His most recent film, The Critic, is arriving in UK cinemas with Ian McKellen in its lead, having had to change casts following the pandemic. Before that, Tucker had briefly been attached to The Golden Compass, had worked on films such as Girl With A Pearl Earring and Shopgirl, and has no shortage too of stories to tell. Which he does on this very podcast... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

(2020). First Rough Night and then Girl With A Pearl Earring. We swear we didn't intend to review two clunkers back to back in our month of ScarJo, but here we are. Truth be told, Girl With A Pearl Earring isn't a bad film and in fact has some really good moments in it. The problem is that everything surrounding those good moments is just...boring. You'll be happy to know, however, that the painting remains a masterpiece. We also briefly discuss The Island, from director Michael Bay, and Sing, from Illumination. There's a lot here, so don't waste another minute and hit play on this bad boy.
This week we chat to film producer Andy Paterson and agent for Georgette Heyer’s estate Peter Buckman, as we try to unravel the mystery of why Heyer’s books haven’t been adapted for the screen. Andy, who has produced such luminous hits as Girl With A Pearl Earring and The Railwayman, chats to us about his latest project, and Peter Buckman elaborates on the more frustrating elements of metamorphosing a book into celluloid… Join in the fun by checking out our book list here: https://fablegazers.wordpress.com/heyer-today-reading-list/ And take part in our conversation here: Twitter: @fable_gazers Insta: @fablegazers Facebook: fb.me/fablegazerspodcasts fablegazers.com

Alexandre Desplat is one of the world's leading composers of film music, with more than 120 scores to his name. His big breakthrough came in 2007 with Girl With A Pearl Earring, and since then he's been nominated for innumerable awards, including eight Oscars. 2015 was a particularly interesting year as Alexandre was Oscar-nominated for two films, with The Grand Budapest Hotel beating The Imitation Game on the night. Alexandre talks to Michael Berkeley about the pressures of writing up to ten film scores a year, the complex relationship between director and composer, and his craving for silence. His choices of music reflect his diverse musical influences - Boulez, Haydn, Miles Davis, Janacek, and his mother's Greek heritage which is often reflected in his film scores. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.

The actor Paddy Considine, known for films including In America, Dead Man's Shoes and Hot Fuzz, has written and directed his first feature film. Orlando Bloom, star of three Pirates of the Caribbean films, reprises his swashbuckling skills as the villainous Duke of Buckingham in a new 3D film of The Three Musketeers. He reflects on his experiences in major film franchises, and the perils of too many swords and sandals roles. Producer Philippa Ritchie.
Renowned architect and interior designer John Saladino took inspiration from the 2003 film Girl With a Pearl Earring for the Veranda townhouse. Based on the story behind Dutch master Johannes Vermeer's 17th century portrait of a servant girl named Griet, the film incorporated Vermeer's iconic themes of light and geometry, which Saladino echoed in the townhouse. He designed the space for an imaginary couple whose primary home is somewhere outside of New York and who purchased a pied-à-terre in Soho. Visit DesignerVisionsOnline.com for more.
