See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hope you're hungry! We ring in Spooky Season with a trio of Thomas Harris also-rans that are only suitable for a well-scrubbed rube. Okey dokey! HANNIBAL (2001, Ridley Scott) RED DRAGON (2002, Brett Ratner) HANNIBAL RISING (2007, Peter Webber)
Andrew and Dave are back! Unfortunately, they also have to contend with the misbegotten cinematic return of Hannibal Lecter in the form of director Peter Webber's 2007 film HANNIBAL RISING, the film which ostensibly tells the origins of the infamous fiction serial killer, though good luck finding anything that the character named Hannibal in this film has in common with the earlier incarnations. Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat is the featured guest on this Score to Screen podcast. Desplat reflects on how he crafted the modern score for Little Women by drawing on personal memories with his sisters, utilizing two pianists and four hands to represent the women in the film, and recording in New York City with various esteemed musicians. Little Women is written and directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) and draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott. In Gerwig's take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms – is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March. Composer, orchestrator and conductor Alexandre Desplat is one of the most worthy heirs of the French film scoring masters. A true cinephile, his approach to film composition is not only based on his strong musicality, but also on his understanding of cinema, which allows him to intimately communicate with directors. Inspired by the works of Maurice Jarre, Bernard Herrmann, Nino Rota and Georges Delerue, he expressed his desire to compose for cinema early on but really made his decision after listening to John Williams' Star Wars score. After scoring fifty European films, with legendary French directors such as Philippe de Broca and Francis Girod, in 2003 he burst onto the Hollywood scene with his evocative score to Peter Webber's Girl with a Pearl Earring. In 2007 he received his first Academy Award nomination for Stephen Frears' The Queen which earned him his first European Film Award. The same year he won the Golden Globe, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award and the World Soundtrack Award for his score to John Curran's The Painted Veil. In 2010-2011 Desplat scored David Yates' films Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. In 2018, Desplat won an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. He was nominated in 2019 for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs, and in 2020 for an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for Little Women. The Score to Screen podcast series is produced and hosted by Crossover Media's Max Horowitz. Listen to the full Little Women Soundtrack here. Hey everyone! I’m so glad you are tuning into this very important episode. There are several news stories that have wiggled their way into my subconscious, so I asked Some Guy in Austin to help me process through my emotions of what all this means to my life. We discuss Taylor Swift, the new bachelor Peter Webber, and of course, Kanye West. And if you want to know everything about this year’s Grammys, we have no idea who the nominees are and will be of no help anticipating if he/she/or they will win. Our lack of knowledge is comical. It also makes us feel very old. Enjoy. EPISODE NOTES: Here's a list of all the Grammy nominees for this year. Interested in the Taylor Swift/Scooter Braun kerfuffle? Here's a timeline of events that I found very interesting. Kanye West has a gospel album and you can preview it HERE. Bless Bachelor Peter Webber and his first promo. The end. I wanted to let those of you who live in or around the Houston area to know that I am going to be speaking at Bethel Church on December 5 for their women’s Christmas dinner. In this episode, I talk about Peter Webber's 2003 film "Girl with a Pearl Earring." It's an adaptation of the 1999 Tracy Chevalier novel by the same name, which imagines how Johannes Vermeer's 17th century painting, "Girl with a Pearl Earring" came to be. It's 1665 in Delft, Holland and a young girl named Griet goes to work at the home of the Vermeers to provide for her family after her father is injured at work. She enters a home rocked by domestic and financial instability. When Vermeer starts to paint Griet to appease his lecherous patron, more drama ensues as Vermeer's wife becomes jealous and the attraction between Vermeer and Griet intensifies. I discuss the profound impact that both the book and the film had on my life because it sparked my deeper engagement with art. For this episode, I talk about Johannes Vermeer's life and art, and I explain why I think the film is so powerful in the way that it centers the life of a teenage girl who is a maid, explores the difficulties of women's lives in the 17th century, and shows the power of art to expand and enrich our minds. Gillian McIver‘s Art History for Filmmakers: The Art of Visual Storytelling (Bloomsbury, 2016) is a ground-breaking book that illustrates the relationships among the histories of painting and cinema. Of interest to established filmmakers, students of film, and those engaged with the history of art and visual storytelling overall, Art History for Filmmakers is a comprehensive study of the ways in which painting and film influence one another in terms of light, composition, subject matter, theme and style. McIver presents examples of the impact of painting from the antique to the modern upon the work of filmmakers Peter Greenaway, Martin Scorcese, Peter Webber, Stan Douglas, Guillermo de Toro, John Ford and others. Through an array of color images, McIver demonstrates how Dutch Baroque, Realism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Minimalism and other art historical movements shape story and appearance in film. Art History for Filmmakers also provokes consideration of the ways the language of film brings idea and form to painting. Chapters are followed by creative exercises and discussion questions that further understanding of the material. Kirstin L. Ellsworth has a Ph.D. in the History of Art from Indiana University (2005) and currently is an Assistant Professor of Art History at California State University Dominguez Hills. Renowned architect and interior designer John Saladino took inspiration from the 2003 film Girl With a Pearl Earring for the Veranda townhouse. Based on the story behind Dutch master Johannes Vermeer's 17th century portrait of a servant girl named Griet, the film incorporated Vermeer's iconic themes of light and geometry, which Saladino echoed in the townhouse. He designed the space for an imaginary couple whose primary home is somewhere outside of New York and who purchased a pied-à-terre in Soho. Visit DesignerVisionsOnline.com for more.
