My live reaction to the Golden Boot Winners and a quick discussion about where the Golden Boot sits as far as awards in Rugby League. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode, I discuss the career of Pat Buttram. Many of you may remember Pat as "Mr. Haney" on the long-running CBS comedy Green Arces. In 1982 Pat founded the Golden Boot Award to honor actors, directors, stunt people, and other industry professionals. Doug Hess is the host
Retired footballer Nathan Ellington, dubbed The Duke, was twice named the top goal scorer in the Football League, and was also a recipient of the league's coveted Golden Boot Award. However, despite a successful playing career, after retiring, Nathan found himself bankrupt and searching for options to support his family. Here, he talks about the impact of losing out on football contracts despite his achievements, recovering from injuries, and how his faith gave him the perspective to push through his toughest times.

As part of our recent “live from Parra Leagues” edition of The Tip Sheet, we were privileged to interview Eels legend, Brett Kenny. That word “legend” is often overused when reflecting on the careers of past players, but in Bert's case, it's probably not applied enough. Brett Kenny was a winner. The Eels won four premierships when he wore the Blue and Gold, and Wigan took out one of the most celebrated Challenge Cup Finals when Kenny opposed Sterlo in the 1985 decider. On the field, Bert stood tall against players adjudged to be Immortals. He took the five-eighth spot from Wally Lewis on the 1982 Kangaroo tour, then replaced Mal Meninga at centre on the 1986 tour. When Kenny opposed Wally Lewis at five-eighth in Origin, NSW won 8 of the 12 clashes. As far as individual accolades are concerned, Brett won two man of the match (Clive Churchill Medal) awards, The Lance Todd Trophy for best on field in a Challenge Cup Final, and the Golden Boot Award in 1985. In our interview with Brett, we take a dive into some of the stories behind the stories. He recounts his time working as a cellar man at Parra Leagues, and looks back on his practical joke in the lead up to the 1981 grand final. As our chat continues, he speaks about how he and Steve Ella would alternate positions, what it was like to be coached by Jack Gibson, and why no Eels players from that great era ever feature in discussions about the next Immortal. Brett also touches on the hypothetical - what type of player would he be in the modern era. We thoroughly enjoyed sharing the microphone with the man that we believe should be an Immortal, and it was even more special to record it before a full house in Pablos at Parra Leagues. Accordingly, we present it to you as a stand-alone podcast episode. Brett Kenny - Parramatta's Immortal.

Gemma O’Doherty is one of them. The multi-awarded Irish journalist and filmmaker, and foundress of Anti-Corruption Ireland, has made a career going after said corruption in the Garda (national police force), the Government, and the intertwining among these institutions and the Church, or in her words, “the cosy cartel that exists between the press, power, and the police in this country.” To this day, she has never run out of material. Given the Golden Boot Award from The Irish Independent, Ireland’s largest daily newspaper (owned by Clinton crony billionaire Denis O'Brien), Gemma took to YouTube, with the same unPC tenacity that characterized her style. And then parent company Google took both her channels down for violations of—wait for it—corporate “hate speech” rules. This can happen when you a) are a practicing Catholic, b) won’t be boxed into a single “conservative” box; and c) have a thing or two to say about uncontrolled immigration.
One of Hollywood's staple of child actors during the 30s and 40s, Mickey Kuhn appeared alongside many top Hollywood stars including John Wayne, Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart and many more. Born in 1932, Mickey began to add to the family income at age 2 when, by chance, he was cast by Fox Studios for the movie “Change of Heart” (1934) starring the preeminent movie couple at the time, Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell. In 1939, Mickey appeared as Crown Prince Augustin in “Juarez” starring Bette Davis and, most notably, as Olivia de Havilland and Leslie Howard’s son Beau in “Gone with the Wind.” “One-Take Mickey” proved quite dependable and was actively involved in several prestigious pictures during the 1940s and 50s including “One Foot in Heaven” (1941), “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (1945), “Red River” (1948), “Broken Arrow” (1950) and “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951). After a four-year term of duty, he returned to films and TV in 1955 and attended L.A. Valley College and Cal State Northridge on his G.I. Bill and majored in Theater Arts. As a young man, Mickey chose to leave the motion picture industry. He was hired by American Airlines in 1967 and subsequently served as a supervisor to flight attendants. He later became an administrative manager at a Boston airport and retired from the airlines in 1995. He received the Golden Boot Award for his work in westerns in 2005. Sydney Roosters legend Anthony Minichiello saw the end of his playing career coming, and planned accordingly. Many of his footy mates didn't, with tragic results. Anthony says the come down from the highs of a sports star life can be hard. Many athletes struggle to find a new purpose, and structure, for their new life. It was different for 'Mini' who was raised by hard working Italian parents who made him get a trade in the early years of his NRL career. He maintained a life of balance, which extended beyond his world of sport. Anthony went on to captain the Roosters and holds the record for most games and most tries at the club. He's decorated as they come - a NSW State of Origin representative, Australia and Italy representative, and winner of the Golden Boot Award for International Player of the Year in 2005. Anthony's career coincided with a big shift in the commercialisation of sport. He talks about the evolution from his first contract worth $10,000 and drinking plenty of beer after every match, to the professional game it is today. Anthony also shares lessons learned from his humble upbringing, how he built a broad network and interests outside of rugby league and the challenge of growing the game nationally. Maureen O'Hara, one of the great stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood, passed away on October 24, 2015. Movie Addict Headquarters paid tribute to her with this special episode that aired live in March of 2014. Film critics Diana Saenger and James Colt Harrison dropped by to salute the famous Irish actress who appeared in such classic movies as The Quiet Man, Mracle on 34th Street, How Green Was My Valley, Spanish Main and McClintock. Because of her beautiful red hair, she was called the Queen of Technicolor, and her work in so many Westerns earned her a Golden Boot Award in 1991. Brought to Hollywood from Ireland by Charles Laughton in the late 1930s, Maureen achieved immediate acclaim for her fiery performances in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Jamaica Inn. She remained a popular box-office draw throughout her long acting career and played opposite a host of A-list actors including John Wayne, Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart. It was a treat to hear classic movie experts Diana Saenger and James Colt Harrison discuss Maureen O'Hara's remarkable film career. Diana is the founder of Classic Movie Guide, and James is a film historian who writes movie commentary for a variety of outlets, including Review Express and Classic Movie Guide. Maureen O'Hara was a multi-talented actress and grand lady. She will be missed -- but her wonderful performances live on through the magic of film.
