The filing period for the FDNY Firefighter Open Competitive exam #4044 opened on Monday, June 24, 2024. The last filing period was in 2017. The path to joining the Greatest Job on Earth is competitive and tedious – it requires both perseverance and patience. That is why the Leadership Under Fire Team and Paddy Brown Program hosted an information session to educate and encourage those military service members and veterans desiring to join the FDNY as well as those who are considering military service prior to joining the FDNY. The conversation featured the perspectives of several current FDNY members whose path to the FDNY was shaped by their military service. The conversation also provided insight into the FDNY's hiring process, employment requirements, the professional benefits of military service, and commentary on military veterans who have served our Nation and FDNY with distinction. Of note: The Notice of Examination for Exam #4044 was released after the conversation was recorded. Subsequently, those who are interested in joining the FDNY are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the NOE prior to filing for the exam.

This week's guest is my dear friend Rachel Anderson - but on YouTube you may know her as Rachel-Lee.I met Rach at a YouTube event and she has since become a close friend of mine. She has been making videos on YouTube for 10 years. 10 years! In the internet world that is a LONG time! Because of this though, Rach has experienced many different online niches and has pivoted her content many times based on what she is interested in. If you think about it, the lifestyle vlogger is the coolest job. One day you can just be like "hey, I like cleaning my apartment in a t-rex suit" and your core audience will be like...... "okie doke."Earlier this year I took a holiday after burning myself out from 4 years of making content without a break and Rach helped me a lot along my journey. This is where our conversation began. Enjoy!A special Thank-Q to Rachel for joining me today. In Episode 11, we sit down with Jerry Baxter: crew chief for Erik Jones and the No. 43 Chevrolet team in the NASCAR Cup Series. Originally from San Diego, CA, Jerry is one of many whose passion for racing brought them from the West Coast to the Carolinas. After a short driving career, Jerry realized quickly that his best bet was to shift focus and work to become the best crew chief he could be. Jerry spent a number of years atop in the box in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series working for team owners such as Michael Waltrip and Kyle Busch and collecting a total of 18 race wins. Before the start of the 2020 season, Jerry became the crew chief on the No. 43 at Richard Petty Motorsports and does an excellent job leading our race team on Sundays. We appreciate his time, insight and storytelling and we hope you enjoy episode 11 of the RPM Podcast!
With the 888poker WPTDeepstakes events beginning just around the corner on April 15th, Kara is talking to yet another of the most recognizable voices from the World Poker Tour. It feels like Vince Van Patten has already lived a couple of lifetimes' worth of experiences. He's been a professional tennis player, a Hollywood actor and screenwriter, and now a beloved poker personality. But this interview is a new one, even for him. Kara is using her special set of psychological questions to get personal with Vince, as we get a glimpse into what motivates one of the most interesting and multi-talented guests we've ever had on Heart of Poker. We take a trip through Vince's somewhat unconventional but happy childhood, through his crazy drive to succeed in the tennis world and how he's learned a more balanced life is the key to happiness in later years. Kara and Vince talk getting caught in earthquakes in California, chasing storms in New England and how the key to friendship is not sugarcoating the important things. Vince also explains why, despite everything he's done, he still considers commentating with WPT to be the greatest job ever. Vince is clearly in a great place in his life, he's happy to share and not afraid to get a little cosmic. Basically, a perfect Heart of Poker guest. Check out previous episodes starting with Vince's WPT colleague Tony Dunst, as well as Phil Galfond, Mori Eskandani, Jason Koon, Dominik Nitsche, Vanessa Selbst, Maria Ho, and more.

Today I speak with the multi-talented poet and teacher Taylor Mali. Taylor Mali is one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement. He was one of the original poets to appear on the HBO series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry and was the “Armani-clad villain” of Paul Devlin’s 1997 documentary film SlamNation. His poem “What Teachers Make” has been viewed over 4 million times on YouTube and was quoted by the New York Times’ Thomas Friedman in one of his commencement addresses. Mali is a vocal advocate of teachers and the nobility of teaching, having spent nine years in the classroom teaching everything from English and history to math and S.A.T. test preparation. He has performed and lectured for teachers all over the world; and in 2012 he reached his goal of creating one thousand new teachers through “poetry, persuasion, and perseverance.” Based on the poem that inspired a movement, his book of essays, What Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World, is his passionate defense of teachers drawing on his own experiences, both in the classroom and as a traveling poet. He is the author of four books of poetry, Late Father and Other Poems (Quercus Review Press, 2018) Bouquet of Red Flags (Write Bloody Books, 2014), The Last Time As We Are (Write Bloody Books, 2009), and What Learning Leaves (Hanover, 2002); and four CDs of spoken word.
Taylor Mali, a TED "Best of the Web" speaker, has done little more than write & perform poetry—and teach others to do the same—since 2000. His poems "are clear. They are almost always hysterically funny, often sentimental, appealing, accessible. And smart" (Bob Holman). He is a vocal advocate of teachers and the nobility of teaching, having taught in one capacity or another since 1990. He spent nine years in the classroom teaching everything from English and history to math and S.A.T. test preparation. He has performed and lectured for teachers all over the world, and his 12-year long Quest for One Thousand Teachers, completed in April of 2012, helped create 1,000 new teachers through "poetry, persuasion, and perseverance," an achievement he commemorated by donating 12 inches of his hair to the American Cancer Society. He has performed or taught poetry in over 50 foreign countries and in every state of the U.S. (except Wyoming!). Taylor Mali is the author most recently of "The Whetting Stone" (Rattle 2017), a "life-affirmingly dark" look at the death of his first wife. He is also the author of "Bouquet of Red Flags" (Write Bloody Books 2014), a poetic celebration of "a marriage I did not yet realize was over," "What Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World" (Putnam 2012) as well as two other books of poetry, “The Last Time As We Are” (Write Bloody Books 2009) and “What Learning Leaves” (Hanover 2002). He received a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in 2001 to develop "Teacher! Teacher!" a one-man show about poetry, teaching, and math which won the jury prize for best solo performance at the 2001 Comedy Arts Festival. Formerly president of Poetry Slam, Inc., the non-profit organization that oversees all poetry slams in North America, Taylor Mali makes his living entirely as a spoken-word and voiceover artist these days, traveling around the country performing and teaching workshops as well as doing occasional commercial voiceover work. He has narrated several books on tape, including "The Great Fire" for which he won the Golden Earphones Award for children's narration. ‘Well, that's the flying done.’ I thought, as the jet slowly rolled to a stop. And, as I moved the throttle to the closed position, I knew it would be the last time I ever flew a fighter jet. I opened the canopy and, as the engine wound down and took the generator offline, my screens turned black. I could see the crowd walking out from the Squadron carrying the fire extinguishers with which to spray me, just like I’d done to many of my pilots before and yet, I felt little emotion. I had a last look around; it was a familiar and comfortable environment but one I knew could have killed me at any moment. Like the family dog you think you know well, right up until it bites you. But, I hadn’t been bitten. I’d flown these machines for many years and by luck, judgement and the work of some exceptional engineers, I’d brought them all back home. Nope, it all looked good - I stood up on the ejection seat and stepped outside to meet those who had come out to celebrate the end to my twenty years in military fast jet aviation. I didn’t regret a thing. http://www.fastjetperformance.com/podcasts/why-i-quit-the-greatest-job-in-the-world-the-curse-of-the-bovril-snail See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
