In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Luan discusses the fascinating connection between giant clams and the efficiency of solar panels. He highlights the vibrant colors of giant clams, which are not only visually stunning but also play a crucial role in coral reef ecosystems, particularly in the Southeast Pacific. The key focus is on the algae, specifically zooxanthellae, that live within the soft tissue of giant clams. These algae absorb sunlight and are essential for the clams' survival, as they facilitate photosynthesis and contribute to the clam's calcium shell formation. Remarkably, giant clams can absorb about 95% of the light that hits them, significantly outperforming current solar panel technology, which has an efficiency of around 67%. Luan emphasizes the potential for replicating the light-absorbing mechanisms of giant clams in solar panel design. By studying the arrangement of the algae within the clams, scientists could potentially enhance solar panel efficiency, making them more effective in harnessing solar energy. This innovation could be pivotal in addressing global energy needs and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The episode underscores the importance of protecting biodiversity, as the loss of species like giant clams could mean missing out on valuable insights and advancements in renewable energy technology. Luan encourages listeners to appreciate the interconnectedness of marine life and its potential benefits for humanity, particularly in the context of sustainable energy solutions. If there ever was an episode not to let your kids listen to; this would be it. Although the comparison of animals to human genitalia will make that child inside you smile keep your kids away as you educate yourself. In this Weird Animal Facts episode we learn that there is an amphibian that looks like a dong and is commonly called and known as "penis snake" (fun drinking game; take a shot every time you hear the word penis). Also learn that more needs to be learned about this man-aconda of the murky South American waters; but what we do know: no lungs, eyes or limbs...what even is a penis snake? And with every ding-dong you need a woo-ha; the clam! We love to eat them...well some people like to eat clams... With so many clams in the world you'll wish we had more as they not only make our waters cleaner but they also help to protect the wonderful coral reefs! Thank you clams (Especially the GIANT CLAM!). In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Dan Killam. Dan is a post- doctoral researcher in the Coral Reef Laboratory here at Biosphere 2. Dan's central research focus is the study of giant clams. His research involves growing giant clams to understand how they embed signatures in their shells that relate to the activity of symbiotic algae in the clams bodies. Prior to Biosphere 2, Dan was a Zuckerman Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Haifa in Israel, where he studied the effects of climate change on bittersweet clams found on the Israeli coast. Dan completed his PhD in Paleobiology at UC Santa Cruz where he studied the ecological and physiological history of bivalves.   In this episode, Dan takes us deep into world of Giant Clam research-- revealing a wide array of fascinating facts about these overshadowed bivalves found within Coral Reefs. Further, Dan tells us why the Biosphere 2 Ocean is a great place to study clams, he explains his past research studying Clams in the Red Sea, and he guides us through the life history and symbiosis of Giant Clams.   https://dantheclamman.blog/
