Welcome back to Spill Your Guts! I'm your host, Kevin Lane. We took some time over the summer to recalibrate and get ahead of creating a hell of a lineup for all our listeners. We've been doing Spill Your Guts for over 80 episodes now, and I can safely say that this is going to be some of our best. We are also doing a literary series with the biggest authors in horror fiction. It's a very exciting time for horror readers, as there are so many brilliant and diverse authors out there, creating stories that are reshaping the genre and what we've come to expect. This episode features one such author. Christopher Golden is a New York Times bestselling author and Bram Stoker Award winner, and he's become a household name in horror fiction with masterfully written novels such as "Snowblind", "Ararat", "Road of Bones", "All Hallows", and "The Nightbirds", to name a few.His work moves like a runaway train of terror and atmosphere that has caused me to read most of them in one sitting. There are few authors working that can compete with Christopher in creating the pace and atmosphere that he does. We also discuss his new anthology book, which he co-edited with Brian Keene, based in the world of Stephen King's iconic "The Stand", of which King himself gave the book his blessing. It's a must-have book for King fans, and really anyone who loves horror. It features stories from a long list of the greatest writers working in the genre today. The book is called "The End of the World as we know it", and is available now. So let's explore the worlds of frosty ghosts, spectral savage wolves, the true darkness of Halloween, and the scariest witches I have ever encountered in the history of horror. On 1st September 1599, Dorcas Martin — translator, bookseller, Puritan, and wife of Sir Richard Martin, twice Lord Mayor of London — was laid to rest at All Hallows, Tottenham. Though she lived much of her life in her husband's shadow, Dorcas carved out a place of her own in Elizabethan London. She acted as a bookseller during the fierce “pulpit wars” between Puritan preacher Thomas Cartwright and John Whitgift, and her translations of prayers and psalms appeared in "The Monument of Matrones" (1582) — the very first anthology of women's writing published in England. In this podcast, I explore the life of Dorcas Martin: - Her family and marriage to Sir Richard Martin, Master of the Mint and Lord Mayor. - Her bold role in circulating controversial Puritan texts. - Her translations and inclusion among the first printed voices of English women. - Her enduring legacy, remembered in epitaphs and dedications. Dorcas may not have been a queen or martyr, but her voice shaped Elizabethan religious culture. It's time to remember her. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 31, 2024 is: hallowed • HAL-oad • adjective Hallowed describes something, such as a memorial, considered holy or blessed, or something that is highly respected and revered. // The church stands on hallowed ground. // Community service is one of the organization's most hallowed traditions. See the entry > Examples: "Writing these words, I'm sitting in the living room of my childhood home, about five feet from the shelves that long ago contained those hallowed books from my aunt. In this exact spot, even before I had learned how to spell and write, I would scribble on blank paper with Magic Markers and staple the pages together—always, this desire, this drive to make books." — Zachary Pace, LitHub.com, 23 Jan. 2024 Did you know? The adjective hallowed, meaning "holy" or "revered," isn't especially spooky, but its history is entwined with that of a certain spooky season. Hallowed is the past participle of the verb hallow, a term that descends from the Middle English word halowen. That word can be traced back to the Old English adjective hālig, meaning "holy." During the Middle Ages, All Hallows' Day was the name for what Christians now call All Saints' Day (hallow was once used also as a noun referring to a saint), and the evening that preceded All Hallows' Day was All Hallows' Eve or All Hallow Even—or, as we know it today, Halloween. (Although pumpkins are often hollowed out on Halloween, hollow has a different Old English root.)

Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 31, is the Eve of All Saints, also known as All Hallows' Eve or Hallowe' en, and commonly known as Halloween. In England, saints or holy people are called “hallowed,” meaning “All Hallows' Day.”Halloween or All Hallows' Eve is not a liturgical feast on the Catholic calendar. However, the celebration has deep Catholic meaning. The three consecutive days — Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day — illustrate the Communion of Saints. In other words, Halloween is the preparation and combination of the two upcoming feasts. We, the Church Militant (those on earth striving to get to heaven), pray for the Church Suffering (those souls in Purgatory), especially on All Souls Day and November. We rejoice and honor the Church Triumphant (the saints, canonized and uncanonized) in heaven. We also ask the Saints' intercession for us. The demonic, witchcraft, and macabre practices have no place in a Catholic celebration. Do you need to dress in any costume? Tied to the theme of the saints, as shown below. Let's imitate them and what they did to reach heaven by preparing our souls for death. [To learn more, please check these interesting links at our website]. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! A little history of this awesome holiday! All Hallows' Eve, now widely known as Halloween, has roots tracing back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Celebrated on October 31, Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the darker half of the year. During Samhain, Celts believed that the boundary between the living and the spirit world blurred, allowing spirits to roam the earth. People lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off any malevolent spirits. When Christianity spread through Celtic lands, the Church sought to replace pagan customs with Christian ones. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III moved All Saints' Day to November 1 to honor saints and martyrs, making October 31 the eve of All Hallows, or All Hallows' Eve. Gradually, All Hallows' Eve incorporated both Christian and folk traditions, creating a mix of supernatural beliefs and festivities. In the 19th century, Halloween found its way to North America through Irish and Scottish immigrants, who brought customs like dressing in costumes and carving turnips or pumpkins. Over time, Halloween transformed into a community-centered holiday focused on activities like trick-or-treating, parties, and spooky decorations, becoming a celebration of both playful and eerie themes.

They discuss how this celebration, held on October 31st, marked the end of the harvest season and was believed to be a time when the veil between the living and the dead was thinnest. Joe highlights how the Celts lit bonfires and donned costumes to protect themselves from wandering spirits. Jenifer adds that as Christianity spread, the festival evolved into All Hallows' Eve, setting the stage for modern Halloween. They explore the significant impact of Irish immigrants in the 19th century, who brought the holiday to America and helped shape its contemporary form. Trick-or-treating emerges as a key topic, with Joe explaining how this custom evolved from ancient practices into a community-centered activity by the 1920s. Jenifer notes that Halloween became increasingly popular, transforming from a night of superstition into a festive celebration characterized by costumes, parties, and candy. Together, they emphasize how Halloween reflects a blend of ancient traditions and modern influences, ultimately becoming a beloved holiday that captivates people of all ages across the globe. And this one has a very special anniversary episode, actually TWO of them. First up: we return to one of our favorite segments as we decide, once-and-for-all, what the is the BEST! Could it be The Exorcist, or possibly Poltergeist? Could A Nightmare on Elm Street out-slash The Blair Witch Project? Is Paranormal Activity more ghastly (and ghostly) than The Ring? Do exploding stomachs out-scare the horrific haunting that takes place in The Conjuring? Find out the winner with our Scariest Movie Battle Royale! Then, it is time to prep for All Hallows' Eve as we take to our own respective graveyards and dig up obscure Halloween movies. Trick r Treat has taken off in recent years, and there are many little unspoken gems like this one to get us all hyped up for the best movie season of the year for horror fans! Take a listen, and rest assured to walk away with at least a few new Halloween gems to watch this season of the witch. Next, it is the 25th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project this year. If you find a list of the greatest horror films, you'll find this now classic on that list. $250 million made worldwide, popularizing an entire genre and inspiring countless filmmakers across the globe, and even earned a Guinness world record for top budget to box office ratio – Blair Witch has earned the title of classic. And for the film's 25th anniversary, we wanted to sit down and discuss the film and its legacy with one of the filmmakers directly responsible for it, Eduardo Sánchez. Finally, it is the 10th anniversary of our special podcast episode on Women In Horror. Justin Macumber and Aaron Peterson are joined by guests (at the time) Amanda and Eliyanna to discuss how women in films, specifically horror films, have evolved throughout the years. From the early days of the black and white classics, such as Psycho, to the ‘Final Girl' and revenge fantasy films of the 70's, all the way to modern times with Scream, Buffy, and others: The entire history of women in horror films is open for debate. This is a detailed, lively, and entertaining discussion you do NOT want to miss! Halloween is a widely celebrated holiday that involves costumes, candy, and a variety of spooky activities. However, for many Christians, the origins and themes of Halloween raise important questions. Should believers participate in a holiday with roots in paganism and associations with the occult? Its origins lie in the blending of ancient pagan traditions with early Christian practices, resulting in a complex history that reflects the intersection of cultures, beliefs, and religious observances.1. Ancient Celtic Festival of SamhainThe earliest origins of Halloween can be traced to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "sow-in"), which was celebrated by the Celts over 2,000 years ago, primarily in what is now Ireland, the UK, and northern France. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, which was often associated with death. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the physical world and the spirit world became thin, allowing ghosts and spirits to cross over.During Samhain, people would light bonfires and wear costumes made from animal skins to ward off wandering spirits. Offerings of food and drink were also made to appease the spirits, ensuring protection from harm during the harsh winter months.2. The Roman InfluenceAs the Roman Empire expanded and conquered Celtic lands by the first century AD, the Romans brought their own festivals and beliefs, which blended with the local traditions. One such Roman festival was Feralia, a day in late October when Romans commemorated the dead. Another was Pomona, a celebration of the goddess of fruits and trees. The association of Pomona with apples likely contributed to later Halloween traditions such as bobbing for apples.3. Christianization of Samhain: All Saints' DayWith the spread of Christianity across Europe, many pagan festivals were Christianized to align with church doctrine. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III moved All Saints' Day—a day to honor all Christian saints and martyrs—to November 1. This was likely an attempt to replace or overshadow Samhain, which fell on the previous day. The evening before All Saints' Day became known as All Hallows' Eve, meaning “the evening before All Saints.” Over time, the name evolved into "Halloween."All Saints' Day (also called All Hallows' Day) was followed by All Souls' Day on November 2, a day to pray for the souls of the deceased who had not yet entered heaven. Together, these days formed a trilogy of holy observances dedicated to the dead, which...

Jed Doherty sits down with Summer Schneider, the head of school at Legacy College Prep, a charter school in the South Bronx that's making a big difference in the lives of its students. Summer shares the inspiring mission of Legacy College Prep - to ensure all students have access to opportunities after high school, whether that's college or other paths like trade schools or the military. She explains the unique autonomy and flexibility that charter schools have, which allows them to tailor their curriculum and approach to best serve their students. One of the biggest challenges facing Legacy College Prep is the high number of students who are performing two or more grade levels behind when they enroll. But Summer and her team are laser-focused on building reading habits and providing extra support to help these students catch up and thrive. Beyond academics, Summer also discusses the importance of rebuilding the partnership between schools and families, especially after the pandemic disrupted in-person interactions. She shares how Legacy College Prep is working to bring parents back into the school community. Jed and Summer also touch on the nationwide teacher shortage and Legacy College Prep's efforts to ensure they're fully staffed and able to provide the best possible education. But the real heart of this episode lies in Legacy College Prep's commitment to college preparation and making higher education accessible and affordable for their students. Summer explains the school's partnerships with universities and their focus on guiding families through the financial aid process.  The episode takes an exciting turn when Jed welcomes back Antony Kolenc and Leslea Wahl, from the Catholic Teen Authors group. They discuss their latest anthology, "Shadows, Visible and Invisible," which explores the Catholic traditions surrounding All Hallows' Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. Tony and Leslea share the collaborative process of creating these anthologies and the importance of preserving and sharing these rich cultural and faith-based stories with young readers. They encourage listeners to check out the Catholic Teen Books website to discover more inspiring, wholesome books for teens, and to support local independent bookstores by requesting the anthology. The Pod and the Pendulum

This week we kick off our coverage of the TERRIFIER franchise with the 2016, over the top infamous slasher film. While Art the Clown got his start in a pair of short films that became the anthology All Hallows' Eve, its really this one where he started down his path to iconic status. Mike and Ariel are joined by author Josh Millican (Teleportasm) to do what we do best: dive into the back story of how this came to be, from its humble beginnings as the short The Ninth Circle, to the feature films debut at Telluride Horror, to the litany of people that told writer/director Damien Leone that the film was too bloody, too gory, too offensive, and just too damn much. Whatever your opinion on the first film (and its one where your hosts' opinions vary to a degree) Terrifier is a story about an artist betting on himself, and that' something we'll always respect.
