Photos are the gateways to our stories. They are the gateway to learning more about our ancestors and where we come from – even if you have a broken family or past; photos can help you heal and understand your stories from a different perspective. Haleh Shoa is the Founder and CEO of Picturli, a photo organization, curation, archiving, and design studio that helps families, individuals, and businesses transform their photo mess into one sortable digital library. Haleh firmly believes that our family histories and personal memories are some of the most valuable treasures we can have and that preserving and sharing them is essential for future generations. Today's episode is going to inspire you to listen to the nudges and look at what makes you happy, because you really can start a business based on anything. Haleh was working as the Director of Operations for Jaguar/Land Rover and was flying around the globe. She loved it. But it made her wonder if she could do it for herself. She started working with a life coach, who asked her what she loved doing the most. They dug deep, and Haleh realized she loved photo books and creating gallery wall art. Haleh started her business in 2016 and was questioning herself – was she doing the right thing? Her passion for photo organizing stems from her family's history of being uprooted by the Iranian Revolution in 1979. While they were unable to bring most of their belongings to the U.S., they did manage to bring all of their photo albums and memorabilia. Now, the only memories that remain from Haleh's childhood are through her family photos and the stories shared with her through the collection she has preserved. “I would take my photos into work and start scanning them,” says Haleh. “Because of the revolution, I have family in four continents. … And it really would get my cousins calling going, ‘Where did you get these photos? We've never seen them.'” Haleh says anytime you start a business, you have to go with the energy of its growth and changes. Haleh's first client had a house full of 45,000 photos that needed to be organized and archived. While she knew she wanted to do photobooks, this client needed the organization and archival aspect first. She listened and led with service. “It's so incredible to learn someone's story and for them to be able to not now have access to it,” says Haleh. The first step is to gather all the items – photos, albums, scrapbooks, films and videos, and then to have a goal. That's where curation comes in. “We learn about their family birthdays, passings, weddings. And we do a family chart,” she says. Once everything is organized, her team digitizes, renames, and redates all the files. Haleh still works on the creative side, designing curated photo books. One of her recent projects involved creating a book that a client used to propose to his girlfriend. “We're not just the scanning agency. We make sure that we understand your story, and we apply that to your assets.” To contact Haleh Shoa at Picturli or to download the 7-step guide to archiving and downloading your photos, visit https://www.picturelifecurated.com Other GoG episodes you might want to check out: Does Your Story Matter? This week I spoke to Haleh from United4Mahsa, an organisation that has been helping to raise voices in Iran during the ongoing revolution for nearly a year now. We have spoken before, and with the anniversary of the death of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini taking place this week, I wanted an update on all that had taken place over the past 12 months.Following the uprising after the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022 at the hands of Iran's morality police many men, women and children have been protesting in and out of Iran. Some burned their hijabs and cut their hair to protest against Iran's brutal regime and the morality police who have been enforcing it.In this podcast, Haleh gives an update on some of the ongoing protests in Iran, and talks to me about the continued activism that many from the Iranian diaspora have continued to participate in.We discuss the risks of violent retribution for those who have family members still living in Iran when their relatives abroad speak out. Haleh also shared important figures on those who have been arrested and discussed the violent poisonings of girls, and the reports of the brutality of the morality police who have even shot protestors' eyes out.The work of the Iranian diaspora across the globe has continued to fight for freedom, and this week more protests will take place as the anniversary of Jina Mahsa Amini's arrest and murder comes to pass.Stay tuned to hear these topics and so much more, as we even speak about the former British soldier Daniel Khalife who escaped from prison this month, shortly to be returned, and his ties to the Iranian Government and the accusations of espionage and breaking the Officials Secrets Act.Thank you for listening.Links -United4Mahsa - WebsiteUnited4Mahsa - InstagramHaleh -Instagram
Haleh Liza Gafori is a translator, vocalist, poet, and educator born in New York City of Iranian descent. Her latest work, is a translation of Rumi poems entitled Gold. I first heard one of her translations of Rumi sitting around a campfire on a Sunday morning in Patagonia, Arizona. I was bit by the passion and this conversation does not disappoint. Haleh and I converse about being raised in a family that celebrates poetry, how a translator's work is never done alone, what clergy of today might learn from Rumi's transformation, translating as a spiritual practice, and much more. Hello and Welcome back to the Ebby Online podcast. This week I spoke to Haleh and Sahar from United4Mahsa an organisation that has been helping to raise voices in Iran during the ongoing revolution that kicked off after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September at the hands of Iran's morality police. Many women have been burning their hijabs and cutting their hair to protest against Iran's brutal regime and the morality police who have been enforcing it.In this podcast, Sahar shares her personal story about being captured by the morality police in Tehran, Iran's capital city.We also discuss violence against women and regime control via state-run media outlets and social media silencing/internet blackouts.Sahar and Haleh speak about the many women that have been raped beaten and killed at the hands of the morality police. And the imbalance of rights for women has reached a fever pitch and has sparked widespread protests across the country, as men women, and children have been doing what they can to speak out against the regime under Ebrahim Raisi.Sahar and Haleh informed me about how people back in their home country have been using loopholes on social media to share messages about what has been happening on the ground. Many women and girls, as well as men, have been risking their lives in order to protest against the strict regime. In recent weeks I noticed that protests have been taking place across the world, but that there had still not been as much news coverage by media outlets globally. Many women and girls, as well as men, have been risking their lives in order to protest against the strict regime. It's not just a women's rights issue it's also about human rights.Thank you for listening.Links -United4Mahsa - WebsiteUnited4Mahsa - InstagramSahar - InstagramHaleh -Instagram
Rumi was a 13th-century Persian poet whose wisdom continues to echo and inspire souls around the world. Every person who has read at least a single line written by Rumi knows that his verse can heal one's heart. We wouldn't have known about Rumi and these mystical powers if not for talented translators like Haleh Liza Gafori. Her recent beautiful translation of Rumi's poetry 'Gold' was published by The New York Review of Books in March 2022. In this episode she told Vashik Armenikus how Rumi can heal our hearts by teaching us the religion that could unite all of us - the religion of Love. You can find more about Haleh, her work and her book recommendation in the link below. Hope you will enjoy listening to this episode! Vashik Armenikus

“Haleh Liza Gafori’s ecstatic and piercing translation has lifted a veil, bringing Rumi closer into the quick of our present. Each poem is a divine invitation. Free your mind. Drown in love.” —V (formerly Eve Ensler) With black curls twirling across her shoulders, Haleh Liza Gafori — a poet, translator, vocalist, and educator — stands on a stage, performs a poem of Rumi that she translated into English, then bursts into song in Persian. As her voice echoes across the room, she evokes the divine ecstasy and vision this great mystic poet is known for — expressing in an intimate manner entirely her own. For well over a decade, Gafori has inspirited and taught the poetry of Persian poets across various universities, festivals, museums, and institutions. A bicultural woman of Persian descent raised in New York, Gafori’s ears are highly attuned to both American poetry and the Persian text. As a child, she listened to her parents recite Rumi’s Persian poetry. “It’s very common for Iranians to memorize poetry,” she explains, saying she would hear these words but not quite understand. But the energy the lines carried, and their effects on the listeners made an early, indelible imprint on her. As an adult, she began reading Rumi in English. “It was interesting that American translators kind of pointed me back to my roots," she says. For Gafori, Rumi’s words offer ancient wisdom pertinent to our current time: What do his poems tell us about ego death, compassion, greed, generosity, selflessness, soul, and the cultivation of ecstasy? What is his liberating take on death? Then she began singing in Persian, and eventually, translating these same poems. “As someone who can look at the Persian and look at the English,” she reflects, “one can see, oh, we don't have these lines here, we're missing these lines, or wow, this is a great, well done translation here, or oh my God, what in the world was happening here? It's a mixture. It's a mixed bag.” Her new book, Gold, is a fresh selection and translation of Rumi’s poems — its title a reference to Rumi and other Sufi poets being alchemists, transforming mental states and feeling states into “the deepest love, the deepest generosity, the most expansive consciousness that we can touch, the ecstatic.” Former Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets Marilyn Hacker describes Gold as “the work of someone who is at once an acute and enamored reader of the original Farsi text, a dedicated miner of context and backstory, and, best of all, a marvelous poet in English.” Gafori explains that the book is a collection sourced from the Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi, a sprawling text of over 40,000 verses. Each poem here had to be cut from this endless cloth, reshuffled, styled with modern enjambments, and, finally, translated. Perhaps it’s more accurate to think of Gold not as a translation of one medieval mystical poet by a modern poet, but as a collaboration between two equal poets that spans centuries. I saw myself sharp as a thorn. I fled to the softness of petals. I saw myself sour as vinegar. I mixed myself with sugar. An aching eye seeing through pain, a stewing pot of poison, I was both. Reaching for the antidote, I touched compassion. I touched mercy. After a BS in Biological Sciences from Stanford University, Gafori received an MFA in creative writing from City College of New York. Her thesis — comprised of original poems, as well as translations of Persian poets like Sohrap Sepehri and Omran Salahi — earned her an Academy of American Poets Prize and the Goodman Grant for Poetry. She has been featured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Fetzer Institute’s Gathering on Love and Forgiveness, Bowery Poetry Club, and Verses of Hope hosted by the Marginalian (formerly Brainpickings). For the poetry journal Rattapallax, Gafori served as a guest editor of the New Persian Poetry section. In addition to her gifts as a poet, Gafori is also a musician. For current and past musical projects, including Haale (former spelling of her name, “Haleh”) and The Mast, Gafori toured across the US and Europe, including stops at One Note at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival, and the Bonnaroo Festival. Her albums have received critical acclaim, and her songs have appeared in the NBC’s series “Life” and the CWTV’s series “The Originals.” In 2018, she translated, composed, and performed in a collaborative multi-media project, “Ask Hafez,” supported by the Queens Council on the Arts. Like the poems she translates, Gafori’s voice is timeless, and her offerings are perhaps best observed or listened to. We invite you to find a quiet space to sample one of them here. Please join us in conversation with this gifted poet and musician who infuses new vitality into ancient love and wisdom.

As a child, Haleh Liza Gafori was introduced to Rumi's Persian poetry, and as an adult, she began singing and translating these same poems. Annmarie and Haleh talk about the timelessness of this 13th century mystic, how Rumi's work offers “liberating and nourishing perspectives” still vital to us today, and how we can both lose and find ourselves in the depth of his words.
Siloed leadership is the practice of organizing and managing an organization in a way where different departments are separated and often work independently. In today's episode, Managing Partner and Co-Founder Haleh Fardi discusses how siloed leadership can be dangerous for business because it limits the collaboration between departments, leading to missed opportunities to innovate, grow, or solve problems. For example, a company might have one department focusing on marketing while another was focusing on sales. The two departments might not collaborate and instead focus on their own goals. This separation can make it difficult for the company to innovate or grow because there is no collaboration across departments. Haleh explores how siloed leadership often develops on accident, as part of annual planning, and how company leaders can take practical steps to avoid friction when one part of the business is out of sync with another.
