italian again en route to securing it. The third set was a much tighter affair. The pair exchanged breaks at 3-3, then both held until 6-6. It was one-way traffic in the tiebreak with Shelton wrapping it up 7-1. The fourth set followed the third, both men were holding comfortably until Sonego, serving to stay in the match at 5-6, fumbled. Shelton hit a clean return winner at the start of the game and would eventually break the Italian for a fourth time to seal victory. Jannik Sinner or Grigor Dimitrov await in the last eight. Friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol joins in Lucy's absence to go through the day's action. Hailey Baptiste versus Mirra Andreeva did not feel like a 6-1, 6-3 match. The American, playing on No 1 Court for the first time in her career, made a nervy start but tightened things up in the second set. Baptiste though can be proud of her third-round run at Wimbledon on debut. The 23-year-old American is trending in the right direction in the rankings and has “a game made for the natural surfaces”, according to Tumaini. The Guardian man also shares his thoughts on Iga Swiatek-Danielle Collins, which was the match he was assigned to for the day, and also talks about the Aryna Sabalenka-Emma Raducanu third-round match that took place on Day 5. In the final match on No 1 Court, Ben Shelton looked good against lucky loser Marton Fucsovics. Shelton, making a habit of winning in straight sets at SW19 this year, won 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2. The match felt like it was on American's racket from ball one – even in the second-set tiebreak, a devilish slice backhand set the American on his way to stamping further authority on the match. The 10th seed will face Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round. It will be the third Grand Slam in a row the two have faced each other. Listen out for a post-match press snippet from Shelton. We also talk you through a funny/awkward exchange between the American and a US-based journalist. Day 2 at Wimbledon was hot, it was humid, and there was havoc as more seeds fell at the first hurdle. In Part 1 we discuss the shock exit of Coco Gauff at the hands of Dayana Yastremska and what it says about the difficulty of backing up a French Open win when Wimbledon is right around the corner. We also lost recent title winner Jessica Pegula and then Zheng Qinwen. Some big names did go through, most notably Iga Swiatek and defending champion Barbora Krejcikova. Finally, we cover Petra Kvitova's last match on the grass courts of SW19. In Part 2 (36m44s) we talk though the matches held over from last night, in which there were very different fates for a fang-tastic Fritz who fought back to beat Giovanni MPetshi Perricard, and a chastened Zverev who went down to Arthur Rinderknech. We discuss some difficult moments in his press conference and what he needs to change to find his form. There were emotional wins today for veterans Dan Evans and Gael Monfils, and whilst Musetti struggled with his post-injury form, big names Sinner, Draper and Djokovic all went through with relative ease. In Part 3 (72m08s) we look ahead to tomorrow's order of play and its tantalising line-up of second round matches, many of which are now not quite what we expected.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! Selma Taha, the executive director for advocacy group Southall Black Sisters, and Danae Thomas, two of the women, join Anita Rani to talk about what impact the charges being dropped has had, and how they're hoping this might impact further action against racist violence against women and girls. Saturday's Wimbledon champion will be a first time winner in SW19. Czech player Barbora Krejcikova will face Italy's Jasmine Paolini after they each won their semi-final – one of the semi-finals was the longest on record! Anita is joined by BBC Sport's Karthi Gnanasegaram from the commentary box at Wimbledon. The Australian vocalist, pianist and trumpeter Audrey Powne was drawn to jazz from a young age. Her style ranges from hook-laden synth pop songs to long form cinematic soundscapes, RnB ballads and free jazz improvisations. She has recently released her debut album, From The Fire, and she joins Anita to talk about her work, the inspiration behind the album and to perform live in the studio.Radio 4 and Woman's Hour are remembering Dr Michael Mosley's life and work.
