In this episode of the Lean to the Left Podcast, host Bob Gatty interviews Gerald Epstein, author of 'Busting the Bankers Club,' and a professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.Epstein discusses how powerful interests within the 'Bankers Club,' including big banks like JP Morgan and Bank of America, federal institutions like the Federal Reserve, financial regulators, and others, have maintained a financial system that benefits the wealthy at the expense of the majority. He explores the dualities of the financial system, its manipulation by powerful interests, the adverse impact of current banking practices on the average person, and the potential for reform.Epstein argues for the break-up of the Bankers Club to create a more equitable and functional financial system that serves broader societal needs, including those of marginalized communities and the push for a greener economy. He also addresses the challenges of making such transformations and highlights the efforts of activists, public officials, and reform-minded groups working towards these goals. The conversation delves into specifics such as the destructive influence of credit card interest rates, the legacy of economic policies that have exacerbated racial inequalities, and the potential for public banks to fulfill social missions.Epstein emphasizes the importance of democratizing financial institutions, like the Federal Reserve, and the need for wide-ranging reforms to address issues of inequality and to harness finance as a force for good in society. He calls for passage of federal legislation to create public banks that serve marginalized communities, communities of color, small businesses, and funds "green" environmental initiatives.00:00 Introduction: The Cycle of Bank Bailouts01:48 Unveiling the Bankers Club: Allies and Operations04:56 The Dual Faces of Finance: Necessity and Destructiveness11:03 The Federal Reserve's Role and Influence20:25 Addressing Inequality and the Power of Public Banks24:17 Racial Inequality and Financial Systems27:16 The Fight for Financial Reform and Public Banks33:06 The Political Landscape and Economic Implications39:30 Concluding Thoughts and Where to Find the Book Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Heartland Labor Forum listeners know that U.S. labor law sucks. Are there places in the world where workers have real rights and employers can't violate the law with impunity? Bankers brought the global economic system to its knees in 2007 and nearly did the same in 2020. Both times, the US government bailed out the banks and left them in control. How can we end this cycle of trillion-dollar bailouts and make finance work for the rest of us? Busting the Bankers' Club confronts the powerful people and institutions that benefit from our broken financial system—and the struggle to create an alternative. Drawing from decades of research on the history, economics, and politics of banking, economist Gerald Epstein shows that any meaningful reform will require breaking up this club of politicians, economists, lawyers, and CEOs who sustain the status quo. Thankfully, there are thousands of activists, experts, and public officials who are working to do just that. Clear-eyed and hopeful, Busting the Bankers' Club: Finance for the Rest of Us (U California Press, 2024) centers the individuals and groups fighting for a financial system that will better serve the needs of the marginalized and support important transitions to a greener, fairer economy. Busting the Bankers' Club is an eye-opening account of the failures of our financial system, the sources of its staying power, and the path to meaningful economic reform from Professor Gerald Epstein, Founding Codirector of the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Show host Gene Tunny interviews UMass Amherst Professor Gerald Epstein about his new book "Busting the Bankers' Club", which is about the powerful influence of banks in politics and regulation. Epstein argues the bankers' club maintains control through political allies and regulators. The conversation also covers financial deregulation, insufficient Dodd-Frank reforms, Quantitative Easing impacts, and alternatives like public banking and non-profit financial institutions. Please contact us with any questions, comments and suggestions by emailing us at contact@economicsexplored.com or sending a voice message via https://www.speakpipe.com/economicsexplored. About this episode's guest Prof. Gerald EpsteinGerald Epstein received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University, is a professor of economics, and is a founding co-director of the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has published widely on various economic policy issues, especially in central banking and international finance. His most recent book, Busting the Bankers' Club: Finance for the Rest of Us, was forthcoming in January 2024 from the University of California Press. What's covered in EP226Banking industry's influence in politics and regulation. (0:04)Financial deregulation and its impact on the economy. (8:58)Financial system's impact on democracy and fairness. (13:24)Financial system issues and regulation. (16:24)Economic policy after the financial crisis, including impacts of Quantitative Easing. (22:50)Financial regulation and publicly owned institutions. (28:08)Public banking, crypto, and risk-taking in finance. (33:30)TakeawaysProfessor Epstein argues in this episode:The "bankers' club" of allies including politicians, central banks, and economists helps sustain the power and influence of large banks.Financial deregulation in the US and weak Dodd Frank reforms failed to address issues like too-big-to-fail banks and accountability.Quantitative easing policies after the financial crisis disproportionately benefited wealthy asset holders over others. There is a need for more diverse public and non-profit financial institutions focused on social missions over profits.Crypto poses risks if it infects the core banking system or continues high-carbon polluting practices.Links relevant to the conversationGerald Epstein's book Busting the Bankers' Club: Finance for the Rest of Ushttps://www.amazon.com/Busting-Bankers-Club-Finance-Rest/dp/0520385640Working paper co-authored by Prof. Epstein “Did Quantitative Easing Increase Income Inequality?”https://www.ineteconomics.org/research/research-papers/did-quantitative-easing-increase-income-inequalityThanks to Obsidian Productions for mixing the episode and to the show's sponsor, Gene's consultancy business www.adepteconomics.com.au. Since the last-but-one financial crisis abated and governments responded to better times by clawing back their stimulus packages, a once-obscure economic philosophy has been gaining a growing following on the left. But, following the extraordinary policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic, even some conservative commentators and policy makers are showing an interest in Modern Monetary Theory or MMT. Not so fast, warns Gerald Epstein in his What's Wrong with Modern Money Theory? A Policy Critique (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). While this progressive economist welcomes any resistance to austerian economics and the policy rethink that the new theory is triggering, he warns against MMT's seductive appeal and its significant practical shortcomings. Her approach of integrating science with metaphysics and her own personal experiences has changed the lives of regular people as they reimagine how they see themselves, their businesses and how the world sees them. Lisa earned a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from Duke. She is a Transcendental Meditation Sidha, attended the Monroe Institute for the exploration of expanded states of consciousness, and studied imagery and dream reading at the American Institute for Mental Imagery for 15 years with noted author and teacher of Western spirituality Dr. Gerald Epstein. Today, Lisa's passion is helping others with little or no scientific or spiritual training master their innate abilities with practices designed to improve their lives, their relationships, and the world. She also uses her teaching and skills to guide the nonprofit she founded, Police2Peace which reimagines how the police see themselves and how the community sees them using the term “peace officer.” Police2Peace unites communities and police departments around programs that uplift and heal them. Lisa has been featured in broadcast media, numerous podcasts and online events, regularly appearing on ABC Network News in New York as a business correspondent.
Time is something that none of us can escape, yet few of us completely understand. In her new book - All The Time In The World - Lisa Broderick breaks down the science behind the human construct of time, and teaches how to change your perception of time to increase productivity, satisfaction and joy. This state of “focused perception” is the key to manipulating our construct of time. Lisa Broderick earned a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from Duke. She is a Transcendental Meditation (TM) Sidha, attended the Monroe Institute for the exploration of expanded states of consciousness, and studied imagery and dream reading at the American Institute for Mental Imagery with noted author and teacher of Western spirituality Dr. Gerald Epstein for fifteen years.

She is a Transcendental Meditation Siddha, attended the Monroe Institute for the exploration of expanded states of consciousness, and studied imagery and dream reading at the American Institute for Mental Imagery for 15 years with noted author and teacher of Western spirituality Dr. Gerald Epstein. In her new book, ALL the TIME in THE WORLD: Learn to Control Your Experience of Time to Live a Life Without Limitations, Lisa explains the physics, metaphysics and psychology of time, referencing real-world cases and scientific studies. The construct of time is one part physical and one part perception, and she breaks down the science behind both. By controlling our perceptions, we have the power to control time. “Focused perception” is the key to manipulating our construct of time, and in the second part of the book, Lisa shows how to build on this practice to achieve control of your own clock.

She currently runs a business consultancy based in New York City that helps socially conscious entrepreneurs manifest their creativity and energy. We've all experienced it, those weird episodes where time doesn't pass as normal, usually greatly slowed down because of something we're doing or experiencing, like athletes on the field in the zone. Up until now, from the perspective of science, most people would say that if it's in your head, it's not real. But what if you could learn to bring on episodes of controlling time, when and how you wanted them? What if you could learn to control time, so you had all the time in the world? This book explains the science of how that may be possible, with practical exercises to show you how. When we stop pretending that time is a real thing, we can access the past and the future at any moment. This state is characterized by certain brainwaves and has been called the zone, flow, and the Now. It is what I call focused perception. In this state, you can time travel anywhere you want: you may find yourself affecting the past, influencing the future, and choosing how you experience the present. In some sense, all personal transformation work is rooted in time. When we master time, we master ourselves. What is the observer effect? What is the quantum eraser? Lisa guides us in an exercise on how to change time (see it typed out below) Slowing time down Bending time for yourself There is another way to experience time Quantum theory or new science of time Pull; the thread on our limited idea of time….everything else unravels Stop pretending that time is a real thing The state of focused perception Master Time- Master Ourselves Practices- fuel your mind, stimulate your brain, insight, and innovation Time travel through your perceptions CHANGING TIME EXERCISE FOR YOU TO RECORD IN YOUR OWN VOICE: Close your eyes. Inhale through your nose regularly and exhale through the mouth twice as long. Again, inhale through the nose and exhale long, slow, twice as long. Maybe even seeing the air come out of your mouth as white smoke. Inhale again through the nose, and exhale slowly through the mouth, this time seeing the smoke turn into the number 3 in your mind's eye. And with the inhale and exhale see the number 3 dissolve into the number 2. And with the next exhalation, we are seeing the number two dissolve into the number 1 and then again seeing the number 1 turn into a zero. Let's choose something we would really like to create for ourselves. Something that is meaningful and that you want to experience in your life. It could be a new job, a house, a retreat center, a new love, a special group that you feel a sense of belonging in. See it in your mind's eye. Think of it as an experience or a movie that you are living it. Think of how this will benefit everyone. It's a detriment to no-one Think about all the ways this benefits everyone. Now keeping this thought in your mind and living it, the visceral sense of seeing, feeling touching it. Now become aware that it has already happened. Live it. It's accomplished. You're living the fact that the phone rang, the check came, the escrow closed, the people showed up Fully and completely, there's nothing more to do. Feel the satisfaction, the joy…. all of the sensations of this thing you want… it's already happened. Now, don't ponder the details. just live the experience that it's done. It's happened. You can relax, knowing that it is already complete. It doesn't matter how it happened. Live through this for a moment….(pause) Now we are going to invoke our bodies. It's so important because we hold things in our bodies. Imagine amplifying this feeling of certainty out the bottom of your feet, into the earth. It's coming out the bottom, filling the entire earth. Filling it with the certainty that everything you want..., this experience is done. There's nothing more to do. Now moving outwards… up the top of your head, outwards from your body in every direction, out and up and up and moving into the galaxy, and moving into the universe as large as you can go, higher and higher and higher and now…. Just let the feeling go…. RELAX. Feel your body rest in the calmness of nothing more to do (long pause and fade out) END LInks: Book: https://allthetimebook.com/ @LisaBroderick on Facebook / @LisaBroderick on Instagram/Twitter Lisa's Website: HTTP://lisabroderick.com CONNECT WITH ELAINA Join our 30-Day Detox program in January 2022 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PureJoyAcademy/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/purejoyacademy/ Website: http://purejoyplanet.com/ YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/user/PureJoyPlanet Online Superfood & Health Store -https://store.purejoyplanet.com/ Join our Keto Gone Green Program - https://www.purejoyplanet.com/keto-gone-green If you like this episode and want to hear more, please head to iTunes, subscribe, rate, and review this podcast. Banking and finance are essential to a modern economy, but they don't have to be privately owned to do it. The Federal Reserve must be transformed to create a system of publicly-owned banks. Gerald Epstein joins Paul Jay on theAnalysis.news podcast.
The Federal Reserve has been subsidizing the megabanks, but what's needed is an institution that provides the backstop, the loan guarantees, the subsidies, the lines of credit, et cetera, to support the development of a whole variety of public financial institutions.
