This year there will be a special, hour-long, session with the RSGB Board where the Directors will present the four strategic priorities that the Society will be focusing on until the 2024 AGM. After that, Convention attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions. This will be a positive and productive opportunity to discuss with the Board how the Society, and its members, can meet the challenges facing amateur radio today. The session will be hosted by Don Beattie, G3BJ, who is the former IARU Region 1 President as well as a former President of the Radio Society of Great Britain. The session will be recorded so if you are unable to attend the Convention but would like to hear a particular topic discussed, please email that topic with your name and callsign to comms@rsgb.org.uk before Monday the 9th of October. The discussion will include as many topics as possible but the RSGB cannot guarantee every topic will be covered. Directors will also only answer specific questions from those who attend the session at the Convention. To be part of this discussion and pose your question to the Board, book your package or day ticket to the RSGB Convention today – go to rsgb.org/convention and choose ‘Click here to book online'. Using all modes on 1.2GHz frequencies, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.   Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 28th of September 2023 Another week of disrupted solar and geomagnetic conditions saw the Kp index go up and MUFs come down. A period of minor G1 geomagnetic storming was observed on Tuesday the 26th thanks to an enhanced solar wind stream containing a long-duration southward-facing Bz component. If the solar wind's Bz magnetic field points south, it more easily couples with the Earth's magnetic field, allowing solar plasma to flood in. The net result was a Kp index of 5.67 and visible aurora seen from the UK once again. It is worth reminding people that, at this point in the solar cycle, conditions are being governed more by the Kp index than the solar flux index. A high Kp index generally results in lower MUFs and poor HF conditions. During the week, the solar flux index was around 175, declining to 156 on Thursday the 28th. The number of solar flares also decreased as the week progressed. Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will remain in the range 145 to 155, perhaps hitting 160 on the 7th. NOAA also predicts quiet geomagnetic conditions with a maximum Kp index of 2. As we said last week, at this point in the cycle solar flares and coronal mass ejections are very prevalent and hard to predict. So, do not be surprised if the Kp index goes up again. Otherwise, if it remains low, make the most of the good HF conditions that generally follow. Finally, as it is now October, we can expect another step up in HF conditions as we enter Autumn, so keep an eye on the 10m band, which should be opening up to the US and Canada in the afternoon. There are plenty of 10m beacons to listen for from 28.160 to 28.330MHz, as well as FM repeaters clustered around 29.600MHz.   And now the VHF and up propagation news Last week saw trans-equatorial openings on 50MHz with V51 Namibia reported all over the UK, as far north as Scotland around 1900UTC. On the tropo front, last week was fairly unsettled with a visit from Agnes, our first named storm of the season, which affected the north and west. The coming week is looking much more suitable for VHF radio with high pressure building over the country from Tuesday, bringing a good chance of Tropo as we go through the week. This may not be fully developed for the 144MHz UK Activity Contest on Tuesday the 3rd, but possibly starting to help lift conditions, in the south at least. The high pressure will become more widespread over the next week, but by the following weekend of the 7th and 8th of October, the 1.3GHz Trophy may have to deal with more disturbed conditions in western areas. However, conditions will still probably be good for eastern areas across the North Sea to southern Scandinavia. The meteor scatter prospects are improving as we move towards the October Draconids, which peak on the night of the 8th and 9th. Auroras have also featured recently so should remain in our checklist. Incidentally, although we are technically outside the main Sporadic-E season, Dourbes ionosonde data plotted on the Propquest website have shown occasional ‘blips' in the critical frequency of the Sporadic-E layer, for example to 7.5MHz around 1650UTC on Wednesday the 27th of September. This would certainly be enough for 10m and perhaps even 6m chance openings. ‘If in doubt call CQ' is the take-away message here. Moon declination goes positive on Friday the 29th of September and reaches its peak the following Thursday. This means increasing Moon elevation and lengthening Moon Windows until then. The downside being that path losses are increasing all week ahead of apogee on the 10th of October. 144MHz sky noise starts off low, increasing to 500 Kelvin next Thursday before dropping again for the weekend. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Once again, a skydiving career wasn't born from the first exit, but the first freefall.  Argentina's static line course wasn't one that grabbed Juan Mayer, it was one that scared the hell out of him. Even after 52 jumps in a "kind of" AFF course and after freefall had shown him more of what our world may have to offer, it wasn't until a trip to Deland that he really saw the full picture.  Having now traveled the world, working in and helping to create incredible projects that have included everything from a world record balloon jump, flying over the pyramids, carving wing suits over The Palm Island in Dubai and publishing his own book of amazing images, Juan Mayer still has an incredible passion for skydiving and its community, and is another proud card carrying member of the Lunatic Fringe.

The Budget is all over, and just like many of the previous Budgets, it's almost disappeared from the news cycle, although there's still some remnants that are being discussed, and the two big issue s are inflation and tax cuts – the Reserve Bank did raise interest rates during the week, and that's the seventh consecutive interest rate rise – and the Reserve Bank Governor Phillip Lowe said that the rates will keep rising, although we have to remember he also said interest rates wouldn't rise until 2024, and that was just a few months before the last election – and these interest rates rises are primarily being used to curb inflation – the Labor government is facing many economic problems that have to be addressed, and it doesn't really matter who caused these problems, they're in government now, and it's their job to repair the damage. Some economists have suggested that the state of the economy now is very similar to the Depression era economy, with a combination of high national debt and inflation – and the Scullin government at that time, couldn't resolve the issues they inherited and were thrown out of office in 1931. It's difficult to compare economies from different eras – the economy today is far more complex and sophisticated than what it was in 1931 – but there might be a few lessons for the Labor government – fix the economy, or face a very short period of time in office.17 min 46 – Robodebt rears its ugly head againRobodebt has also reared its ugly head again, and the Royal Commission into the previous government's Robodebt scheme is hearing evidence at the moment – and there's some pretty awful material that's being presented there. And we're hearing from public servants, lawyers, people affected by Robodebt, people who had family members who suicided after receiving Robodebt notices. We can see why the Coalition just wants to deal with the here and the now, and don't want to hear about the past – but past is coming back to bite them – the government did receive legal advice in 2014 that a Robodebt system was unlawful and unconstitutional – yet a year later, they implemented the scheme. They were also given legal advice during the operation Robodebt scheme that it was unlawful, yet they continued to run with it.The former Prime Minister Scott Morrison is likely to appear at the Royal Commission to explain his actions as well, but whatever the outcome from the Royal Commission is, and whoever goes down with it well, we just have to make sure that governments can never ever introduce this type of system again.20 min 50 – The Lurhmann mistrialAnd there's also a few legal cases in the national news – Bruce Lurhmann was accused of raping Brittany Higgins in 2019 at Parliament House – and the trial had to be aborted because of misconduct by one of the members of the jury, where the jury member brought in their own research into the jury room, we assume to influence other jury members – the jury hadn't been able to reach a verdict after deliberating for five days and after these research papers were found in the jury room, the judge dismissed the case and there'll be a retrial in February 2023.It's an unsatisfactory outcome, but as a result of this mis-trial, there have been calls for a different type of court system for dealing with serious crimes of sexual assault – only around 15% of rapes are reported to police, and ultimately only 3% of those result in convictions – and only 10% of all rape trials result in a guilty verdict, and that's a really low statistic considering prosecution usually decides to go to trial if they think there's a good chance of winning the case – So obviously the system is not functioning well at all, and for different reasons, the Bruce Lurhmann trial was a more public example of this – and that was an issue with the jury, not with the case itself – but these types of cases are heard every day all around the country, with similar results, and it's a system that needs to change.26 min 28 – A racist attack in the WestAnd there was a recent incident in Perth where a 15-year-old Indigenous boy, was beaten by a 21 year old white man while he was walking home from school – Cassius Turvey died a few days later, and the WA police tried to play down the racial aspect to the attacks by suggesting that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time – just a bit odd, because Indigenous people always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time – and they were also asking the public not to draw conclusions –And it's the same story all around Australia, whether it's Redfern, Darwin, Palm Island, Moree or Middle Swan in Perth, Police always try to downplay the racist influence in these attacks on Indigenous people – a 15 year old boy has just been killed, and they put so much effort into downplaying the racist element to it.The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese has called out this racist attack, so if the Prime Minister can say it, why can't the police – if a 15-year-old girl from MLC had been attacked in this way, this would be massive national news for the next couple of months, but an Indigenous kid in a working class suburb of Perth, it tends to get brushed away.31 min 04 – The division of News CorporationDespite everything that the Herald Sun, The Age, and the ABC have been able to throw at Daniel Andrews, Labor is still way ahead in the opinion polls – and Labor have been far from perfect, but they're not incompetent – Daniel Andrews has made mistakes, but Matthew Guy has been a poor leader and the Victoria Liberal Party is in a complete mess. Now having said all of that, we just have to remember what happened in 1999 – The Liberal Premier at the time, Jeff Kennett, he was widely expected to win – he was way ahead in the polls, although the polls did narrow dramatically in the final week or two before the election day – and Steve Bracks ended up winning the election, with the support of independents. In that election, the Liberal Party lost 15 seats – and the ABC's Anthony Green said afterwards that it was the only election that he's ever worked on where he thought there might be something wrong with his election computer – so, that was a surprise election loss for the government in 1999 – it could always happen again in 2022, although the Coalition needs to win 18 seats to win the election – so it has to win more seats than Labor did in 1999, and it starts from further behind – so, it is unlikely, but you never know what might happen on election day.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) and its partners aimed to keep the remote indigenous community of Palm Island safe while also keeping connection to country strong. The challenge was to prepare and enact an effective COVID-19 response which considered the limited access to the Island, transience of the community, varying levels of health literacy and overcrowding. THHS had to ensure a strong focus on the First Nations people's connection to culture, country, family, and community, whilst maintaining the community's safety during a COVID-19 surge. Find out how they did it and the power of working together to keep communities safe.

Miami and true crime are a match made in, well, hell.Since its inception, the city has attracted nefarious characters, culminating in 1981, when Time magazine released its infamous November issue in which it declared Miami "Paradise Lost." For any other city, it would have been considered a black eye to its reputation, but the Magic City has always found a way to embrace its perceived lawlessness. From authoritarian leaders accused of massacres to serial killers not wanting to be found, the southern tip of Florida can sometimes feel like an alternate reality where being a criminal doesn't stop you from holding a position of power - hell, it doesn't even stop you from holding office.Wanting to preserve South Florida's sordid history are producers Kareem Tabsch and Joey Daoud. Borrowing its name from that Time cover, Paradise Lost: Crime in Miami is a 13-episode podcast - presented by iHeartMedia's My Cultura podcast network and a co-production with Sonoro and Trojan Horse - that delves into some of Miami's most lurid true-crime stories. It made its debut with an episode devoted to the godmother of Miami crime, Griselda Blanco. "Miami is such a wellspring of bizarre stories that it made sense to revisit some of them," Tabsch says. "The podcast tells the story of the city through the crime that has happened here."Tabsch and Daoud felt it was fitting to launch the series with Blanco, a woman whose story has elevated her to mythical status - which perhaps makes people lose sight of the fact that she was also responsible for a lot of death and violence. Known as La Madrina and the "Black Widow," she was accused of having a hand in at least 40 murders between New York City and Miami, including the killing of a two-year-old boy in a drive-by shooting at SW 168th Street and South Dixie Highway in 1982.The second episode focuses on Linda Cooney, the Palm Beach socialite who shot and killed her ex-husband, Jim, in 1992, and later shot and paralyzed her son, Kevin, in 2011 - reportedly with the same gun. Both Tabsch and Daoud have made careers out of storytelling. In addition to cofounding O Cinema, Tabsch codirected the documentaries Mucho Mucho Amor about the life of TV psychic and pop-culture phenomenon Walter Mercado and The Last Resort, which explores 1970s Miami Beach through the lens of photographers Andy Sweet and Gary Monroe. Daoud, a distant relative of former Miami Beach mayor Alex Daoud, who fell from grace on bribery charges in 1991, is also a documentary producer now based in Los Angeles; he and Tabsch codirected the short Dolphin Lover, which tells the story of Malcolm Brenner, a real-life zoophile who claims to have had a sexual relationship with a dolphin."In our show intro, we say, 'Florida: Sunny place for shady people,'" Tabsch says about the city's reputation for illicit doings. "Florida has always been wild, it's always been the Wild West. It feels like there are no rules here, that nobody is going to hold you back. It's a place where people come to reinvent themselves."Miami and the entire state's transient nature is the perfect breeding ground for the WTF headlines that have made the word "Florida" synonymous with crazy crime stories."It's the kind of place you don't want to ask people what they used to do because you don't really want to know," Tabsch asserts. "I also think in a weird way South Florida has embraced its craziness and embraced its criminals. You think of these folks like Griselda and you ask yourself, 'Why are they larger than life characters?' They've become notorious, not just because of the brazenness of what they've done, but there's also this kind of head nod from folks like, 'Yeah, I get it.'"You only have to look at movies like Scarface and prolific characters like Al Capone, who had a mansion on Palm Island and died here in 1947, to know that locals love a good if problematic anti-hero. Perhaps that's what also sets Paradise Lost apart from other true-crime podcasts: it's not necessarily looking to uncover some overlooked piece of evidence or pass judgment - if anything, these stories are already well known to the general public. Instead, Tabsch and Daoud are more interested in what these crimes have to say about South Florida and its culture at large."We don't look at anybody with an idle lens," Tabsch notes. "We are not championing these folks. We're sharing these above-board stories and trying to do a deeper analysis. We want to take larger-than-life, stranger-than-fiction stories and unpack them in ways that our audience will consider what it means."Future episodes of the podcast dissect the stories of Rudy Eugene, who earned the nickname the "Miami zombie" after he attacked and maimed a homeless man; cult leader Yahweh Ben Yahweh; the high-profile murder of designer Gianni Versace; and Jeremy Macauley, who was found guilty of the brutal double murder of Carlos Ortiz and Tara Rosado in Key Largo.Paradise Lost: Crime in Miami can be streamed via iheart.com, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and more.Episodes here: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-paradise-lost-crime-in-mi-96758048/SHOW DESCRIPTIONParadise Lost: Crime in Miami is a conversation between friends, both South Florida natives, about the notorious true crime cases that have occurred in their home state. Each episode cohosts Kareem Tabsch and Joey Daoud narrate the facts of the case, with details, anecdotes and general color offered by an interview guest with a connection to the crime - journalists who covered it, the investigators who solved it, survivors or the perpetrators. In each episode we share the story of true crimes committed right under the Florida sun, from the outrageous to the utterly bizarre.

As life returns, we hope, to a degree of normality, the regular weekday National Radio Centre net will cease. Instead, at 10.30 am on 3.737MHz an informal gathering will take place for those that want to call in and have a QSO. The RSGB would like to thank Nigel, G4RWI, who ran the NRC 80m net every day in 2020 and on weekdays throughout 2021. There were over 400 nets with hundreds of callers and thousands of QSOs. The German national society, DARC, has published the results of the amateur radio survey they conducted for the IARU. They had 550 respondents. The results are available via the DARC website, in German. There are some similarities with the RSGB's survey, as well as opinions on FT8 and licensing. On the third weekends of April and May, the IARU Region 1 organised the first 50MHz and 70MHz Machine Generated Modes-only contests. The official results are now published at iaru-r1.org. Congratulations to G4PLZ, who achieved top placing in both contests in the 6-hour section. His best DX on 50MHz was in excess of 1700km, and he achieved almost 1600km on 70MHz. In line with Government advice, Bletchley Park has relaxed their requirement for mask-wearing and social distancing. Their visit-booking system is still in place. Whilst the RSGB acknowledges that the legal requirement of Covid precautions has been reduced, we wish to take a more cautious approach at the National Radio Centre. As space in the NRC is restricted and there is limited airflow, the wellbeing of visitors and volunteers is paramount. This means many Covid precautions such as face coverings and social distancing within the NRC will still be required. The GB3RS station is still unavailable for visiting amateurs, but we will bring you news when this situation changes. As GB2RS continues to expand, it is a pleasure to extend a warm welcome to two new newsreaders. Leigh, M5GWH has joined the existing team in the Stoke-on-Trent area. Essex newsreaders have been joined by Richard, G0NAD. In addition to reading a brand-new broadcast on 70cm, Richard is also assisting with the 4m service in that area. And listeners in the north of England may like to note that the 145.525MHz broadcast from MM0JNL is now additionally covering Northumbria. The QSL Bureau sub-manager for the G4T-Z group is retiring and a replacement volunteer to distribute cards to this active sub-group is urgently needed. If you are an RSGB Member with time, a little space, some basic computer skills plus the desire to help your fellow members, the bureau would like to hear from you. You can find out more by emailing qsl@rsgb.org.uk. And now for details of rallies and events Before travelling to any rally or event, please check the event's website as there may be alterations or cancellations due to the current restrictions. Now the contest news With different parts of the UK having different lockdown restrictions, please make sure you follow the appropriate regulations. Keep yourself and fellow amateurs safe. The 24-hour Islands On The Air Contest ends its run at 1200UTC today, Sunday the 25th. Using CW and SSB on the 3.5 to 28MHz bands on which contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report, serial number and your IOTA reference. Stations on the UK mainland are IOTA reference EU-005; a full list can be found at iota-world.org. The UK Microwave Group Contest runs from 0600 to 1800UTC today. Using all modes on the 5.7 and 10GHz bands, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On Monday, the 6th FT4 Series will run between 1900 and 2030UTC using the 80m band. The exchange is your 4-character locator. On Tuesday the SHF UK Activity Contest takes place between 1830 and 2130UTC. Using all modes on the 2.3GHz and up bands, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. The Worked-All-Britain 144MHz Low Power Contest will take place on Saturday the 31st of July between 1400 and 1800UTC. The input power is limited to 10 watts and the full rules are on the WAB website. Entries are to be with the contest manager by the 10th of August. Due to the easing of restrictions, the mobile and portable categories will be resumed; but the organisers ask that entrants ‘please act sensibly'. On Saturday, the Fourth 144MHz Backpackers Contest runs from 1400 to 1800UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number, locator and postcode. The 144MHz Low Power contest also takes place on Saturday from 1400 to 2000UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number, locator and postcode. Next Sunday, the 1st of August, the 432MHz Low Power Contest runs from 0800 to 1200UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number, locator and postcode. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA & G4BAO on Friday the 23rd of July Sunspot numbers were down at the start of the week but increased dramatically as the week went on. By Thursday the solar flux index was up to 94 with a sunspot number of 86. There were six active regions visible on the Sun. Although many of these sunspots were quite small and not very complex, they all contributed to the higher solar flux, which is now nudging 100. The region that was active on its last rotation, 2835, and was responsible for multiple coronal mass ejections, appears to have quietened. Nevertheless, the Sun may well be more active next week as some of the regions have produced low-level C-class flare activity over the past few days.  NOAA reports that solar cycle sunspot progression over the past several months has actually been ahead of the cycle 25 forecast. This may bode well for the future. HF propagation remains dominated by Sporadic-E, with daily openings on the upper bands. F2-layer propagation is at seasonal levels, with openings up to 14 and sometimes 18MHz being recorded. We are not seeing much in the way of 21MHz F-layer propagation, but that will kick in as we head into Autumn. Thirty metres, or 10MHz, remains a band to check overnight with MUFs over a 3,000km path typically exceeding 10MHz. Due to all this activity, NOAA has upped its forecast for the coming week. It now has the solar flux index at 85 next week, rising to 90. The geomagnetic prediction is for a maximum Kp index of 2, possibly due to a lack of coronal holes. However, it is too early to say whether we may have any solar flares and CMEs from the new regions currently rotating into view. And now the VHF and up propagation news. After some very good days of Tropo recently, it seems that the picture will look very different in the coming week. The decline of the high pressure will be complete by this weekend and heralds a week of unsettled weather with showers or longer periods of rain. On the upside, this puts rain scatter back on the agenda for the microwave operators. Sporadic-E is still a good contender for DX although heading into August usually thins out the activity. The meteor input to E layer ionisation should keep hopes alive of renewed openings. The jet stream placements are mainly favouring the path to the south into Iberia initially, before moving east later to open up other more eastern parts of Europe. Around we go again into another lunar cycle with negative, but increasing declination, this week. This of course means that we'll see the Moon for longer as each day progresses. Declination goes positive on Thursday, but losses will rise daily after last Wednesday's perigee. Random or sporadic meteor rates are approaching their annual maximum around now, and the Southern delta Aquarids meteor shower is under way. This has a broad ZHR peak of 25 running from the 26th of July through to the 31st. Note that in Europe, the shower radiant is only above the horizon during the night and early morning. There are some other minor showers peaking next week, so we should see excellent meteor scatter conditions. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

As the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 threatens to cause a national outbreak, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are on high alert, particularly in the Northern Territory and north Queensland. Lockdowns in the NT and now parts of Queensland, including the Aboriginal community of Palm Island, have highlighted the vulnerability of First Nations people as vaccination levels remain low.

Parts of Queensland have been plunged into a three-day snap lockdown to combat surging Covid cases. From 6pm tonight (Australia time) until 6pm on Friday, southeast Queensland, Townsville, Palm Island and Magnetic Island will go into lockdown.Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed the decision today, a day after warning the state was "on the verge" of lockdown due to the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant. The stay-at-home orders make Queensland the fourth jurisdiction to impose a lockdown in response to latest outbreak, following NSW, the Northern Territory and Western Australia."As I said yesterday, we are not just fighting one outbreak, we are focusing on a number and some more information has come to light today," Palaszczuk said."We are now dealing with multiple scenarios (and) it's time for us to act quickly and to act fast."Queensland had already reintroduced restrictions from 1am today – including mandatory masks for large parts of the state's southeast – after three new cases were announced on Monday, one of those of the Delta variant.Meanwhile New South Wales have recorded 19 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm (AEST) last night. This brings the total number of cases to 149.Of the new cases, 17 have been linked to known infection, with the source of two cases still under investigation. The Ministry of Health have confirmed that from 11.59pm on Sunday, July 4, the pause on the transtasman bubble will lift for South Australia, ACT, Tasmania and Victoria.Travellers from Australia will need a pre-departure test within 72 hours of their flight, which will need to be negative. (edited)Chris Hipkins said a high level of risk remained for NSW, as well as for Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The pause on those states will be reviewed on Tuesday, July 6.Bloomfield said the 2609 contacts of the Sydney tourist was "way more than we have ever done before".Over 950 people still needed to remain in isolation for the full 14 day period, he said.A third Australian state capital city has gone into lockdown, with Western Australian authorities announcing a four day lockdown in Perth and Peel. The circuit-breaker action comes after a new community case was detected in Perth's northern suburbs. The lockdown came into effect last night at midnight and will last until 12.01am on Saturday, July 3.Government officials have enforced stay home orders, with a ban on private gatherings and a strict 5km travel limit.Schools and childcare centres will stay open.Mask wearing in public will also be mandatory, except during vigorous outdoor exercise or inside a vehicle with members of your own household. The state government has also put a limit on weddings, with five people allowed to celebrate marriages and 10 for funerals.Travel outside the affected regions is also restricted, with a regional boundary in place around Perth and Peel. The drastic action is a result of three Covid cases to surface in the community, with the Western Australian premier Mark McGowan revealing the first person had the Delta variant of the virus. The latest case was identified as a man in his 30s who worked at the Indian Ocean Brewery and who dined there last Tuesday, the same night as the index case. The premier is hoping the lockdown will give enough time for testing and contact tracers to get on top of the outbreak.Victoria recorded zero new local cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday as the rest of Australia grapples with growing outbreaks. The Department of Health confirmed zero new locally acquired cases of coronavirus were recorded by authorities in the past 24 hours. It's the third day in a row Victoria has recorded no new local cases as restrictions continue to ease following the state's latest lockdown.Victoria has shut its border to parts of NSW and the Northern Territory following the explosion of cases.

A solitary figure emerges from an urgent flurry of charcoal lines. Vernon Ah Kee's “Unwritten” is a potent metaphor for the struggle of indigenous artists to control their identities amid the continuing pressures of racism and colonial oppression. In 2004, Ah Kee began a series of large scale photorealistic charcoal portraits of his family members. These works were based upon ethnographic photos taken by the anthropologist Norman Tyndale on Palm Island during the 1930s. In enlarging these images to an imposing scale, Ah Kee returns power to their gaze, reclaiming the ethnographic photography for those who are once its subjects.
