Christine Rich has learned the Saints are working for her in a very real way.  A number of years ago, Christine didn't understand why she felt drawn to choose Saint Valentine as her Saint of the Year. Months later, God caught her attention when she realized that the morning she signed papers to leave the large, Catholic company she co-founded was Valentine's Day. After signing the papers, Christine went to pray at a local convent where Venerable Patrick Peyton had spent his final years. Christine even sat and prayed in his chair. Years later, Christine's daughter and son-in-law would name their first child Peyton. Peyton was born on Valentine's Day.  Listen to this Easter podcast and learn how the Saints are working for you, too! Christine Rich is a contributor to Clouds of Witnesses: 25 Stories of Saintly Inspiration and Intercession.

St. Valentine’s Day has turned into a Hallmark explosion of chocolates, flowers, and cringey teddy bears. But the man behind it was a total legend. Forget Cupid: St. Valentine was a priest who literally risked everything to defend sacramental marriage. Who Was St. Valentine? St. Valentine was a hardcore Catholic rebel. In the 3rd century, Emperor Claudius II was out here banning marriage because he thought single soldiers made better warriors. St. Valentine wasn’t having it. He kept marrying couples in secret because he knew that marriage is sacred and gives grace for the toughest battles, both on the battlefield and in life. He got caught, and for the "crime" of performing weddings, he was sentenced to a brutal three-part execution: beating, stoning, and finally, decapitation. Before his epic martyrdom, he performed a miracle: he healed a blind girl. (Legend has it, she was the daughter of the very judge who sentenced him.) He also wrote letters to her, signing them “Your Valentine.” Yup, that’s where our Valentine’s Day tradition comes from: not from overpriced roses, but from a saint who gave his life for love. Suffering: What’s the Point? St. Valentine’s story is about sacrificial love. The kind of love that’s willing to suffer. Suffering isn’t meaningless. It’s a mystery, but it’s also how we grow. Pope St. John Paul II wrote about how suffering is part of our human nature: it forces us to go beyond ourselves and find our transcendence in God. We all have choices when it comes to suffering:

pWotD Episode 2845: Valentine's Day Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 505,146 views on Friday, 14 February 2025 our article of the day is Valentine's Day.Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14. It originated as a Christian feast day honoring a martyr named Valentine, and through later folk traditions it has also become a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world. There are a number of martyrdom stories associated with various Saint Valentines connected to February 14, including an account of the imprisonment of Saint Valentine of Rome for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century. According to an early tradition, Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer. Numerous later additions to the legend have better related it to the theme of love: tradition maintains that Saint Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry by the Roman emperor; an 18th-century embellishment to the legend claims he wrote the jailer's daughter a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell before his execution. The 8th-century Gelasian Sacramentary recorded the celebration of the Feast of Saint Valentine on February 14. The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries, when notions of courtly love flourished, apparently by association with the "lovebirds" of early spring. In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion for couples to express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. In the 19th century, handmade cards gave way to mass-produced greetings. In Italy, Saint Valentine's keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver's heart", as well as to children to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine's Malady). It is a day of commemoration in the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church. Many parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrate Saint Valentine's Day on July 6 in honor of Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and on July 30 in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna (modern Terni). This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:06 UTC on Saturday, 15 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Valentine's Day on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

According to The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, the traditional association of St. Valentine's Day with courtship is likely connected with certain customs of the pagan festival Lupercalia. If so, this would be another example of Christians usurping a pagan holiday and Christianizing it for the glory of Christ.Hank also answers the following questions:Can you comment on Reza Aslan's book, Zealot, and his claim that there was no census at the time of Jesus' birth? Please note that the 1st part is in English, and the 2nd part is in Malayalam starting at 14:05 mark.Saint Valentine is the patron saint of love.  In the Roman Catholic church there are three saints with the name  Valentine.  All the three saints were stoned and beheaded for their Christian faith during the time of different Roman emperors.  St. Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, is a third-century Roman saint whose memory is celebrated on February 14.  Valentine day has its roots in paganism.  Lupercalia was a pagan fertility festival celebrated in February, and it had ties to a Roman god.  In an effort to clean up the pagan holiday,  in 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius designated February 14th as Valentine's official feast day.  The new holiday quickly spread to all countries that practiced Christianity. Historically it has commemorated romantic love, but recently it has been expanded to include all types of love.  During the time of Emperor Claudius II, marriage was prohibited for soldiers.  As a priest, Valentine conducted the marriages of couples who were in love. For this reason Valentine was sent to jail. Valentine used this time in jail to reach out to people with the love given by Jesus.  The jailer, Asterius, became friendly with Valentine.  He was impressed with Valentine's wisdom that he asked Valentine to help his daughter, Julia, with her lessons when she visited the jail.  Julia was blind, and the jailer tested his faith by asking him to restore her blind daughter's  eye sight.  Placing his hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored Julia's vision.  The jailer accepted Christianity along with 44 members of his family.  The now faithful jailer then freed all of his Christian inmates.  Emperor Claudius sentenced Valentine to death for not giving up his faith.  Before he was killed, Valentine wrote a last note to encourage Julia to stay close to Jesus and to thank her for being his friend.  He signed the note, “From your Valentine.”  Valentine was beaten, stoned and beheaded on February 14, 270.  St. Valentine sacrificed his life for his faith in Jesus, not for his love for us. There is someone who has done much more for each and every one of us than what St. Valentine did. That is Jesus Christ who is the Son of God.           My name... Cicilysunny@gmail.com

In honor of Valentine's Day, let's explore a profound question from the Christian catechism: What does God's law require? The answer lies in two simple yet powerful commandments, but first, let me share a timely story about the real Saint Valentine. The True Story of Saint ValentineIn the third century, during the reign of Emperor Claudius, a priest named Valentine took a bold stand for love. While Claudius was sending young men to die in meaningless wars, Valentine secretly married Christian couples, knowing that married men were exempt from military service. This act of defiance saved countless lives and allowed young families to flourish. Valentine's commitment to love ultimately cost him his life – he was executed in his 40s for his actions and attempts to evangelize Claudius himself. This story perfectly illustrates the two fundamental commandments that encompass all of God's law.The Two Great CommandmentsAs Jesus teaches in Matthew 22:37-40, all of God's law – every command and prophetic word – can be distilled into two essential principles:* Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind* Love your neighbor as yourselfWhat Does It Mean to Love God?Loving God means:* Enjoying His presence* Obeying His commands* Putting Him first in every area of life* Starting each day by asking: "Is this action motivated by love for God, or love for something else?"What Does It Mean to Love Your Neighbor? The command to "love your neighbor as yourself" isn't about self-love as a prerequisite – it's about extending the same care and consideration to others that we naturally give ourselves. Just as we instinctively seek our own wellbeing, we're called to actively pursue the happiness and growth of others, even when it requires difficult choices. The Heart of the MatterHere's the challenging truth: we can't fulfill these commands on our own. Our natural state is one of selfishness – just watch any baby and you'll see this truth in action. That's why the story of God's law doesn't end with commands, but with Christ. The same God who gave the law on Mount Sinai later sent His Son to a different mountain – Calvary – not just to give us the law, but to fulfill it perfectly on our behalf. Through Christ's sacrifice, we receive both forgiveness for our failures and a new heart capable of truly loving God and others.Practical ApplicationThis transformation shows up in everyday moments:* In how we start our day, choosing to put God first* In how we handle difficult conversations* In how we make decisions that might cause temporary discomfort but lead to long-term growth* In how we extend grace to others, just as we've received graceClosing ThoughtsThe requirements of God's law – loving Him and loving others – aren't just rules to follow. They're an invitation to experience life as it was meant to be lived. Through Christ, we receive the power to move beyond our natural selfishness and into a life marked by genuine love for God and neighbor. As we celebrate Valentine's Day, let's remember the priest who gave his life demonstrating these twin loves, and more importantly, the God who makes such love possible through Christ. This post is adapted from Episode 7 of our weekly catechism series, where we explore the core doctrines of the Christian faith. Americans are celebrating Valentine's Day. So, let's remember – the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Here's President Bill Clinton, speaking on February 15th, 1994 – the day after Valentine's Day, to the law enforcement community in London Ohio … In the last three decades, violent crimes have increased by 300 percent. Over the last three years, almost a third of Americans have either had themselves or someone in their families victimized by crime. Yesterday was the 65th anniversary of the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre in Chicago, which captured the entire nation's attention. The country was riveted by the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. Some of you may be old enough to remember it as children; I have seen movies about it. It absolutely galvanized the nation. In 1929, seven people were killed -- that was a massacre in 1929. In most cities today, it's a normal weekend.   Which other politicians have connected the St. Patrick's Day Massacre to policy and legislation? What do they get right – and what do they get wrong – about Al Capone's involvement? And what did former Attorney General Merrick Garland get as a farewell gift that is closely associated with the Massacre? Find out in this week's episode of C-SPAN's podcast “The Weekly" … as we mark  a romantic, sweet holiday – when Americans unify by celebrating love and friendship – by remembering a horrific bloody massacre . Hello Young Lovers!Welcome to a special Saint Valentine's Day TWOFER from The Splendid Bohemians:Today we're featuring two enchanting, encyclopedic British song stylists: Anne Briggs and Elvis Costello. First up: the majestic Ms. Briggs.SHE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR by Anne Briggs (Topic, 1963)Barefoot and bedraggled, Anne Briggs became the muse of the British Traditional Folk Boom in the early nineteen sixties. Her short performance career of mystical magic was retired at age 27, leaving behind a limited, but monumental discography. I first heard She Moved Through the Fair on Irish Heartbeat, made by Van Morrison and the Chieftains, and it's ethereal message left me paralyzed with romantic longing. But, that was just the prelude to my discovery of the plangent tones from this Goddess of acapella Celtic song. OPPORTUNITY by Elvis Costello and the Attractions (Columbia, 1980)This cut from my favorite Elvis Costello album, GET HAPPY!!! Is R&B funky with a Stax inspired beat and tasty organ punctuations by Steve Nieve. The music is absolutely giddy, and although the acrid lyrics - (so typical of the former Declan Patrick MacManus during this early period) - may be pessimistic and sneering, the overall effect is energizing. In fact, the recurring refrain: “this is your big opportunity….”, with the caveat: “don't turn around” indicates the intense, forward-looking dedication with which this artistic social climber fueled his rocket-like ascent to the firmament of the musical masters. Although Elvis succeeded handily, his early anti-authoritarian stance reminds me of so many other also-rans that, in preparation for their inevitable fall to irrelevance and obscurity, padded the ground below with a protective “fuck you” attitude. But, you knew all along that underneath the bravado that they really craved the gatekeepers recognition. The jaunty music belies the message of the sour lyrics, implying an alternate, more inspiring interpretation: Be alert! Recognize your opportunities and grab them while you can.

The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre was a brutal event that took place on February 14, 1929, in Chicago. Seven members of George “Bugs” Moran's North Side Gang were lined up against a wall and shot by four men, two of whom were disguised as police officers. This massacre was part of the violent rivalry between Moran's gang and Al Capone's Chicago Outfit during the Prohibition era. The massacre occurred at a garage located at 2122 North Clark Street. The victims included Moran's second-in-command, Albert Kachellek, and several other key members and associates of the gang. Despite the brutality of the attack, the perpetrators were never conclusively identified. This event shocked the nation and remains one of the most infamous incidents in the history of organized crime in the United States. #history #Beverly #mafia #beverlyhils #truecrime #tedbundy #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimememes #killers #killer #murder #mindhunter #murderer #kansas #icp #ouijamacc #juggalettes #juggalo #bondage #twiztid #thegathering #murdermuseum #eldorado #odditiesandcuriosities #caveman #oddities #rare #parkcity #death #charlesmanson #jeffreydahmer #edgein #crime #horror #darkart #richardramirez #halloween #criminal #horrorart #creepy #btkart #truecrimeart #truecrimepodcast #cannibal #albertfish #r #thriller #netflix #truecrimejunkie #horrormovies #history #selfie #truecrimefan #homicide #mystery #truecrimeobsessed #scary #serialkillerart #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #truecrimepodcast #crime #murder #podcast #truecrimeaddict #serialkiller #serialkillers #truecrimejunkie #horror #unsolved #murderino #podcastersofinstagram #truecrimeobsessed #mystery #ssdgm #truecrimefan #killer #truecrimememes #unsolvedmysteries #creepy #paranormal #podcasts #history #tedbundy #criminal #scary #podcasting #coldcase #murdermystery #bookstagram #death #buzzfeedunsolved #crimescene #truecrimepodcasts #missingperson #missing #halloween #crimejunkie #news #myfavoritemurder #spooky #supernatural #truecrimestories #homicide #ryanbergara #shanemadej #murderer #podcaster #truecrimebooks #memes #spotify #podernfamily #boogara #shaniac #jeffreydahmer #police #s #justice #history #ww #travel #art #photography #architecture #love #culture #nature #travelphotography #photooftheday #s #historia #instagood #historical #worldwar #heritage #india #instagram #museum #italy #war #vintage #memes #picoftheday #ig #europe #photo #explore #ancient#germany #historymemes #usa #beautiful #travelgram #follow #historic #france #music #military #italia #castle #historylovers #a #medieval #life #education #like #facts #landscape #storia #world #old #city #historyfacts #archaeology #upsc #america #wwii #Podcasthost #Aftermath #aftermathpodcast #podcast #binge #bingepodcast #podcasttips newpodcastalert #Hudson #aftermath #history #storiesyouforgotabout #attack #terrorattack #nostalgia #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #truecrimepodcast #crime #murder #podcast #truecrimeaddict #serialkiller #serialkillers #truecrimejunkie #horror #unsolved #murderino #podcastersofinstagram #truecrimeobsessed #mystery #ssdgm #truecrimefan #killer #truecrimememes #unsolvedmysteries #creepy #paranormal #podcasts #history #tedbundy #criminal #scary #podcasting #coldcase #murdermystery #bookstagram #death #buzzfeedunsolved #crimescene #truecrimepodcasts #missingperson #missing #halloween #crimejunkie #news #myfavoritemurder #spooky #supernatural #truecrimestories #homicide #ryanbergara #shanemadej #murderer #podcaster #truecrimebooks #memes #spotify #podernfam #history #Beverly #mafia #beverlyhils #truecrime #tedbundy #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimememes #killers #killer #murder #mindhunter #murderer #murdermuseum #eldorado #odditiesandcuriosities #caveman #oddities #rare #par #mystery #assassinations #trump #Dahlia #AlCapone #Capone #saintvalentinesday #saintvalentinesdaymassacre

On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (02/14/24), Hank discusses the origins of Valentine's Day, looking at the Orthodox Church's veneration of Saint Valentine, the Presbyter from Rome, for his martyrdom and as for all its saints, honors St. Valentine as a model of the life in Christ. According to The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, the traditional association of St. Valentine's Day with courtship is likely connected with certain customs of the pagan festival Lupercalia. If so, this would be another example of Christians usurping a pagan holiday and Christianizing it for the glory of Christ.Hank also answers the following questions:What are your thoughts on street preachers who publicly denounce people?
