Are you maximizing the value of your shareholder voting rights? It's a question many investors overlook, but it could be the key to unlocking additional income from your investments.Preston Yadegar is the founder and CEO of Shareholder Vote Exchange, the world's first marketplace for shareholder voting rights. Preston has previously worked at several investment advisors and hedge funds in trading and software engineering roles. He graduated from Boston University with a bachelor's degree in computer science and philosophy in 2020. We discuss proxy votes—what they are, how they work, and why they're often neglected by retail investors. Preston explains that while most shareholders have the right to vote, the majority don't exercise it, leading to what he terms 'rational shareholder apathy.' But should investors simply disregard these votes? Preston argues that there's value in these rights, and that selling them could benefit both the shareholder and the company.Blog post available at: https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/preston-yadegar-shareholder-vote-exchangeDeep KnowIedge Investing empowers you to earn higher returns in the equity portion of your portfolio. Join us as we dive into a candid conversation with Kyle Hedman, the voice behind the rebranded Band of Traders podcast, formerly known as Two Bulls in a China Shop. In this unscripted episode, we peel back the curtain on the emotional rollercoaster of trading, the importance of risk management, and the psychological battles that traders face.As the calendar flips to 2024, Kyle shares his journey from exploring stocks to delving into the world of futures. He discusses the value of paper trading, the impact of trading psychology, and the evolution of his own trading process. We also touch on the challenges of maintaining realistic expectations in the trading universe, where the lure of quick riches often overshadows the gritty reality of the markets. But it's not all charts and trades – our conversation meanders through the streets of Peoria, the festive traditions down under, and even the potential of nuclear power with a nod to Miss America, Grace Stanke. We reflect on the state of the world, the sense of community in trading circles, and the importance of honesty in an industry rife with overpromises.Blog post available at: https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/kyle-hedman-band-of-tradersDeep KnowIedge Investing empowers you to earn higher returns in the equity portion of your portfolio. I hope you're enjoying your holiday break. The next couple of weeks will be repeats while I recharge for the investing year in 2024. This episode from last year is a great overview on dividend investing. I hope 2024 shines brightly on your portfolio.Mark LaMonica CFA, is an investor, financial educator and the Director of Product Management, Individual Investor at Morningstar. He still recalls the excitement of receiving his first dividend from Nike as a teen. Mark became interested in income investing during the chaotic dot-com crash emphasizing the importance of looking at a company as a real business, rather than a ticker code. Mark believes in the importance of financial independence and how dividends can be used to generate income without touching principal. We also explore the importance of balancing dividend growth and current yield in an income investing strategy.Blog post available at: https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/lamonica-aug2023There's a million ways to invest in stocks. In this episode I'm joined by special guest, Laks Ganapathi, founder and CEO of Unicus Research. In this candid conversation, we delve into the often-misunderstood world of short selling and its impact on the stock market. We also look at some recent investing themes like ESG and craft beer to see where hype and optimism has led to poor investment returns.Laks sheds light on the misconceptions surrounding short sellers. She acknowledges that some short sellers may contribute to a negative image by pumping stocks for profit, but she emphasizes that this isn't representative of all short sellers. The conversation touches on the ethical concerns of short selling and the need for transparency in financial markets. The discussion turned to this article ESG – A Good Deed With An Incentive To Scam | IFC Re... Have you ever considered the difference between small cap and large cap stocks? Small cap stocks are catching the attention of investors for a very good reason. Steven Cress, the head of quantitative strategies at Seeking Alpha, joined me on the podcast to shed some light on the smaller end of the market."One of the reasons why I find some of the small caps interesting is actually they have traded off so significantly compared to the large cap counterpart." Seeking Alpha are generously offering a 50% discount to listeners of this podcast, making it $189 for the first year instead of the regular $239 price. Try the premium plan for free for seven days. THIS IS A REPEAT EPISODE FROM FEBRUARY - ENJOYING A SHORT BREAK AND BACK WITH A BRAND NEW EPISODE NEXT WEEK.What do exercise, the great outdoors and a healthy lifestyle have to with successful investing? Does the military prepare you for more than just battle? Joining me in this episode is Erik Smolinski from esInvests. Erik is a Marine veteran and self-made millionaire investor. He's spent over 30,000+ hours honing his craft and outpacing the market for the last 14 years (22.8% CAGR). Erik maintains that there are many well-documented biases in traders and investors. They are covered in the following white paper. One of the things it talks about is how we like to cut winning trades short and we let losing trades run. It's because of ego. We like winning trades, we like being correct. That's why as soon as we have something that's in profit, we want to take it. When too much Shawn is never enough. Here's part 2 of our chat. The highlight for me in this episode is the trap of vanity investing. It's when people talk about their investments as a way of showing how sophisticated they are. It's about bragging rights and commanding authority over the mere mortals who only want to invest in the boring old S&P500. Shawn likens it to the bores who only want to talk about their own importance in the workplace. Casey Stubbs is best known for helping people to earn income from actively trading the market. But he's also a believer in putting wealth into longer term investments that will grow steadily over the long-term. According to Casey, long-term investing is a game-changer because it allows investments to grow and compound over time. He emphasizes that anyone, regardless of their initial capital, can begin investing. The key is consistency. By adhering to an investment strategy and continuously learning, individuals can steadily increase their wealth. Long-term investing isn't a quick path to riches; rather, it's a reliable approach to achieving financial stability and security.Blog post available at: https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/casey-stubbs-trading-strategyStocks for Beginners is a production of Finpods Pty Ltd. In this episode Phil and Karl Kaufman discuss the importance of free cash flow as a key metric for investors. Karl explains that free cash flow is the amount of cash left over after a company pays its expenses and capital expenditures. Unlike earnings, which can be manipulated, free cash flow provides a more accurate representation of a company's financial health. They emphasize that investing in stocks is not gambling, as investors are buying a piece of a real business with a long-term goal of getting a good return on their investment. They highlight companies like Apple and Broadcom, which have impressive free cash flow growth, and discuss the significance of free cash flow margin as a metric to understand how efficiently a company generates cash. Karl also shares insights on stock buybacks, dividends, and the emotional aspect of investing.More Karl at this link: American Dream Investing: Expert Stock Picks, Texted To Youhttps://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/adiaug2023Phil's Linktree: https://linktr.ee/phil_muscatelloSharesight automatically track price, performance and dividends from 240,000+ global stocks, crypto, ETFs and funds. What does an epic poem written around 700BC tell us about investing? How are investors tempted to steer their money onto the rocks of investing underperformance? My guest is Michael Kemp, author of The Ulysses Contract. There's plenty of great lessons in this interview & much more in the book. There's a lot to avoid but as Michael says:"Don't be discouraged by all the negative arguments I'm putting forth. I don't believe you need to become a champion to become a really good investor. Market returns are fantastic returns as long as you achieve them. Don't try and shoot for the stars cuz you're probably full flat on your face. But if you accept that you're gonna be delivered market returns and you are patient, then market returns can be spectacular returns given the power of compounding."Blog post available at: https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/ulyssesPhil's Linktree: https://linktr.ee/phil_muscatelloThere's a million ways to invest in stocks. Silicon Valley Bankcorp failed spectacularly in March 2023. The bank, the regulators and the media formed a circle of finger-pointing and blame: In this interview Gary explains "duration risk". Duration risk refers to the sensitivity of a bond's price to changes in interest rates. In simple terms, duration risk is the risk that the value of a bond will decrease as interest rates rise. For a bank, this risk is significant, as bonds make up a significant portion of their portfolio. If a bank doesn't manage duration risk correctly, it can result in significant losses, as was the case with Silicon Valley Bankcorp. Gary notes that understanding duration risk is a fundamental concept in finance, and anyone in a finance-related role should know this. The Federal Reserve even contacted Silicon Valley Bankcorp last year, expressing their concern about the bank's bond portfolio. However, the bank ignored the warning, and the result was catastrophic. Here's a link to the blog post: https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/dki042023Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. If you don't know who the sucker is at the poker table it's you. I was joined in this conversation by Wall Street Journal reporter Spencer Jakab. His latest book is “The Revolution That Wasn't: GameStop, Reddit and the Fleecing of Small Investors.” The frenzy in meme stocks in 2021 was perceived as a Robin Hood style raid on Wall Street. Reddit forums filled with young men holding "diamond hands" taking down the financial industry. The truth was far more nuanced. We also took a detour to look at insider trading by members of Congress.Spencer Jakab writes for and edits the Heard on the Street Column at The Wall Street Journal. He was Deputy Editor between 2015 and 2019 and wrote the Journal's daily investing column, Ahead of the Tape, for four years before that. Spencer spent four years at Britain's Financial Times writing the “Lex” and “On Wall Street” columns and got his start in financial journalism at Dow Jones Newswires where he was part of a SABEW-winning team covering energy markets. Spencer is the author of two books on the plight of individual investors, both published by the Portfolio imprint of Penguin Random House. “Heads I Win, Tails I Win: Why Smart Investors Fail and How To Tilt the Odds in Your Favor” (2016) and “The Revolution That Wasn't: GameStop, Reddit and the Fleecing of Small Investors.” His first career was in finance where he spent years as a top-rated emerging market stock analyst. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and three sons.Find out more at the blog post: https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/jakabHere's a link to the book: The Revolution That Wasn't: Gamestop, Reddit, and the Fleecing of Small Investors by Spencer Jakab (goodreads.com)Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time.
