The Glassmaker Exploring Venice, Murano, and the Art of Glass Beads through Tracy Chevalier's Vision Venice, with its dreamy canals and labyrinthine streets, is a city steeped in timeless beauty. But nestled just a stone's throw away is the island of Murano, a place with an equally rich legacy—one forged in fire, colored in precious minerals, and shaped by centuries of craftsmanship. It is here that Tracy Chevalier sets her luminous new historical novel, The Glassmaker. As the host of the Flavor of Italy podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tracy Chevalier about her latest novel, The Glassmaker, which has captured the imagination of readers worldwide. From the shimmer of molten glass to the intricate art of bead-making, Chevalier's novel is both a sweeping saga and an ode to a vanishing world of artistry. If you're fascinated by Italy, women's history, or the centuries-old tradition of Venetian glass, this story—and the story behind the story—is for you.

Classic Debate: Rembrandt vs Vermeer - The Titans of Dutch Painting

Rembrandt van Rijn is the best known of all the Dutch masters. His range was vast, from landscapes to portraits to Biblical scenes; he revolutionised every medium he handled, from oil paintings to etchings and drawings. His vision encompassed every element of life – the sleeping lion; the pissing baby; the lacerated soles of the returned prodigal son. Making the case for him in this debate was Simon Schama. For him Rembrandt is humanity unedited: rough, raw, violent, manic, vain, greedy and manipulative. Formal beauty was the least of his concerns, argues Schama, yet he attains beauty through his understanding of the human condition, including to be sure, his own. But for novelist Tracy Chevalier it can all get a little exhausting. Rembrandt's paintings, she believes – even those that are not his celebrated self-portraits – are all about himself. Championing Vermeer, she claimed that his charm lies in the very fact that he absents himself from his paintings. As a result they are less didactic and more magical than Rembrandt's, giving the viewer room to breathe. Chevalier has been obsessed with Vermeer since the age of 19, when she first saw his Girl with a Pearl Earring. The girl's startled eyes and luscious, inviting mouth produce a tantalising sense of mystery and contradiction. An other-worldly mystery also veils Vermeer's Delft street scenes and interiors. Apparently so everyday, they are lifted to a higher sphere by the indirect gaze and the turned back, all bathed in that fuzzy, filmic Vermeer veneer. And so often they, too, ask a question. Who wrote the letter that the woman in blue reads so attentively? Who does the girl in the gold jacket strum her guitar for? The questions are never answered but we are lured back again and again in search of an answer. Which of these two titans is the greater master – Rembrandt or Vermeer? ------ If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more.

Commentator Mary Klute's report: The first quarter challenge has really inspired pigskin partiers! There has been a lot of chatter in the huddle thread about the new techniques folks are planning to meet the requirements of the challenge!   Some players are planning to tackle knitting techniques that they have never tried before like half fisherman's rib, colorwork, intarsia, magic loop, a new cast on or bind off, and brioche. Others are trying out a new tool like an i-cord maker or a new knitting app Others are trying new kinds of projects: a garment with lace down the side, joggers, knitting a shawl for the first time, knitting a shawl with an unusual construction, and colorwork socks A couple of people have mentioned joining mystery knit a longs for the challenge Others have mentioned using varieties of yarn they've never used before like boucle yarn or non-superwash wool. And a finally a bunch of players are planning crochet projects--some who have never successfully crocheted before and others who want to grow their crochet skills by moving beyond granny squares or learning how to join crocheted pieces. This challenge is really motivating players to step out of their comfort zones!  If you still haven't decided what to do for the quarter 1 challenge--head on over to the huddle thread for some inspiration!    Events NY Sheep & Wool Festival (aka Rhinebeck): October 19 & 20, 2024 in Rhinebeck, NY Fiber Festival of New England- November 2 & 3- Mom, Riley and I are going on Sunday November 3rd Maryland Alpaca and Fleece Festival: November 9-10, 2024 in West Friendship, Maryland For more West Coast (US) event- check out the Seattle Knitters Guild Site.   Contest, News & Notes   My friend Linda is looking for donations of warm handknit/crocheted items for adult and youth homeless in Massachusetts. This is the second instalment of a three-part discussion. Philippa Gregory and Tracy Chevalier have defined the genre of historical fiction for decades. Both renowned for bringing to life women's stories from the past and making them relevant to today's reader, between them they've produced a multitude of global bestsellers including The Other Boleyn Girl and Girl with a Pearl Earring. In September 2024 they joined Reeta Chakrabarti on the Intelligence Squared stage to transport us through time and place. They explored the art of weaving history into compelling narratives, delving into the research that underpins their work and the challenges of crafting authentic voices from the past for those who have had no voice. This was one of the first events at which Tracy discussed her spellbinding new novel The Glassmaker, a richly-drawn tale of artisan craftsmanship, female perseverance, and the beauty of Venice. Philippa talked about her ground-breaking study, Normal Women, which takes women out of the footnotes and reassembles the history of women in England showing how their lives have changed over 900 years from 1066 to the present. Tracy Chevalier's new novel The Glassmaker follows a Murano glassmaking family through hundreds of years of Venetian history. Time plays strange tricks as it follows Orsola Rosso, who is nine in 1486, all the way to the present day, when she is in her late sixties. Tracy joins Anita to discuss her love story that encompasses centuries of passion and longing. 72-year-old Gisele Pelicot has been testifying in court against her husband, Dominique. He is accused of drugging her repeatedly over the course of a decade and inviting men to the house to rape her while she was unconscious. This was only discovered because he was caught by the police for upskirting in 2020. To get the latest updates on the case, Anita speaks to BBC Correspondent Andrew Harding. She is also joined by campaigner Gina Martin, who helped to make upskirting illegal in the UK.A new play, The Lightest Element, which has opened at Hampstead Theatre, explores the life and career of astronomer Cecila Payne-Gaposchkin, the first person to work out what stars are made of. Five more writers go on five reflective, restorative and often playful journeys in search of the final resting places of their literary heroes. Today Tracy Chevalier strolls to Stinsford, the Dorset village where Thomas Hardy's heart is poetically buried separately from his body at Poets' Corner, Westminster – echoing the writer's divided self. Chevalier was born in America but now lives in Hardy's beloved home county, Dorset. She has written 11 novels, including Girl with a Pearl Earring, which was adapted into a film of the same name. Tracy Chevalier discusses a historic Vermeer exhibition at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, the largest collection of his paintings ever assembled including Girl with a Pearl Earring, which was celebrated by Chevalier's 1999 novel of the same name. Bristol Old Vic is collaborating with four universities in the West Country for a major study into audience reactions in the theatre. Do reactions in the auditorium differ from those watching it online? Melanie Abbott investigates, talking to Iain Gilchrist from University of Bristol, Mike Richardson from University of Bath, Charlotte Geeves from Bristol Old Vic, actor Sophie Steer and Emma Keith, Director of Digital Media at the National Theatre. The finely wrought rhyming and metrical poetry of A. E. Stallings has won her prizes in the US, but until now she has not been published in the UK. Manchester-based publisher Carcanet is putting this right with This Afterlife, her Selected Poems. A. E. Stallings talks about living in Greece, drawing on classical mythology, making art out of the minutiae of life, and the joy of rhythm and rhyme. Jonathan Howard of The King's Singers tells us about the recent cancellation of a concert they were due to perform at Pensacola Christian College in Florida, over what the group says were "concerns related to the sexuality of members." It is 1932, England and all of Europe is still under the cloud of World War I. So many men died in the war that there are thousands upon thousands of young widows or unmarried ‘spinsters' who are dubbed ‘surplus woman', woman who will be unlikely to marry or have children. Violet Speedwell is one such woman; at thirty-eight, she has lost both her older brother and her finance, Laurence. Violet's mother is inconsolable over the death of her oldest son, and is super-critical of her daughter, so much so that she makes Violet's life miserable, and Violet longs to get away from her home and town where she feels suffocated by the life of caring for her aging mother. When Violet spots an ad for a typist in a nearby town, she applies, and immediately accepts the low-paying job when it is offered. When it became clear that Mrs. Speedwell was not going to see her off as she normally did, watching from the doorway until visitors were out of sight, Violet went over and kissed her on the forehead. “Good-bye, Mother” she murmured. “I'll see you next Sunday.”Mrs. Speedwell sniffed,. “Don't bother. I may be dead by then.”And thus Violet begins her new life, living in a boardinghouse with other young women and working long hours typing forms for an insurance company. Excited by the new freedom, she puts up with meals of sardines on toast or beans on toast. She took herself to the cinema every week—her one indulgence, which she paid for by going without a meal that day. Her life is dreary and lonely until one day she goes to the grand cathedral in Winchester and happens onto a particular service, one filled with mostly older  women. She is not at the church to pray, ”prayers had died in the war alongside George and Laurence and a nation full of young men.”It turns out to be a special mass for broderers, i.e. women who embroider seat cushions and kneelers  for the hard wooden benches of the cathedral. At first blocked from entering the group, she persists and eventually is allowed to be a part of the group. An so begins a new and much less socially impoverished  life as she befriends other broderers and comes under the very kind tutelage of Miss  Pesel, one of two women in charge of the group of women. When I picked up this novel, I knew nothing of spinning, weaving, crocheting , or embroidering, but I was fascinated by the descriptions and by the friendships between the women. Although Violet has had very limited introduction to needlework, she quickly takes to it under the watchful eye of Miss Pesel. She also becomes friends with an older man, Arthur, who is a bell-ringer for the cathedral. Arthur is married to a woman who is frail and ailing, unable to recover from the loss of her son in the war.In order to be allowed to attend the daytime broderers meetings, Violet comes up with a plan to improve efficiency in the insurance office  such that it will allow both she and Olive, the other typist to attend the meetings.“But, Miss Speedwell, I  shall say this  idea came from me, if you don't mind,” he added with a frown. “I can't think what management would say about a girl having such a ...progressive idea”The author, Chevalier, has such a wonderful ear for the nuances and prejudices of this time in a Europe decimated by one war and on the eve of another. Violet decides on a walking tour in the country in place of the holidays of the past spent with her mother and younger brother and his family. She has a frightening encounter with a man she calls the corn man, having met him in a cornfield and then followed by him. Having walked to Sthe small town where Arthur lives, she confides in him about the scare she has had. “ He frightened you?”“Yes” Arthur looked at her waiting.“It's not easy being a woman on your your own,” Violet explained after a moment. “No one expects it, though there are plenty of us. The ‘surplus women'. One would think it would not be such a surprise to see a woman walk through a field, or have a cup of tea in a pub.”This is such a lovely little novel; I didn't expect to be so intrigued by it, reading it as a kind  of respite from two rather heavy novels, but by the end, I knew I had to call it to the attention of other readers.Among the broderers, Violet becomes a special friend of Gilda, and Gilda seems to light up when yet another woman, DJ, Dorothy, shows up at meetings. When Gilda appeared—out of breath and shouting hello—DJ started,  and suddenly solidified, as if outlined by solid black. She did not stop smiling, but her eyes drifted toward the corner of the room as if to dodge attention. Gilda too seemed out of sorts, looking everywhere but at DJ, and laughing a little too brightly as she removed her cloche...Violet discovered that there was something to discover, though she did not yet understand what it was.Only Violet and eventually Miss Pesel accept the relationship between the two women. There was something around them that made them seem closer than others, although they were not actually standing closer or even looking at each other. It was like an invisible fence, penning them together.“That's what can happen when you're a spinster.”It was said quietly, behind Violet, one woman to another. There was sarcasm in the words and a harshness, and something like fear.. Violet comes to see just how lovely and natural the relationship between Gilda and DJ is, opening her eyes to new possibilities.

Rachel and Simon speak with Jonny Geller, one of the best known literary agents in London. Jonny joined Curtis Brown in 1993 as an assistant after a short career as an actor. He became a literary agent in 1995 after discovering a novel on the unsolicited pile which went on to sell rights worldwide. He became CEO of the agency in 2012 and is now also CEO of the overall Curtis Brown Group. Jonny's clients include novelists William Boyd, Monica Ali, Tracy Chevalier, David Mitchell and Elif Shafak, as well as former British prime minister Gordon Brown and the musician Bono. He represented David Cornwell, aka John le Carré, until his death last year and now represents his estate, as well as that of James Bond creator Ian Fleming. We spoke to Jonny about his unusual entry into the world of literary agenting, his approach to selling books, and how he combines the role of CEO with handling his authors. Tracy Chevalier is best-known for her international bestseller Girl with a Pearl Earring. She has published 9 other novels, mainly historical fiction. Tracy grew up in Washington DC and moved to London many years ago, where she lives with her husband, son and cat. And Tracy has been an important part of Alexandria's London life… So, this is a special extended episode. ⚡️ Hear how the pandemic has influenced the direction of Tracy's current novel. We talk about things big and small, from storytelling essentials to life & lipstick. Special thanks to Tracy for writing a new scenario for the Ideal Lifestyle Vision Promo in the middle of this episode! ✨ If this isn't hygge I don't know what is! This is one of Tracy's favourite recipes. “It's delicious, simple to make and always wonderful”. https://www.wallacesewell.com/ (Wallace & Sewell) UK-based British design studio, specialising in bold and colourful textiles. Tracy's favourite accessory in her current wardrobe is a Wallace & Sewell scarf. She wore it on a trip to Paris and said, “I just felt like I could stand amongst the Parisian women who all know how to wear scarves well, and hold my head high”. Tracy's Immersive Writing WorldShe may not have done her KonMari Marathon yet, but Tracy has already embraced an important KonMari concept. She has surrounded herself with joy. Tracy's home studio is the perfect example of this. In creating an immersive world for herself in which to write, she has built joy into her daily life and surroundings… "So I love looking up and going, ahh, you're surrounded with your writing life and reminders of your writing life. And then beyond the cubby holes (on the walls on either side of me), I paste up quotes, photographs and drawings from whatever I'm working on at the time".Tracy has her very own cabinet of curiosities. Her study features cubby holes, where she curates memorabilia from her books. Yes, there's even one corner that's all Girl with a Pearl Earring “kitsch stuff”. Saying No (more often)The pandemic has given us all time to reflect and consider what we want more of (and less of) in our lives. How do we want to live… going forward? Tracy has realised that she really loves unstructured time and wants to actively create more of it by saying no more often. How could you say no more often? Next time you consider taking on a new project or are asked to do something, pause and think about why you would do it… Would you earn, learn or do good? Would you feel adequately compensated for your time and energy? If not, dare to say no. Style NotesJust because everyone else says you should do something, it doesn't mean you need to follow their advice. Like Tracy, you can choose not to wear red lipstick. You can make your own style waves.

We really take out the trash on this one. Our friend Jessica joins us to discuss some very frustrating themes in The Girl with a Pearl Earring and reinforce that feminist historical fiction is incredible - when done well. We talk about the pros and cons of young ScarJo and Colin Firth, and call on the powers of Patty Jenkins to remake this movie.   Episode Drink: The New Maid 2 oz Vodka ¾ oz Simple Syrup 1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice Small handful of mint leaves 3 slices of cucumber Add the cucumber and mint to the bottom of the cocktail shaker and muddle to release the fresh juices. Then fill with ice, Vodka, Simple Syrup, fresh squeezed lime. Give is a good shake then with a fine mesh strainer, strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and slice of cucumber.   Recipe:  Liquor.com   Our Drinking Game for this Story: Take a drink: Every time Griet hides her face Every time you see her mouth open Every time she gasps needlessly Every time Cornelia is a little shit And lastly, down your drink when you're just done with the male gaze and how shitty this movie is because of its male directing. Try not to think about how great it could have been with a feminist director.   Please drink responsibly! Hail hydrate. Cheerful Ears: Jordan: Print Run Em: David Tennant Does a Podcast With...
