The Ledge has always been known to enjoy music from all over the world. This month’s new release episode, however, goes ever further than usual. A special treat for you on the show today as we sit down with one of the most familiar faces and voices in Australian Olympic broadcasting Basil Zempilas to learn about his extraordinary media career and his memories and experiences the Olympics have brought him! We find out from Basil some of his favourite moments he has called at the Olympics and just what it was like to have followed in the footsteps in fellow broadcast icons Bruce McAvaney, Sandy Roberts & Dennis Cometti. We also go over that historic call of his from Salt Lake City in 2002 in which he was the voice behind Steven Bradbury's iconic gold and what that means to him more than 20 years later. Added to this we find out about some of his other favourite calls, just why he was so happy to be able to use the word "gobbledygook" during the Tokyo Olympics and whether or not he might've found a fitting replacement for him on this very show for when the day comes for him to retire. Sydney Roosters legend Anthony Minichiello saw the end of his playing career coming, and planned accordingly. Many of his footy mates didn't, with tragic results. Anthony says the come down from the highs of a sports star life can be hard. Many athletes struggle to find a new purpose, and structure, for their new life. It was different for 'Mini' who was raised by hard working Italian parents who made him get a trade in the early years of his NRL career. He maintained a life of balance, which extended beyond his world of sport. Anthony went on to captain the Roosters and holds the record for most games and most tries at the club. He's decorated as they come - a NSW State of Origin representative, Australia and Italy representative, and winner of the Golden Boot Award for International Player of the Year in 2005. Anthony's career coincided with a big shift in the commercialisation of sport. He talks about the evolution from his first contract worth $10,000 and drinking plenty of beer after every match, to the professional game it is today. Anthony also shares lessons learned from his humble upbringing, how he built a broad network and interests outside of rugby league and the challenge of growing the game nationally. Over more than 40 years, the voice of legendary sports commentator Dennis Cometti has become instantly recognisable; the dulcet tones, humour and famous one-liners a trademark. An only child, Dennis grew up broadcasting his own make-believe games and watching local footy with his father, who passed away when Dennis was just 18 years old. He then forged a career as a radio DJ, and was given a chance to help out with some football coverage, which sent him on the sports broadcast path. In fact Dennis says he was given the chance to commentate Test cricket, but chose to stick with local footy, hoping to position himself for a role in the emerging national game. It turned out to be an inspired decision. Dennis talks about the preparation required for a weekend of commentary, his performance practices, and exactly how he finds a way to drop a classic one-liner at the perfect time.
