In unheard 2013 NRL Premiership reflections, the Sydney Roosters' legendary coach steps through the importance of being humble in an already established environment, and what it took to shift philosophies and make an impact in a fiercely competitive environment. Luke Darcy chats with Trent about his time in France, reflections on joining the NRL as a rookie coach, the philosophy of being a servant to the players, and how Cooper Cronk's incredible Grand-Final bravery inspired him and the staff. Incredibly, in his first season in the NRL, Trent Robinson guided the East-Sydney side to a premiership. The squad had a core of superstars like Sonny Bill Williams, Anthony Minichiello, and James Maloney, but it was a team philosophy that was recognised as being so pivotal. Trent and the Roosters won premierships in 2018 and 2019, the first club to win back-to-back flags since 1992. Start your leadership journey today. Sydney Roosters legend Anthony Minichiello saw the end of his playing career coming, and planned accordingly. Many of his footy mates didn't, with tragic results. Anthony says the come down from the highs of a sports star life can be hard. Many athletes struggle to find a new purpose, and structure, for their new life. It was different for 'Mini' who was raised by hard working Italian parents who made him get a trade in the early years of his NRL career. He maintained a life of balance, which extended beyond his world of sport. Anthony went on to captain the Roosters and holds the record for most games and most tries at the club. He's decorated as they come - a NSW State of Origin representative, Australia and Italy representative, and winner of the Golden Boot Award for International Player of the Year in 2005. Anthony's career coincided with a big shift in the commercialisation of sport. He talks about the evolution from his first contract worth $10,000 and drinking plenty of beer after every match, to the professional game it is today. Anthony also shares lessons learned from his humble upbringing, how he built a broad network and interests outside of rugby league and the challenge of growing the game nationally. Mini was in Adelaide to promote the Roosters' clash with the Storm at Adelaide Oval on June 24, and was able to squeeze in our interview between promotional duties.
