In this episode of Friday Field Notes, Ryan Michler explores a powerful metaphor for masculinity. Drawing from nature, he contrasts the virtuous, leadership-driven traits of lions with the deceptive, self-serving behaviors of hyenas. Through five key distinctions—leading vs. following, earning vs. taking, brotherhood vs. matriarchy, fearlessness vs. deceit, and protection vs. predation—Ryan challenges men to embody the lion's strength and integrity. With personal anecdotes and bold insights, he urges listeners to reject parasitic tendencies and pursue a legacy of righteous living. In the early modern period, both legal and illegal maritime predation was a common occurrence, but the expansion of European maritime empires exacerbated existing and created new problems of piracy across the globe. The Problem of Piracy in the Early Modern World (Amsterdam UP, 2024) addresses these early modern problems in three sections: first, states' attempts to exercise jurisdiction over seafarers and their actions; second, the multiple predatory marine practices considered 'piracy'; and finally, the many representations made about piracy by states or the seafarers themselves.  Across nine chapters covering regions including southeast Asia, the Atlantic archipelago, the North African states, and the Caribbean Sea, the complexities of defining and criminalizing maritime predation is explored, raising questions surrounding subjecthood, interpolity law, and the impacts of colonization on the legal and social construction of ocean, port, and coastal spaces. Seeking the meanings and motivations behind piracy, this book reveals that while European states attempted to fashion piracy into a global and homogenous phenomenon, it was largely a local and often idiosyncratic issue. In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the fascinating behavior of orcas, particularly their recent predation on whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean. Orcas, known as apex predators, have been observed hunting whale sharks in the Gulf of California. This behavior was documented in a new study published in the journal Frontiers of Marine Science, which includes video footage and images of the attacks. The orcas target the whale sharks by striking their underbelly and grabbing their pectoral fins, aiming for the nutrient-rich liver, similar to their hunting strategies for great white sharks. The study tracked four predation events over six years, highlighting a male orca named Moctezuma, who participated in three of these events alongside females from the same pod. This suggests that the orcas are learning and refining their hunting techniques over time. Lewin emphasizes the importance of understanding this new predation behavior, as it indicates that whale sharks have a formidable predator. He also stresses the need for conservation efforts to protect whale sharks, which face threats from climate change, pollution, and fishing activities. The episode concludes with a call for further research and discussion on the implications of orcas hunting whale sharks and the overall health of marine ecosystems. In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Luen discusses a remarkable predation event that occurred in 2014 in the Barents Sea off the coast of Norway. During this event, approximately 2 million Atlantic cod consumed around 10 million capelin, which is nearly 50% of the capelin population present at the time. The episode highlights how this massive predation event was observed using advanced technology, specifically the Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing System (O-A-W-R-S). This system allowed scientists from MIT and Norway to detect and analyze the behavior of the fish during the capelin's spawning season. As the capelin swam deeper to avoid sunlight, they formed a large bait ball, which measured about 10 kilometers long and contained around 23 million fish. The podcast emphasizes the significance of this event as it represents one of the largest predation interactions ever recorded. The coordinated attack by the cod and the formation of the bait ball illustrate the complex dynamics of predator-prey relationships in marine ecosystems. Additionally, Andrew discusses concerns regarding the impact of climate change on these fish populations and their spawning behaviors. He raises questions about the sustainability of such large predation events in the future, considering the potential effects of environmental changes on both capelin and cod populations. The episode concludes with a call for listeners to engage in discussions about ocean conservation and share their thoughts on this fascinating topic. In this episode, I sit down with my good friend Anita Bartholomew, who is deep into writing her upcoming book, "Sacrificial Lambs," which explores the alarming indoctrination happening in our K-12 education system. Have you ever wondered how children are being taught about gender identity in first grade? What happens when the lines between education and ideology blur?Anita shares her journey from being a traditional liberal to confronting the radical shifts in educational content, particularly around queer theory and gender ideology. We discuss the troubling rise in young people identifying as transgender and the role schools play in this phenomenon. How are children being primed for these beliefs, and what impact does this have on their mental health? We dive into shocking examples of curriculum materials that normalize complex and abstract concepts about gender for young children. Are teachers equipped to handle such sensitive topics, or are they overstepping their bounds? As we unravel these issues, we also touch on the implications of comprehensive sexual education and the troubling trend of keeping parents in the dark. What does this mean for the future of our children? Tune in to discover the answers and more as we navigate this critical conversation. For almost three decades, Anita Bartholomew has been one of Reader's Digest's top reporters, and a contributing editor to the magazine for eight of those years. She's covered a vast range of stories over the course of her career. But what's always animated her writing, no matter the topic, is her focus on the people involved, how they coped with the extraordinary events affecting their lives. Her current book project, about how the trans cult targets kids, combines in-depth reporting and analysis with vignettes about the real people trying to maintain sanity in what amounts to a mass psychosis afflicting nearly all of the western world. She is the co-author of the award-winning medical memoir SOMETHING TO PROVE, and the author of SIEGE, about the January 6, 2021 US Capitol uprising. Two of her narratives have been adapted as TV movies, one for Netflix and another for Lifetime.
