Morningstar has a $250 price target on Tesla (TSLA), almost $100 below where the stock currently sits. Seth Goldstein says his firm sees robotaxi as a significant profit driver for the company but doesn't see it for years down the line. He adds that deliveries are expected to remain weak for the mid-term. Seth notes that Morningstar values all of Tesla's businesses together and explains that valuation serves as a key component behind bearishness. ======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Options involve risks and are not suitable for all investors. Lower year-over-year profits is something Morningstar's Seth Goldstein expects to see in Tesla's (TSLA) earnings after Tuesday's closing bell. Tariffs can lead to higher unit production costs and pinch margins. As for reported delays in Tesla's more affordable Model Y, Seth believes it's critical the company offer clarity on a production timeline to regain consumer confidence. ======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Tesla (TSLA) shares seesawed after the U.S. announced new tariffs on autos. But while the news might seem like a negative for the EV maker, Morningstar's Seth Goldstein thinks otherwise. He believes Tesla's domestic production could give it an edge over competitors like Ford (F) and General Motors (GM), who may struggle to pass on higher costs to consumers. Goldstein also weighs in on Tesla's growth prospects, including the impact of a potential new, more affordable model, and why he thinks the stock's current price might be due for a reality check.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
Tesla is in a tailspin. Sales are dropping and the stock has been cut in half since December, blamed on Elon Musk's involvement with DOGE in the U.S. There have been incidents of vandalism against Tesla dealerships and on top of that, the automaker is facing ramped up competition from a Chinese company that's dramatically decreased charging time. Host Mike Eppel talks to Seth Goldstein, Equity Strategist at Morningstar Research Services, who covers Tesla and many other brands in the auto sector. Seth Goldstein; Recorded February 13, 2025 - Black people and people of African heritage have lived in Maine for more than 400 years, playing a vital role in the shaping of the economy and the history of the state. In the 1800s, many of these individuals worked as farmers, homemakers, drivers, hotel owners, and restaurant keepers, and even more worked in the maritime trades as shipbuilders, fishermen, lobstermen, and sailors. In this talk, Cushing's Point Museum director Seth Goldstein discussed the fundamental role of African heritage sailors in regional history and examined why the jobs of mariners and shore-related occupations such as longshoremen were important for individuals of African heritage. Seth also addressed how Black mariners participated in the Underground Railroad. Recorded February 13, 2025

Tesla (TSLA) slipped 20% from its all-time high in December, and Morningstar's Seth Goldstein believes the company is now "nearly priced for perfection." What's getting in the way is the uncertain future around Tesla's robotaxi rollout. Seth says the biggest roadblock will be how states react to federal regulations around autonomous safety. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Tesla (TSLA) is down after a Delaware judge rejected Elon Musk's pay package for a second time. That's just one reason why Morningstar's Seth Goldstein is more wary than others on Tesla. He explains why the company will face headwinds with vehicle deliveries and EV competition, even under a Trump administration. He believes Tesla needs to hit the gas on its full self driving outlook to stay ahead in the autonomous race. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. (2) The second article today reviews a company that is an old favorite of ethical and sustainable investors. The article is titled Buy First Solar Stock on the Dip. Solar Energy Will Be Too Good an Opportunity for President-Elect Trump to Pass Up. It's by James Brumley and found on fool.com. Here are a few of his comments on First Solar stock. “First Solar (FSLR) Investors suspect pro-oil President-elect Donald Trump could also prove unsupportive of renewable energy. In fact, most clean energy stocks are down since his Nov. 5 election on this very worry. First Solar has been no exception to the industrywide sell-off. This weakness, however, is also a buying opportunity for anyone interested in owning a piece of the solar panel maker, or in adding exposure to the solar industry as a whole. The solar power movement is too big and too well-developed for Donald Trump to bring to a halt now. First Solar is also well-positioned to sidestep one of the few meaningful actions the president-elect could take to disrupt the solar industry's growth. Solar is just too competitive to stop now Data gathered by Wood Mackenzie and reported by the U.S. Department of Energy indicates that utility-scale solar power is now in line with the cost of natural gas and coal-fired power… The irony? Largely because it's the cheapest means of adding utility-scale power production there, solar is growing like wildfire in several states like Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas that picked Trump to be president during the recently ended election cycle. To the extent voters picked Trump for economic reasons, they'll certainly appreciate cheaper electricity and its positive impact on the economy. The 2022 passage of the Inflation Reduction Act is admittedly fueling much of this growth, by offering taxpayers a tax credit of up to 30% of the cost of a solar power system. The IRA also incentivizes utility-scale solar power projects as well as the manufacturing of solar panels themselves… But tariffs? While unspecific as well as far from being certain (Trump argues the mere threat of tariffs is enough), First Solar is mostly immune to their impact anyway. Although the company requires some imported materials that may be subject to such tariffs, it's an American manufacturer mostly serving the North American market, where the company believes over 90% of its immediate revenue opportunities await… Data source: StockAnalysis.com. Chart by author. Give at least partial credit for this brewing growth to First Solar's Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) photovoltaic panels. Although they make its design and production processes more complicated and more costly than that of more conventional silicon panels, this technology proves more durable while at the same time delivering more power. Utility-scale buyers are increasingly seeing these high-performance panels as an investment rather than an expense, as they further lower the effective per-kilowatt cost of solar power… The market's overestimating the risk, and underestimating First Solar Now all of a sudden First Solar's stumble since early November and its much bigger 37% pullback from June's peak looks like an entry opportunity. The analyst community agrees, anyway. Undeterred by political rhetoric and handwringing, most of them still consider First Solar stock a strong buy, sporting a consensus price target of $280.79. That's almost 50% above the stock's present price.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Consider These Top ESG Stocks! (3) This next article, though from Australia, might interest many investors outside of that wonderful country. It's titled The Ethical Investor: These three ESG award-winning ASX companies show how it's done. It's by Eddy Sunarto found on ntnews.com.au. Here are some of what Mr. Sunarto says about his picks. “1. Orica (ASX:ORI) was named Australia's most sustainable company in the 2024 Australian Financial Review Sustainability Leaders awards, taking home top honours for its significant environmental impact. The company, a global leader in commercial explosives, was recognised for its groundbreaking emissions abatement project at its Kooragang Island plant near Newcastle, NSW. This project is the largest of its kind in the Australian chemicals sector, reducing emissions by 45% at the site and cutting national chemical industry emissions by 11%... The judges believe Orica's efforts have not only addressed environmental challenges but have also driven economic growth, injecting millions into the local economy while future-proofing critical manufacturing capabilities for industries such as mining, agriculture and healthcare. The company's commitment to sustainability is also reflected in its ambitious climate targets, aiming for net zero emissions by 2050. 2. Sims Metal Management (ASX:SGM) an Australian-based global recycling company with a 106-year history, was named the most sustainable corporation of 2024 by Corporate Knights, topping its Global 100 list. Known for its role in the circular economy, Sims has been integral in reducing carbon emissions by recycling metals like steel, copper, and aluminium – which are crucial in industries like electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar panels. In 2023 alone, the company's efforts saved 13 million tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to removing nearly three million cars from the road, according to its reports. Sims' approach to sustainability extends beyond recycling, with ambitious goals to transition to renewable energy in its operations by 2025 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050… The company is investing in advanced technologies, like automated sorting systems and AI robots, to improve the efficiency of its recycling processes. Although these innovations may not always attract the same attention as large renewable energy projects, CEO Stephen Mikkelsen said that metal recycling plays a vital role in decarbonising industries and contributing to a sustainable future. 3. Australian Vintage (ASX:AVG) won the 2024 Global Drinks Intel ESG Award for Sustainable Wine Producer, which was announced in September. The award recognised the company's strong commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, despite current challenges within the Australian wine industry. The company had earlier achieved B Corp certification in February, making it one of only three Australian wine companies with this status. Australian Vintage's ESG strategy focuses on three key pillars: 'Thriving People', 'Nurture Nature', and 'Meaningful Growth'. The company said all these are supported by measurable, verifiable performance… The judges praised Australian Vintage for not just making ESG commitments, but for quantifying and achieving real, impactful results.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Additional Articles of Interest 1. Ralph welcomes Professor Stephanie Luce of the City University of New York, who has co-authored “Practical Radicals: Seven Strategies to Change the World,” and together they outline the challenges and the strategies that face underdogs trying to change the system. Plus, our resident constitutional scholar, Bruce Fein, joins us to discuss the death of Russian dissident, Alexei Navalny.Stephanie Luce is Professor of Labor Studies at the School of Labor and Urban Studies, and Professor of Sociology at the Graduate Center at City University of New York. Professor Luce is best known for her research on living wage campaigns and movements. She is the author of Fighting for a Living Wage and co-author of The Living Wage: Building a Fair Economy, and The Measure of Fairness. Her latest book, co-authored with Deepak Bhargava, is Practical Radicals: Seven Strategies to Change the World. We find it's actually hard to get people to imagine really liberatory worlds because we're so dominated by corporate culture and consumer culture and undemocratic functioning that it is hard to imagine a world that's different. So even just getting people to dream of a different possibility is a good start, and then we have to think about what kind of power it's going to take to make those changes.Stephanie LuceA lot of people critique [collective care as a strategy]. They think it's just about taking care of one another as part of life—that's what we do. We're arguing it can also be strategic because when done well, it enables people to engage in a fight in the long term. You can't go on strike if you don't have someone to watch your children, or if you don't have a strike fund. You can't risk arrest if you don't know if you have bail. So collective care is a way of taking care of one another, doing the things that enable us to take risks and to know people have our back. And that helps us up our militancy and strategy because we can take bigger risks and build the capacity for other kinds of struggle.Stephanie LuceThere's such a thing as the civic personality that is a huge Achilles' heel of the drive to train people civically. You can train people civically… but if they don't have a civic personality, if they don't have fire in their bellies, so to speak, emotional intelligence, if they don't have a framework of a public philosophy, if they don't have a capacity for resilience to learn from their last mistakes, if they haven't controlled their ego so they can give credit to other people in their circle and set an example and motivate, if they're not willing to read and stay up to date with what's going on in their fields and in the area of their opponents, it doesn't matter how many skills they learn from our efforts.Ralph NaderBruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law. Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall.[Alexei Navalny] was free. He knew he could have left [Russia]. He probably could have won a Nobel Peace Prize. He returned anyway. And the pride which I can express in such a human being is beyond words.Bruce FeinIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 2/20/241. A diplomatic row is brewing between Israel and Brazil. On Sunday, leftist Brazilian President Lula compared Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza to Hitler's genocide of the Jews during an address to the African Union. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz declared that until he retracts his comments, Lula is “persona non grata in Israel.” Yet Lula does not intend to retract these comments, and has instead recalled the Brazilian ambassador to Israel. The Israeli campaign against Gaza has forced nearly all of its over 2 million inhabitants from their homes. This from Reuters.2. On Monday, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights issued a report alleging “credible allegations of egregious human rights violations to which Palestinian women and girls continue to be subjected in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.” According to this report, “Palestinian women and girls in detention have…been subjected to multiple forms of sexual assault, such as being stripped naked and searched by male Israeli army officers. At least two female Palestinian detainees were reportedly raped while others were reportedly threatened with rape and sexual violence…photos of female detainees in degrading circumstances were also reportedly taken by the Israeli army and uploaded online.” Experts say “Taken together, these alleged acts may constitute grave violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, and amount to serious crimes under international criminal law that could be prosecuted under the Rome Statute.”3. The anti-Biden “uncommitted” protest vote campaign in Michigan continues to pick up steam. On Valentine's Day, the New York Times reported that Our Revolution – the Bernie Sanders legacy political operation – has endorsed the campaign. Our Revolution joins other prominent new boosters, such as Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and former Representative Andy Levin. In her video endorsing the campaign, Tlaib says “It is important…not only to march against the genocide, not only make sure we're calling our members of Congress … it is also important to create a voting bloc, something that is a bullhorn to say enough is enough.”4. On February 15th, the African Methodist Episcopal, or AME Church Council of Bishops issued a statement calling for the “Immediate Withdrawal of Financial Support from Israel.” This major step from a prominent Black faith group is an indication that the genocidal Israeli campaign in Gaza is alienating significant factions of the Democratic Party coalition. The statement reads “Since 1954, Israel has shown a willful disregard for the human dignity of Palestinians. Since October 7, 2023, in retaliation for the brutal murder of 1139 Israeli citizens by Hamas, Israel has murdered over 28,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. The United States is supporting this mass genocide. Thismust not be allowed to continue. There must be an immediate and permanent ceasefire between these two communities. We call for a solution to be negotiated by genuine representatives of the people of Israel and Palestine and condemn all violence as a means of resolving this conflict. Surely there is a grassroots solution that affirms the dignity and humanity of all God's people in Palestine and Israel. The tools of empire, colonialism, and domination will not solve the problems they created. The cycle of violence between historically wounded peoples will not be dissolved by the creation of more wounds or through weapons of war. We remain in solidarity with Jesus Christ of Nazareth, a Palestinian Jew, and the Prince of Peace. We weep for the suffering being inflicted upon the children of God in the Holy Land and all the earth. We cry for freedom and implore those who say they love God to demonstrate a tangible love for their neighbors. We will travail in prayer and pursue justice until freedom reigns for all.”5. Semafor reports that Pro-Israel groups are engaging in targeted harassment of mainstream American journalists perceived as too critical of Israel. This story focuses on Washington Post foreign correspondent Lousia Loveluck, and documents how SKDK – a D.C. PR firm close to the Biden administration – has dug into Loveluck's background, including unrelated protests she attended before becoming a journalist. While the Washington Post defended Loveluck's reporting, they did not defend her personally – setting a dangerous precedent for intimidation of American journalists by Israel-aligned groups.6. The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that “An embryo created through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) is a child protected by Alabama's wrongful death act and the Alabama Constitution.” Specifically, the court ruled that the “parents of frozen embryos killed at an IVF clinic when an intruder tampered with an IVF freezer may proceed with a wrongful death lawsuit against the clinic for alleged negligence.” Yet in a broader sense, this means that IVF clinics will be legally liable for the death of embryos fertilized through IVF – likely spelling the end of IVF in the state. This from 1819 News.7. A stunning report from the Center for Climate Integrity, published in the Guardian, reveals that the plastics industry has deliberately misled the public for years, claiming that their products are continuously and sustainably recyclable – all the while knowing that “recycling cannot be considered a permanent solid waste solution [to plastics], as it merely prolongs the time until an item is disposed of”. Richard Wiles, president of the Center for Climate Integrity puts it simply: “The companies lied…It's time to hold them accountable for the damage they've caused.”8. REI, the company given constant adulation by the liberal press, is union busting. From the REI Union SoHo, “On Feb 15, REI announced it will be withholding annual merit pay increases from our store and all unionized [REI] stores across the Co-op.” Unionized workers walked off the job in protest of this blatant anti-union move.9. AP reports Amazon has joined SpaceX and Trader Joe's in arguing that the National Labor Relations Board is unconstitutional. We have discussed this corporate stratagem on this show before and noted that more corporations, particularly those facing unionization efforts, were likely to adopt this legal argument. Seth Goldstein, a lawyer representing the Amazon Labor Union and Trader Joe's United, said “Since [these companies] can't defeat successful union organizing, they now want to just destroy the whole process.”10. Finally, in some positive labor news, Michigan has become the first state in 60 years to overturn its so-called “right to work” law, the Nation reports. Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber is quoted saying “This moment has been decades in the making…By standing up and taking their power back, at the ballot box and in the workplace, workers have made it clear Michigan is and always will be the beating heart of the modern American labor movement.” Beyond overturning right to work, Michigan has also “restored prevailing-wage protections for construction workers, expanded collective bargaining rights for public school employees, and restored organizing rights for graduate student research assistants at the state's public colleges and universities.”This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. In our first segment, we speak with workers at Trader Joe's Essex Crossing in Lower Manhattan about the recent firing of a union worker and the ongoing struggle there to unionize the workforce. We are also be joined by Seth Goldstein, a union lawyer who represents the workers, about threats that labor law is facing: Amazon, SpaceX and Trader Joe's are alleging in a legal filing published Friday morning that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is unconstitutional. Then, we hear an interview by Indypendent Editor-in-Chief John Tarleton with Bennett Fischer of the United Federation of Teachers. At the United Federation of Teachers, one of the city's largest municipal unions, UFT Retiree Advocate, a group of retiree activists, announced on Friday that they will contest an internal union election this spring for leadership of the retiree chapter which has more than 60,000 members. And in our final segment, we speak with Tami Gold, Professor of Film and Media Studies at CUNY's Hunter College about an ongoing film series showing movies about Palestine. She'll also update us about an upcoming Jewish Voice for Peace protest for Palestine.
We speak with Don Mark Roxas and Diego Ramirez, workers at Trader Joe's Essex Crossing in Lower Manhattan, about the recent firing of a union worker and the ongoing struggle there to unionize the workforce. We are also joined by Seth Goldstein, a union lawyer who represents the workers, about threats that labor law is facing: Amazon, SpaceX and Trader Joe's are alleging in a legal filing published Friday morning that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is unconstitutional.
It's Hump Day! First, in a pre-taped conversation, Sam speaks with Seth Goldstein, legal counsel for Trader Joe's United & the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), to discuss a recent legal filing by Amazon, Trader Joe's, and SpaceX that alleges that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is unconstitutional. Then, Emma speaks with Dr. Tarek Loubani, associate professor at the University of Western Ontario and leader of the Glia Project, to discuss what is happening on the ground now that hospitals in Gaza are mostly non-operational. First, Emma runs through updates on the US vetoing a UN ceasefire resolution for the THIRD time, Gaza's dire situation, Ukrainian troops, US sanctions on Russia, Trump's legal woes, the FBI's Biden Informant and his foreign connections, SCOTUS attacks, student debt, Starbucks unions, and the murder of a nonbinary child in Oklahoma, before watching Nikki Haley put on her best Hillary Clinton pants(uit) and accuse Trump of Russia-connected authoritarianism. Then, Sam is joined by Sam Goldstein as they dive into the evolution of the legal attacks on the NLRB, beginning with Amazon's objections to the NLRB's role in the Amazon Labor Union elections of 2022, and seeing Elon Musk file suit against the NLRB's constitutionality in the wake of a decision against SpaceX. Next, Goldstein steps back, walking through the establishment of the National Labor Relations Act in 1935 as an attempt to institutionalize the conflict between labor and management in an attempt to somewhat protect workers' rights, and the near-nonexistent changes in its management (outside of the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act) over the following eight decades, despite the overwhelming changes to the labor market with the rise of Tech and the gig economy. After tackling the history of challenges to its unconstitutionality, Seth walks Sam through the three major planks of SpaceX's case – namely: the requirement of good cause for Presidents to remove NLRB judges, the Seventh Amendment right to a jury, and the Board's combination of legislative, judicial, and executive powers. Exploring each point, Goldstein tackles the absurdity of each point within the broader operations of the US government, and the devastating impact the case could have on both the NLRB and the administrative state writ large. After discussing SpaceX's attempt to keep this legal battle in Texas, Goldstein wraps up with Trader Joe's similar case coming out of Connecticut, the threat IT poses to the NLRB, and what to expect moving forward. Dr. Tarek Loubani then joins, first parsing through his experience doing humanitarian and medical work in Gaza over the last decade, and touching on his experiences during Gaza's Great March of Return in 2018, which saw thousands of Gazans shot during peaceful and civil demonstrations against their conditions, including Dr. Loubani himself. Next, Loubani assesses the complete devastation of Gaza's medical care during Israel's ongoing ethnic cleansing of the region, with Israel's active attacks on both medical institutions and medical personnel setting a new standard for depraved warfare, also exploring the harrowing and devastating realities of genocide and apartheid on the ground, from both a medical and broader perspective. Tarek also discusses his experiences at Al-Shifa Hospital, and unpacks the insane claim that Hamas could operate its military out of overpacked and overwhelmed medical centers, before wrapping up by addressing the active culpability and complicity of the West and the need to hold our politicians accountable. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by the great RM Brown as they tackle the NBA All-Star game, watch Norm Finkelstein dunk on Rabbi Shmuley, and touch on some highlights from Rabbi Shmuley's agitprop tape. They also watch Dr. Irfan Galaria reflect on his experiences in Gaza with Joy Reid, and bask in the heckling of genocide-endorsers Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, plus, your IMs! For episode 200, I decided to celebrate by having my good friend Melissa on the show to have more of a discussion than an interview. We talked for more than 20 minutes about how men balance family and entrepreneurship. So many times, people ask women how they do it, we flipped the script. Also at the time of recording, I had laryngitis so I sound like a frog trying to imitate Barry White. So bear with me and my voice.
