Four Play's Scary Deep Cuts arc begins with a brooding, psychological horror film that few have seen: Session 9 by director Brad Anderson. Filmed at the derelict Danvers State Medical Hospital in Massachusetts using props left in the building, the movie tells the story of an asbestos removal team losing their sanity in an apparently haunted building. Anchored by solid performances by Peter Mullan and David Caruso, alongside a host of talented character actors, Session 9 delivers a slow burning plot dripping with dread. Tune in as Arthur's pal Robyn Zabukovec pops back up on 2CC for a discussion on Shallow Grave, the 1994 thriller that follows an obnoxious trio of British flatmates who descend into paranoia after dealing with the corpse and the big bag of money that have fallen into their laps. The black comedy that this film manages to smoothly blend in with its suspense, appreciation for onscreen blood that avoids looking too fake, the time when the cops had caught Robyn jaywalking through a blizzard, and whether it's less painful to die from the heat or from the cold comprise just some of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Danny Boyle, Shallow Grave stars Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston, Kerry Fox, Keith Allen, Ken Stott, Colin McCredie, Peter Mullan, Leonard O'Malley, Tony Curran, and John Hodge.
Ah, we're back. We're back in Scotland. I don't remember it being so "blue". Not only that, it's really dark, and moderately attractive men are acting like right twats to very attractive ladies. We're back on the "Ewan Train" with David Mackenzie's YOUNG ADAM. The "erotic" (?) drama about a bunch of folk on a barge and the lives Ewan McGregor's character basically ruins for the sake of creative inspiration. Yeah, doesn't make the most endearing of central characters but that's kinda the point. The one thing we did agree upon at least was the inclusion of custard. More custard, please! There's a bunch of sex in this but it's not as central as you'd think it would be. It just IS, so strap in, we've got a fair amount of stuff to talk about on this one.

In Part 2 of our episode, The Claim (2000) was directed by Michael Winterbottom and stars Peter Mullan, Sarah Polley, Wes Bentley and Milla Jovovich. This one has a similar theme to McCabe, though the romance side is pushed a little more forward. But there are many striking similarities between the two films, as different as they are. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In Reel 76, we look at another pair of allegorical films. We begin with Thief (1981), directed by Michael Mann, and move on to The Long Good Friday (1982), directed by John Mackenzie. Tune in as this show kicks off a new theme month for all of May: the Rebecca Hall of Fame! For this first podcast of the month to honor one of Arthur's all-time favorite actors, Joe Lipsett (Horror Queers, Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr) is returning to the guest chair for a breakdown of Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1974, the 2009 period crime drama-thriller that stands as the first film entry in a limited series made for British television called the Red Riding Trilogy. The bleak and nihilistic territory that this series boldly treads into, the surprising amount of homoerotic undertones in 1974, and some gripes with a divisive little filmmaker known as Zack Snyder comprise just a few of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Julian Jarrold, Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1974 stars Andrew Garfield, Rebecca Hall, Sean Bean, Warren Clarke, John Henshaw, Anthony Flanagan, Robert Sheehan, Eddie Marsan, Sean Harris, Tony Mooney, Steven Robertson, Cathryn Bradshaw, David Morrissey, Michelle Dockery, Daniel Mays, Peter Mullan, and Mary Jo Randle. Hello, and welcome to the latest edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. This is a bittersweet episode; basically an edited and extended version of the audio commentary I recorded with director David Leland eighteen months before his death on Christmas Eve at the age of 82. The commentary was ostensibly for his 1990 drama The Big Man, starring Liam Neeson, Billy Connolly, Ian Bannen, Joanne Whalley – then Joanne Whalley-Kilmer – Hugh Grant and Peter Mullan, but David was so generous with his time we ended up talking about other films, including Mona Lisa, Personal Services, and Wish You Were Here, with sidebars about Harvey Weinstein, Ennio Morricone, Jeremy Irons, Pierce Brosnan and Tennesse Williams. It doesn't really cue up with the film, but if you haven't seen The Big Man, I urge you to check out Plumeria Pictures' extras-packed Blu-ray, available from PlumeriaPics.co.uk I feel so privileged to have been able to meet David to discuss his incredible body of work, and hope you enjoy this look back at a brilliant career. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. We have lots of exciting episodes in the works, so if you like what you hear – or just the idea – please subscribe, and remember to rate us wherever you hear this podcast – it'll really help us to keep going. Oh, and follow us on Twitter and/or Instagram to stay up-to-date on our forthcoming releases. Thanks for listening! A Synchronicity production. Conceived, written and presented by David Hughes. New series airing Sunday 29th on TVNZ 1 which Robyn Malcolm co-created, called After the Party. The series follows Penny (Malcolm), as her world implodes when she accuses her husband Phil (played by Scottish actor Peter Mullan) of a sex crime against her daughter's teenage friend and nobody believes her. Five years later, he returns from Scotland and moves in with Penny's daughter Grace (newcomer Tara Canton) and grandchild. Grace begs her to put the past behind them, but when Phil takes up a teaching position Penny is again compelled to prove his guilt, reopening barely covered wounds in those around her and causing Grace to cut her out of her life. An increasingly alienated Penny is forced to choose what's more important – the truth or her relationship with her daughter. This week the boays are joined by actor Martin Quinn. Martin discusses how getting a part in Limmy's Show as a teenager helped soften his Paisley schoolmate's attitudes towards his pursuit of drama, how he's tried to avoid adopting a "Gla-merican" accent to be better understood in the US, and why he threatened to batter Scottish director Peter Mullan. Really though this is another wide-ranging conversation with too many topics covered to mention, but along the way they touch on going to cubs and scouts as kids, karate, unhelpful mates, talent shows, acting auditions, and sexy talk in the bedroom. Plus, Martin gives some great advice for overcoming nerves, and how it's helped him become a more accomplished actor.(We recorded this a while ago before we were allowed to talk about what Martin got cast in, you can look it up now though as it's already been out) A video version of this podcast is available on YouTube, where you can subscribe for all future episodes: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxeugCQL5zyVhd7pCEAi9GAWe're now on Patreon! Hello! Welcome to another edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. This episode is sponsored by boutique Blu-ray label Plumeria Pictures, whose latest release is The Big Man, aka Crossing the Line, an underrated 1990 drama with a blistering lead performance by Liam Neeson, and a cast that includes Joanne Whalley, Ian Bannen, Billy Connolly, Hugh Grant, Peter Mullan and more. The Blu-ray contains not one but three new audio commentaries, from producer Stephen Woolley, director David Leland and screenwriter Don Macpherson. Check out this and other Plumeria exclusives at PlumeriaPics.co.uk and use code ROGUE10 at checkout to get 10% off storewide. For this, our 25th episode, I'm delighted to welcome Academy Award® nominated screenwriter, director, podcaster and famous non-reader of scripts Josh Olson, for a walk through A History of Violence, David Cronenberg's 2005 adaptation of the 1997 graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke. Olson received his first Oscar® nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film, and if you've read the source material, it's easy to see why, as he distilled the essence from Wagner and Locke's neo-noir page-turner – which is almost impossible not to read in a single sitting – into a film that goes fathoms deeper in its exploration of how violence infects ordinary people, as insidiously, inescapably and devastatingly as any of the physiological effects in Cronenberg's body-horror oeuvre. I'm immensely grateful to Josh for joining me on this journey, not least because his episode-by-episode deconstruction of The West Wing in his and Dave Anthony's podcast The West Wing Thing, was key to making lockdown bearable. I'm also a long time fan of his other podcast, The Movies That Made Me, and I'm now juggling episodes of that with episodes of his brilliant audio drama podcast Bronzeville, starring Laurence Fishburne, Lorenz Tate, Mekhi Pfeiffer, Lance Reddick and many more, with his new politics podcast The Audit. In short, it's all Josh all the time on my podcast player. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. Hello! Welcome to the latest edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. In this, the 21st episode, I'm very excited to be joined by screenwriter Don MacPherson, who skilfully adapted William McIlvanney's brilliant novel The Big Man into the hugely underrated film of the same name, directed by David Leland and starring Liam Neeson, Ian Bannen, Billy Connolly, Joanne Whalley-Kilmer, Hugh Grant and Peter Mullan, with music by Ennio Morricone. Produced by Stephen Woolley under the Palace Pictures banner, The Big Man sadly wasn't a big hit, but it really captures the spirit not only of McIlvanney's extraordinarily insightful novel, but also of the times, specifically the crushed spirits of the colliery workers and their communities in the aftermath of Thatcher's crushing of the miner's strike. I'm very grateful to Don for walking us through the making of The Big Man, which is ripe for reassessment and well worth seeking out. In the meantime, here's a Letterboxd link. Thanks to Nick Pourgorides from Casarotto Ramsay & Associates for putting us in touch. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. Presented by Kate Molleson from Glasgow. As the Burrell Collection reopens in Glasgow after a £68 million refit, Sunday Post art critic Jan Patience discusses the significance of the gallery, which includes rare Persian carpets, Chinese ceramics and sculptures by Rodin. Director Cora Bissett talks about Orphans – the new musical from the National Theatre of Scotland, adapted from Peter Mullan's 1998 cult classic film set in Glasgow. Belgian clarinettist Annelien Van Wauwe is in Glasgow to perform the world premiere of Sutra with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. She tells Kate about collaborating with composer Wim Henderickx to create a concerto inspired by Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the first scriptures of yoga, and how yoga can help musicians find their flow. Hannah Lavery is the recently appointed Edinburgh City Makar, the city's poet laureate. She discusses her new role and her debut poetry collection Blood, Salt, Spring, a seemingly real time meditation on where we are – exploring ideas of nation, race and belonging. This week the group tackles the the themes of remorse and madness by making themselves crazy watching another Gerard Butler film with 2018's The Vanishing, which might be a cautionary tale of why you shouldn't work lighthouse duty or maybe it's just an excuse to work in Scotland. Also, Sarcastro pitches his improvements for the story by adding in Andre the Giant through archived footage and the gang is all about it. Directed by Krystoff Nyholm and also starring Peter Mullan (of Braveheart fame) and Connor Swindells.
Edi Stark talks to the award winning actor, writer and director. Peter talks for the first time about his son's struggle with autism and how that affects family life.
Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV series has cast 20 new actors, including Arrowverse star Cynthia Addai-Robinson and Ozark's Peter Mullan.
