Remember the simpler times with dial-up internet and chatrooms without creeps? Crazy that was only 20 years ago, right? We follow up this week with Tom and Meg in rom-com #3 where they finally live in the same city. But is their relationship any less creepy? Brennan: yes, Erin: no. It was a magical time where bookstore chains encroaching on pseudo-intellectual liberals were the primary concern for the upper west side, and the notion of mega-overlord Bezos was just a dystopian future. We follow the paths of NY152 and ShopGirl as they navigate online romance and business competition. But only one of the two seems to be able to afford the apartment they're living in.

Suzanne Colmer is the founder of Your Shop Girl, a style and image consulting company in Toronto. She specializes in closet cleanses and educational shopping experiences and what she knows best is how to develop a wardrobe that you actually use 100% of. Suzanne is a graduate of George Brown's Image Consulting program and has enhanced her studies at both the Sorbonne University in France and The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Often sought out by media as a style expert, she has been featured in The Toronto Star, on Rogers TV, CBC Radio, City Line, and Global TV. Suzanne marries the art of dressing with the science of it, and she'll explain to us how establishing a foundation for your clothing and allows you to coordinate multiple outfits with minimal pieces. With the start of the new year, people start taking inventory of their wardrobes, their habits, and their goals. Suzanne sometimes forgets she's in fashion because she sees how people present themselves as so much deeper than just dressing people like barbie dolls. She wants to understand who people are and who they want to be in order to accurately help people present themselves to the world. As a sociology and philosophy major, she is fascinated by the one on one with people. Seeing people make the connection between why they like something and how they can replicate the things that work for them. Pairing the understanding of what works with the knowledge of fashion and clothing, Suzanne loves the transformations in her clients. Moms put themselves on the back burner. With a long list of other people's needs coming before ours, we neglect our needs. How many of us are like Sabrina, and haven't bought a new item of clothing (besides socks and underwear) in years? Do your clothes fit you still? Have you changed in the last 5 years? Has your wardrobe? Finances are tight and obligations are many. How do we start? Start with taking inventory of your closet. Does everything fit who you are right now? Are they you? From age, body changes, and life changes, you have to look at who you are right now and what you want to portray to the world. Can you come up with 3 words to describe how you want to be seen? Approachable? Effortless? Dramatic? Fashion-forward? or Minimalistic? Find your ideal style words. It can be slightly difficult, so try finding 10-12 pictures on something like a Pinterest board that inspires you. Or maybe they are the same types of outfits. Find words that you would use to describe those pictures and find the common ones on your board. When you're shopping for clothing, you can put together 100 different outfits that would look good on you, but only 2-3 of them would be ones that made you feel your best. When you reflect on your style and how you want the world to see you, the outfit that makes you feel good is the one you want to wear. A fashion consultant like Suzanne takes their clients through a process to uncover these outfits. Tailored to the individual, Your Shop Girl begins with an understanding of the style that would work for them. Sometimes they will go through closets and pick out the pieces that would work, or they skip that step and start fresh. From there, Suzanne discusses the benefits of capsule wardrobes. Not wanting to take longer than necessary each morning, by having pieces that work with 2-3 other pieces in your wardrobe you have the ability to build an outfit. Capsule wardrobes are thought of as made up of 6 clothing options, organized like a pyramid. With a layering piece at the top to design the capsule around, like a cardigan or a jacket, you pair it with 2 bottom options underneath. Under that would be 3 top options that would work with both the bottoms and finally, 4 accessories that would change the look for the outfits. Any piece from the levels would coordinate with the other levels of the pyramid,

Kathleen Kelly is involved with Frank Navasky, a leftist newspaper writer for The New York Observer who is always in search of an opportunity to write for the underdog. While Frank is devoted to his typewriter, Kathleen prefers her laptop and logging into her AOL email account. Using the screen name "Shopgirl," she reads an email from "NY152", the screen name of Joe Fox, whom she first met in an "over-30s" chatroom. As her voice narrates her reading of the email, she reveals the boundaries of the online relationship: no specifics, including no names, career or class information, or family connections. These opening scenes are an overload of 90's sounds from the internet loading to the AOL robot voice of "You've Got Mail." Joe belongs to the Fox family that runs Fox Books a chain of mega-bookstores. Kathleen runs the independent bookstore The Shop Around The Corner that her mother ran before her. The two are shown passing each other on their separate ways to work, revealing that they visit the same neighborhoods in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Joe arrives at work, supervising the opening of a new Fox Books in New York City with the help of his best friend, branch manager Kevin. Kathleen and her three store assistants, George, Aunt Birdie, and Christina, open up her small shop that morning. Following a day with his 11-year-old aunt Annabel and 4-year-old half-brother Matthew, Joe enters Kathleen's store to let his younger relatives experience story time. Joe and Kathleen have a conversation that shows Kathleen's fears about the Fox Books store opening around the corner. He withholds his last name and makes a sharp exit with the children. At a publishing party for New York book business people later that week, Joe and Kathleen meet again where Kathleen discovers Joe's true identity. She accuses him of deception and spying, while he responds by disparaging her bookstore. The Shop Around the Corner slowly goes out of business. Kathleen enters Fox Books to discover the store is friendly and relaxed yet without the same dedication to or knowledge of children's books as her shop. Her employees move on: Christina goes job hunting, George gets a job at the children's department at the Fox Books store, and Birdie retires. When the two finally decide to meet, Joe discovers with whom he has been corresponding. At first, he chooses not to meet her but then joins her without revealing his online identity, leading them to argue once more. Joe later resumes the messages, apologizes, and promises to tell her why he stood her up eventually. After both quietly break up with their significant others, Joe realizes his feelings towards Kathleen and begins building a face-to-face relationship, still keeping his online identity a secret. He plans a meeting between his online persona and her, but just before she is to meet her online friend, Joe reveals his feelings for her. When she is waiting for "NY152" at the meeting spot, she sees Joe and his dog, realizing he was "NY152" the whole time. On this particular day the said girl wore a ribbon in her hair to work and I remember complimenting it and then after work she mentioned that she wore it for me and that she wanted to look pretty for me. Our hero loves a first! We tackle a book review, a study over the novella by Steve Martin (yes, that Three Amigos one) called SHOPGIRL. What started as an innocent conversation about books after her Beauty and the Beast episode (, Nick told Kyle (star of ) to check out Shopgirl and The Pleasure Of My Company, and with Nick throwing it down, Kyle brought it! (She also let Nick borrow her copy of the book to re-read for this podcast. Thanks Kyle!!) We've never done a book review before on our show, not as thoroughly enough to call a whole episode a book review, but we really suggest you read the book before you listen. We get into some nitty gritty stuff and naturally spoilers follow. So with that said, did Kyle enjoy the book? Did it hold up for Nick? And what about that pesky movie? We all know the awful sound of connecting to dial-up. But can you imagine a whole movie as painful as that? Yeah? Then join us as we tear apart the sickly-sweet 1998 romantic comedy about two people conducting emotional affairs: "You've Got Mail." This box office blockbuster pulled in a quarter of a billion dollars by making infidelity look like a fun walk through Central Park in the fall. Tom Hanks plays "NY152," a successful executive for a chain of mega-bookstores who has everything—except the most important thing of all: true love. Meg Ryan plays "Shopgirl," a perky pixie of a woman who runs a small bookstore, yet secretly wonders if she hasn't dared to dream big enough. Hang out with us as we discuss the magic of having a pen pal, if the patent for sharpened dildos is still available, our loving homage to the memory of Nora Ephron, and the cathartic joys of burning down orphanages. Yes, you read that correctly. Don't worry; it's a good time.
